There are certain records that you may be fa-miliar with. The fastest 100-meter dash, the top speed for a land vehicle and the first breaking of the sound barrier are just three common ex-amples. We may not all know who holds these records, but at least we know these records are out there. Then, of course, there are other re-cords that sit happily outside of the norm. Not only will almost no one know the names of these “famous” record holders, very few people will even be aware that these records exist. Here are a few examples of unusual bests from around the globe.

• Did you know that Chris Elliott and Tyson Turk of Bedford, Texas, hold the world record for the most body piercings in one session? Three thousand, one hundred piercings were performed in just over six hours, topping the previous best of 1,015 by a couple in the United Kingdom. (It seems some people aren’t happy with a nice pair of earrings anymore.)

Veteran ForeclosuresVeterans weren’t forgotten in the recent $25

billion mortgage servicing settlement. In fact, veterans were treated much better than civilian counterparts who’d had their homes foreclosed.In the lawsuit leading to the settlement, it was

determined that the four biggest mortgage servicers violated the Servicemen’s Civil Relief Act, the law that outlines the rules under which

mortgages must be handled for veterans. Those banks will now have to pay veterans

$116,785 each, plus equity that was lost in the property after it was wrongfully foreclosed, plus any interest. That number might end up

being higher.JP Morgan Chase will need to provide the

veteran with his or her property “free and clear of any debt or the cash equivalent of the full

value of the home at the time of sale.” Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Ally will have to

give a refund to any veterans charged more than 6 percent interest on a mortgage after receiving

a request to lower that rate, plus triple that amount.

The agreement expands and beefs up the rules for SCRA. Previously a bank was prohibited

from foreclosing on a veteran-owned property if the mortgage was taken out before the

veteran began military service. Now the rule will additionally state that no matter when the

mortgage began, if the veteran received Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay and was away from

home within nine months of foreclosure, the veteran is protected from foreclosure.If you believe you are covered by this

OFF THE RECORD (continued)• The record for “Most People Inside of a

Bubble” is held by Fan and Deni Yang. The two wowed an audience with their outlandish talent for creating bubbles. As part of this year’s BubbleFest in Santa Ana, California, at the city’s Discovery Science Center, they created a soap bubble so large that they were able to fit 118 people inside it, setting the current world record. The BubbleFest, now in its 16th year, celebrates the science and math principles of bubbles.

• For Takuo Toda, chairman of the Japan Origami Airplane Association, breaking the “Longest Paper Airplane Flight” record with his time of 27.9 seconds was the culmination of an 11-year scientific effort. In April of 2009, Toda finally reached his goal when he turned a sheet of light sugarcane into a 10-cm craft that stayed aloft for almost 30 seconds. Toda’s model bore a striking resemblance to a NASA space shuttle that he recalled watching three decades before, yet Toda claims that his design actually preceded NASA’s by three

or four years. In 1980, he began lobbying for a proposal to launch paper darts from the International Space Station, and in 2008, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced a three-year, 90 million yen (over 1.1 million U.S. dollars) study of that very thing. Though it may sound frivolous on its surface, the research could yield valuable information on how future spacecraft may be lighter and more aerodynamic. The next time your co-worker teases you for making paper airplanes, tell him you’re doing it for science!

• American Ashrita Furman presently holds 113 places of distinction within the “Guinness Book of World Records.” Nicknamed “Mr. Versatility,” Furman has set more than 340 records since 1979 in 35 countries on each of the world’s continents. In 2010, he sprinted his way into history with the aid of something generally reserved for the water — a pair of black and blue swim fins. He ran a mile (in fins) in 7 minutes, 56 seconds. In addition to breaking the “eight minute land swim fin mile” (a phrase that we are hoping to popularize), Furman’s accomplishment made him the

current record holder for holding current records (the aforementioned 113).

• Breaking the “World’s Fastest Furniture” record, a lounge chair created by a design group from the United Kingdom was clocked at 87 miles per hour, well over the speed limit on nearly every highway in the world. Couch potatoes with a need for speed need look no further than the “Casual Lofa” (as its creators Cummfy Banana have deemed it), which has an actual vehicle license with the British Ministry of Transportation. In addition to its plush, leopard-patterned upholstery, the “Lofa” features the same unleaded A-series engine found in the Cooper Mini, along with a steering wheel that doubles as a pizza pan, a hand-operated brake and a throttle that can be operated with the feet up or down. In addition to its performance-driving chair, the company has also built a bed on wheels called the “Street Sleeper” that can go 69 miles per hour and a zooming tub (the “Bog Standard”) that can go 71. They even offer a motorized office suite for the more business-minded racing aficionado.

Say it isn’t true. Seniors are moving to online banking?

So says a survey done by the American Bankers Association. For the first time ever, those of us age 55 and older now prefer doing our banking online rather than going to the bank in person or using the mail. It wasn’t just a few of us either. We went from 20 percent of seniors doing banking online in 2010 to a whopping 57 percent in 2011.

