•When preparing outdoor furniture forwinter storage, it’s important to give it a good cleaning. If you have a truck, why not load it up and take it to the local self-serve car wash? The specialized brushes make it easy to clean right there in the back of the vehicle, and a pressure rinse gets soap and dirt from all the nooks and crannies. -- JoAnn • “While at a backyard barbecue nowthat the weather has turned nice out (down in the South, anyway), I learned this trick from a neighbor. Put hot dogs in the slow cooker. Don’t add water or anything. They taste really good without taking up space on the grill.” -- J.V. in Alabama • To keep algae from growing in yourbackyard birdbath, add a few copper pennies. Or you can get a small piece of copper pipe from the home-improvement store. It keeps the algae from getting out of control. •Whenyouneedanextragarbagebag, like during a party or while doing lawn chores, try this cool trick: Use a large pop-up laundry bin, and line it with a lawn-and-leaf garbage bag. Use chip clips to secure it at the top if you need to. • “We keep a regular-size galvanizedsteel trash can with lid out on our deck for the kids’ toys. It’s big enough to hold everything, convenient enough to drag around the yard to clean up, and the lid protects the toys from the weatherandbugs!”--W.K.inIllinois •“Ihadaplasticstoragebinthatcracked, and I was about to throw it out when my son stopped me. He cut holes in either side and used it to cover the outdoor pipes that stick up out of the ground. Now they will be protected from cold temperatures, and from the weed eater throughtherestoffall.Myboy!”--T.R.inSouthCarolinaSendyourtipstoNowHere’saTip,c/oKingFeaturesWeeklyService,P.O.Box536475,Orlando,FL32853-

Z-Z-Z’S (continued): •Sleepdeprivationhasnumerousnega-tive effects on the body’s functions and well-being. A recent Harvard study has tied insuf-ficientorirregularsleeptoanincreasedriskforcolon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease in those who slept less than six hours a night. A shortage of sleep can put the body into a state of “high alert,” which can drive up blood pres-sure, putting a person at risk for heart attack and stroke. Just one extra hour a night can decrease your heart attack risk by 33%.And considerwhat that extra sleep will do for your family, so-cial, and work relationships when you are less irritable, impatient, anxious, and depressed! •Lackofsufficientsleepcanevenleadto obesity! The hormones leptin and ghrelin are instrumental in controlling feelings of hunger and fullness. Inadequate sleep can increase pro-duction of ghrelin, which stimulates the appe-tite, raising the sensation of hunger by as much as25%.Leptinsignalsthebrainwhenthebodyis full, but not enough shut-eye drives leptin levels down. Combine these two and it’s a reci-pe for obesity. •Evenanincreaseinwrinklescanoccurwhen you don’t get enough rest. Your body re-leases extra cortisol, the “stress hormone” when you don’t get enough rest. Cortisol breaks down the skin’s collagen, that substance that main-tains skin’s elasticity. •It’salittlealarmingtoknowthat23%of commercial airline pilots admit that sleep de-privation affects their performance at least once aweek.One-fifthof thosesurveyeddisclosedthat they have made serious mistakes as a re-sult.Fourteenpercentoftruckdriversconfessa“near miss” due to lack of sleep, while 44% of them say they never or rarely get enough sleep on work nights.

Z-Z-Z’S (continued): •Stayingawake for just17hours leadsto decreased performance equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.05%. No sleep for 21 hours is comparable to 0.08% blood alcohol content. •Howdoyouknowifyou’resleepdeprived?Asuresignisifittakesyoulessthanfiveminutestofall asleep at night. The optimum amount of time is between 10 and 15 minutes. Other symptoms include irritability, nervousness, and inability to tolerate stress, and problems with concentration and memory. You might also notice blurred vi-sion, hand tremors, or a change in appetite. • We each have an internal “masterclock” in our brains that coordinates the rhythm of our body’s functions. Known as the “circa-dian clock,” it is affected by external environ-mental factors, with light as the main factor influencing our 24-hour circadian cycle.Theserhythmsinfluenceoursleepcycles,hormonere-lease, and body temperature, and function best with a normal light-dark cycle. This master clock controls the productions of the hormone mela-tonin,theonethatmakesussleepy.Whenthereis less light, the clock tells the brain to produce moremelatonin, resulting indrowsiness.Whena person’s work hours are scheduled during the normalsleepperiod,it’sdifficulttostayawake, but it can also be a health risk. It’s believed that melatoninprotectsthebodyagainstcancer.Forthose who are exposed to light at night, mela-tonin levels are reduced, and researchers believe those people are more prone to colon and breast cancer. •Studiesindicatethattheriskofcardio-vascular disease declines significantly when aperson regularly sleeps seven hours a night.

