If you’re completely fed up with carols and mistletoe, don’t feel alone. And there are several different places you can visit to get away from it all. Most American movie theaters are open on Christmas Day, as are several amusement parks, including Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Most hotels (along with their eateries) are also open, along with some major restaurant chains like Waffle House. • Real tree or artificial? If you’re concerned about the environment, you should know that either choice will leave a “carbon footprint.” Artificial trees are made of non-renewable materials, most often imported from China. Real trees require petroleum for transport (and also to grind them into mulch once they’re discarded). So it’s easier to base your decision on family tradition … and how much you enjoy sweeping up needles. •Candles are an easy and inexpensive way to add a holiday touch to your home. Better yet, red candles can also be used for decorating on Valentine’s Day and the Fourth of July, so you might want to stock up on them during the post-holiday sales. Scented candles can make your house smell like you’ve been baking treats all day, even if your Christmas cookies come from a grocery-store bag. •Unwrapping gifts may be difficult for those on both ends of the age spectrum – very young children and the elderly. Use a minimal amount of adhesive tape on their packages, and use a stick-on bow instead of tying a ribbon. A gift for a sight-impaired person will mean more when it’s wrapped using interesting textures like velvet ribbons and crinkly paper. You could also tie a few tiny jingle bells to the package as a nice touch. Authorized Dealer 501 N. •Christmas trees are irresistible to most house cats. Ifone or more kitties reside with you, it’s a good idea toput your most valuable or fragile ornaments near thetop of the tree, where they’re less likely to be battedaround and broken. Consider securing them to thebranches with garbage bag twist ties for extra insurance. And here’s a great tip: Most felines don’t like the smell ofcitrus or peppermint, so spraying one of those aromas at the base of the treemight be enough to encourage Fluffy to keep her distance.

•Craft projects are a great way to keep children busy while you’re makingother preparations. Visit a dollar store to purchase some inexpensive artsupplies – construction paper, pipe cleaners, ribbon, colored pens, glitter andsuch. Set the kids up with safety scissors, tape and glue. Encourage theyoungsters to make their own holiday decorations, and then watch them beamafter you’ve prominently displayed their completed “masterpieces.”

•Buying a Christmas gift for your boss can be tricky. Gag gifts are definitelytaboo. A “funny” gift that’s taken in the wrong context could createunnecessary friction on-the-job. Don’t feel obligated to spend a lot, either; yourboss knows that he or she makes more than you do. A heartfelt note inside acard may go a long way. You can always enclose something small in theenvelope … like movie theater tickets or a bookstore gift card.

•A gift-wrapping party might liven up the tedious task of wrapping all thosepresents you’ve purchased. Invite friends to bring their own gifts, providesome snacks and maybe a rented movie, and spread out the scissors and tape.Suggest that partygoers wrap the largest boxes first and then work their waythrough the stack. Keep sticky notes handy to help identify each package.

•Are you looking for the “perfect” gift for your child’s teacher? Steer clear ofcoffee mugs and desk sets! Surveys have revealed that the gift teacherstreasure most is a personal letter from a student’s parents. A note describing aninstance when your child shared something that he or she learned in school? That’s perfect. Such a letter may be cherished for years to come. Teachersconfess that such letters provide a real “lift” during those inevitable days ofpure frustration.

Dental Insurance:Worth It or Not?

As you do your annual financial review, consider ifyou might save money by signing up for dentalinsurance.Begin by asking your dentist what plans he or sheaccepts, and check that plan's list of benefits. Ifyou're prone to cavities and often need fillings, besure there isn't a limit on how many you can get, oron how many visits are covered in a year. Check forinformation on composite fillings (tooth-colored)versus amalgam (metal-colored). Read the fine printfor pre-existing conditions as well. It can be hard todetermine just when a cavity actually began, andyour claim could be denied. Check to see if thedeductible is waived in case of an accident. Some companies allow the dentist to bill directly, and the dentist agrees to accept the plan amount aspayment in full. Some pay the dentist directly butyou'll end up paying a portion of the bill. Othersrequire you to pay the dentist, send in your receiptsand wait for reimbursement. In some cases, you'llmake a co-payment; in others, a flat payment pervisit.Look at the policy limitations, too, especially anywaiting period. If dentures are in your immediate

