One day in 1894, he was at the bakery, watching a baker put icing on a cake using a cake decorator’s gun to force the frosting into a smooth, controllable line. Why couldn’t putty be that easy? QUICK QUIRK QUIZ: A NEW SCREW

• Henry, a businessman from Portland, Oregon, noted that sometimes screws and screwdrivers just didn’t work like they should. They were fine for home repairs and general carpentry, but there were problems when it came to assembly lines. In the 1930s, automobile manufacturers were screwing millions of screws per minute with power screwdrivers. With power tools, not only was it difficult to fit the screwdriver into the slot of a standard screw, but centrifugal force tended to force the screwdriver to slide out of the slot. Once the standard screw was screwed in all the way, the power screwdriver continued to spin, which either stripped the screw, stalled the screwdriver, or damaged the part. • Henry invented a screw with a cross-shaped slot that could be driven with more torque and would hold tighter than regular slotted screws. He named it after himself. His new screwdriver, with its pointed tip, engaged the screw much more easily and did not slip out. The indentation in the screw was so shallow that when the screw was finished screwing, the screwdriver tip sim-ply popped out. • The new screw was first used in build-ing the 1936 Cadillac and proved so effective that within two years all car manufacturers had switched. In 1936 Henry received patents for both the screw and the screwdriver, but it was so widely copied that he lost the patent in 1949. Henry died in 1958 at age 68 after seeing his screw- named after his last name- become an in-dustry standard. What was his name? (answer at top of next page)BLACK & DECKER• In 1910, Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker set up a small machine shop in Baltimore. In 1917 they invented a portable handheld drill which led to them becoming one of the most successful tool companies in the U.S.

Henry Phillips invented the Phillips screw-driver.RACHET WRENCH• Before 1964, there were socket sets but the old-fashioned socket wrench that went with the set had to be twisted endlessly. In 1964, an 18-year-old kid named Peter Roberts was tinkering around in his dad’s garage. His father repaired lawn mowers in his spare time and sometimes Peter helped him out. • One day Peter decided that repairing lawn mowers would be a lot easier if only the socket wrench had a button that would release the sock-et from the grip of the wrench. He made one up himself, and it worked. The ratchet wrench was born. • Peter, who was a junior in high school, worked part-time at the local Sears store. He took the new wrench to show his boss, who showed it to his boss, who showed it to all the company executives at headquarters in Chicago. Nearly a year went by and Peter assumed no one was in-terested in his invention. Then a lawyer came to visit Peter. • He informed the youth that Sears was prepared to offer him two cents for every one of his ratchet wrenches they sold- with the stipulation that they would not owe him any further royalties after $10,000. He said it might take Peter years to col-lect the maximum amount of the royalties owed him. Peter signed the patent over to Sears. A year later he was amazed to receive the entire $10,000 in a single check.• Suspecting that he had been taken, Peter went to court. His lawyer argued that Sears was guilty of fraud by leading Peter to believe that they would only be able to sell a few wrenches per year when in reality they had sold over a million. He also pointed out that Peter had been a minor when he signed the contract. The judge agreed. Not only did he award Peter Roberts damages of around a million bucks, but he also gave Peter the patent back.