Tidbits® of Dallas County Page 4 Tidbits® of CDA www.tidbitscda.com Page 4Z-Z-Z’S (continued): • It’s estimated that sleeplessness con-tributes to one in six fatal highway accidents. It seems that men are more likely than women to drive while drowsy and twice as likely as women to fall asleep while driving. Also related to gen-der, women need about an hour more sleep per night, yet are twice as likely to have insomnia. Unfortunately, the loss of that hour, coupled with stress level, biological stages, and responsibili-ties makes them more prone to depression. • A lackof sleepdecreases your attention andconcentration and inhibits the cementing of memories, so that you cannot remember what youlearnfromdaytoday.Ascientificstudyhasdeterminedthata60to90minutenapcanbeasbeneficial as a full night’s sleep for learning anew skill. A “power nap” can improve alertness, creativity, productivity, motor skills, and accu-racy, as well as reduce stress and risk of heart attack, and aid in weight loss. •Whataboutthosefolkswhoneverseemto need an alarm clock to wake up in the morn-ing? These individuals are awakened by the re-lease of a stress hormone called adrencorticotro-phin as they unconsciously anticipate the stress of waking up. • Ifyou’reoneof thosewhokicksandpunches while asleep, you are more susceptible toneurologicaldisease.Expertssaythat“violentsleepers” have a 50% chance of developing Par-kinson’s Disease or dementia and should consult a neurologist to diagnose the problem. • If you think that drinking coffeewillhelp you stay awake, consider that those folks who drink four or more caffeinated beverages on a daily basis have a higher risk for sleep apnea.

Don’t wait for the holiday weight. The leaves have turned color, the days are shorter, and the holidays are upon us again. It is now estimated, the average American adult gains up to 11 pounds of fat between Halloween and New Year’s. Some reports say that adults gain 5 pounds from Thanksgiving to Christmas. TheNewEnglandJournalofMedicinereportedthat even just 1 pound gained over the holidays is disconcerting.Mostpeoplenevertakeoffeventhat 1 extra pound gained during the holidays. Nonetheless, the process begins all over again with the notorious “New Year’s Resolution.”How many people attempt to lose the holiday weight, only to fail? It is estimated that near-ly half of adults make a New Years resolution. After 6months, only 46% have fulfilled thesecommitments. John’s Hopkins research has also shown that 98% of all diets fail in one year, and the average American gains 15 pounds of fat each decade. This validates that our chances at success are bleak. Realistically, most of us procrastinate, don’t get motivated, or get Christmas credit card debt paid off before starting an exercise and weight loss program in the New Year. So, it is safe to assume that the average person would need3-6monthstogetridoftheextraholidayweight. The result is that summer is almost on top of us before we get caught up from the holi-days. One of my favorite quotes describes the definition of insanity, “Doing the same thingover and over again, but expecting a different result.” After nearly 20 years in the business, I can’t tell you how many times I have seen this endless cycle take place. Forthosewhowantsomethingdifferentthis year, use the next 8 weeks to start or recom-mit to an exercise and diet plan. Get a support person or group that can help you stay focused during the last part of this year, when cocktail partiesandfamilygatheringsareaplenty.Fin-ish the holidays 8-15 pounds lighter than you are now.Evenifyoudogainsomeholidayweight, you are at least the same at the start of the New Yearandreallyhaveabetterchancegetfit forthe summer of 2012. Often, I have seen many people, including myself, who have started drop-ping body fat, feeling better, and decide that eat-ing too much and splurging during the holidays just isn’tworth it. Afteronly7daysofeatinghealthier, your stomach adjusts to smaller por-tions. You just don’t feel good eating poorly and excessively. I really like the saying, “Noth-ing tastes as good as lean feels.” Remember,Thanksgiving is a “day”, not a “week.” Time is like a toilet paper roll, the closer you get to the end, the quicker it goes. The New Year will be here very soon. I challenge you to get startedimmediately.WhenJanuaryarrives, youwill look and feel better and you will be better off next year.

