PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Warm welcome to new council members with strong encouragement to speak up and participate fully. As issues arise, the council may send items to ministry teams for recommendation before making final decisions. OLD BUSINESS – Business from the May Congregational Meeting. Now that the comprehensive spending plan was adopted at the May meeting, a concrete plan of action needs to be finalized that includes hospitality plans; construction details are complicated and very inter-connected. A meeting with parking lot company is planned in the next week. Properties Team is aware that unexpected issues may surface which will affect the prioritized work. Stewardship for All Seasons. The SAS program is under way for a second year. Plans are for the SAS coach to meet with the entire council next month. Outreach

Committee is anticipating to be more involved with this program. NEW BUSINESS – Nominations for council liaison to ministry teams M/S/Approved 2019-20 ministry team assignments: President: Lori Cowman Education: Connie Toavs Property: Mark Chamberlain Vice President/Personnel: Joe Gartner Finance/Treasurer: Milton Ferris Hospitality: Tina Haugstad Stewardship: Deb Peterson Secretary: Alice Loddigs Outreach: Bill Hartman WAM: Alan Sommervold Parish Life: Marisa Lerum Youth: Kristan Kohls Trunk or Treat Request for funding was tabled to better determine source of money. Endowment Committee The Endowment committee will be meeting this week to vote on college scholarship applications; 4 applications have been received and three scholarships will be granted. Also being considered are proposals from ministry teams. Hospitality Committee Tina Haugstad reported on progress to choose a new logo and plans to further develop materials surrounding the need to update our communications/marketing/social media efforts. Sage Burning Discussion was tabled, since Karen Carlson and Tom Wiblishauser will be present at the June meeting. PASTOR JASON REPORT Note that we begin our summer worship schedule this Sunday. Worship is at 9:30am with fellowship time following. It is good to be able to gather as one

community over the summer (rather than in our usual “8:30 people” and “10:30 people” divisions)! The Endowment committee will meet tomorrow to decide on scholarship winners and 2019 grants. The Child Care Center continues to have a good 2019 financially and otherwise. They are staying very close to budget. The next steps for the Wildfire collaboration discussion is to hire a part time organizer (with grant money received from the synod) to help us think about how we can work together to know and serve our community. The Stewardship for All Seasons process is resuming with a meeting this Thursday. Our consultant would like to schedule a one-hour online meeting with the council and Stewardship team. He is available the night of our June council meeting at 6:30pm. I’m wondering if we can do that and follow that with our regular meeting. PASTOR ASHLEY REPORT Connect at Caribou – the 1st Monday of each month: June 3, July 1, August 5. June is crazy! CUSTODIAN’S CORNER By Tom Wiblishauser

ROOF VALLEY OVERFLOW

Over the last few years I have noticed a huge volume of water overflowing at our roof valleys, only to recently find a huge build up of leaves and roof granules at each one. Thank you for recently bringing this to my attention (carpet wet at patio door) so I may again do the clean roof-gutter dance. Many thanks to all youth who

helped pick up outside trash on

the first Sunday of May, our

summer grounds & sprinkler

crew who have just begun,

Columbarium Gardeners, and all

HNLC members who helped with

the Spring Clean Up. If you want

to dance with the grounds this

summer you may contact the

grounds crew on any Thursday

morning, the office, or me.

Book Look

Our four- legged friends are the heroes in It Takes a Dog to Raise a Village by Ruth Gordon. This collection of true stories celebrates the lives of nine dogs who spurned confinement and one-family ownership. Each dog’s tale is unique: Boozer had his own bank account and appeared on Good Morning America; Owney spent his life riding U.S. mail trains and can now be seen in the Smithsonian Institute; Greyfriars Bobby snuck into the cemetery every night for 14 years to sleep on his deceased master’s grave; Lampo rode the rails all over Italy but always returned to the same station. These extraordinary dogs all share the same independent spirit that inspires human admiration and devotion. It Takes a Dog to Raise a Village is a tribute to their spirit and their unusual bonds with the humans who knew them. This is for all dog lovers!

“Osseo pair continue to donate time to Robbinsdale School District, long after leaving New Hope.”

This is the headline of a SunSailor newspaper article referencing Dorothy and Warren Jorenby. They have been volunteering for 20 years. They starting by conducting vision and hearing screening tests.

Hearing screenings have since been eliminated, but they still conduct vision screening every year. The Jorenbys are also at Meadow Lake Elementary School each week doing one-on-one reading sessions with students. They began working with second-graders and Dorothy says they have recently “been promoted” to working with fourth-graders. Warren and Dorothy didn’t remember how long they had been volunteering and were surprised when their names were mentioned at the May 2nd Volunteer Recognition Breakfast.

Hats off to Rev. Warren and Dorothy Jorenby!!

Back in March, the Outreach Committee was asked by Pastor Jason to partner with the Wildfire churches – specifically St. James – in a program that they’ve been helping for the past four years.

Families Moving Forward is a Beacon program (partnering with Hennepin County) that offers families experiencing homelessness hospitality, emergency shelter and a path to home with support for stability. Volunteers from about 80 congregations throughout the Twin Cities metro area create shelter space at their churches. In addition to a safe place to sleep and a warm meal, volunteers share kindness and compassion with these families. Completing the circle of support, professional staff work closely with each family to address their unique barriers to stability, so they may leave this shelter program for permanent housing.