$&¢ Dollars and

SenseBY David Uffington

future, be sure the policy will cover them in the first year. The same with oral surgery. Generally, if you need oralsurgery, you need it now to take care of an immediateproblem. If you've selected a plan and are about to start lookingfor a new dentist, check the insurance company's Website and pull up a list of dentists by ZIP code to seewhich ones participate. Dental insurance companies willpay more to a participating dentist than they will to onethat doesn't.Be sure to do the math. If a policy costs you $40 permonth, has a $100 deductible and a yearly maximum of$1,000, you've actually paid out $580. Compare thatwith your actual dental care costs. Many plans take effect the first day of the monthfollowing your application and initial payment.Deductibles and annual maximums generally runthrough a calendar year. If you select and pay for a plannow, it will take effect the first of the year.

The megalodon'shuge jaws could clamp down on its preywith a force of 12 to 20 tons. Thought for the Day: "Journalism is publishingwhat someone doesn't want us to know, therest is propaganda." -- Horacio Verbitsky

The pace of myday is starting alittle sooner than

I had intended. It's fouro'clock in the morning,and I can't sleep, so I

decide to put a pot roast in the slow cooker.A note from my son falls out of the cookbook I pulled froma shelf."Dear Mom, I love you.You are the best mother ever.Thank you for staying home and taking care of me allthese years."I was smart enough to pencil "age eight" on the back ofthe paper. I suppose I tucked it in my cookbook, knowing Iwould see it as I opened the book to plan and preparemeals for this family of mine. But it had been a whilesince I'd used this particular cookbook, and findingthe note felt like opening a Christmas present.I want to run upstairs to my son's bedroom andcover his 13-year-old face with kisses, a gesturethat would certainly get the response, "Gross,Mom."So I decide to hold off, at least until he comesdown for breakfast in two hours. It's little moments like these that make me proudthat I'm a mother. Proud of the decisions I've madeto make this family my treasure."For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,"Jesus said.

We make our children our treasures when we listen totheir stories, bandage their wounds, dispense medicine inthe middle of the night, put endless miles on our cars toand from activities, instruct, discipline, cry with, cheer on,pray for, understand, engage in conversation, cook andclean for (teach them to cook and clean for themselves),and then point them toward their future. I did this as astay-home mom for years and continue to do so as a momwho now works fulltime away from home. The thing about motherhood, though, is that not every dayis a warm fuzzy photo opportunity or acknowledgment fora job well done. You can bet I've had days, just like you, when I've thought, "What the heck was I thinking?"I'm reminded of a quote by Dr. James Dobson, a Christianpsychologist, who said: "Raising children is not unlike along-distance race in which the contestants must learnto pace themselves. That is the secret to winning."We still have a few years in our parenting race, afew more years with these treasures under thesame roof.I slip my son's note to me back between thepages. I'll visit it again someday as I'm trying todecide between making Sunday Dinner Pot Roastor Cornbread Dressing or maybe just when I needto revisit a "thank you" for investing my heart.

It's the last week of 2008, and the news at the moment is fleeting, asfar as filming goes. However, there is a remake of "The Crazies" onschedule. This about the inhabitants of a small Kansas town beset by

death and insanity when a plane crashes and lets loose a secret biologi-cal weapon in the water supply. Only casting as of now is TimothyOlyphant as the town sheriff. So, let's look back at some of the great films of the past. In his book "I'llHave What She's Having," author Daniel Kimmel says, "It's hard to see'The Philadelphia Story' today as audiences back in the '40's would haveseen it. It was a smash hit, running six weeks to sold-out houses at RadioCity Music Hall. Leaving only because the theater was committed to apremiere of 'Rebecca.' It marked

the return of Katharine Hepburn, whose career was on thedownslide, and also starredJimmy Stewart."Of "Pillow Talk" he says: "In1959, 'Pillow Talk,' starringRock Hudson and DorisDay, produced by RossHunter, was one of thebiggest hits of the year.Audiences simply adoredthe chemistry betweenHudson and Day, and itrevived Doris' career, which had been on thewane." He also saysthat "at that time, the

fact that Hudson was gaywas very hush-hush."

