Era antes de la fiesta de la Pascua, y Jesús sabía que había llegado la hora de que él dejaraeste mundo para ir a reunirse con el Padre. Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to departfrom this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. THE WASHING OF FEET The Rev. Canon Anthony Guillén Fellow servants of our Lord Jesus Christ: on the night before his death,

Jesus set an example for his disciples by washing their feet, an act of humble service. He taught that strength and growth in the life of the kingdom of God come not by power, authority, or even miracle, but by such lowly service. In obedience to our Lord’s example, I invite you, the Body of Christ, to come forward as an act of love and humility. Following the washing of your feet, you are asked to wash the feet of the next person.Come to the chapel to have your feet washed. Please be prepared to remove your socks and shoes.

ANTHEM I give you a new commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.” The Lord Jesus, when he had eaten with his disciples, poured water into a basin and began to wash their feet, saying, “This example I leave you. el pueblo permanece de pie o se arrodilla. Celebrante Padre Santo y bondadoso: En tu amor infinito nos hiciste para ti,

y cuando caímos en pecado y quedamos esclavos del mal y de la muerte, tú, en tu misericordia, enviaste a Jesucristo, tu Hijo único y eterno, para compartir nuestra naturaleza humana, para vivir y morir como uno de nosotros, y así reconciliarnos contigo, el Dios y Padre de todos. Extendió sus brazos sobre la cruz y se ofreció en obediencia a tu voluntad, un sacrificio perfecto por todo el mundo.

to the Altar of Repose in the Chapel, which represents for us this night the garden of Gethsamane where Jesus asks all his disciples to wait and watch with him. All persons are invited to keep vigil, meditating on the wonder and power of the Real Presence of Christ among us.

The TriduumThe Triduum (“three days”) is the most focused period of devotion in the church’s life. Stretching from the eve before Good Friday through Easter Day, these three days remember and celebrate the last events of Jesus’ ministry, ponder the meaning of his crucifixion, and celebrate the dawning of new life in Christ’s resurrection. They contain the lowest lows and highest highs of our liturgical expression, and they frame and inform every other celebration on the church’s calendar.

Maundy ThursdayTonight we remember and celebrate the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples, and the instruction he gave them to love and serve one another. We do this first by washing one another’s feet (Old English Maundy, from Latin mandatum or “commandment”—“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” [John 13:34]). We then festively celebrate the Eucharist, the meal that illustrates Christ’s presence among us and grounds our entire life together. Finally we prepare the church for Good Friday by stripping the Altar and church of all its adornments, and reserving the consecrated bread and wine for Good Friday—the one day in the church year when we do not celebrate the Eucharist, but instead share bread and wine consecrated at tonight’s celebration. An all-night vigil allows us to “watch and pray” with Jesus in Gethsemane.
