ANNUAL CAMPAIGN 2016

The Y. For a better us. WHY I GIVE? I give because I can be part of the impact the Y is making in the community. —Staff Member IMPACT STORY– THE HARPLE STORY

The YMCA has been a vital part of our family’s “routine” over the past years. One of our chil-

dren is autistic and having access to a pool all year round, as a sort of therapy, is the main

reason we initially joined the YMCA. If there is one thing that seems extremely common

among autistic children, it is the calming effect of being submersed in the water. It is a great

relief knowing that there is always that quick escape to the pool on a day where he has had

too much sensory overload.

We love the fact there are activities for all of our family to take part in also. From yoga, to

cardio workouts, to water fitness classes or just relaxing in the sauna, the entire family has

options to stay fit and healthy.

Despite our child being on the Autism spectrum, the staff at the YMCA has always made our

family feel so welcome, as if we were their extended family. From the front desk, to the life

guards, to the maintenance staff, you constantly get a friendly smile and hello from everyone

in the building. Thank you for those smiles, which bring a bright daily ray of sunshine to a

family with a special needs child.

Zoe For President

The 2016 election cycle is underway, marked by both hope and apprehension by the American public. Today, though, there’s optimism and excitement as a new candidate announces her campaign for the presidency—the right candidate for our country. It’s official:

Zoe is running for president… In 2064.

Zoe for President is a campaign organized by the Y to elect a one-year-old girl as our Commander in Chief in 2064. As the nation braces for what is already a contentious cam-paign, Zoe for President aims to be a breath of fresh air—a campaign that addresses actual issues faced by our youth and families alike, and the Tiffin Community YMCA’s part in fixing

them. The campaign highlights the potential in all kids to change the world if they’re nurtured properly and supported throughout childhood and their teen years. Through Y programs like the Weekend Food Program, childcare, academic enrichment, mentorship, and more, kids have the opportunities to succeed, grow, and maybe even be president.

Zoe represents the potential of every child which the Y attempts to foster every day. We’d love the chance to share and to discuss the Y’s programs and the Zoe campaign—including

Zoe’s campaign website, ZoeforPresident.net. We encourage you to donate to our Annual Campaign and help us to continue to nurture the potential in the youth we serve.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY For more info contact Deena Smith, Director of Social Responsibility at [email protected].

TOGETHERHOOD

Togetherhood invites Y members to activate their social responsibility by participating in the Y’s cause to strengthen community. Togetherhood provides Y members with fun, convenient and rewarding ways to give back and support their neighbors. Togetherhood is the YMCA’s Signature Program for Social Responsibility. This program invites Y members to lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit the community where they live. There will be opportunities to volunteer throughout the year: watch for events to be posted on Facebook, Twitter, and our Website.

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

A fun and exciting way to learn about government! The Ohio YMCA's Youth & Government Program enhances development of the American democratic process for young people through participatory training in the theory and practice of the Ohio state government.

Teens in the program learn about the legislative process, how to write and research bills, and how to participate in elections. Their work culminates in teens serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on the floor of the legislature. Some teens have actually made bills into laws! The YG program seeks to build, encourage and strengthen life assets and character traits that will help teens become involved and responsible adults. All YAG activities are designed with

the following goals in mind:

- Providing leadership training and preparation to meet the needs of a democratic society - Stimulating interest and awareness of US and state government’s function - Creating opportunities for civic engagement and awareness of prominent social issues - Developing self-confidence and self-expression while fostering tolerance and understanding of others’ point of view - Cultivating the application of moral and ethical valuing processes to public policy making

Registration: October 1-November 30 Information Night: November 7th at 6pm Grades: 9-12 Conference at the end of March 2017 $250 per student - Scholarships available. WEEKEND FOOD PROGRAM (BACKPACK FOOD PROGRAM) 1 in 5 US children struggle with hunger. Children from low-income families are eligible to receive

free or reduced-cost meals at school, but when the school day ends many of these children don’t know where their next meal will come from.

As we expand the weekend food programs to include more schools we are able to serve more students in the Seneca county area. From 50 students in 2013 to 425 students in 2015; and for the 2016-2017 school year we are hoping to reach over 700 students in the county. The goals of the weekend food program are make sure that students have the nutrition they need to focus better at school on Mondays, to have less missed days due to illness, and to have less behavior issues. This program is funded by grants from the Tiffin-Seneca United Way, the Wal-Mart

Foundation, The White family Foundation, The LPGA Marathon foundation, and many other community organization donations. We also depend on our generous donors through our annual

campaign. Thank you for the overwhelming support for this valuable program. If you know of a student that could benefit from this program please contact John Aragon at [email protected]