Michael Paul was raised in a Muslim family in Iraq, but was forced to flee after he was targeted by the Sharia court and sentenced to death for Apostasy. He suffered tremendous persecution including abandonment by his fam-ily, and being kidnapped and tortured because of his Christian faith and his service to the U.S. Military during operation Iraqi Freedom. God has used Michael Paul's testimony and knowl-edge of Muslim culture, Islam and the Qur'an to create a ministry here in Coeur d Alene, Idaho, called Salvation For Muslims. He shares his story and knowledge to further awareness of the need to reach Muslims for salvation through the Gos-pel of Jesus Christ. He has opened a new Salon at 735 W. QUICK QUIRK QUIZ:A FLASHLIGHT BATTERY• Russian immigrant Akiba Horowitz changed his name to Conrad Hubert when he came to America in 1891. He was fascinated by the in-vention of electricity. Hubert began to tinker. He invented a number of electrical novelties, such as a portable fan and an illuminated flower pot. He named his business the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company. • Then he hired an inventor name David Misell, who had invented the bicycle light. While work-ing for Hubert, Misell invented the flashlight, assigning the patent to Hubert. It was called the flashlight because at first it would only light up for a moment or two before going out. Hubert tin-kered with the invention, improved it, patented it in 1903, and handed out samples to New York City cops, who gave him rave reviews. Within a few years Hubert was a millionaire. • In 1914 the National Carbon Company (which supplied Hubert with his materials) bought half interest in the company, and the name of the firm was changed. Production of the batteries used in flashlights overtook production of flash-lights. During the Great Depression, advertise-ments for the company consistently depicted a child, a pet, and a flashlight in various Norman Rockwell-like situations. One such ad showed a young girl checking on a litter of nine kittens us-ing her flashlight. This image became so popular that thousands of posters were sold, giving the company a new icon: a cat with nine lives. What is the name of the company? (Answer at top of next page.)IT’S A FACT• When Commander Alan Bean walked on the moon, he tried to fix a TV camera that was not working by hitting it with a hammer. He failed.Answer: Eveready, now owned by Energizer

It was French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre who made the following sage observation: “Three o’clock is always too late or too early for any-thing you want to do.”

Mary Todd Lincoln’s half-sister, Emily Todd, was married to Confederate Gen. Benjamin Helm. When her husband died in 1863, Em-ily crossed Union lines to visit her sister in the White House. Newspapers in the North created a furor over incident, speculating that the gen-eral’s widow could be a spy. After taking an oath of loyalty to the Union, Emily Helm was granted amnesty.

Here’s a real-life doozy for you: In 2002, after a bank robbery in Wrestedt, Germany, the culprits led law-enforcement officials on a 620-mile chase through several countries. After two days, the criminals were finally apprehended in Rivne, Ukraine.

VITAMINS: EXPENSIVE URINEOne of the largest growing industries today is the vitamin supplement industry. It has become a multi-billion dollar business with interests more in the pockets of shareholders than in the interest of human welfare. The marketing propaganda alone is a billion dollar industry. We have demoted nutrition to a chemical pill with a 75 year shelf life and a wad full of money in the pocket of some investors, while the same money from the consumer goes out as expensive urine! What an industry! First we take the food we eat and then process out the vital nutrients so the food doesn’t go bad. Then we realize we’re getting sick because we’re missing out on those vital nutri-ents, so we create a product, a “supplement”, to get those nutrients back into our body so it can func-tion again. But then we run into the same problem as the original food – spoilage. We found that if we put the good stuff back in (this time as a “supplement”), it too didn’t last long. So we created a way for it to last forever too – we synthesized it! Problem solved. Or is it?The media over the past few years has been gleefully airing reports such as: “Mega-Vitamin Mega Myth”, “The Vitamin Hoax”, “Vitamin E May Increase Heart Failure Risk” and similar other articles. There is both fact and fiction in them. Initially when research was conducted on vitamins, they used real vitamins – vitamins from foods. Today, vitamins from foods are rare and have been replaced by chemical counterfeits, marketed as “the same thing” as found in foods. Since that’s what’s being consumed, that is what the studies used. Because chemical substitutes simply cannot mimic nature, nor have the functionality needed in the body, in the studies they found that the vitamins today were doing more harm, than good. One last thing: I know your supplements say they are “natural”. So does everything else. I know they promote themselves as the “best” as well. So does everyone else. Marketing can convince you of anything. They spend billions of dollars annually towards that end. They certainly won’t tell you the detriments or you wouldn’t buy them would you?In truth, you need vitamin supplements today for your body to function optimally, but you need supplements made from real food not counterfeits. If you want to learn how to tell the difference, stop by Vital Health or e-mail us for a copy of my handout, “4 Ways to Determine if Your Supple-ments are Made from Chemicals or from Food.”

