A Favorite “Child” (continued):• “Thereweresomefamouswomennovelistsin thosedays,”Child said,“and I intended tobe one.” Alas, though shewrote often andsubmittedmanuscripts regularly to theNewYorker,nonewereeverpublished.• Aftergraduating,Child triedherhandatadvertising while working for a successful home furnishingscompany.Itdidn’tlastlong,asChildwaspromptlyfiredfor“grossinsubordination.”•WhenWorldWarIIbrokeout,Childvolunteeredfor theOffice of StrategicServices (OSS) inWashington,D.C.Sheperformedassignmentsallovertheworld,includingstaysinChinaandSriLanka.• WhileinSriLankain1945,Childbeganseeing her future husband, Paul, a fellowemployeeoftheOSS.ChildandPaulmarriedafterthewarinSeptemberof1946.• PaulandChildmovedtoFrancein1948,whenPaulwasassignedtoworkattheAmericanEmbassyinParis.ItwastherethatChild’slovefor cooking came into full bloom. Shewasquotedassaying,“Thewholeexperiencewasanopeningupofthesoulandspiritforme...Iwashooked,andforlife,asitturnedout.”• In Paris, Child enrolled in the world-renowned “LeCordonBleu” cooking school.Aftersixmonthsoftraining,shechosetoopenher own school with two fellow classmates. • Theynamedtheschool“L’EcoledeTroisGourmandes,”whichtranslatesto“TheSchooloftheThreeGourmands.”• Child and the other two founders of theschoolsetouttocreateacookbookofFrenchcuisine that might be understood and employed by regular folk. • The two-volume cookbookwas releasedin1961,entitled“MasteringtheArtofFrenchCooking.”Thebookwasincrediblysuccessful,remainingthebestsellingcookbookforoverfiveyears.• The book has since become a favoredteaching tool at cooking schools throughout the world. Yet there was a time when it looked like it might never be published at all.• Thewritingofthebookwasagruelingandfrustrating 10-year process forChild and hercollaborators.Shewouldspendmonthstryingtoperfectrecipesforjustasingleingredient.Shewrotetoherprincipalcollaborator,SimcaBeck,duringher frustration:“I’ve justpoached twomore eggs and thrown them down the toilet.”• The initial draft of the bookwas turneddown by the first publisher, as weremany

subsequent drafts. Only after offering it to a differentpublisher,AlfredKnopf,wasitpickedup for publication.• Child’sfirsttelevisionappearancewasonahumbleBostonpublictelevisionstationin1962.Shecookedanomeletonair.Afterasurprisinglypositiveandvocalresponse,shewasinvitedtodoaseries.Herinitialpaywasabout$50ashow.• Child’s show, “TheFrenchChef,” grewquicklybeyondthosehumblebeginnings.Soonafteritsinitialairings,theshowwassyndicatedto96stations.Theshowwasbothacommercialandacriticalhit.In1964,ChildwaspresentedwiththeGeorgeFosterPeabodyAwardforherwork on the show. Twoyears later, shewasgivenanEmmyAwardaswell.• “ T h eFrenchChef”wasproducedanddirectedbyRussMorash.Itranfor199episodesbetween1963and1966.• “TheFrenchChef”wasjustoneofmanyshows Child appeared on during her long career. Other programs included “Julia Child and Company,”“JuliaChildandMoreCompany”and“DinneratJulia’s.”Shewasalsoaregulargueston“GoodMorning,America.”• Childwrotemanyother cookbooksafterherinitialsuccess.Amongthesewere“InJulia’sKitchenwithMaster Chefs,” “BakingwithJulia,” “Julia’sDeliciousLittleDinners” and“Julia’sCasualDinners.”Manyof thesewereaccompanied by their own TV specials.• JuliaChilddiedonAugust13,2004.Shewasjusttwodaysshyofher92ndbirthday.Shewas remembered by her family and friends as a person of great generosity who loved to teach others. Though she once mourned her “lack oftalent,”Childleftanindeliblelegacyinthekitchens of people around the world.• Inadditiontoinspiringboththebookandfilm,“JulieandJulia,”Child’slifeinspiredanexhibit entitled “JuliaChild’sKitchen” to beinstalledattheNationalMuseumofAmericanHistory.•Theinstallationis20feetby14feet.Thesewere the dimensions of Child’s kitchen in Massachusetts.Thoughthewallsandfloorwerecreated for the exhibit, everything else foundthere is from Child’s own former kitchen. The arrangement of everything found inside was assembledexactlytoreplicateChild’soriginalworkspace.•Thereareover1,200individualpiecesfromChildintheexhibit,includingequipmenthousedin the cabinets and drawers. These objects are notvisibletothegeneralpublic,buthundredsof others still are.