Part of this, it’s said, is due to the banks now having a long list of requirements to avoid the fees they now charge. In some cases we’re required to have a very large balance in savings or we’re charged a monthly fee to get statements by mail. Doing our banking online is often one of the ways we can save money.

Why do we do it? It’s convenient, especially if we no longer drive or if we live in places with inclement

weather. For those of us who are so busy it’s not easy to get to the bank during working hours, online banking is a means to easily take care of business.

That doesn’t mean we’re eager to use our cell phones to conduct bank business, however. We’re not quite there yet. Computer classes have made us more comfortable pressing keys, but a small cell phone is easily lost.

So, what can we do online? We can: transfer funds from one account to another, check balances, see if a check has cleared, view our statement and pay bills.

If you want to explore online banking, remember two key safety steps. Keep good virus protection on your computer, and close your browser after you log out of the bank’s website.

among us, there is one record potentially within our reach, “Most T-Shirts Worn At Once.” On May 22, 2010, Croatia’s Krunoslav Budiseli bested a former Swedish record holder by wearing 245 T-shirts at the same time. The feat took a little less than two hours to complete and ended with the Croatian wearing about 150 pounds (68 kg) worth of T-shirts. Budiseli said things started to become difficult around the 120th shirt, yet he somehow summoned the strength and force of will to don 125 more. Will May 22 live on forever in the annals of Croatian T-shirt achievement? Only time will tell.

• In the annals of “records least likely to exist,” the “Most Nights Spent In A Room Full of Scorpions” record would’ve been pretty close to the top, yet Kanchana Ketkaew of Thailand actually managed it. Ketkaew spent 33 days in the company of 5,320 live scorpions. The room, which was made of glass, was not much larger than a normal office room — about 10 feet wide by 12 feet long. Despite sharing cramped quarters with a swarm of unfriendly crawling roommates, Ketkaew emerged relatively unscathed, getting stung only about 13 times.

• After a day of exciting-yet-exhausting chair racing, you are bound to want a snack. How about a bite of the current record holder for “World’s Biggest Cookie,” which weighed in at 40,000 pounds? In 2003, the owners and employees of the Immaculate Baking Company converged to bake a cookie designed to satisfy even the largest of appetites. About a 100 feet in diameter, the cookie was so big that it had to be photographed from 100 feet above just to get it all on camera!

UNIVERSAL THEME PARKNestled in the San Fernando Valley, just over the hill from Hollywood, is one of Los Angeles’ great attractions, The Universal Theme Park. Though Disneyland has the more heralded history and gets a majority of the press, Universal has quietly carved out a place of magic and wonder for locals and visiting tourists since 1964. In fact, it is estimated that over 100 million men, women and children have since walked the Universal Grounds, making it one of the top tourist attractions in U.S. history.• The Universal back lot tour officially opened

to the public in 1964, although informal tours were available to the public before then. The first tours were walking tours, allowing visitors to get a look at productions filming on the studio lot. In addition to getting a glimpse of active sets, guests were given a look behind the scenes in the dressing rooms of their favorite Universal stars. These early tours lasted about 90 minutes.

• In the next decade, walking tours were replaced with more state-of-the-art transportation. A pink-and-white tram nicknamed the “GlamTram” became the preferred mode of transport. Onboard, a knowledgeable guide tells the studio’s rich history, shares bits of trivia and answers questions for curious visitors. Some lucky guests have even enjoyed face-to-face visits with the performers themselves, as on occasion stars have made themselves personally available to meet, sign autographs and answer questions. At the tour’s end, guests are given the opportunity to eat in the studio commissary, where star watching is just as important as whetting hardy appetites.

• In 1977, Universal began adding new attractions as both part of and separate from the back lot tour. These attractions included the Screen Test Comedy Theater, the Animal Actors stage, the Prop Plaza and the Western Stunt Show. Video screens were added to the tram, allowing visitors to watch productions on the lot being filmed live.

• The influence of Disneyland’s theme-ride-centric design emerged in the 1970s as the park added attractions inspired by some of the most successful movies filmed there, like “The Ten Commandments,” “Jaws” and “King Kong.” In the intervening three decades, a host of new attractions have been added. These include the Revenge of the Mummy thrill coaster, the Special Effects Stage, Jurassic Park – The Ride, Shrek 4-D, The Simpsons Animated Virtual Coaster and King Kong 360 3-D, a ride designed by film director Peter Jackson (“King Kong,” “The Lord of The Rings” trilogy) that the Los Angeles Times described as “the kind of awe-inspiring theme park attraction you can’t find anywhere else.”

• Today, guests can roam 415 acres of Universal Property including the lot, theme park and Universal City, a teaming outdoor plaza that includes restaurants, shops and one of California’s largest and most modern movie theaters. Though the studio lot tour now takes less than hour, visitors are advised to arrive early. Almost 100 years of cinematic history have been celebrated there, more than enough to captivate even the most casual movie buff for hours on end.