Q: Should I let my cat/dog have a litter before she is spayed?A: Unless you are a professional responsible breeder, there’s no reason for a female cat or dog to have even one litter. It won’t make her a better companion, and it will increase the likelihood that she will develop mammary cancer. Leash Laws Are Sometimes VagueDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in ref-erence to your recent column about training a Òcool city pooch.Ó You’re forgetting that many cities have laws about tying up your dog to lamp-posts. Unless that Òcool pooch’sÓ owner wants topayafine,he’dbetterforgetaboutdoingthat.-- S.Y., via e-mail

DEAR S.Y.: That’s a good point: Pet ownersshould check city ordinances ahead of time be-fore taking their pets out on a stroll. Are pets completely not allowed inside businesses by city law, rather than at the business owner’s discre-tion? Can you tie their leash to a lamppost, bike stand or outdoor table? Can a dog be unaccom-panied or off leash at any time? As a counterpoint, many cities’ leash laws are sometimes a bit vague on this point. Almost all require that owners keep their dogs under control at all times, and on a leash everywhere exceptindesignatedoff-leashareas.Municipalbuildings and schools are usually off-limits to non-service dogs, period. Some cities, and an increasing number of businesses, are making more allowances for dogs. For example, some grocery stores and afew department stores in my area, like Home Depot, allow small dogs inside as long as they stay on a leash beside their owner and are well-behaved. However, it is up to the pet owner to learn what the rules are in the businesses he or she wants to frequent. The most important point, beyond what’s written in leash laws or by businesses, is that pet owners be good citizens, and make sure their dog is safe and under their control when out and about.

VA Gobbledygook ThetitleofthereportbytheOfficeoftheInspector General sounded interesting: Audit of Non-PurchaseCardMicro-Purchases.Thefirstthing I learned was that “micro” doesn’t neces-sarily mean small. A micro-purchase in the Department of VeteransAffairsisonethatislessthan$3,000.Last year, the Veterans HealthAdministrationspent $3 billion onmicro-purchases.Non-pur-chase cards were used, and those cards earn rebates. The audit was to learn if the Veterans HealthAdministrationcouldincreaseefficiencyand cost effectiveness with the non-purchase cards. WhattheOIGconcludedwasthatmedi-cal facilities could have saved $20 million by usingnon-purchasecards.Outof729,000non-purchase card purchases, theymissed 279,000chances(38percent)togetarebate.Thatwouldhavecometo$4millionandcouldzoomto$133millionoverthenextfiveyears. The OIG’s recommendation is that the VA Office of Management “establish policiesand procedures” to increase the use of non-pur-chase card micro-purchases. There were reasons for the non-use of the cards, the OIG says: use of vendors who didn’t take purchase cards, payments to veterans for tort claims and pharmacy co-payments. It’s possible, however, that the reason the non-purchase cards weren’t used can be found in the manual on the use of those cards. It says the spendinglimitis$3,000--exceptfor“acquisi-tions of construction,” which has a $2,000 lim-it. Or how about “acquisitions of services subject to the Service Contract Act,” which has a $2,500 limit. Or how about those purchases “es-tablishedbyFAR2.101,”whichhasa$150,000limit. What follows in the manual are many, manypagesofdetailsaboutthespecificsofcarduse and the penalties for abuse. Just Say ‘No’ Nearly every senior I know has less free time in retirement than he or she thought they would. A big reason is that others assumed the new retiree would have loads of free time and wouldthereforebewillingandableto...(fillinthe blank). In other words, the so-called free time quickly vanished under the requests of others. A recent study compared quality of life with the amount of free time available to a retir-ee. It was originally assumed that more free time meant a better quality of life. Not so, research-ers said. Instead, the management of the time we do have leads to a better quality of life. The researchers went so far as to suggest that seniors be taught time-management techniques. I don’t know if that’s really necessary, do you?Wespentthefirstpartofourlivesmanag-ing our time, either for work or family obliga-tions,orboth.Whatweneedtolearnuponfirstretiring is the word “no.” “Oh,you’re retiring?Wouldyoupleasewatch the kids during the day to save me the babysitting costs?” Answer: No. “Can we count on you to join the board at the senior center?” Answer: No. “Will you sign up to deliver meals toshut-ins?” Answer: No. No, no, no ... at least until you get a han-dle on your free time once you’ve retired. Give it at least a couple of months. During that time, explore some of your options: a hobby you never had time for, uninterrupted hours in the library, sewing the new drapes that have sat untouched for years ... you get the idea. Then, once you learn what “free time” you really have, maybe you can say “yes” now and then.

