TIDBITS® TAKES YOU TO SEE
DOCTORS, REAL & FICTIONAL
by Kathy Wolfe
For real-life ailments and for an amusing look at vintage TV and literature, this week, Tidbits takes you to the doctor.• In 1901, a German family named Deter
brought their 51-year-old female relative tosee Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a psychiatrist andneuropathologist.Mrs.Deterwasexperiencingshort-termmemorylossanddifficultyspeakingandunderstandingspeech.Dr.Alzheimerhadneverbeforeseensuchstrangesymptomsandworked closely with his patient for the nextfive years until her death. Convincing herfamily to donate her brain to his laboratory, he noted considerable shrinkage in the outer layer of her brain, and through the use of staining techniques, heidentifieddeadanddyingbraincells, plaque deposits, and tangles insidethe tissue. His research appeared in medicaljournals in1907, and thediseasewas taggedAlzheimer’sDiseasein1910.Thisdebilitatingcondition is now the seventh-leading cause of death,withanewcaseevery70seconds.
• Although we think of Frankenstein as themonsterof thehorrorfilmsof the1930s,Dr.Frankenstein was actually the creator of the monster.Hewasascientistwhoexperimentedwithpiecingtogetherassortedpartsofhumancorpses... turn the page for more!
Q: What did the doctor say to the invisible man?
A: I’m sorry, you’ll have to come back later.I can’t see you right now.

TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT
NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond
Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in
1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.
• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.
• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

• It was American actress and dancer Charlotte Greenwood who made the following sage observation: “Temperament is temper that is too old to spank.” • If you happen to own a Rolls Royce and want to swank it up a little bit, a mink jacket to fit the hood ornament is available for purchase. • San Francisco’s iconic cable cars are the only mobile national monument in the United States. • You might be surprised to learn that, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest swimming pool in the world isn’t found in one of the large industrialized nations as you might expect, but in the relatively small South American country of Chile. Built by a mega-resort on the ocean, the pool covers 20 acres, is more than 1,000 yards long and holds a whopping 66 million gallons of water. Construction took five years and cost more than $1.5 billion, and the estimated annual maintenance cost is more than $3 million.
• Those who study such things say that lightning travels at one-third the speed of light.
• American comedian and actor Jack Benny originally entered the family business of haberdashery. However, he was so bad at it that his own father fired him. • According to legend, it was shepherds in Ethiopia who first noticed the effects of caffeine. It seems that the goats they herded would become exceedingly frisky after eating the berries of the coffee plant.
• In order to come up with the cash to start Apple Computers, Stephen Wozniak sold his programmable calculator and Steve Jobs sold his Volkswagen microbus.
