CASTLES (continued):• The famous Tower of London began as a

timber fortress in an earthen enclosure on the north bank of the Thames in London. In 1078, William the Conqueror replaced this timber fortress with a massive stone fortress called the Great Tower. William needed to show his authority and protect his new kingdom.

• In the Middle East, the Crusaders developed great castles with double circuits of curving outer walls and towers to overlook the entire wall. These castles influenced castle building throughout Europe and the British Isles, and the early 13th-century medieval castle was a marriage of Norman, English and Byzantine styles. Two good examples of this are the Château Gaillard on the Seine in France and the Conisbrough Castle in England.

• One of the last tower houses to be built in Scotland was Lethendy Tower, dating back to 1678.

• No two castles are the same. This is due to topography, taste, available materials and the ability of the designer.

• The spiral stairs in castle towers are designed to ascend clockwise in an effort to make the attackers expose more of their body in order to use the sword in their right hand.

• At Exeter Castle in England in 1136, the garrison used wine to extinguish fires from a siege.

• The largest inhabited castle in the world is Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom.

• There were once about 5,000 castles in Japan, but today there are only about a dozen original feudal castles left.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The week promises a calmer aspect. Although there might be some lingering effects of a recent job problem, things should continue to ease up. Also expect a change in a home-based situation.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) If you feel uneasy about a colleague’s suggestion, it might be that your wise inner Taurean guide is alerting you to a potential problem. Stepping away could turn out to be the right thing to do.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A family get-together opens up new opportunities for renewing ties. It can be especially effective in dealing with disagreements that should have been, but never were, fully resolved.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might be surprised at the response you get to a recent decision. You might be even more surprised by the reasons behind it. In any event, you’ll learn something important.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your aspects favor resolving any tensions left over from a recent incident. You might want to consider having a “clear the air” talk as soon as you can. A call can lead to a change of plans.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Avoid repeating yourself. If your first few efforts fail to connect, maybe it’s because you haven’t found the right way to get your message across. Try changing your approach.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good intentions plus a strong resolve to succeed can take you where you want to go. Don’t give up just because someone suggests you might be pursuing an impossible cause.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected setback can be a blessing in disguise. Use it to recheck your facts and how you’ve presented them. Meanwhile, look for ways to expand your contacts.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You should finally be seeing a positive change in a recent personal situation. However, an on-the-job matter might need more attention than you realized. Stay with it.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While you should be close to completing an important matter, you still need to focus on being focused. But things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and friends.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A certain matter might take an unexpected turn. Don’t simply accept it; ask for an explanation. What you learn might be helpful in shifting the situation around to your benefit.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Projecting a positive attitude helps restore calm even when you’re confronting some pretty stormy situations. Stay the course. The outcome will be well worth your efforts.

BORN THIS WEEK: While you enjoy tradition and stability, you also appreciate the good things that change can bring.

WILDFLOWERS (continued):• Skunk cabbage is a swamp-loving plant that is

well named. It blooms in February and March in swampy areas and produces an odd-looking flower before producing any leaves. The flowers resemble pins in a pincushion. When the plant is bruised, it smells awful.

• Native Americans used the orange sap of the bloodroot plant to color or paint their faces for warfare or ceremonies and to dye baskets. The flowers on a bloodroot plant are so delicate that it cannot be picked successfully. The petals fall off with the slightest touch or breeze. The sap comes from the stem.

• Mistletoe is a plant we traditionally associate with Christmas. Unlike most wildflowers that are rooted in soil, this plant is termed a “semi-parasite” because it draws water and minerals from a host plant. It typically grows on hardwood trees in the southern United States producing small white berries coated with a sticky substance that is toxic to humans.

• Dodder or Love Vine is unusual because it is a true parasite. Unlike semi-parasitic mistletoe, which produces green leaves, dodder vines are gold in color. Shortly after dodder seeds sprout, root-like structures attach themselves to a host plant, and the dodder plant draws all of its nourishment from the host plant. Common Dutch clover is a host plant for several dodder species.

• The Southern or evergreen magnolia is emblematic of the Southern states in America. The flower is the State Flower for Louisiana and Mississippi. What some readers may not know is the large size of this flower. Flowers range from 7 to 10 inches across — That’s the size of a dinner plate! Also interesting is that magnolia flowers are pollinated by beetles.

• Wildflower festivals are popular in many different areas. The 25th Annual Mountain Flower Fine Art & Wine Festival in Dahlonega, Georgia, is held the third weekend in May. The Dahlonega Master Gardeners present wildflower displays, walks and tours.