If you began receiving Social Security Disability Insurance payments in 2011, you could have a problem when you file your tax return and end up paying too much.Here’s why: Since it takes so long to begin receiving SSDI benefits, it’s possible that you’ll receive a one-time lump-sum payment that includes back payments for previous years. Those benefits are taxable income, and you could pay taxes at a rate up to a whopping 50 percent. The calculation to determine your income includes any other income you have.According to a news release by the Allsup Disability Life Planning Center, an average SSDI benefit is $1,073, which comes to $12,876 for the year. For a couple, a total income of more than $19,000 (or $9,950 for an individual) requires that a tax return be filed.However, if you receive a large lump-sum payment and report that, as well as any other income, you could end up paying too much in taxes.This is where you’ll need the help of a tax preparer or tax preparation software to complete your return: You’re allowed to spread that lump-sum income out over previous years.You’ll receive a Form 1099 showing the amount of SSDI income you received, with the amount showing in Box 3.If you want to complete your return yourself or read about filing to get an estimate of the tax you might owe, go online to the Internal

Revenue Service website at irs.gov and search for Publication 915. The name is “Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits.” Look for the Lump-Sum Election on page 11 for detailed instructions on the Worksheets 1 through 4 that need to be filled out. Scroll down and look for the examples of the worksheets. The result of the calculations on those worksheets determine which election method will get you the lowest tax.Publication 915 contains other helpful information as well. If you receive a FORM SSA-1042S Social Security Benefit Statement and don’t understand the numbers in the various boxes, the publication explains each one.If you receive railroad retirement benefits on FORM RRB-1099, this publication explains the figures in each of the 11 boxes.If you do your taxes yourself and have a question, you can contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Your best bet, however, if you’ve received a lump-sum benefit, is to get help from a tax preparer.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 8-year-old longhaired cat, “Buster,” has gas and diarrhea. He was given Flagyl for two months with no improvement. Then he took three months of probiotics, and no improvement. Now he gets 5 mg of prednisone and 5 drops of Rescue Remedy daily. His butt has been shaved to help keep him clean, and I wash it once a day. Buster eats special cat food, but that doesn’t help his digestion either. We have quarter-sized circles of poop all over the house, and I am breaking my back cleaning the carpet and floor. My husband says to euthanize him. What more can I do? -- Pat R., via email

DEAR PAT: Such long-term diarrhea is certainly cause for concern, and I know it can be intensely frustrating to care for and clean up after a sick cat. Please convince your husband to shelve the euthanasia suggestion, however.Buster sounds like he has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-- a term that describes a collection of symptoms, such as frequent (or constant) diarrhea, but not a specific cause.

Flagyl is a common treatment for IBD, as is prednisone. Rescue Remedy is a natural remedy to calm pets. Buster’s vet should run a number of tests, if he or she hasn’t already, to rule out bacterial infection, parasites or a metabolic condition. If a conclusive cause isn’t found, you must try and find ways to mitigate his symptoms.The change in diet also is recommended in case a food allergy is the problem. Monday NightDAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

— The no-frills Daytona 500 got off to a colorful start on Monday night, mainly because the dude with his hands on the plunger set off the fireworks early.

On the start, Matt Kenseth bump-drafted Greg Biffle while everyone else played nice ... for slightly more than a lap. The bump draft worked out nicely. Behind the streaking Fords at the front caromed the five-time champion, the previous winner, the banished bad boy and ... The Danica.

Contact between Elliott Sadler’s plebeian Chevy and Jimmie Johnson’s royal one touched off the bottle rock-ets. The last time a driver began a championship sea-son with a 500 victory was Johnson in 2006. Since then he has finished no better than 27th.

Next up for the winner of five of the past six titles: He and crew chief Chad Knaus try to duck the book being hurled at them by the always arbitrary NASCAR judiciary.

“I’m really bummed out,” said Johnson, and he wasn’t insincere. He said he had some “help” from behind,

which is an odd way for destruction to be described. Johnson still earned $327,000 dollars, or about $163,000 per lap.

Lots of times, rained-out races seem restrained when everyone comes back and

reconjures the magic. In par-ticular, it’s usually later than the second lap when some-one touches off a brawl of sparks and fire. Rain appar-ently isn’t calming when it’s the Daytona 500 and first place is worth $1.5 million or so.

Eleven laps later Ryan Newman went spinning down the back straight, but he had a signed excuse because a tire went flat.

Then there’s Danica Pat-rick, who, as usual, got more attention than Tony Stew-

art, Lenny Kravitz and Mitt Romney combined. She won a Nationwide Series pole, but otherwise com-peted in three races — two major-league and one minor — and wrecked a league-leading 1.000.

It will undoubtedly get bet-ter, in large measure because it is impossible for it not to.

It seemed like yesterday when Trevor Bayne won the race, but this time Bayne barely made it a lap. The Kurt Busch Resurrection Tour went on immediate hiatus.

It’s one of the reasons NASCAR insists on having 43 cars in every race. Some-times the big shots charge the barricades too quickly and reinforcements are nec-essary.
