Welcome to Fire Island National Seashore
The annual Tide Tables booklet is a tradition at Fire Island NationalSeashore. It is provided as a benefit to all park users but is preparedprimarily for individuals who have obtained permits to drive off-road vehicles on Fire Island’s beach. The beach is a dynamic systemthat is constantly changing. Every tide provides a new sceniclandscape. To protect that landscape and maintain Fire Island’sremote character and natural resources, beach driving is limited.
From Long Island, New York to Brownsville, Texas, a string ofbarrier islands are located along the United States coastline. Barrierislands are large dynamic sandbars, which are constantly movingand changing. They are shaped by tides, wave action, off-shoresand movement, and human manipulation. Fire Island is one offive barrier islands along the south shore of Long Island.
Mycorrhyzal fungi bind sandgrains to rootlets, enhancingresistance to erosion.
Beneath its visible leaves, beach grass rhizomes androotlets secure grains of sandthat form the protectiveprimary dune.
Overwashes are a cyclical part of the changing form of barrier islands.Fire Island National Seashore 3
Fire Island is 32 miles long with a south-facing shoreline and hasbeen migrating from the east to the west. In 1826, the first FireIsland Lighthouse was built on the western end of the island.Today, the Fire Island Inlet is more than 5 miles west of theLighthouse. The beach is constantly changing due to cyclicerosion and accretion of sand.
The dunes are the backbone of this dynamic barrier island thatbuffers Long Island from the forces of the Atlantic Ocean.Naturally formed dunes consist of multiple layers of sand heldtogether by the roots and rhizomes of beach grass. Foot and/orvehicle traffic easily damages beach grass and its roots. To protectFire Island’s dunes always use designated dune crossings andnever drive within twenty feet of the base of the dunes or thevegetation line.
Driving permits are required for all off-road driving on FireIsland. Unpermitted vehicles are restricted to roads and parkinglots near the bridges connecting Fire Island to Long Island.Beach driving is permitted for some recreational uses and to alimited number of residents, contractors, essential serviceproviders, public utilities, and official vehicles to gain access tocommunities with the park’s boundaries.
Thank you for your efforts to help preserve andprotect Fire Island.

Beach Driving PermitsA valid permit is required for every vehicle driven on Fire Islandbeaches. Each Fire Island National Seashore permit has its ownstipulations and requirements. Vehicles may not cross dunes, damage or drive within 20 feet of vegetation, or enter thedesignated wilderness area. Smith Point County Park and RobertMoses State Park have separate recreational use permits.
Sportsman's Vehicle Permits (Recreational)Recreational vehicles are permitted to drive on designatedportions of Fire Island National Seashore beach (see map, page12) as a means of access for fishing or hunting. Permits are issuedat the Otis Pike Wilderness Visitor Center at Smith Point on orafter September 1, for use between September 15 and December31, unless beach conditions prevent or restrict driving activities. The cost of these permits is $50.00. Call 631-281-3010 for hoursof operation.
Non-Recreational Vehicle PermitsA limited number of resident, contractor, public utility andessential service vehicles may be allowed access, subject toconditions established for each individual permit. Applicationsfor non-recreational vehicle permits are made through the ChiefRanger's Office at Fire Island National Seashore, 120 LaurelStreet, Patchogue, NY 11772. Call 631-687-4758 for information.
Off-road driving regulationshelp protect natural beachesand primary dunes at FireIsland National Seashore, while providing a reasonableamount of access to islanddevelopments.

Access to Fire Island CommunitiesWhen Fire Island National Seashore was established in 1964,its enabling legislation stated that seventeen communities andpreexisting commercial uses would be allowed to remain.
Today each community has its own character, providing a greatdiversity of experiences for visitors and residents.
A limited number of resident, contractor, public utility andessential service vehicles may be allowed to drive on the beachand over National Park Service land to access homes or provideservices for the homes and businesses on Fire Island. Homeownership does not automatically entitle one to a vehicle permit.
If you have one of the limited driving permits, please rememberto be respectful of the park’s and communities’ resources andinfrastructure. Whenever driving on the beach or through thecommunities, always be alert for and considerate of the peoplewho share the road, and always be respectful of private propertyrights.
At certain times of the year, beach traffic may need to bediverted through some ofthe Fire Island communities.
While roads through thesecommunities do not easilyaccommodate the 4-wheeldrive vehicles needed fordriving on the beach, this isa sacrifice most people arewilling to make in order toretain the character of FireIsland’s communities.
Limited driving helps retain the character of Fire Island and has led to alternatemeans of transportation; the “little red wagon” is a common sight on Fire Island.
Living on Fire Island meanslearning to co-exist withwildlife.