Q&A with Susan Ashley, MD

And, as an added bonus, they found that eating sourdough bread affected the next meal, causing them to want to eat less for lunch! In an interview the researcher stated "This shows that what you have for breakfast influences how your body will respond for lunch". I preach this everyday to my patients, and know that eating a high protein, zero carbohydrate breakfast is one of the best aspects of a weight loss program, as it strongly influences appetite for the rest of the day. What about the other breads?White bread caused a big insulin response, simi-lar to sugar. But whole wheat bread was worse - the sugar and insulin responses after eating whole wheat bread were actually worse than for white bread! Why?According to the professor, the poor responses from whole wheat are probably due to the fact that the milling process involved in making the whole wheat bread used in the study is similar to that used for white bread. That is not the case with whole grain breads. He added, "The parts of the grain like wheat germ and bran that have the health benefits are taken out to create white flour and then partially added back in to make whole wheat. Based on the findings of this study, as well as a follow up study using whole grain rather than whole wheat, we are learning that the best way to get these nutrients is through whole grain bread, not whole wheat."So, if you must have bread ( I use it as a treat, maybe once a week at most), eat sourdough. And if you want to lose weight quickly and safe-ly, consider a very low carbohydrate diet.

WHAT ABOUT BREAD?Bread - the Staff of LifeEverybody loves bread. Especially freshly baked right out of the oven. But bread can make you fat, and make it more difficult to lose weight, right? Well, it depends. Not all breads are cre-ated equal. A new study looked at different types of bread and measured their insulin response. Insulin is the hormone that goes up after we eat, to bring our blood sugars down. Without insulin, we would die. But high insulin levels put on fat, since insulin is a fat-storing hormone. On different days, people in the study were fed 50 gms, or 2 slices, of white bread, whole wheat bread, white sourdough bread, or whole grain wheat barley bread. Then for 3 hours after they ate the bread, they measured blood sugar and in-sulin.So which bread was best? The lowest blood sug-ar response came after eating sourdough bread. The sourdough bread actually resulted in greater insulin sensitivity, which is a good thing. The fermentation of the sourdough changes the na-ture of the starches in the bread so they have a different effect in the body than regular bread.

Famous CanadiansNORMAN BREAKEY

• Norman James Breakey was born February 25th, 1891 in Pierson, Manitoba. Around 1940, he came up with an idea that would make paint-ing large areas much easier. • At the time, the standard paint brush was the only method available, and the labor was dif-ficult: “Take a paint brush in your right hand, or your left hand if you are left handed, or both hands if it is a big brush. Dip the brush into a can of paint and raise it above your head, being care-ful not to let the paint roll down your arm. Dab it on the ceiling, repeat the process hundreds of times. Then—take a bath.” Norman Breakey de-vised a cylinder covered in fabric that picked up more paint than a brush. It was the pre-curser to the modern paint roller. • Breakey approached Tom Hamilton, an execu-tive for A.B. Caya Fabrics, for advice on what type of fabric to use to cover his roller. Years later, Hamilton recalled: “He wanted my opin-ion on the best kind of fabric that offered a stiff bristly nap. I asked for what purpose, and he said ‘For rolling paint.’ I scratched my head at that but he resolutely went on and described to me something with a handle shaped like a ‘7’ that would hold a cardboard, fabric-covered cylinder. ‘If my theory is right this thing will revolution-ize painting in Canada,’ he said. Well, the best thing I could think of was that bristly green mo-hair velour that was used to cover railway tour-ing coaches in those days. So I sold him a bolt of that, told him how to cut it on the bias, suggested some glues and away he went, beaming out the door. Later he came by and thanked me for my advice. He gave me one of his original rollers and a tray that had been hammered out by a local tinsmith. Neither of us knew then how big his in-vention would get to be.” (continued next page)