• The Mount Pisgah Arboretum in Oregon also has a Wildflower Festival in May. Always the Sunday after Mother’s Day, this year’s event will be May 15, 2011. Guided hikes are available, and 300 to 400 species of wildflowers are displayed.

• The Waterton Wildflower Festival is a nine-day event in June at Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, across the border from Glacier National Park. Waterton is an International Peace Park and World Heritage Site. Due to the conjunction of prairie and mountain ecosystems, the park has a truly unique variety of wildflowers. It is home to more than 50 of Canada’s rarest flowers including 30 species that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. In fact, Waterton has more flowers than any other mountain park. The festival has educational courses, art exhibits, workshops, hikes and even horseback rides.

• Crested Butte, the official wildflower capital of Colorado, began hosting a wildflower festival in 1986. Now the week-long celebration has over 200 classes, including art and cooking classes with wildflowers. The 2011 event is set for July 11-17.

• The Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival is a multi-day arts and music festival celebrating its 19th anniversary this year. Held north of Dallas in Richardson, Texas, it got its name from the wildflowers planted throughout the parks, medians and roadsides of Richardson.

• Do you know which United States’ First Lady is considered the “Environmental First Lady”? Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson, otherwise known as Lady Bird, was the wife of the 36th President, Lyndon Johnson. (The nickname was supposedly given to her by a nursemaid when she was a child who said she was “as purty as a lady bird.”)

• While she was First Lady, Mrs. Johnson created

WILDFLOWERS (continued):the First Lady’s Committee for a More Beautiful Capital. She wanted to create natural landscaping to preserve the beauty of the nation’s capital. Later she expanded the program to include the entire nation.

• In 1982, Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes founded the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, originally called the National Wildflower Research Center, “to introduce people to the beauty and diversity of wildflowers and other native plants.”

•The center in Austin, Texas, has public gardens, woodlands and meadows and is an internationally influential research center. In 2006, the center

became an Organized Research Unit of the University of Texas at Austin.

• Wildflower research has far-reaching implications. One wildflower that has made a huge difference in many lives worldwide is Wild Foxglove, botanically known as Digitalis purpurea. The medicine derived from this plant is widely used today to treat heart disease. As Lady Bird has said, “Surely there are others like digitalis waiting out there.”

• So, whether you’re canoeing down a stream, hiking in the woods, or observing the median on a road trip, notice the wildflowers. Realize their value to society comes from more than their natural beauty.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:SUSAN BOYLE

In April 2009, life changed for Susan Boyle, a single ordinary woman from Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland. She may have looked ordinary, but she definitely didn’t sound that way. • Boyle was born April 1, 1961, the youngest of

nine children. Her mother was 47 at the time of her birth, and Boyle was deprived of oxygen briefly during the difficult birth. She has some difficulties learning and because of this was bullied as a child.

• Singing in her local Catholic Church brought Boyle great joy and also helped her to express herself. Her lovely voice was known by those in her hometown who had heard her. She also sang karaoke locally and dreamed of singing professionally. Fred O’Neil, her voice coach, encouraged her to audition for “Britain’s Got Talent.”

• When Boyle came onto the stage for the popular reality show, the reaction from the judges and the crowd was kind of ho hum — Here we go again with another bad audition! Although her looks were plain, her banter with the judges revealed

Greetings ....and now, Sayonara. It was only two issues ago when I mentioned my new shoes from Tokyo. Well, it will be sometime before I get anything else from there.

My current concern is for the welfare of one of my former guitar students, Dustin Schmauder. Imagine this, his parents Teri and Vel Schmauder arrived at Haneda Tokyo airport 10 hours before the big earth-quake. Their plan was to head south upon arrival, which they did to visit Dustin who is in school there and searching for the meaning of life among other things.

Teri, by the way, is our man from Manulife and one of the sponsors of my current Coldstream Coffee House career. There you go, everything seems to connect, but the tremors that I experienced in Tokyo while em-ployed by the Khono Guitar Company were less than zero compared to what is now occurring in Japan.Manfred’s Guitar did go to live to Lumby, and with singer, activist, piano tuner, Priscilla Judd and a won-derful pianist Svetlana Ufimzeff. There were some nice musical contributions for the eyes and ears of those attending. Priscilla played on a very beautiful guitar that her husband made. What a story about its construction. She has a CD featuring songs about water, fish and the environment.

For an opener, I played a Japanese arrangement of Sakura on my Japanese Takamine Guitar and we observed our moment of silence for the people of Japan. It is spring time over there, regardless of the foibles of human nature and natural disruptions. By the way, David Suzuki’s special on CBC TV, A Force of Nature, accompanied by a glut of ads, was ironically well-timed. I wonder if you saw that.

