Wondering how to tame the teasing, name-calling and criticism that so often gets in the way of building good relationships between family members -- especially be-tween the kids? Take advantage of Valentine’s Day and the week leading up to it to mend relationships or simply to enhance them in a positive way.

Everyone will be saying something nice when they send these in-house valentines! This activity is a non-threaten-ing vehicle for fostering communication in the family and for sharing some of those good feelings that are sometimes hard to express eye to eye. You might even start a new tra-dition in your family with the valentine box.

Here’s how to get started:Cut a 3-inch slot down the middle of a shoe-box lid.

Cover the lid and the box separately with colorful paper, leaving the slot open. Decorate the lid and the box with valentine materials, such as heart-shaped doilies, stickers and hearts cut from construction paper. For extra writing fun, cut out alphabet letters or words from the newspaper to create simple Val-entine’s Day sayings and glue them on the box, too. Place the lid on the box and tape the sides together. Next, tape a small notepad and pencil or pen on a string to the top of the box.

Between now and Valentine’s Day, keep the box on your kitch-en table. Encourage all family members, and even friends who stop by, to pull a piece of paper off the notepad and jot down a special Valentine’s note to each member of the family. Keep

the comments com-ing, and encourage one another to be positive!

Adults or older sib-lings might help the younger ones with the writing, or each person might draw a picture that expresses his or her feelings. Notes might include comments such as the following: “Katie, you bake great cookies! Love, Dad” or “Mom, Thanks for being such a nice mom. Jessie.”

On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, gather together for a special meal. Open the box and take turns reading the big stack of “love” notes that have accumulated. Enthusiasm will have been building throughout the days preceding Valentine’s Day, so expect your kids to be quite excited!

Nearly 10 new candy “conversation heart” sayings are introduced each year. Recent additions have included “Yeah Right,”

“Puppy Love,” and “Call Home.”

The symbol of the ribbon, which often adorns modern-day Valentines, is rooted in the Middle Ages.

When knights competed in tournaments, their sweethearts often gave them ribbons for good luck.

Some of the oldest handmade Valentines are rebuses, which is Latin for “things” or “that which is indicated by things.” A rebus is a kind of puzzle or riddle, and the pictures indicate the meaning of the card. For example, a picture of a bee and a picture of a

gold mine would indicate the sentiment "Be mine".

• If you’re one of the many Americans who likes a good tailgate party, it’s entirely possible that it’s the highlight of game day for you. In a survey conducted by McCormick Grill Mates during the 2014 football season, 44 percent of respondents said they enjoyed the tailgating more than they enjoyed the game. • Just like your fingerprint, your tongue print is unique. • Spring is traditionally considered the most popular time for weddings, but 2014 saw a spike in nuptials in mid-December. More than 13,000 couples in the U.S. tied the knot on Dec. 13, due in large part to the fact that 12/13/14 fell on a Sat-urday. Anyone else who would like to marry on a number-sequential date will have a long wait; it won’t happen again until January 2, 2034.• If you’re feeling a bit chilled and can’t wait for springtime, con-sider this: On the planet Uranus, winter lasts for 21 years. • You might be surprised to learn that Pennsylvania was not named after William Penn, one of the colony’s founders; in fact, King Charles II granted the land charter to William Penn in repayment of a debt to Penn’s father, Admiral William Penn, and created the name of the sizable land grant by combining the name of the naval officer with the Latin word “sylvania,” which means “woods.” The younger Penn was embarrassed and feared that people would think he named the colony after himself. He petitioned the crown to change the name, but the king refused.

• On Feb. 19, 1473, Nicolaus Coper-nicus is born in Torun, Poland, on the Vistula River. Revered as the father of modern astronomy, Copernicus was the first European scientist to propose that Earth and other planets revolve around the sun.• On Feb. 22, 1819, Spanish minister Do Luis de Onis and U.S. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams sign the Florida Purchase Treaty, in which Spain agrees to cede the remainder of its old province of Florida to the United States. The Treaty put Florida into U.S. hands at no cost beyond the U.S. assumption of $5 million in claims by U.S. citizens against Spain.• On Feb. 21, 1926, glamorous Swed-ish actress Greta Garbo makes her U.S. screen debut in “The Torrent.” Unlike many of her contemporaries, the Nordic beauty successfully made the transition to sound after becoming a star during the silent film era. • On Feb. 16, 1984, Bill Johnson becomes the first American man to win an Olympic gold medal in down-hill skiing, a sport long dominated by European athletes. Johnson quickly became a national hero, though his fame was short-lived and he never again competed in the Olympics.

• • •Q: I have a collection of Department 56 Dickens Village pieces, includ-

ing five of the original houses and accessories. What are they worth, and where can I sell them? -- Laura, Milford, N.H.

A: Your Dickens Village was introduced in 1984, produced by De-partment 56, a company known for its holiday collectibles, including ornaments, Christmas villages and Snowbabies. Owned by Enesco and based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, the products produced by this compa-ny are often difficult to sell in the secondary marketplace. I recommend you attempt to liquidate your collection on eBay. To get an idea of current values, you might want to monitor auction sites. Department56Corner is one of the largest sellers of such items. The telephone number for this company is 866-923-0001.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My poodle mix, “Shep,” loves to jump up on the kitchen counter -- not just put his paws up, but his entire body. He will do it whether we’re in the kitchen or not. My husband thinks it’s funny, but I don’t. How can I get Shep to stop? -- Julia in Phoenix, Arizona

DEAR JULIA: I agree, it’s not funny. Shep clearly thinks it’s all right to jump onto the counter because he’s getting those positive vibes from your husband. And unless you persuade your husband to stop thinking it’s funny, teaching Shep not to do it will be very difficult.

Make sure, of course, that when you’re not in the kitchen,

Keeping a Dog Off the Counter

nothing remains on the countertop that would present a danger to Shep. That includes leftovers, cleaners, houseplants -- anything that he might chew on or ingest.

First things first: Make it clear to Shep that he can’t come into the kitchen at all without your leave. Start by setting up a toddler gate at the entrance. (One that’s pretty high, since it sounds like he’s a good jumper.)

When you’re in the kitchen cooking or cleaning, leave Shep out of it. If he whines, tell him to “sit” and “stay,” and continue working. Once you’ve finished working, you can let him in, as long as he’s supervised. If he tries to jump on the counter, firmly tell him “down,” and escort him outside the toddler gate again.

Both you and your husband need to be on the same page. Shep needs to make the connection that certain behavior in the kitchen will mean he doesn’t get to go in the kitchen. It will take a little while, so be patient, but consistent.

Find Everything For Your Valentine

in Historic Uptown Watertown!

Lace is often used on Valentine decora-tions. The word “lace” comes from the

Latin laques, meaning “to snare or net,” as in to catch a person’s heart.

A True Love Knot, or Endless Knot of Love, was a very popu-lar Valentine in England and the U.S. in the seventeenth cen-tury. As their name implies, these Valentines were drawn as a

knot and could be read from any line and still make sense.

The popular medieval folk belief that birds choose their mates on February 14 made doves a favorite symbol for Valentine cards. The dove was sacred to Venus and other love deities and

was known for choosing a lifelong mate.
