Homecoming: A Great Way to Celebrate Fall

Nothing says Fall like Homecoming! It means face-painting, tailgating, community parades and Homecom-ing Kings, Queens and Courts.

October is a big month for Home-coming. Bay Village and Avon did it up right last weekend with parades and football pre-game ceremonies that celebrated this staple of commu-nity values.

A week earlier, Avon Lake was home-coming capital, and Westlake got things rolling the last week of Sep-tember with its annual parade and football pre-game ceremonies.

Exciting baseball play-offs – even though it isn’t our Indians; the Cleveland Browns holding their own and playing some intense games and a very interest-ing season awaiting the Cavaliers. Oh, if only the sports fans were as passion-ate about their oral health as they are about their sports!One common scenario that happens very frequently that my office manager, Joyce, hears, is women who are trying to get their sig-nificant others - boyfriends and husbands to the dentist. (Don’t forget fathers and sons also) The male part of the equation keeps resisting them. Women tell Joyce all the time that their husbands have bad breath and they would love to get them in to see the dentist or that their husbands are in sales and they wish they would get their teeth fixed so that they would look more presentable. We hear it time and time again.

So, rip out this article and give it to your signifi-cant other because now I’m

going to direct the rest of this to the men in your lives.

Look, man, you’ve got bad breath, whether you know it or not. She’s been trying to tell you this for a long time, but she doesn’t have the heart. Your bad breath could be coming from disease, not brushing your teeth or not getting them professionally cleaned often enough, or as new re-search has found, can be re-lated to some systemic dis-eases. Your gum disease in your mouth could also make all kinds of physical prob-lems you have, like diabetes and heart disease worse.

GO SEE THE DEN-TIST! The dentist can help get rid of your bad breath, treat your gum disease, fill those big holes in your mouth that have been pack-ing food, causing more bad breath, and make your en-tire body healthier. Women, if appropriate, feel free to rip out the next paragraph as well for your male partner, if this one applies.

Look, man, your teeth

are yellow and they don’t look nice. You are around people all day who judge you by the way you look. You are in sales or manage-ment and your teeth are embarrassing. When you go to parties, she cringes at the way people’s faces change when you smile and you show those less than desir-able looking teeth.

GO GET THEM FIXED. Dental procedures like whitening and veneers are minimally invasive ways to get a good looking smile with very little need for shots or drilling. Get them fixed and you won’t be sur-prised when you become the social butterflies that she has always wanted you to be.

Keep in mind, most of you have dental insurance that you never use. You’ve worked hard for that benefit, but you’ve been throwing

money away by not taking advantage of the savings. Es-pecially at this time of year, it is wise to utilize your den-tal benefits before the end of the year. We know you’re busy with meetings, travel-ing, and your kid’s activities. Why not try to carve just a little time out for yourself to address your dental needs? Trust me, a nice smile will be one of the greatest pres-ents you could give to the woman in your life. Think about how much more kiss-able you will be for her!

Bay Village celebrates homecoming each fall with a traditional parade from Cahoon Park to the high school. Last Friday’s annual parade was held in fine style, with par-ticipants enjoying great autumn weather. Bay’s homecom-ing court occupied the lead cars, featuring Noah Hitchcock, Allison Finley, Katherine Koomar (Queen), Christopher Allison (King), Lea Flanagan and Arif Caushaj.

Bay Mayor Debbie Sutherland, a Bay High grad, greet-ed well-wishers along the way. The Bay High Marching Band offered rousing music, and many Bay Village civic community groups took part as residents lined the way with smiles, a few bonfires and plenty of home-town fun.

Homecoming 2014 was celebrated in fine style in Avon last week as fes-tivities were culminated with the crowning of King Drew Dudukovich and Queen Alexandria Darus before Friday’s football game against North Rid-geville.

The seniors took the field together as attendants and were then surprised with the great news that they were now homecoming royalty.

Homecoming Court is a big event in Avon, a point of community pride and unity. Named to this year’s homecoming court were freshmen attendants Claudia Hermann and Cole Bramhall, sophomore attendants Gabrielle Laboy and William Kocar, junior attendants Erin Conn and Alex Rimko, senior JVS Attendants Alyssa Tabar and Jerimias Fuentes, and senior attendants Cassidy Clark and Cory Ohradznsky, Katie Shusta and Wes Ford, Samantha Saghy and Charlie Erlenbach as well as Nicole Hubbard and Ryan Sikora.

The event signified months of work by the high school community that pulled together to create a week of memorable events. Some great memories were created indeed, especially for Drew and Alexandria, who were very ex-cited to not only be named to the court but crowned King and Queen.

Avon Gridders Make it a Happy Homecoming

The Avon High football team made it a happy homecoming Friday night with a 56-21 win over visiting North Ridgeville. Running back Sonny Cooper had a big game with 20 carries for 79 yards and 4 rushing TDs. Bruising full-back Isaiah Pinto also added a couple of scores on the ground.

Avon’s defense was credited for limiting star North Ridgeville running back Demario McCall to 146 yards. Most of McCall’s damage came on one 73-yard run in the first quarter. Quarterback Jake Sopko added 224 yards passing while Zack Torbert had three catches plus a TD. Special teams ace Alex Rimko played a key role as the Eagles designated guided missile. He re-covered two fumbles to set up a pair of scoring drives. Avon improves to 5-1.

Learn about life in early Dover Township at a tour of Lakeside Cemetery on Oct. 26, planned in co-operation by the Bay Vil-lage Historical Society and Huntington Playhouse.

Tours will depart at regular intervals from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at both Huntington Playhouse and Lakeside Cemetery. Partici-pants will get a brief history of Huntington Playhouse and a backstage tour. Seven actors will be at Lakeside Cemetery, where they will relate the intriguing stories of seven individuals buried in the cemetery. The his-toric cemetery is the site of the first burial in what was then Dover Township, 200 years ago.

Admission is free. Parking is at the west end

Lakeside Cemetery Tourof Huntington Park and at Huntington Playhouse. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. Rose Hill Museum, located in nearby Cahoon Memorial Park and oper-ated by the Bay Village Historical Society, will be closed on Oct. 26. The museum will reopen the following Sunday with its regular hours, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and will be open every Sunday through De-cember.

Bay Village Lacrosse Association (BVLA) will sponsor its third annual “Football Watch Party” fundraiser featur-ing the Ohio State vs. Penn State game on Saturday, Oc-tober 25th from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at the Copper Cup, 680 Dover Center Road in Westlake. In addition to the OSU game, there will be a live feed to a local high school foot-ball game. Ticket cost for the adult only BVLA “Football Watch Party” is $30 per person. Price includes beverages and heavy appetizers.

Event proceeds benefit BVLA to help fund the group’s capital equipment drive. The “Watch Party” will include a silent auction and a raffle. Door prizes will also be given out during the game.

Bay Village Lacrosse Association was founded to initi-ate and support student lacrosse programs throughout the community. BVLA currently offers lacrosse programs to students in third- through-eighth grades and actively sup-ports the high school programs.