Adaptive Sports Get VA GrantThe Department of Veterans Affairs is putting up $8 million for grants to providers of adaptive sports opportunities for disabled veterans and members of the armed forces.A lot goes into providing events and opportu-nities: training, supplies, coaches, equipment, recreation therapists, program development and more, right in the veteran’s community. For more advanced athletes, there are the Paralym-pic and adaptive sport programs on regional and national levels. The grant money will be very welcome and might even result in additional programs being created across the country. (In addition, when training for the Paralympics, there’s a monthly training allowance.)A few examples of upcoming events: Summer Sports Clinic in San Diego, Sept. 7- 12; Tee Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa, Sept. 8-11; War-rior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sept. 28-Oct. 4; Creative Arts Festival in Milwaukee, Oct. 27-Nov. 2.To learn more about these events, go online to www.va.gov/adaptivesports. If you wonder if one of the adaptive sports pro-grams is for you (or someone you know), go to the website and click around. Look at the Mis-sion Re-Defined video. (Warning: There is a 3-second IED explosion at the 25-second mark on the video. It passes quickly.)To find ongoing activities and sports clubs near you, click on Search by Location and put in your ZIP code. (Don’t search by your state because I found at least one that was misfiled.) You’ll see a list of clubs along with contact information, including phone and email. Click on each en-try to see which activities are offered and which disability groups are supported. The variety of available activities is wide rang-ing: paddle sports, basketball, shooting, wheel-chair tennis, rugby, water skiing, cross-country skiing and much more. NORMAN BREAKEY, cont’d• Unfortunately, Breakey lacked the money to produce a significant supply of rollers on his own. Attempts to persuade investors to back him failed. Meanwhile, people started tinkering with the design, altering it just enough to that they were able to apply for their own patents.• When hogs’ hair bristles became scarce dur-ing World War II, an inventor named Richard Croxton Adams working for Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland, Ohio, made a paint roller called a “Roller-Koater” that did not use bristles. Adams became the first U.S. patent holder for a paint roller.• At least one account claims Breakey died poor and unknown not long after he came up with his invention. He went without public notice until 1967, when he was listed in both the inventors volume of McClelland & Stewart’s Canadian Centennial Library and a Maclean’s feature called “Who’s Who of Canadian What’s His Names.” Breakey may have been under-herald-ed in life, but his work has aided generations of painters. • Here are some tips for the next time you use one of Norman Breakey’s rollers: Use a lint roller on your paint roller to get loose bits of fuzz off it prior to painting. Use a Swiffer on your walls to collect dust before painting. Line your paint tray with a plastic bag so you won’t have to clean it, then put the paint tray inside a cardboard box tray, such as the ones that come underneath a flat of water bottles. Paint large surfaces using a pattern of large ‘Ws’ across the wall, back and forth. Cover places like hinges and door knobs with Vasoline to prevent paint from sticking. If the painter’s tape won’t peel, put it in a mi-crowave for 10 seconds. Alcohol wipes such as those found in first aid kits will wipe up paint drips, and Q-tips will touch up tiny spots. Store the paint roller in a Ziplok baggie in a Pringles can to keep it fresh over night.

Dear Tamara,I went to a wig salon and tried on some wigs that I really liked , but I was taken back by the cost of them. I went home and decided to see if I could find the same wigs on a site on the internet . To make a long story short I purchased one but I have had to send it back three times. It just doesn’t fit right or the color is bad. What a mess I have made for my-self by trying to save a couple of dollars. HELP!!!!Ms. Confused

Dear Ms. Confused,I have seen this happen so many times. The inter-net is a good source for a lot of things including purchasing a variety of different items. The prob-lem is there are so many people doing business on the internet that you as a consumer must decide on which one to do business with and then trust that they know their business. Most manufacturers of Wigs, Grafts, and Enhancements only do business with Wig Salons that have a business location with an address in a city. They do not sell their goods to people who have just an internet business only. There are many reasons they do this, but the main reason is for sanitation. When a customer comes into my Wig Salon we have certain criteria that we do. We must protect the wig cap from touching the scalp of the customer at all times. When we sell the customer the Wig or Graft or Enhancement and the customer puts it on her or his head and it touches their scalp we for no reason can take that Wig, Graft, or Enhancements back - not for any reason. But on the internet there are no rules. So it is your choice. Do you want to purchase a hair system that you do not know who may have had it on their head and how many times it has been returned and resold? The choice is yours. Manufacturers are known to sell their mistakes that are made on hair systems to people who have an internet business for pennies on a dollar. My opinion is that I would not purchase a Hair System from anyone on the internet, unless I re-ally checked them out thoroughly first. Another consideration is the cost for the Hair System you are thinking about getting. Human hair costs the most especially European hair. Then there is Remi, Diamond, Yak, and Endura which is also human hair. Synthetic hair is what most clients purchase due to the cost. Today fibers in Synthetic wigs look and feel like human hair, and the longevity of these wigs can be as long as 10 years with the proper care.So bottom line is this: "You get what you pay for." Always ask a lot of questions about the kind of Hair system you are thinking about getting from the business establishment you are about to do busi-ness with. Make sure that these people have had training in that particular field of Hair Systems. Ask to see their Certificate of Training. This is not just a hair license. That is a completely different kind of training. To do hair systems of any kind you must go to the appropriate school for training in the Hair Systems that you are selling in your business. This way you are always pleased with the choice you make as a consumer and you have confidence in the business professionals of your choice.

Men Spook Rescue DogDEAR PAW'S CORNER: My beautiful big mutt, "Archie," is a rescue dog who is very anx-ious around men. I'm not sure why, or what's in his past to cause this. But when company comes over, he whines constantly or runs behind me to bark if a man approaches. How can I ease his anxiety? -- Linda in San Jose, Calif.

DEAR LINDA: It's clear that Archie has some trauma in his past, and he may never be com-pletely free of his anxiety. What you'll need to do is be patient and encouraging. There isn't a tried and true method to "cure" him of this, but you can ease his fears.First, talk with his vet about ways to reduce Ar-chie's overall anxiety. He may suggest medica-tion, either for a specific period of time or per-manently, to help. You also can try alternative medicine like Bach's Rescue Remedy, which many owners swear by and which can be added to Archie's water bowl once a day.Next, don't overwhelm him when company comes over. Place Archie in a back room or the kitchen, or train him to stay in place when the doorbell rings. Once everyone has settled, bring Archie in to meet each guest. If he becomes stressed or won't approach certain people, don't worry and don't be embarrassed. Just take him back to his safe room or kennel cage, give him lots of praise and maybe a treat, and leave it at that.Make sure kids (and some adults!) don't chase after Archie or insist that they get to pet him. Let Archie approach new people on his own. As he becomes more confident and secure, he may be much friendlier to visitors that he's fa-miliar with, such as close friends ... maybe. There are no certainties when it comes to dogs that suffered past abuse. Give him consideration and time.

PAINT QUICK QUIRK QUIZ: TWO INNO-VATORS

• In 1866 Henry bought an Ohio paint manufac-turing company for $2,000. Four years later, he became a partner with a man named Edward. Back then, painting was a tricky, difficult busi-ness, and only professionals did it. The paint had to be hand mixed, stirred often, and used before it dried in the container. Henry and Edward wanted to be able to sell paint directly to the people, so they knew they had to make it easy. • First they developed pre-mixed paint, then they invented the re-sealable paint can. They created different paints for different surfaces, since met-al, wood, and brick all react differently to paint. They perfected interior and exterior paints. They even developed different paints for different cli-mates. • Because there had been so many shoddy paint companies selling such poor quality paint for so long, paint had a very negative stigma which needed to be overcome. Henry and Edward de-cided to offer people a ‘money-back guarantee’ stating that their money would be cheerfully re-funded if they were not completely satisfied. This was the first company ever to offer a money-back guarantee, and it gained the public’s confidence. • When the partners discovered that auto-mobile paint took 21 days to dry, they developed a quick-dry paint that would dry in a matter of hours. They supplied the Army with camouflage paint during the war. Their company transformed the industry from something that was difficult even for professionals to accomplish to some-thing that was entirely user-friendly. The com-pany is named after Henry and Edward’s last names. What’s the company called? (Answer at top of next page.)

TRIVIA TESTby Fifi Rodriguez

QUICK QUIRK QUIZ: FISH OIL PAINT• Robert Fergusson ran away from his home in Scotland at the age of 12, and went to seek ad-venture on the sea. His duties included swabbing and re-painting the rusty metal deck, a tedious chore. One day he lunged for an open container of raw fish oil trying to catch it before it spilled, but failed. It spread all over the deck. In the days following the spill, he noticed that the rust that had been relentlessly creeping across the deck stopped where the fish oil had spilled. He re-membered this fact throughout his long career as a sea captain. • After settling in New Orleans, he frequently experimented with fish oil-based paints. The problem was that they smelled terrible and took forever to dry. When Fergusson was 42 years old, he was put in charge of a fleet of ships dur-ing World War I. Taking the opportunity to do further experiments with fish oil, he finally hit on a formula that smelled better, dried fast, and stopped rust overnight. • After the war, he founded a paint company in 1921, which did quite well. Today it’s a world-wide leader in protective paints and coatings for both home and industry, and still offers the famous rust-fighting formula that started it all back in 1921. The company’s motto, ‘Rust Nev-er Sleeps’, was created by the members of the rock group Devo when they worked for an Ohio advertising agency prior to becoming famous. What’s the name of the company? (Answer at bottom of page.) Answer: Sherwin-Williams.

response and provide resources where appropriate.

I’m worried about my daughter. Lynell worked hard during high school and junior college so she could finish at UNLV. Lynell went to Vegas early as a friend got her a cocktail waitress-ing job to earn some mon-ey. Two months ago she met Dylan. Lynell never had a serious boyfriend and is quite naive when it comes to men and re-lationships. While naturally pretty she has never been much into her looks. Suddenly this has all changed, so much so that I hardly recognized her when I went down on a visit. Dylan is sev-eral years older and dropped out of college to pursue his career as a DJ. He is handsome, char-ismatic, and the life of the party -always with an entourage in tow. To me he is egotistic and dan-gerous. Lynell is mesmerized and has lost her focus on school, and, I’m sure they’re having sex. Lynell won’t talk about it and is distancing herself from family and friends. I’m at a com-plete loss of what to do. I have tried to warn her about men like this but she refuses to heed my warnings. What can I do to get her back on track before she destroys her life?Heartsick in HaydenDear Heartsick,You are right to be concerned. When someone’s behavior changes this drastically so quickly something is definitely wrong. Men like Dylan prey on vulnerable young women. Lynell is just one in a long line of conquests needed to feed an insatiable ego. He’s made her feel special and has created a dependency. Now her self-worth is all wrapped up in how attentive he is. The rela-tionship is one sided and doomed and it may get worse if drugs and alcohol are involved. Stop with the warnings and disapproval. This will only cause her to want him more. Do encourage birth control, safe sex, and moderation. Be posi-tive and loving; she’s going to need people who truly care for her more than ever. This little bird has flown the nest and is well into learning one of life’s biggest lessons - not to look for love and approval outside yourself, but to find and nurture it within yourself. While she’s attending the ‘school of hard knocks’ college may have to wait. This experience will change her and how she looks at life and relationships. Stay strong and keep your heart and all avenues open. She’s lucky to have you.

How Old Is Old?When do we seniors finally reach old age? The answer depends on who we ask, and when.Back in 2009, Pew Research did a survey, and the average answer was at 68 years old ... unless the person being asked was under 30. Then “old age” struck before age 60, said the youngsters. Those who were already age 65 said old age didn’t arrive until age 74. The result was even disputed by sex; when all ages were averaged, women said age 70, and men said age 66.The top four answers to the question about be-coming old netted conflicting mile markers: 1) Turns 85; 2) can’t live independently; 3) can’t drive; 4) turns 75.Here’s a smile: A U.K. study done four years ago pegs the end of youth at 35 and the beginning of old age at 58. In Portugal, it was age 29 when youth ended. (Did you feel middle aged at 30?)Fast-forward to now: Similar research shows that those over 40 think “old age” starts at age 80. My, how things have changed. Seems that retirement doesn’t automatically put us in the old age category, at least for those who are de-cades younger than we are. Perhaps it’s how we’re living now that makes a difference in perceptions of age. Our parents might have sat back after retirement at age 65, taken on at-home hobbies, napped in the af-ternoon and called it good. We’re out there in the world traveling, being active, working out, texting the grandkids, learning musical instru-ments, acting in local theater, volunteering, join-ing clubs -- and often still working. At this point, 36 percent of us don’t think we’ll retire at age 65 -- maybe because we can’t?Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her col-umn whenever possible.