Maurice from Lumby and the Krazy Llama Cafe did a hot rendition of Greensleeves with me during the first set. You remember him as the front man for Incanto, the Chilean group from last month. Not to be outdone by the first, second and third acts, the Coldstream Coffee House alumni band known as Steel Wound ended the show. Ironically, one of their strings became unwound during the 2nd last song. That is an example of my groan humour, but never-theless true. Thanks to Nick Hodge and The Mona-shee Arts Council for the Lumby concert experience. This week, Sat. March 19, will bring Pauline Kyllonen to the CCH stage - no stranger to hard work, beautiful words and music, the labours of writing and market-ing. She will take time to be with us in solo style. I have her CD that features some fine music friends of hers.

Finally, two more Coffee House events after March 19, and away we go to chase the fish, follow the sun and meet new people in different loca-tions on this planet.

her jovial, funny personality. Then she had the opportunity to wow the audience, the judges and the world, which she certainly did.

• Boyle’s words while on stage, before singing, on January 21, 2009 (it aired on television on April 11), “I’m trying to be a professional singer. I’ve never been given the chance before but here’s hoping it’ll change.” Well, change happened, and it happened quickly.

• Boyle sang “I Dream a Dream” from “Les Miserables” on stage that night, and her fame started spreading around the world like wildfire.

• Boyle came in second place on “Britain’s Got Talent,” but she captured the hearts and ears of fans worldwide and had a phenomenal year. People were watching her on YouTube and accessing her information on Wikipedia in record numbers immediately following the show. Her story was the No. 2 Top Story by the Associated Press in 2009.

• On November 23, 2009, Boyle’s first album, “I Dreamed a Dream,” was released and the sales shot through the roof. Here are some of the statistics

for her album sales: the best selling female debut album worldwide ever; oldest person ever to have a debut album open at No. 1; No. 1 on European and World charts for seven weeks; fastest selling debut album in United Kingdom history; highest one week sales ever in Australian history; and one of only two singers in the United States to sell over three million CDs in 2009. (Taylor Swift was the other singer, and it took her 12 months; Boyle’s album sold that many in less than six weeks!) By January 21, 2010, one year from the taping of “Britain’s Got Talent,” Boyle’s debut album had achieved Platinum sales status approximately 44 times in 12 countries and Gold in 15 more countries. There were other honors that came her way in 2010 including official recognition by the “Guinness World Records” for several records.

• Boyle’s autobiography, “Susan Boyle, The Woman I Was Born to Be,” was released on October 12, 2010, and her second album, “The Gift,” a Christmas album, was released on November 9, 2010. Both are sure to set some records as the story of the woman from a small Scottish village continues to inspire her loyal and admiring fans. Dreams really can come true!

“What is Love About?”by Marty Kelly

Marty Kelly is a standup comic who has appeared on Just For Laughs and Open Mike with Mike Bullard. Marty currently resides in Vernon.

Email: [email protected]

What is love about? I love biking, roller skating , beaches, lakes, boating, the mountains, the prairies, the snow, heck I even love the rain but that is not the love I am concerned with today. I am talking about the biggest mystery that any of us has ever faced let alone attempted to try to under-stand. The love that a man feels for a woman. Let's go back for a moment. You are fifteen years old and that girl across the room has something that just knaws at your bones. You try not to stare at her, yet you find every time the teacher turns her back your catching a glimpse of her hair, her sweater and you are noticing her cute pony tail she seems to always get just right. "What is the capitol of Quebec?" the teacher asks and you thrust your hand in the air not truly knowing the answer but you realize if you speak out she will probably turn around and notice you. " Winnipeg," you blurt out, knowing that is wrong but people laughed so maybe she will think your funny. At the very least she looked your way.The next time your in class you find yourself sitting behind her so you're in range and now you can somehow get her personal attention. Pull her hair , drop your book ask her about last nights homework , just get her to really notice you! Where is that courage you insisted you were going to have last night? For some reason your mouth just does not function except to answer the teacher's questions with incredibly dumb responses and earn you the reputation of Class Clown!.Brainstorm, "I'll drop an anonymous note in the grate hole of her locker asking her to meet me at McDonalds tonight!"

