PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — It’s a scenario firefighters train for, but hope they never have to face.

On June 23, a fire broke out in Waldo Canyon, a popu-lar hiking area in Colorado Springs, Colo. With a multi-tude of firefighters from the local community sent to battle the flame, the Knights from the 21st Space Wing quickly stepped up to the plate to support the effort.

Cheyenne Mountain Fire and Emergency Services from Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station were called that day to assist with the ini-tial fire in Waldo Canyon.

According to Chris Soliz, Cheyenne Mountain Fire Department assistant chief of training, the CMFES has a mutual aid agreement with the Colorado Springs Fire Department and often coordinates with them in training and response. With this agreement already in place, there was an imme-diate request for mutual-aid support.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Fellow Knights, as I write this commen-tary the Waldo Canyon Fire rages on and has been for six days. I know I speak for all of us when I say that my heart goes out to all who have lost so much as a result of this tragedy and relay a resounding ‘thanks’ to those working to extinguish the blaze and assist those in need.

The most obvious thing for me to write about is the incredible teamwork, resolute Wingmanship and community partnership I’ve observed from all of you as we’ve charged the fire and contingency response head-on. But, I have a sneaking suspicion that our Lead Knight, Col. Chris Crawford, will have some words to say on that and think it best to not steal his thunder. Especially since we medics performed a rock-ectomy recently from his anterior landscape (i.e. stole his spirit rock)! As such, I’ll shift gears and quickly share with you three of my favorite attributes of leaders, followers and everyone in between.

This week, I lost a great friend around here to retirement. I think you all knew

her and will always remember her — Col. Kim Conner, our previous mission support group commander. Without doubt, she had an amazing impact on the installation, in the community, but most importantly on our people. Thinking about the fun, chal-lenges and successes we shared over this past year, it was apparent to me that she subscribed to three fundamental leadership attributes that I have always appreciated in those around me...humility, credibility and approachability. Maybe that’s why I liked her so much. These attributes are certainly not new to any of us yet are fundamental to all of us, regardless of rank or position,

and are a cornerstone upon which we should develop our leadership ethos. Best wishes and Godspeed to you Kim.

I’m also a big fan of Gen. Colin Powell for his insightful yet pragmatic approach. We all seem to have our favorite quotes, here’s one of mine from him: “Leadership is solv-ing problems. The day Soldiers stop bring-ing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.” You don’t have to chew on this for long to catch his indirect ref lection on credibility and approachability...humility is unstated but understood.

Please be Humble. No matter how good you are at what you do, stay grounded — don’t let it go to your head. There is no room for boasters, blowhards or bigmouths in the Profession of Arms.

Please be Credible. Strive to be an ex-pert in your duties and everything you en-deavor. Become the subject-matter expert that people seek out. Don’t just know your

By Maj. Chad Johnson21st Medical Group Mental Health Flight

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — It is in every form of news reporting daily. In fact, the day this article was written the leading headlines in many national publications and on various websites reported:

Washington Post: “Bob Welch, the former guitar-ist of Fleetwood Mac, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

CNN: “Grieving father Denis Asselin completed his journey from Philadelphia to Boston, a walk that lasted for 45 days and 525 miles, in memory of his son Nathaniel, who took his own life the previous year.”

Stars & Stripes and Time Magazine: “There have been 154 confirmed Active Duty military suicides in the first 155 days of 2012, a number that far outdistances the number of combat casualties in Afghanistan during the same time period.”

While there is no clear reason why people choose to take their own lives, there are various identifiable, evidenced-based risk factors that are modifiable. Since the Department of Defense began collecting detailed data on attempted and completed suicides in 1996, the risk factors noted in a large percentage of the reports are incredibly similar. Mental health treatment history, problems with the abuse of alcohol or other substances, family or relationship disruptions, financial or legal problems (approximately one-third of Air Force sui-cides are Airmen under investigation), and medical problems are indicated in nearly all attempted and completed suicides. These risk factors are also indicated in a high percentage of civilian suicides.

How are these common risk factors modifiable, especially considering the fact as human beings we sometimes make poor choices? The answer: we need to make better choices.

Example: A young Airman has an argument with his spouse about their finances and decides to go out with friends and drink heavily. He makes a poor deci-sion to get behind the wheel and ends up with a DUI. Remember the modifiable risk factors? Because of a few poor choices, he is now at elevated risk for suicide.

