A Difficult ChallengeBy R. Addy

You want to purchase a hunting knife, but you don’t know what kind to buy. Buying the wrong knife could ruin a perfectly good hunting experience, so before you go knife shopping, you need to ask yourself a few questions. What type of hunting will you be doing? Will you be going after large or small animals? Do you want a knife you can use when you’re not hunting? Answering these questions will help you choose the knife that is right for you.

There are two basic styles of knives: fixed blade and folding. On a fixed blade knife, the blade is fixed in the open position permanently. For safety, the knife comes with a sheath. A folding knife has a pivot point and lock mechanism that allows the blade to close at the handle. The knife is good for the occasional hunter, works well for everyday use and is easier to carry and store. However, it is not as strong as a fixed blade knife.

There are two types of blade styles: the drop point and clip point. The curved design of the drop point makes it ideal for skinning larger animals with little damage to the meat. It can also be used for gutting and splitting the rib cage and pelvis if you don’t have access to a hatchet or saw. The clip point has a thinner blade and a more defined point. With a flatter blade, the clip point can be used as a general work knife. For an occasional hunter, the clip point will work fine, as it will do some or all of the tasks a drop point will, just not as effectively.

Blade design is important, but what about the handle? Classic handles such as wood, leather and bone are nice to look at and are functional. However, newer materials such as rubber and other composite materials give hunters more control in adverse conditions, which means added safety.

You’ve bought your hunting knife and are ready to go, but to make your knife last, you need to know how to care for it properly. Remember, your knife was designed for a specific purpose. Using it as an axe or a screwdriver could damage the blade beyond repair and void your warranty.

Clean your knife after using it. Even on stainless steel blades, the acid from your fingers can cause rust. Wash your blade by hand with soap and water and dry it immediately with a soft cloth. To remove stains, use a clean wine cork and a mixture of salt and vinegar. Apply light pressure when

cleaning so you don’t mark the blade. Wash immediately with soap and water and dry with a soft cloth.

To prevent rust, regularly oil the blade and lock mecha-nism if you have a folding knife. Use general all-purpose household oil or the same oil used for firearms. Don’t over oil-it will attract and hold dirt. Don’t get oil on the handle either. Use linseed oil on a wooden handle and a good leather treatment on a leather handle. A knife with a rubber or synthetic handle doesn’t really need treated, but if you think it needs cleaned, use Armor All. Just make sure to wipe off your knife before you use it, as it could be slippery.

When it comes time to sharpen your knife, you can do it yourself or have it done professionally. If you plan on doing it yourself, practice on an old knife first in order to maintain the correct angle. Never use a bench grinder or power sander. They produce too much heat and could remove the temper of the steel and weaken the blade.

When Couple Splits, Who Gets the Pets?DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My boyfriend and I called it quits last month after six

years together. While we lived together we adopted two beautiful dogs, "Gelly" and "Robie." We both love the dogs but aren't sure what to do. He wants to keep them, and so do I. Any suggestions? -- Janice H., Providence, R.I.

DEAR JANICE: Pets are so much a part of our families these days that when a relationship breaks down, custody of those pets can cause as much acrimony as a struggle for custody of children. To many people, pets are their children. So settling on who gets the dogs can be a difficult process.

Even if you can't cooperate on anything else, strive to cooperate on creating a plan for both of you to spend time with the dogs. I have friends who have set up visitation rules for their pets -- one person gets the pets for a week, the other person gets them for another week. Another ex-couple decided after several months of sharing that one would keep their three dogs all the time and the other would visit each weekend.

In a breakup, pets can suffer quite a bit of stress. The dynamics of the house-hold have changed, patterns of their humans' behavior have changed, and one human isn't around anymore. This alone can cause noticeable behavioral changes in your dogs, so pay close attention to them. Gelly or Robie may seem more ac-tive or hyperactive, or eat less and not be as active. Both you and your ex need to give them plenty of encouragement and love during this time.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. If your question or comment is printed in the weekly column, you'll receive a free copy of "Fighting Fleas," the newest booklet from Paws Corner!

• It was 20th-century American author and actress Cornelia Otis Skinner who made the following sage observation: "One learns in life to keep silent and draw one's own confusions."

• If you grew up during a certain era in the United States, you are probably familiar with the board game Parcheesi. If you have a particularly good memory, you may recall that the game's subtitle is "The Royal Game of India." You may not realize, though, that

by Samantha Weaver

the game is so-called because royalty in India used to play a life-size version of the game in gardens specially designed for the pursuit. Centuries ago, rajas would dress members of their harems in brightly colored costumes and use them as game pieces.

• Everyone knows that a sophomore is someone in his or her second year of high school or college. Most people don't realize, though, that the word is derived from the Greek words "sophos," which means "wise," and "moros," which means "stupid."