Seven O' clock rolls around and she's a no show, your heart is crushed but only because you do not realize she is across the street hiding behind a parked car desperately trying to see who could have slipped her that note because she is as frightened as you are.The next week in school you finally, (after talking to yourself every night before bed) drum up the courage to ask her to the Valentines dance. Incredibly, she says Yes and you act like it's no big thing until you round the corner out of sight, kick your heels together, stumble, fall flat on your face and look up only to see that she was actually right behind, following you to math class. Whoops! That long awaited evening comes around and now you just cannot find the courage to ask her to dance, so you stand on the guys side of the gymnasium for the whole evening, joking about the way those dumb girls look on the other side of the gym, yet in your head you are imagining do-ing a John Travolta dance move with your now disconnected date while the whole school surrounds you, applauds and oooo's and aaawww's...! That was love at fifteen, but what is it like when you grow older. I know that the young believe that we never feel that way again. How can a person so OLD and settled feel such deep feelings? I would have agreed with you several years ago but now I find myself in a similiar situation. I stumble when I walk and mumble when I talk. I feel like a kid again and I have to admit it's a wonderful feeling and it hasn't changed. However, I still don't know what to say but hey, maybe I could start by pulling her hair?

PARK IT HERE!For years, cities have had to come up with solutions for parking cars to allow access for employees and people doing business as well as for visitors and tourists.• Whether called a car park, parking garage, parking

structure, parking ramp, parking deck, parkade or some other name, buildings equipped to hold lots of cars have become a necessity for crowded cities. Unique parking structures are found in cities around the world. Architects have not only worked to solve parking problems but have designed some memorable structures.

• One of the earliest, if not the earliest, parking garages was the Botanic Gardens Garage in Glasgow, Scotland, built between 1906 and 1912. It had cages for the cars and a distinctive façade of green and white glazed terracotta tiles. Preservationists have been fighting to keep it from demolition.

• The first known multi-story car structure in the United States was built in 1918 for the Hotel LaSalle in Chicago. It was demolished in 2005.

• Designers of those first parking structures would be astonished at the size, design and automation available today.

• Volkswagen’s Autostadt in Woofsburg, Germany,

is an amusement park based on an automotive theme as well as a place to purchase a new car. It includes a car museum, car-factory tours, driving courses and more. Two 20-story car silos housing 800 new Volkswagens are attention-grabbing sites. If you decide to buy, a central robotic arm will travel up the tower and deliver your car to you with an odometer that reads zero. It is possible for six people to travel up the silo in the same way the cars do for a view of the towers’ interior.

• A parking area combined with shopping, restaurants, etc. in Tokyo Bay is quite a tourist destination. Even though it is expensive to access by toll, the Umihotaru, “floating car park,” is a must see. Its design resembles a cruise ship, and it is built on an artificial island where Japan’s longest tunnel, the Aqualine, ends and becomes a bridge.

• Another parking structure connected to water is Marina City on the Chicago River in Chicago that was built to discourage city residents from moving to the suburbs. Two 65-story towers that were part of the complex and completed in 1964 contain 18 floors for parking. Each tower of the “corncob” structure accommodates 450 autos.

• Turning from water to books, the “Community Bookshelf” parking garage for the Central Library in Kansas City, Missouri, looks like a row of books on a library shelf. The south wall of the garage is designed with signboard mylar book spines measuring 25 feet by 9 feet (7.6 m x 2.7 m). The books showcased are 22 titles that were suggested by readers.

• Cologne, Germany, has Europe’s longest parking structure. Rheinauhafen is a parking tunnel that is 2.5 miles (4 km) long with three strategically placed entrances.

• The Michigan Theater in Detroit, Michigan, is another unusual parking garage. Originally a

grand theater built in 1926 on the site where Henry Ford built his first automobile, it was scheduled for demolition in 1976. Engineers saved the historic building by redesigning it into a three-story garage.

• R. Omar Barker said it well in 1946: “Here lies an urban gentleman, who failed to make his mark, he died with his lifetime squandered, hunting some place to park!”

On March 24, 1765, Parliament passes the Quar-tering Act, which required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies, local inns, livery stables, ale houses, uninhabited houses, outhouses or barns. Forcing colonists from their own homes was not the intent of the law.

On March 21, 1871, journalist Henry Morton Stanley begins his famous search through Africa for missing British explorer Dr. David Living-stone. When Stanley found him on Oct. 27, he stepped forward and stretched out his hand: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”

On March 25, 1911, flames engulf the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City, killing 145 workers. Only one elevator was op-erational in the 10-story building. There were two stairways down to the street, but one was locked from the outside. The inside fire hose was rotted and its valve was rusted shut.

On March 26, 1941, Italy attacks the British fleet at Suda Bay, Crete, using manned torpedoes to sink a British cruiser. Known as the “Chariot,” the manned torpedo was ridden by “pilots” to “drive” them to their targets in the harbor.

On March 23, 1962, Pakistan’s governor, Ayub Khan, gives first lady Jacqueline Bouvier Ken-nedy a horse she nicknames “Black Jack.” Jackie chose “Black Jack” to serve as the ceremonial riderless horse during Pres. Kennedy’s funeral.