Various base and community agencies exist to help us with decision making. All of these agencies (chapel, Airmen and Family Readiness Center, family advo-cacy, sexual assault response coordinator, legal of-fice, Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention & Treatment program, health and wellness center, mental health) have a variety of programs geared toward increasing resiliency, improving the quality of life, and provid-ing information for Airmen and family members as-signed to Peterson Air Force Base. Helping individuals make better, more informed choices is also an inherent responsibility of your supervisor, first sergeant and commander.

Let’s revisit the example with the young Airman who argued with his wife, was arrested for DUI, and was now at an increased risk for suicide. Perhaps if the Airman or his spouse discussed the problem with the supervisor or first sergeant instead of making an impulsive decision, the outcome may have been much different.

The leader would have likely explained the couple had several options at their disposal. The A&RFC could provide financial counseling and budgeting assistance, the family advocacy program or the chapel could pro-vide preventative marital counseling so the couple could learn new methods for resolving their differences. The ADAPT program could meet with the Airman to educate him on ways to decompress or handle conflict without resorting to the use of alcohol.

While the words “suicide prevention” would not likely have come up in any of these interventions, the modifiable suicide risk factors were directly addressed and the chances of a successful outcome increased significantly.

It may not make national headlines, but the differ-ence in the lives and future of that Airman and his family may be substantial and keep them out of the news.

If you are feeling suicidal, speaking to your supervisor is always an option. Other options include the chaplain at 556-4442; mental health at 556-7804; Military One Source at 800-342-9647; or the military family life con-sultant at (719) 640-9961.

From 21st Medical GroupPETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2012-2013

school year is quickly approaching requiring many children to complete a school or sports physical.

Due to the large number of school-aged beneficiaries requiring a physical exam, it can be difficult to obtain a scheduled appointment in the clinic. Therefore, the 21st Medical Group is hosting a school/sports physical event from 1-3 p.m. July 12.

This is a great opportunity for the patients enrolled at the Peterson and Schriever Clinics to “beat the rush” and complete needed physical exams.

The school/sports physical event will be for children 5-18 years old. In order to accommodate a large number of pa-tients, this visit is for school/sport physicals only. When calling to make an appointment, please specify that is a school/sports physical appointment.

No other medical concerns will be addressed. Children with asthma, cardiac issues, head injuries in the last two years, or other chronic medical conditions must make a regular appointment with their primary care provider.

Patients should arrive 30 minutes prior to their appoint-ment to complete a pre-screening questionnaire and check-in prior to being assessed by the medical provider. Bring any paperwork required by your school district and have it completed prior to the appointment. To schedule an ap-pointment, call (719) 526-2273.

From 21st Space Wing safety officePETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— As the weather gets warmer, picnics and outdoor party season swing into gear. Many of the feasts our Knights will attend or host feature alcoholic beverages.

The simplest advice is to not operate any vehicle if you have had any amount of alco-hol. A cab ride is much cheaper than a life or career lost for one night of fun. This may seem like common sense, but some Airmen fail to appreciate the various impacts alcohol can have on an individual.

There are many physiological and cognitive impacts of alcohol, as measured by blood al-cohol content, and they can be mitigated.

The bottom line is, if you choose to im-bibe, do not operate a vehicle. A good rule of thumb is to wait approximately 12 hours between bottle and throttle.

The level of impairment for a drinker is completely dependent on blood alcohol content.

BAC is expressed as a percentage and indicates how many milligrams of alcohol per 100 milligrams of blood. Alcohol affects your central nervous system by reducing its activity and as your BAC increases, your fine motor coordination decreases.

A BAC below 0.06 percent may be con-sidered the “buzz zone.” The drinker may experience higher self-confidence, increased energy and a feeling of euphoria. The drinker may also have minor memory and reasoning impairment with lower risk management capabilities. In vehicle operations, the driver may become more confident in their abilities and drive more aggressively.

A BAC over 0.06 percent is identified as the “point of diminishing returns” where physi-ological and cognitive effects become more

pronounced and observable. The drinker may transition from euphoria to sluggish-ness, fatigue, loss of coordination and slurred speech.

In the BAC range of 0.07 to 0.09, balance, vision, speech, reaction time and hearing are all slightly impaired. These are all observable phenomena.

At BAC of 0.10 to 0.125, you will signifi-cantly lose judgment, and motor reflexes are slowed an even greater amount. A driver behind the wheel when reaching the point of diminishing returns may have trouble steer-ing and may step on the brakes too late or miss them entirely. Because of the depressed blood pressure, respiration and heart rates, drinkers’ eyes are slower to adjust to head-light glare and subsequent darkness. The slower pupil adjustment leads to temporary blindness for the drunk driver, which could cause him to crash.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a driver with a BAC of 0.10 percent or greater is seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash than a driver who has not consumed alcoholic beverages. A driver with an alcohol concentration of 0.15 percent or greater is about 25 times more likely to crash.