"When Harry Met Sally," starring MegRyan and Billy Crystal, was a tremendous hit,

surging both Ryan and Crystal to top stardom. But did you know that therole of Sally was originally set to go to Elizabeth McGovern, whom pro-ducer Rob Reiner had been dating? When their relationship broke up, sodid his idea of casting her in the role. Another find who surged to star-dom was Harry Connick Jr. Reiner was told about this young musician. He listened and was pleased with his arrangements, and he was signedon. Connick's "Our Love Is Here to Stay," "But Not For Me" and "ICould Write a Book" brought him a wider audience. The soundtrackwent platinum, and Harry Jr. won his first Grammy for his vocal per-formance."It Happened One Night," starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, isone of the most beloved pictures of all time. Amazing how this onecame about. Gable was on loan from Metro to Columbia and didn't likethe idea. When he arrived at Columbia, he reportedly was drunk. But hetook the script home and read it, and word is he liked it. The female rolewas not a glamorous one. She wears only one outfit throughout thewhole film, and it was rejected by Margaret Sullivan, Constance Ben-nett, Miriam Hopkins and Myrna Loy. Finally Colbert said "yes," andthe rest is history.

•The leftover cardboard tube from aroll of paper towels can make a funcontainer for a “grab bag” gift. For ayoung girl, you could fill the tubewith hair do-dads, lip glosses, andglitter pens. For a young boy, it couldbe toy cars, candy bars, and ballgametickets. Pack the very ends with tissuepaper, and then gift-wrap the tube.Twist each end and tie them off witha piece of ribbon. The end result is acolorful bundle of fun that looks likea large party popper.

•What rules govern gratuity gifts youmight give to service workers(hairdressers, babysitters, garbagecollectors, paper deliverers, and soon)? Well, the first rule is that such“tips” are not mandatory. If you dofeel that a serviceperson has beenparticularly helpful and you’d like tospread some holiday cheer, it’s bestto enclose the tip in an envelope orcard. Postal carriers are not allowedto accept cash, but they may receivegifts valued at $20 or less. A gift cardto a local grocery store or gas stationis a great idea, as it can be stored inthe mail sack while the workercontinues on his or her route.

•If you’re flying commercially to visitrelatives for the holiday, you’ll save

time by not wrapping the presentsyou’re taking. You’ll likely be forcedto rip them open at a securitycheckpoint, and will end uprewrapping them anyway. Use clearplastic bags to pack as many of yourcarry-on supplies as possible; this willspeed up security searches. And allowyourself plenty of extra time to get tothe airport, since traffic will be heavierand parking lots may be overflowing.

•Your office Christmas party mayseem like a fun, informal occasion, but do your best to be on your“work” behavior. Don’t overindulgein alcohol, don’t tell your bossesexactly what you think of them, don’tdance on the desks, and don’tphotocopy your backside. And pleasekeep the holiday kisses betweenco-workers chaste, no matter howmuch mistletoe is strung around theroom!

•You can recycle “used” holidaycards by cutting off the colorfulfronts and using them as postcards.Or cut the images into decorativeshapes and use them as custom gifttags. Check with local early-gradeschools; many of them love to re-useold Christmas cards to devise craftprojects for their classes.

The Year in Review

What was the main, overriding significance of the2008 NASCAR season? It had already been established that the team ofJimmie Johnson and his crew chief, Chad Knaus, was the sport's best. Now that Johnson has won three consecutivechampionships, it's fair to declare that Johnson, not just his team, is the best in the business.Johnson wasn't clearly superior to everyone else.