For one entire week, three times a year, St. James houses multiple families (up to 20 people) at their church. They provide overnight accommodations as well as dinner and breakfast for all those staying for the week. The Wildfire partner churches share the duties of providing the meals as well as fellowship in the evenings. This includes activities for the younger guests and general hospitality for the adults.

For the week of April 21 – 27, the members of Holy Nativity Outreach Committee (Karen Adamson, Nancy Anderson, and

Cindy Ernst) partnered with volunteers from House of Hope to provide dinner on Tuesday and dessert on Friday. They also helped with clean-up and hospitality. Nancy stayed overnight on Tuesday (and set up breakfast on Wednesday morning) to provide a break for the coordinator from St. James who typically stays the entire week.

Holy Nativity also donated additional supplies for St. James, which provides linens and bathroom products for the families. This included four sets of new towels and washcloths as well as two personal care bags for each family filled with travel-sized products to take with them to their next weekly stay (see pictures). These were funded by the Benevolence Fund, which was created for missions such as these.

Holy Nativity will be partnering with these churches at the end of May and again the first week of November. We are looking for more volunteers to help with providing the food and hospitality for the two days that we partner with House of Hope.

Please contact Nancy Anderson for more information OR if you’re interested in helping with this critical mission.

Holy Nativity has been our church

since 1965.

Thank you for your prayers,

cards and phone calls.

God bless each and every one

of you.

With love for all, Jan and Harold Lund

COUNCIL MINUTES continued

Financial Report: Income vs Expenses 1. The operating income vs expenses was again a positive value(+$3,500) for April. This helped to reduce the YTD deficit to approximately ($2,900) 2. The financial picture can be reviewed two ways. One is the actual numbers and the other is the budgeted numbers. The actual numbers show a YTD deficit of ($2,900), which is much better than the last few years. The budgeted plan paints a different story. The budget indicates that the income is more than $15,000 below plan. It also indicates that the expenses are also about $13,600 under plan. These numbers are pretty much attributed to input from the SAS program. Through April very little has been spent on new programs as suggested in the SAS literature. Also, if the income doesn't improve and SAS programs are started this could lead to an increase in the actual operating deficit.

A vendor has been selected to repair the cupola. Work will be started as soon as the vendor can move in the equipment needed. Bids are in process for some of the other work. Report M/S/Approved.

The Pastor’s Word

I went on my first mission trip the summer after I finished eighth grade. My youth group went to Bay City, Michigan, with an organization called Group Mission Trips. It was a week of hard work and lots of growth; I made new friends, drew closer to Jesus, and learned how to remove and replace a toilet and paint a home’s interior. Most importantly, I learned that serving others is sometimes hard—it can be smelly, tiring work that doesn’t get noticed or appreciated. But that doesn’t make it any less important.

This month, 13 students and 3 adults will be heading to Green Bay, Wisconsin for a home-repair mission trip. We are using the same organization—Group Mission Trips—that facilitated my mission trip experience all those years ago. In fact, this will be my 24th week of service with this organization! They are near and dear to my heart for the impact they have made on my life, my faith, and my vocation.

Going on a mission trip—even if it is only for a week and even if it is only five hours away—can be a life-changing experience. So I want to thank you for ardently supporting our youth so that they can have the opportunity to get out of their comfort zones, meet new people, serve others, and grow deeper in faith.

The students attending the trip will tell you all about it when they return. But for now, know this: our students will travel to a new city, be assigned a work crew made up of students and adults from other churches, and they will be given a project to complete during the week. They might be painting inside or outside, repairing siding, or building porches and wheel-chair ramps. Whatever they are doing, they’ll be doing it for a resident of Green Bay who cannot maintain their home alone, either due to age, illness, or economic status. During their days, they’ll learn how to problem-solve, work as a team, and accomplish something incredible.

But that isn’t all they will learn. They will learn about the joy that comes from serving others willingly, without expecting anything in return. They will learn about God’s relentless love for them through daily devotions and faith-formation programming. They will learn about hospitality and living in community. They will learn so many things—and it’s thanks to you and your generous support.

So thank you. Thank you for providing the opportunity for these students to expand their horizons, serve others, and grow in faith.

And remember—you don’t have to go away for a week to do these things! There are plenty of opportunities right here to give back and serve. To have your life changed. Consider volunteering with Habitat for Humanity! Consider volunteering at PRISM. Think about helping out at the Crisis Nursery or at TreeHouse. If you are looking for ways to give back and to serve others, talk to me! We can brainstorm some awesome ideas together.

Our students will be transformed, in some way or another, on this summer’s mission trip. How will you experience transformation this summer?

Peace, Pastor Ashley

WELCA wants to thank everyone who helped make the Ladies Salad Supper such a huge success. The set up, men cleaning up and serving, the ladies that helped with the name tags, the quilters and the

raffle tickets. Also, thanks to Sharon Brynstad for arranging to have the Treble Tones entertain us. Thank you all for the delicious salads, and to the Circles that furnished the bars.

Quilt winners were Julie Olson, Pearl

Anderson, and Kari Johnson. $391.00 was collected with proceeds to be used for quilting supplies.