Coupled with the obvious physiological effects on motor skills and eye reflex, the point of diminishing returns impairs judg-ment severely enough to make poor decisions — often fatal ones.

Loss of control occurs in the BAC 0.13-0.2 range. Your euphoria earlier may be replaced by dysphoria, an intense anxiety or restless-ness. The University of Rochester noted at BAC 0.11 to 0.2 percent, intense emotional swings, ranging from boisterous to angry to sad, can occur.

If you plan on going out for the night, have

a sound plan to get home — this means you should have at least three ways to get home (designated driver, taxi, phone a friend).

As a rule of thumb, you should never drink more than one alcoholic drink per hour and no more than three drinks total per night. That is one 12-ounce beer, one 4-ounce glass of wine or one mixed drink. Pick only one, not one of each.

If you choose to drink, the following guidelines can help you be responsible while drinking:

• Sip alcoholic beverages slowly.• Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Eat

at least 15 minutes before you drink, and continue to consume food while you drink.

• Carbonated water and mixers speed up

alcohol’s effects. Therefore, add ice or noncarbonated water to dilute an alco-holic drink.

• Designated drivers should NEVER touch alcohol.

• Remember that the only way to sober up after drinking is to allow time for your body to absorb it and the alcohol to dis-sipate. Strong black coffee, cold showers or exercise do nothing to reduce intoxica-tion. Sleep it off, call a cab or ask a friend to give you a ride.

• Have a plan and stick with the plan — many military members had a great plan to safely enjoy alcohol, then in their drunken stupor, they abandon it.

Get home safe

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AFNS) — While Fourth of July celebrations and special outings to enjoy the holiday are tra-ditional early-summer pastimes, experts at the Air Force Safety Center here caution all Airmen to practice basic safety precautions.

“Everyone is anxious to enjoy summertime activities, and participating in Fourth of July fun is a great tradition,” said Bill Walkowiak, the Air Force ground safety deputy chief. “It’s important to recognize Independence Day and reflect on its history. While looking forward to traditional celebrations with friends, family and community, we all need to keep safety at the forefront of celebration plans.”

Planning is key to enjoying a safe holiday, Walkowiak said, and offered the following tips to remind Airmen of the importance of reducing the potential for mishaps:

• Keep barbecue grills at a safe distance from your house and never leave them unattended.

• Know state boating requirements, inspect your watercraft and double-check availability of life jackets before setting out on the water.

• Don’t swim alone or dive into water of un-known depth.

• Know your community’s restrictions regard-ing use of fireworks. If fireworks are permitted, encourage spectators to view from a distance, and keep a bucket of water or water hose near.

• Use plenty of sunscreen and keep hydrated while participating in all outdoor activities.

• Use seatbelts while driving and a helmet and appropriate protective gear while riding a motorcycle.

“Sometimes people get hurt because of the little things that they forget,” Walkowiak said. “We want everyone to have a great holiday and enjoy the free time. But we need everyone to come back safe and to remember: ‘Safety — it’s personal.’”

JULY RecReation and LeisURe events

BEST OF THE SOUTHWEST – ROCK AND RIVER

It’s the coolest! Enjoy the wilderness while you can. While it’s still here. Outdoor Recreation will be traveling to Labyrinth Canyon on the Green River July 23-29 for what we call the Best of the Southwest: Rock and River. It will be a chance for you to see the many historical and archeological sites – the pictographs and petroglyphs left by ancient peoples – as we raft down the river, go rock climbing not far from Moab and learn from our professional, certified climbing guides, and hike the magnificent Arches National Park. We’ll also do a tour of Moab and stop at the popular Moab Brewery for local pub fare. (The April edition of Sunset Magazine had a nice feature on Moab and all the wonderful things to do there, including a section about the Moab Brewery.) The river and campsites are beautiful, and the food will be bountiful – a luxurious trip with exciting elements that few get to experience. Just $450/person for an unforgettable week. Sign up by July 15. Call Outdoor Recreation at 556-4867.