It is imperative that anyone with cancer boost and enhance their overall immunity and vi-tality. Part of the way this is done is thru diet. Normal cells use oxygen to burn fuel, but can-cer cells do it without oxygen in a process called fermentation. Fermentation is a verywastefulway to produce energy, and cancer cells waste up to 95% of the glucose they take in. Because they waste so much energy, they are constantly hungry and start stealing glucose from healthy cells. They also digest the protein in the body to convert to glucose, which is why the muscles start wasting away. Because of this, normal cells around the tumor can literally starve to death. The way to get around this is to make sure your body is getting enough protein and fat. Healthy cells can burn fat for energy, but cancer cells cannot. ItisimperativethatNOSUGARiscon-sumed if you have a diagnosis of cancer, and try to eat very little carbs in general - carbs are read-ily converted to glucose. You need the protein to help sustain muscle mass. The anti-cancer diet includes all the vegetables you want, limited bread (no more than twice/week), some meats but not cooked on the grill, limited fruits (sug-aragain),andtherightkindofoils.UseMCToil (medium chain triglyceride) to help prevent weight loss and cachexia - it helps promote sig-nificantmusclebuildingandisnotstoredasfat(we use it in our weight loss clinics all the time). Getuptoonetablespoon3timesaday,andtakewith food or after a meal. Use whey protein for extra protein intake, except with brain cancer. Do not eat out, as most restaurants do not serve food that promote health and use lots of sugar, MSG,salt, graviesandadditives. Howmuch protein do you eat? Limityour meat intake to 6 oz per meal, about theamountthatwouldfitinthepalmofyourhand.Avoid red meats, especially beef, pork and lamb - they are high in iron and the iron is highly absorbable. They also contain high levels of arachidonic acid, a powerful cancer fertilizer. Eat organic chicken and turkey, and wash thechicken before preparing to remove any chlo-rine. Avoid bottom dwelling sea creatures, such as shrimp, oysters, crabs and lobsters - they are heavily polluted with heavy metals and indus-trial toxins. The only fruits allowed are low sugar fruits, such as berries and grapefruit, but no more than a half cupaday.Whenbuyingbreadsandotherbakedgoods, check the label for something called car-rageenan. If this additive is present, do not buy it.HealthyfatsareMCToil, extravirginoliveoiland coconut oil. You can cook with coconut oil, but cannot use olive oil past low heat. Do not use margarines, ever. Use butter instead. Avoid corn, canola, vegetable, peanut, sunflower orsaffloweroils.Formoreinformationonvitallifesavingtipsforbeatingcancer,read"NaturalStrategiesforCan-cerPatients"byDrRussellBlaylock.

Seven years ago my brother died of complications from pneumonia. He worked for a large corporation and his work required him to be gone for weeks and sometimes months at a time. He left a wifeandtwoyoungchildren.Recentlyanindi-vidual he used to work with contacted me about returning some of my brother’s personal items. The individual thought it best to contact me rather than my sister-in-law. It appears this person and my brother were very close. They worked for the same company, and from our conversation I found out that they had been lovers since col-lege. This person is now in a new relationship. Here’s the sticky part - this individual is a male! It seems my brother ‘hit for both teams.’ Should I tell my sister-in-law or pretend this never hap-pened? She is remarried and has a new life and family.Wekeepintouchbutaren’tclose.Whatshould I do? Blown Away in BonnerDear Blown Away,This information has changed your reality, so pretending you don’t know is really not an op-tion. However, is there reason enough to share this information? Seven years is a long time and she has a new life. It could be incredibly cruel to bring this forth now after all these years. Myoneredflagisthepneumonia.Canyoufindout if your brother was tested for AIDS? If he was positive this is ‘need to know’ information. Otherwise, I would let it rest, along with your brother. His ‘stuff’ is not as important as his memory.
