Children’s literature and books play a fundamental role in developing children’s academic engagement, development and life chances, providing the framework and stimulus through which to deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them, through empathising with characters and situations in high quality stories.

WHY WE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT BOOKS
We know how busy you are so, to take the hard work out of planning for World Book Day we’ve partnered with the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) to put together a set of twenty di erent ideas for Reception to Year 6, along with all the resources you’ll need to make them happen. Based around the action words, CrEaTe, ImAgInE, DiScOvEr, ExPlOrE and ExPeRiEnCe, there are simple suggestions and case studies too, so that you can see how they’ve worked in other settings. There are also lots of ideas for sharing books and reading.
Whether you pick one idea or try a few, The Big Book O will help ensure that the gains of celebrating books and reading on World Book Day continue to ripple long beyond the day itself.
Plus, you’ll have access to free teaching resources at cLpE.oRg.uK so you can do more in-depth work.

Welcome to the world of...
Sophy Henn lives and works in Sussex, England. She studied Fashion at Central Saint Martins, accidentally had a London-based career as an Art Director in advertising, then completed an MA in Illustration at the University of Brighton. Now she writes and illustrates children’s books in her studio, with a large cup of tea by her side, and can’t quite believe her luck.
Sophy created the gorgeous illustrations you’ll find dotted around our website and on the tokens, resource packs and display materials for World Book Day 2015. Her very first book, Where Bear? is a deceptively simple and exquisitely illustrated picture book about a little boy and his bear, and their journey to find a place called home.
CHRIS EVANS’s short story-writing competition for children aged 13 and under returns to BBC Radio 2 in JANUARY 2015!
The ReadingZone Picture Book Competition kicks off in January 2015 when children and young people aged 4–18 years are invited to create a picture book, either individually, in a group or as a class. The picture books can be made using any media and can be up to 24 pages long. The competition will be judged by a well-known author or illustrator (still to be announced) and the overall winner gets a FREE AUTHOR EVENT. Winners of each of the four categories get 50 PRINTED COPIES of their winning picture book.
Copyright is really important for authors, poets, artists, musicians and all creators. No one likes it when someone else copies their work – especially when they take credit for it. It’s also wrong if someone copies work and then puts it online for anyone to see or to use without permission. It’s essential that children understand why copyright matters so that all creators continue to receive the credit and payment they are entitled to. Download the Publishers Association’s new lesson plan to help you explain copyright and the role it plays in protecting ideas. Find it at WORLDBOOKDAY.COM/RESOURCES
Children love hearing what others their age are reading. There’s a fabulous recommendation website featuring library users’ favourites at SUMMERREADINGCHALLENGE.ORG.UK/BOOK-SORTER