Note: To get you ready for any rock climb-ing you’ll want to do on this trip, Outdoor Recreation will offer a Rock Out! Beginner Outdoor Rock Climbing Class, July 21. Sign up for the classes at least 48 hours in advance. Call 556-4867.

have the special training required to fight a fire of this nature. “Since 2009, together with Fort Carson Fire Department, we have sponsored and coordinated the Pikes Peak Regional Wildfire Academy. This is a training academy open to ci-vilian and federal agencies as an opportunity to train with neighboring fire departments,” Soliz said.

As a result, CMFES has the most Red Card certified firefighters of any Air Force fire department in the Front Range. Red Card is a certification required to fight wild land fires.

In addition to providing assistance with the Waldo Canyon fire on June 23, the CMFES was backfilling CSFD Station 16 in the Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhood. “CMFES fire-fighters responded to a separate wildfire near Gold Camp Road,” Soliz said.

That fire was quickly put out, but the fire in Waldo Canyon continued to grow. The next day, CMFES provided a crew of

seven firefighters to work with two firefighters from the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Colorado Springs Fire Mitigation Team. Together they battled the flames for 12 hours.

As the fire continued to grow, support from other agencies, including Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems-equipped C-130s from the 153rd and 302nd Airlift Wings, started to pour in and the CMFES began focusing their help on backfilling the CSFD stations. “Our firefighters are happy to help in any way and have gained invaluable experience from tragic circumstances,” Soliz said. “Other responses while staffing Station 7 have been vehicle accidents, emergency medical conditions, a fire from an electric transformer, and several others.”

The CMFES is averaging 10 to 12 responses a day while supporting the CSFD.

According to Cindy Litteral, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron fire department deputy chief, the primary function of the Peterson fire department has also been backfilling fire sta-tions within the community and at the Academy. “We’ve been at the Academy helping backfill so they can take care of business,” she said. The Peterson Fire Department also supplied a fire truck to the CMFES for aid.

Additionally, the 21st SW provided shelter for 101 Civil Air Patrol cadets overnight after they were evacuated from the Academy on June 26.

The 21st Medical Group jumped in to help the Academy’s 10th MDG by dispensing 1,000 prescriptions to patients normally assigned to the Academy’s clinic.

A refueling truck from the 21st SW was sent to the Academy to fill equipment. The 21st CES provided a bulldozer to CE professionals on the Academy to allow further fire mitiga-tion on the installation, as well as a pumper truck to aid in fire suppression.

Base officials also assembled more than 240 families who volunteered to house approximately 995 military evacuees, if needed.

“The 21st Space Wing is stepping up to help all agencies in the herculean effort of combating the Waldo Canyon wild-fire,” said Col. Chris Crawford, 21st SW commander. “We have exhaustive plans in place to support local, state and na-tional organizations where necessary and when needed.”

Department about the left-turn lanes from Powers Boulevard onto Airport Road. They have adjusted the signal timing at the intersection, increasing the time for southbound traffic to turn left onto Airport Road and for eastbound Airport Road traffic to cross Powers Boulevard. We will continue to work with the city to refine the timing during the course of the project.

One suggestion we cannot implement at the west gate is changing Airport Road east of Powers Boulevard to two lanes of inbound traffic. Airport Road is a city street that provides access to El Paso County offices as well as commercial busi-nesses. Airport Road provides the only access to southbound Powers Boulevard from these locations. Also, traffic engi-neering studies have found that drivers are less confused if traffic patterns remain constant; they are less likely to be hesitant or make mistakes that cause accidents.

Traffic at the east gate may back up onto Marksheffel Road each morning as well, leading to a suggestion to open all four lanes at the east gate to inbound traffic. Although opening the two additional partial lengths of the outbound lanes

at the east gate would allow vehicles to queue away from Marksheffel Road, the four inbound lanes then converge onto East Stewart Avenue. This would create a situation where up to four vehicles will try to enter traffic without a clear right-of-way, resulting in an inherently unsafe situa-tion. In addition, the personnel that would be required to manage the traffic on a daily basis would put additional stress on available resources. The situation would also put those personnel at risk on the roadway without significantly increasing the rate of traffic moving through the gate.

Another recommendation made was to extend the contrac-tor’s work hours so construction could be completed faster. Unfortunately, we are unable to have the contractor work extended hours due to overtime labor rates, which are not budgeted or funded under the construction contract.

One way Team Pete organizations can help reduce the traffic burden is to implement staggered reporting times for their personnel. This option is open to commanders and supervisors, but is not mandated as each unit must determine how it affects mission requirements.

We know the frustrations the traffic congestion has caused and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue our efforts to make Peterson AFB the best place to work, live and visit in the Air Force.
