Merit Roll of Honour Tutor Group Merit Table Week
HEADTEACHER’S BLOG Thursday 11 February 2016 6.50pm One of the best developments here at Thurstable in the last few years has been that we have been able to work together with the primary schools in our area more and more effectively. We now have a Tiptree & District Local Delivery Group, chaired by Gordon Malcolm, Head Teacher of St Lukes. As Head Teachers we work together really well as equals to secure even better learning opportunities for all our students, from reception to the Sixth Form, all of us learning from each other. In an ever changing education landscape, this is one of the developments that I value most. Examples of work that has benefitted numbers of students across primary and secondary include our production of “Joseph” with its mixed phase cast, our joint work “behind the scenes” with several schools in ICT and in site management, subject links in English, Maths and Science, and our students taking part in a themed French day (and soon a Science themed day) at St Lukes.
One of the links we share is in teacher training, where a number of our partner primary schools have joined the Colchester Teacher Training Consortium, of which Thurstable is a founder member. A vital job of every Head Teacher is recruiting great teachers, and today we appointed two excellent newly qualified teachers who will bring even greater strength to our Mathematics and Modern Foreign Languages Faculties from September. Seeing their enthusiasm and determination to help young people to make the most of their lives has made a wonderful ending to this half term.
Have a great week with your children. MAS Bacon Head Teacher

YOUNG WRITER
Lewis Mills, year 8, recently submitted a short story for the Young Writers' Spine-Chillers Competition. Lewis's short story entitled 'The Empty House' has been chosen for publication in the ‘Spine-Chillers' edition which will be published at the end of April.
For this exciting competition, students were asked to write a story that used atmosphere, tension and suspense, with the added challenge of using 100 words or fewer.
Lewis' story is a blood-curdling tale of a girl and her mother's visit to an old, derelict house with catastrophic
and diabolical consequences.
The school library will receive a complimentary copy of the collection of short stories and Lewis has been presented with a certificate of merit and a bookmark as a record of his tremendous achievement.
Well done Lewis; keep writing!

SCIENCE OF WATER TRIP
On 22 March Year 8’s will be finding out about the Science of Water from the BAE systems
education programme.
In this brand new presentation for 2016 they will explore the world of waves – not just waves on water, but light and sound waves too.
They will examine how engineers and scientists use their understanding of the different kinds of waves to create sophisticated communications systems, optical devices and ships and submarines that can withstand the crushing pressures of the waves in the sea.
Divided into 3 parts, the presentation features demonstrations and activities that help students understand the similarities and differences between sound, water and light waves. The final part of the presentation looks at examples from within BAE Systems, the RAF and the Royal Navy, where knowledge of different wave types is exploited by engineers to solve problems.