Off-Road Vehicle Rules and RegulationsDesignated Use OnlyRecreational vehicles are permitted on Fire Island beaches as a means of access for fishingand hunting activities only. Non-recreational vehicles are permitted access only under theconditions stipulated in each permit.
Check StationsAll vehicles must access Fire Island National Seashore through check stations only.
Speed LimitsSpeed limit is 5 m.p.h. within 100 feet of pedestrians, near a beach entrance, or nearposted endangered species habitat or stopped vehicles. Maximum speed on beach is20 m.p.h..
Prohibited ActivitiesAccess other then through the check station, riding on tailgates or bumpers, andbuilding fires are prohibited. Letting dogs off leash is not allowed. Feeding wildlifeand use of metal detectors are prohibited.
Stay 20 Feet Away from Dune VegetationTo protect the fragile primary dunes, these rules are strictly enforced: drive at least 20 feetfrom the base of dune or vegetation line to protect the fragile root system (rhizomes). Ifsurf approaches the 20 foot boundary, the beach will be closed to driving. Always stay tothe seaward side of any posts. Never drive on, through or behind the dunes.
Beach Closures Fire Island beaches may be closed to driving at any time due to storms, extremely high
tides, or other hazardous conditions. Summer vehicle access is restricted to special or essential services and law enforcement. The beach from the Wilderness Visitor Center at Smith Point to Long Cove will be closed
to driving from March 15 through Labor Day (later if required), in compliance with thepark's endangered species habitat protection plan. Recreational drivers may not enter the beach through the open emergency vehicle
entrance when the recreational driving gate is closed. If the west end beach is closed, non-recreational permittees must use the inside route
(Burma Trail).
Weekend RestrictionsFrom September 15 through October 31, no entry is allowed on the beach between 9 a.m.and 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Recreational vehicles (from Long Cove toSmith Point) that enter before 9 a.m. may remain on the beach, but upon departure, maynot re-enter until 6 p.m. Contractors, residents, municipal and essential service drivershave additional weekend restrictions.
National Park Service rangersand Suffolk County PoliceMarine Bureau patrol Fire IslandNational Seashore, enforcingdriving regulations on thebeach and on other park lands.
Never underestimate the powerof the ocean.
Normally, vehicle travellingeast—on the ocean side—hasthe right-of-way.

Time beach driving carefully. As a rule of thumb, Fire Islandbeaches are generally passablefrom 3 hours before to 3 hoursafter low tide.
Understanding TidesApproximately 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by a relatively thinlayer of water, which responds to the gravitational attraction of the sun andmoon with a daily cycle of high and low tides. Times can be predictable andvary by location. This booklet contains the Moriches Inlet tides for 2010.
Tide changes occur from east to west. Correlations between tides at twodifferent points are neither exact nor consistent, but the map in this bookletwill help you estimate the tide for your location. Keep in mind that storms orhigh winds may cause more extreme tides. The "feet" columns list how manyfeet above or below mean low water each tide is expected to be.

Driving SafetyFor your safety, carry a jack and jack board, spare tire, shovel, tow line withchain or hook, tire pressure gauge, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher. Alwayslower tire pressure to 15-20 psi (pounds per square inch) to prevent washboardtracks. On the beach, stay in established tracks and at least 20 feet seaward ofthe beach grass.
If You Become Stuck in the Sand... Do not spin your tires. Spinning will dig the vehicle in deeper. Check to make sure you are in four-wheel drive. Lower tire pressure to 15-18 psi. (Use caution below 15 psi.) Dig a small amount of sand away from the front and rear of all
four tires. If you are really buried, jack up all four wheels in turn and
shovel sand underneath. Slowly attempt to drive backwards into your tire tracks where
the sand is compacted. Keep front tires straight while trying to free your vehicle. Proceed evenly, keeping up your momentum and speed
without spinning your tires.
Tow Service is not readily available on Fire Island
Never drive on beach grass. The 20-foot “Rhizome Rule”was established to helpprotect and encourage thegrowth of dunes.
A weakened dune line leaveshomes and habitats behind itmore vulnerable to stormdamage, and increases theisland’s susceptibility to abreach.
The ocean tide on Fire Island issemi-diurnal (twice a day). Itsaverage tidal range (amplitude)is about 4 feet (1.25 meters).

Fire Island National Seashore 21
22 2010 Tide Tables
SpringIn early spring, piping plovers begin to arrive on Fire Island.By April, suitable piping plover habitat is marked andprotected with symbolic fencing. Piping plovers aremonitored daily beginning in early spring, while breedingand nesting take place from April through June. Nestmonitoring occurs once a full nest clutch of 4 eggs is observed. As nests are established, NPS staff construct predatorexclosures around the nest to protect both nest and eggs.
SummerPiping plover nests begin to hatch in early summer once eggs have reached the 27 dayincubation period. In accordance with recovery effort guidelines, off-road vehiclerestrictions are implemented once this occurs to ensure the safety of the newborn chicks. This typically lasts until the end of the piping plover season. The piping plover seasonculminates in August. This is the period when most chicks have reached 25 days of age, have begun to fly and are considered fledged.
FallSymbolic fencing remains in place through the fall to protect threatened and endangeredvegetative species. Seabeach amaranth and seabeach knotweed, two protected species, occur along the shoreline of Fire Island and are inventoried by resource managementpersonnel.
Fire Island NationalSeashore has beenmonitoring the status ofthe following species thatdepend on coastalhabitats since 1986:
