The Leadership Corner

As mentioned in prior newsletter articles on this subject, you do not have to be the CEO to be a leader. We will focus in the 2018-2019 program year on leadership and identifying skills and tools that we can develop to become leaders in our organization, our work unit, or our realm of records and information management. The following quotes are offered to inspire you:

“The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes.” Tony Blair

“As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.” Bill Gates

“A leader is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.” Nel-son Mandela

“Efficiency is doing the right thing. Effectiveness if doing the right thing.” Peter F. Drucker

“Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their re-sults.” George Patton

“Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it.” Unknown

“Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand.” Colin Powell

“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go but ought to be.” Rosalynn Carter

PRESERVING YESTERDAY, MANAGING TODAY,

PREPARING FOR TOMORROW

In The News

NARA Investigation: After receiving a July 6 complaint from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW), the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration started an investigation of proper retention of records at the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies. On July 10, NARA asked Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Health and Human Services to respond within 30 days to CREW’s allegation about lost or destroyed records that would link detained migrant children and their parents.

The Internet Of Things (IOT) Predictions for 2019: 1) Overall Growth. Today 3.6 billion devices connect to

the internet for daily tasks and this number will continue to grow. In response look for 5G connec-tivity and a move from data center storage to edge computing with the IOT device data stored closer to the source.

2) New Industrial Revolution and Information Age. Sensors, smart tags, and the number of connected devices in manufacturing will double between 2017 and 2020. By 2019 it is predicted that 87% of healthcare organizations will adopt IOT solutions. IOT will continue to change how we do thins and lead to innovations so we can do more with less.

3) IOT devices can leave users vulnerable to security issues. In 2019, hardware manufacturers and security vendors will start to address these risks and sell solutions to them as well.

4) Forget your refrigerator giving you that shopping list; in 2019, you will start to see Smart Neighbor-hoods. Sensors are placed around the neighbor-hood to gather data to use to create a safer, cleaner and more convenient place to live.

5) IOT is changing how we drive today by regularly reporting tire pressure or engine issues. You will want to keep buying those new cars so you can get all the new bells and whistles that you never knew you needed.
