NEW DELHI, May 8:
The Budget session ofParliament was abruptlyadjourned sine die today, withthe second phase turning out tobe a total washout amid opposi-tion demands for the resignationof Prime Minister ManmohanSingh and Ministers AshwaniKumar and P K Bansal.
The second phase of thesession, which began on April22, was adjourned sine die twodays before its scheduled end.
With the sudden curtail-ment of the session, key legis-lations like the National FoodSecurity Bill and the LandAcquisition Bill could not bepassed.
The only business that wastransacted was passage of theFinance Bill marking the com-pletion of the Budgetary exer-cise and the Railway Budgetwithout any discussion afterwalkout by the Opposition.
The Government tried hardfor passage of the Food SecurityBill in the Lok Sabha butOpposition BJP stood groundsaying it would facilitate its pas-sage only if the Congressremoved Bansal and Kumar.
Rajya Sabha ChairmanHamid Ansari made a tersecomment on the functioning ofthe House saying the record ofwork done and not done in thesecond half of the BudgetSession was in public domainand did not require any com-mentary.
He also put three questionsincluding has the balancebetween deliberation, regula-tion and accountability totallybeen lost and have the mem-bers of this body assessed theimpact of frequent disruptions.
With not much work donein the House, Lok SabhaSpeaker Meira Kumar chosenot to make her customaryvaledictory address.
The three-month long ses-sion had begun on February 21
with President PranabMukherjee's maiden address tothe joint sitting of both LokSabha and Rajya Sabha.

Parliament spoke in onevoice to condemn the brutalincident of gangrape of a Delhigirl and passed a tough anti-
rape law.Members were also united
in rejecting a resolution ofPakistan's National Assemblycondemning the hanging ofParliament attack convict AfzalGuru.(PTI)
