Spearfish Economic Indicators
Ah Summer is finally here...or so we hope! A time of year when things begin to stir with activity. Gardens, tour-ists, cement trucks, and yes, mosquitoes. Summer is an event that many of us long for in the short days of January, in anticipation of blooming flowers, late night sunsets and family barbeques. Just as mother nature comes out of hi-bernation and breathes new life into our landscapes, so does a large segment of our economy. In one short drive around Spearfish or throughout the Black Hills, one can see a flurry of activity by multi-colored objects, buzzing and scurrying around the area, mostly yellow and black in color. No, not bees, but like colored construction equipment such as backhoes, graders, and pay loaders. These oversize bees, of the large scale vari-ety, are busily building our “hives” of the future. Several commercial construction projects are ongoing in the area, with several others to commence in the very near future. Projects such as the Spearfish Hospital expansion and the new BHSU Alumni Center are racing toward their com-pletion. As the exterior construction moves forward, interior construction and finishing work will be commencing in the upcoming weeks and months. The construction of the new Creekside Apartment de-velopment, which started in March, is also moving full-speed ahead. Located north of Creekside Elementary, the 60-unit apartment complex will feature one, two and three bedroom dwellings and is tentatively scheduled to be com-pleted by the Fall of 2014. Other commercial projects currently under construction include the new addition to the Northern Hills Training
Center; a new retail complex located at the intersection of Colorado Blvd. and Maitland Road; a new 12,000 SF train-ing facility for the Spearfish Gymnastics Academy; and new shop/office space for Peterson Excavation. Together, these projects represent nearly $11 million of new invest-ment within the community and have greatly contributed to the record level of construction activities which Spearfish has experienced thus far in 2014. Historically, the construction trades have always played a major role in supporting our local economy. An active construction industry means good paying jobs for our young people, added tax base, and a physiological boost from something new and exciting happening in our community. Yes, the road to prosperity is always under construc-tion and we all thrive when the “bees” are busy building our future “hives”.
The state’s economy continues to grow at a faster rate than the national economy, according to the most recent gross domestic product (GDP) figures released by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce. South Dakota’s GDP grew 6.8% from 2012 to 2013 compared to a 3.7% growth nationally. This increase was fourth highest in the nation, trailing only North Dakota, Wyoming and Idaho. Leading business sectors included; agriculture, banking and healthcare services.