Two drivers, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch, wonmore races. In the Chase -- i.e., what matters --Johnson has proved unbeatable. His utter masteryof the format is something no one else hasachieved. Almost from the moment he appearedin what is now Sprint Cup, Johnson's statistics

have far exceeded anyone else's.It wasn't a big year for parity. The three driversmentioned above combined to win two-thirds ofthe races. Busch won more than 30 percent of the26 regular-season races. Only 12 drivers wonraces, four fewer than 2007 and three less than2006 and '05.The new car -- once known as the Car ofTomorrow, or COT -- generally produced qualityraces on restrictor-plate tracks (Daytona andTalladega), road courses (Sonoma and WatkinsGlen) and short tracks (Bristol, Martinsville and

Richmond). At the end of its first year of fullimplementation, the COT is still a problem on theintermediate tracks where, unfortunately, themajority of the races are run. This was also the year NASCAR's optimism wastempered by economic reality. Attendance and

television ratings were falling off. Most ofNASCAR's leadership has never dealt with hardtimes before. How they adapt is an importantissue to be watched. What was better? Competition among themanufacturers, for one. Chevrolet won the formalcompetition, but the victory totals -- Chevy 11,Ford 11, Toyota 10, Dodge 4 -- reflected parity, inno small part due to the fact that the cars are nowvirtually identical.

Some Fibroids Need No TreatmentDEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 37, have two children andalso have fibroids. My periods are quite heavy. My doctorsays that removal of the uterus is the best way to end myproblem. My husband and I would like to have morechildren. What other options do I have? --P.S.

ANSWER: The uterus is a large, hollow muscle with aninternal layer that grows every month in preparation for thereception of a fertilized egg. Fibroids are noncancerousgrowths of the uterine muscle. They're common, and formost women they cause few, if any, symptoms. Largefibroids can compress the bladder and provoke frequenturination. Or they can press on the colon and bring onconstipation. They sometimes reduce the chances ofpregnancy. They can be responsible for heavy menstrualbleeding.Their cause hasn't been discovered, but female hormonesmust be involved in their appearance, because they tend toregress with menopause. If they're not producing symptoms, they can be ignored. Ifthey are kicking up a fuss, hysterectomy -- removal of theuterus -- is one solution, but not the only one. Optionsdepend on what the woman wants. For a woman approaching menopause, the medicineLupron is a good choice. It suppresses estrogenproduction, which shrinks fibroids. Since this has a timelimit on use, women who will soon be menopausal are theones who can take advantage of it.

Danazol (a synthetic male hormone), birth-control pills andDepo-Provera control excessive menstrual bleeding due tofibroids.Sometimes doctors can remove a fibroid with a scope thatenters the uterus through the vagina without any externalcutting.Uterine artery embolization is a procedure where thedoctor threads a soft tube (a catheter) to the artery feedingthe fibroid. When the right position is reached, the doctorreleases particles that obstruct the artery and cut off bloodsupply to the fibroid. It falls off.MRgFUS, magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound,is a new technique employing sound waves to heat thefibroid and shrink it. It can interfere with subsequentpregnancies, however. The booklet on fibroids explains these growths in detail. Toorder a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1106W, Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check ormoney order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with therecipient's printed name and address. Please allow fourweeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE:Will you please tell me whatcauses hand-foot-and-mouth disease? What can be doneto prevent kids from getting it? -- A worried grandmother offour grandchildren

ANSWER: Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a viral illnessmost often occurring in children younger than 10. Thevirus's name is coxsackie virus, from the name of the NewYork city where it was first found. It causes tiny blisters onthe tongue, in the throat and on the palate, gums and lips. The blisters break to form shallow sores. The hands, fingers, feet and groin can also break out. The illnesspeaks in summer or early fall. It's usually a mild illnessthat's over in one week. There is no prevention for it, andthere is no medicine for it.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible.Readers may write him or request an order form of availablehealth newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
