We’ll miss Walter, our favorite curmudgeon, but Nancy Johnson, who promotes antiquesand antiquarian book shows in Iowa,Colorado and California, will surely breathnew life into the show, which is a Salt Lakeinstitution, but had been waning in recentyears. Congratulations to Nancy, and bestwishes to Walter, who embarks on a wellearned retirement.
The Man in the Moon as he sails the skyis a very remarkable skipper,
but he made a mistake when he tried to takea drink of milk from the Dipper.
He dipped right out of the Milky Way,and slowly and carefully filled it,

The King Sisters: Imagination
Goldmine record album price guide values original copies of Imagination, with
Cover, in near mint condition, at $25.00
One of the most talented and enduring female vocal acts of the Big Band and Jazz era - The King Sisters - began life as small town Utah girls. I had very the good fortune to be born the granddaughter of Alyce, one of the King Sisters, and grew up immersed in the rich stories of these granddaughters of Mormon pioneers who found their way to the most popular stages and dance halls in the 1930s, regular appearances on radio and in film in the 1940s, a Grammy nomination and critical acclaim in the 1950s, and a popular television show in the 1960s and 70s. Certainly, they were gifted singers and performers who worked extremely hard for their success, but just as importantly, they had an infectious enthusiasm for living life surrounded by beauty, and an innate sense of style and sophistication that tran-scended their humble beginnings.
The children of Pearl Mortensen and William King Driggs of Pleasant Grove were destined for a life of music. Their father (who went by the name of King) was an itinerant music teacher with grand artistic visions and a very small salary. The children received a thorough education in music, and during the 1920s, the family regularly toured and performed as The Driggs Family of Entertainers, living on the road, presenting a variety show complete with band music, singing, dancing, and dramatic readings at churches, schools, and auto camps throughout the western states. At the end of a show, they’d “pass the hat” and move on. My grandmother often said of her restless and idealistic musician father “if he were born later, he would have been a hippie.”
By the early 1930s, inspired by the trend-setting harmonies of the Boswell Sisters, the teenage girls had developed their own style of tight vocal harmony. During the Depression, they could be heard regularly on KSL in Salt Lake City and KLX in Oakland. It was around that time they decided the name Driggs lacked the right dramatic flair, so borrowing their father’s name, they became The King Sisters. In 1934, bandleader Horace Heidt invited the sisters to join his popular orchestra in San Francisco. That move introduced the sisters to a national audience, and just as im-portantly, introduced them to guitar innovator and bandleader Alvino Rey, forming a musical and personal alliance (he married one of the sisters) that would last for the rest of their lives. Alvino Rey and the King Sisters signed a seven year recording contract with RCA Victor Records, and worked with many of the Big Band greats - including Tommy Dorsey, Nelson Riddle, Billy May, and Johnny Mandell. During this period, The King Sisters appeared in over 20 films, including Cuban Pete which starred a young Desi Arnaz.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the lifestyle of endless touring and recording was temporarily replaced by caring for young families, but music couldn’t be put off for long. During the 50s, The King Sisters sound continued to evolve and improve, leaving behind the energetic novelty songs and dance music of the Big Band years, moving toward smooth, sophisticated jazz harmonies. They signed a contract with Capital Records and produced a series of albums with a modern sound, including 1958’s Imagination, for which they received a Grammy nomination in the category “Best Group Vocal Performance.” Imagination is a marvelous showcase for the sisters’ vocal talents- their rich voices blending perfectly across the huge range betweens Yvonne’s soprano and Alyce’s deep contralto. This album established the sound for which they would be known for the duration of their musical careers. The elegant arrangements first heard on Imagination would be performed again on The King Family Show on television through-out the 1960s and stage shows for decades.
It’s the music I grew up with, the soundtrack to my early life. Back then, I never had to put on a record to wrap my-self in that sound. Growing up in the singing King Family, every gathering large or small involved incredible music. I don’t think I ever heard “Happy Birthday to You” sung in anything other than four part harmony. Now, all these years later, with those lovely women gone, what a gift it is to come across King Sisters recordings and know that their music lives on.

theNEW CENTURY COLLECTOR
The use of decoys as a hunting tool can be traced back hundreds of years. Native American Indians crafted and used duck decoys composed mainly of sticks and real duck feathers. Carved wooden decoys can be traced back to the late eighteenth century. By the early nineteenth century, carvers were making two types of wooden decoys. Floating decoys, made to resemble swimming birds, such as ducks, geese and
swans, and “Stick-up” decoys which were mounted on poles to represent wading shore birds, such as curlews, peeps and plovers. By the mid 1800’s, demand for fresh water foul had created a large com-mercial hunting industry, with hunters using 200 to 300 decoys at a time. To fill the growing demand, a cottage industry of American carvers sprung up, and later, decoy factories emerged. This, along with the development of advanced firearms would, by the turn of the century, cause the extinc-tion of several water foul species, resulting in the 1918 Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, making the sale of any hunted birds illegal. In 1930 spring hunting was banned making autumn and winter the only seasons for hunt-ing. These restrictions began the decline of carved wooden decoys for com-mercial hunters, but decoys continued to be made for sporting hunters Experts agree that the two master carvers were Lothrop Holmes (1824-1899), the Kingston, Massachusetts, craftsman who carved only for his own use, and A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952), of East Harwich, Massachusetts,
who began carving full-time as a business in 1912. Of the pair whose work holds down most of the top price records, Crowell was the more prolific. However, not all collectible decoys were produced by individual carvers such as Elmer Crowell, Lothrop Holmes. The nineteenth century demand for decoys brought about several factories, the largest of these being the Mason Factory of Detroit (1896-1924). They adver-tised themselves as the ‘Largest Manufacturers of High Grade Decoys in the World’ and sold thousands of decoys by mail order for about a dollar a piece. Most decoys are not signed or dated. The only markings were usually added by hunters for identification purposes. Carvers continued making decoys up until the 1960s when plastic decoys became more prevalent. The value of an antique bird decoy depends on several things. First, the condition of the decoy. If it’s in bad shape, this will naturally detract from the value. Secondly, the rarity of the antique decoy will also increase or decrease its value. The harder it is to find and the more demand there is for it, the larger value you can expect a decoy to have. Last, is the overall appeal of the decoy. Is the decoy visually an attractive piece? The best decoys are like works of art and often the most beautiful antique decoys hold the most value. You may just want to appreciate the beauty of an antique bird decoy like you would any other piece of artwork, but you may also want to become a collector. Bird decoy collec-tors generally fall into two categories: hunters and connoisseurs. Until the late 1980s, most collectors of decoys, were male, and if not hunter’s themselves, had some connection with duck hunting through family or friends. By the 1990’s, collectors of folk art began to join the ranks of decoy collectors. When hunting, any representative carving will attract birds, but decoy carvers go far beyond the utilitarian, and produce beautiful and detailed works
of folk art. Decoys have moved from the early morning fields and lakes to the collector’s cabinet. A collection of duck decoys is not hard to start. You can find bird decoys sold in antiques shops, on the internet, or at antique auctions. You will also notice a wide range of prices, from quite affordable to very, very high. It’s a good idea to do a little research, familiarizing yourself with this collecting field. A good price guide on duck decoy’s can help you become knowledgeable about what you might expect to pay for different decoys. These collectors books and price guides can be found at your local bookstore or on the internet. Once you’re ready to begin collecting, remember, it’s a good idea to initially buy only from established dealers and auctions specializing in decoys. As with any high-priced collectible, an increase in value has brought an increase in fakes and reproductions. There are many methods used to ‘antique’ a new decoy, including tumble washing and staining. Authenti-cally older decoys are sometimes repainted or touched up in order to improve the condi-tion or value. So be careful, and Happy Hunting!
