DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please provide information on essential tremor? Thanks. -- D.C.

ANSWER: When people unfamiliar with essential tremor see a person with it, they immediately assume that the person is quite nervous. The shaky hands are a giveaway. It's not "nerves" that are causing the shaki-ness; it's essential tremor. A glitch in one of the brain's movement-control centers has oc-curred. Katharine Hepburn suffered from es-sential tremor. Not only did her hands shake, but so did her head and her voice.

Essential tremor is a common condition. Its other name is familial tremor, indicating that it runs in families. Most affected people can find other relatives who have it.

Trembling hands make it near impossible to bring a spoonful of soup to the mouth. Handwriting often degenerates into a scrawl. Buttoning a shirt or coat becomes a herculean task.

Alcohol abolishes the tremor for a short time. Alcohol can't be used as a treatment. Other medicines, like propranolol (Inderal) and primidone (Mysoline), offer effective control. For seriously disabling tremors, deep-brain stimulation can put an end to them.

People can help control shaking hands by holding their elbows firmly against the body when using their hands for a fine task.

Everyone with essential tremor needs to make the acquaintance of the Inter-national Essential Tremor Foundation at 888-387-3667 (toll-free) or online at www.essentialtremor.org. The foundation is a reliable source of information and can keep you up to date on new treatments.

ters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

PIERRE, S.D. - Gov. Dennis Daugaard has issued an executive proclamation dedicating Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, as Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Day in South Dakota.

The proclamation honors the 75th anniversary of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program and highlights the federal money derived from the program that helps fund wildlife and fish management in South Dakota.

“I think it is appropriate to pay homage to this incredible program on the opening day of South Dakota’s traditional pheasant season,” Gov. Daugaard said. “South Dakota has some of the finest hunting, and fishing found in the United States and throughout our state’s history, hunt-ers and anglers have provided most all of the funds that support management of our state’s fish and wildlife resources. This source of federal funding related to hunt-ing and fishing provides additional money and greatly enhances our work.”

The Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program was

Governor Proclaims Wildlife And Sport Fish Restoration Daystarted in 1937 when Congress, working in cooperation with sportsmen and sporting goods-related businesses, instituted a hunting equipment excise tax paid by manufacturers. A similar tax on fishing equipment was added in 1950. Since its inception, more than $13 billion has been distributed to state game and fish agencies across the nation to help fund management programs.

South Dakota received more than $10.8 million in federal aid last year from the program, which comprised about 22 percent of the Game, Fish and Parks Department operating budget.

“If you’ve ever purchased firearms or ammunition, bows, arrows, fishing lures, rods and reels, hunting or fishing li-censes, you’re part of the most successful effort to conserve fish and wildlife in America,” Gov. Daugaard said. “The effort has resulted in millions of acres of habitat saved and near-mi-raculous recoveries of many populations of game and sport fish. We enjoy many hunting, fishing, and wildlife-related rec-reational opportunities in South Dakota thanks to 75 years of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration programs.”

Leslie Willis BordsonJanuary 9, 1922~January 6, 1944

Leslie Willis Bordson, was born January 9, 1922, in Revere, North Dakota, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Howe. His father died on February 23, 1922. Following his father’s death, his mother moved back to Appleton and later remarried. He grew to manhood in this community and spent the

year 1940 in a CCC Camp at Thompson, previous to his enlistment in the Navy on July 27, 1942. He also worked as a milkman for Doege’s Dairy. He took his basic training at Great Lakes and from here went to Norfolk, Virginia. From there he was stationed in New York, where he went to sea on his assigned ship. On board ship, he served as a ship’s cook third class. Leslie died in the defense of his country when his ship, the destroyer St. Augustine, exploded and sank as the result of a collision about 60 miles off the coast of New York on Thursday, January 6, 1944. Surviving him at the time of his death were his mother, Otilda and step-father John, his two brothers: Alvin and Raymond, and his two sisters: Orpha and Mary Jane. Members of Co. M, Minnesota State Guard, provided a guard of honor and firing squad. The members of the Appleton American Legion Post attended in a body. Bordson Street is located on the very east edge of Appleton.

Q: I have an antique butter dish that I suspect was my grandmother's wedding gift in 1882. It is a pedestal style, with round top that when rolled down exposes the butter. I have not seen another one quite like it. How much do you think it is worth? -- L.B.G., DeBary, Fla.

A: Butter dishes such as the one you have often sell in antique shops in the $45 to $75 range, depending on condition and whether the piece is sterling or plate. The picture you sent does square with your opinion that is from the 1880s, since it has a handsome Victorian design.

Q: I was fortunate to be in the audience of "Phantom of the Opera" at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, about three weeks after the Andrew Lloyd Webber's mu-sical opened. I have a program from that night signed by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, two of the stars of the original production. I would like to find out what it is worth. -- Susan, Spring Branch, Texas

A: I spoke to several autograph dealers, and they seem to agree that your program is worth in the $100 to $200 range, depending on condition and clarity of the signatures.

If you enjoyed that production (as much as I did), you might want to purchase "The Phantom of the Op-era: 25th Anniversary Edition" by Michael Heatley and published by Pavilion Books. Filled with wonderful illustrations, this fascinating book tells the history of the novel by Gaston Leroux, how the musical came to be and even the complete libretto. "Phantom" is, without a doubt, one of the most famous and long-run-ning musicals ever.

• • •Q: Since we are in the middle of another political

election season, I have become curious about three items: a John Kennedy tapestry with JFK in a PT boat, floor tickets to the Democratic Convention in 1964, and a press pass for a Barry Goldwater rally in Phoenix in 1964. -- Marvin, West Palm Beach, Fla.

A: The JFK tapestries generally sell in the $25 to $45 range, the floor tickets are probably worth about $25, and the press pass, $20. These values are based on similar items sold on eBay.

Edwards Optimistic Despite Down YearWhat a difference a year makes. In 2011, Carl Edwards compiled the

best average finish in Chase history, 4.9. Yet still it wasn’t enough to win the Sprint Cup championship. Tony Stewart, who won five of the 10 Chase races, won by a tie-breaker.

In the AAA 400, Edwards finished fifth, which would have been fine if it didn’t match his best finish all year. This year Edwards didn’t even make the Chase, and his Cup career has a certain pattern to it. Three times the Columbia, Mo., native and resident has had big years, and each time he has struggled the following season.

In 2005, Edwards finished third. The following year he was 12th. In 2008, Edwards finished second. The following year he was 11th. In 2011, he finished second. This year he currently ranks 14th.

Edwards, 33, can’t come up with a reason why.“I could sit here, and we could go through every race

and how they went,” he said recently. “I don’t know if you want to do that or not, but a lot of the races have been bad luck, where we got caught up in wrecks or we had trouble at Indy, where I thought we had a pretty decent car.

“We haven’t run as well as we need to run, but that’s the only way I know how to be is an optimist. That’s the only reason I’m sitting here in this suit driving for Jack Roush, because you always have to go out and give it your best. You’ve got to do everything you can, and at the end of the day, if you don’t get the result you want, that’s very frustrating. But I don’t look back, I try to look forward ...”

Edwards wasn’t particularly placated by the AAA 400 performance, but he had finished 22nd, 36th, 17th, 19th and 19th in the previous five races.

“It was a decent fin-ish,” he said. “We didn’t deserve to finish that far forward, but we had some lucky breaks and my guys did a good job on pit road.

“We’ll go back and work on it and figure out what we were missing there, because it seemed like all of us (meaning Edwards and teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth) struggled a little bit.”