On March 27, 1973, the actor Marlon Brando declines the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “The Godfather” as a protest against Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Ameri-cans in film. The first performer to turn down a Best Actor Oscar was George C. Scott, who declined to accept his award for “Patton” in 1971.

On March 22, 1983, the Pentagon awards a production contract worth more than $1 billion to AM General Corporation to develop 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV). Nicknamed the Humvee, the rug-ged vehicle was designed to transport troops and cargo. In 1992, a civilian version of the Humvee, known as the Hummer, went on sale.

Q: My family loves “The Waltons.” It’s such a won-derful family show; they just don’t make them like this anymore. What is Richard Thomas (John-Boy) doing now, and does he ever see his old cast mem-bers anymore? -- Patricia C., Altoona, Pa.A: I spoke with Richard recently to talk about his latest movie, “Time After Time” for the Hallmark Channel (check your local listings for info), and he told me he does keep in touch with his fellow Wal-tons.“Mary Elizabeth McDonough was just here a few weeks ago, and we had dinner. Michael Learned and I are very close friends. We all keep tabs on each other. I saw Kami (Cotler) not long ago. We don’t all see each other all the time, but there is a great deal of genuine fondness and familial feeling. We love each other a lot.”He is counting on his “Waltons” fans embracing “Time After Time.” As he tells me, the movie is right

up their alley. “This (movie ap-peals to) a segment of the old ’Walton’ audience. I consider it a nice family movie and some-thing that the family can enjoy together.”***Q: My husband told me that a crewmember from “Deadli-est Catch” died. Is that true? If so, who was it? -- Francine R.,

Rochester, N.Y.A: Justin Tennison (some sources say he was 33, some 34), deckhand for the “Time Bandit” crab fish-ing boat, died in his sleep in late February. An au-topsy is scheduled, and as of this writing, no cause of death has been announced. Beer, hard liquor and a small amount of marijuana were found in the Alaska hotel room where his body was found. Justin will ap-pear posthumously in the seventh season of “Dead-liest Catch,” whose premiere date has yet to be an-nounced by Discovery Channel. ***Q: I loved the movie “The Hangover.” I’ve heard rumors that there is going to be a sequel. Is there? -- Dave F., via e-mailA: Get ready for a roadtrip with the guys. “The Hang-over: Part II” hits theaters May 26 (Memorial Day weekend), and the boys are headed to Thailand for Stu’s (Ed Helms) wedding. All the guys are back for the sequel (Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Jus-tin Bartha and Ken Jeong), with a cameo by Liam Neeson. ***Q: While I like all these new reality-competition shows, I need to know when my favorite one, “Danc-ing With the Stars,” will return, and who will be the stars this season. - Gina R., via e-mailA: “Dancing With the Stars” returns for its 12th sea-son on Monday, March 21, at 8 p.m. ET. Eleven ce-lebrities have been tapped to compete this season: Kirstie Alley, “Psycho” Mike Catherwood, Chris Jer-icho, Chelsea Kane, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ralph Mac-chio, Petra Nemcova, Romeo, Hines Ward, Kendra Wilkinson and Wendy Williams.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You recently advised an owner whose cat ran and hid when company arrived not to worry unless it acted “very strange, such as hissing at familiar people, hiding for hours or not eating.” Well, our 6-year-old cat, “Clyde,” hides often when strangers arrive, sometimes for hours. But the weirdest thing is that he hisses and glares at our 3-year-old grandson, and he has done this since Day One. Our grandson is showing signs of being afraid of him and tries to stay as far away as possible. Can anything be done to help this relation-ship? Our grandson has a cat of his own that he gets along great with. Do you think Clyde was abused as a young kitten? We adopted him from a shelter. -- Susan J., via e-mail

DEAR SUSAN: It’s difficult to tell what a pet’s past life was like when adopting from a shelter. Clyde may or may not have been abused as a young kitten,

or he simply may not have been around humans much at all, which also can cause socialization problems. My late great buddy Dodge was born to a barn cat and adopted at about 6 months of age. He was ex-tremely skittish around humans, and it was several months before I could even pet him. While he even-tually became a near-typical housecat, he remained very selective about who could approach him, and he always hid when new humans showed up. Sud-den changes in his environment tended to be very stressful for Dodge, along with unpredictable people (and 3-year-olds can be quite unpredictable!).My advice is to keep Clyde and your grandson separated for now, until your grandson has grown a bit. There’s a chance they will never be friends, but it’s something that you can’t force on Clyde or your grandson. Meantime, continue to provide a support-ive, encouraging environment for your cat.
