In last week’s edition of this paper there was a story about the Jeremy Staat Foundation and their ride across the country to focus attention on the plight of veterans of the U. S. military. Mr. Staat and some of his entourage were in attendance at the weekly meeting and luncheon of the Shamrock Booster Club and gave us a short account of what they were doing and where they were going. A bicycle trip from Bakersfield, California, to Washington, DC, a one hundred day trip of over 4200 miles, arriving in DC on Memorial Day weekend, is their method of accomplishing this goal. I had occasion to sit down with these gentlemen on Wednesday afternoon for a conversation. The dedication and positive attitude exhibited by these veterans is a rarity. Wesley Barrientos, the victim of a roadside bomb in Iraq, lost both his legs but is one of the most upbeat people I have ever met. Everything is amusing to him and his approach to life is something to be admired and envied. In re- sponse to my question, he stated that his primary criticism of his care by the Veteran’s Administration was that the employees and staff were pretty indifferent. Whether you received the proper treat- ment was not a matter of avail- ability, but a matter of the lack of urgency or assurance that you would receive that treatment. Jeremy Staat, the origina- tor and leader of the group is a unique individual. A former NFL player and an ex-Marine, he has experienced more of the world and more of life than most people of his relatively young age. He does not suffer from war related injuries, but his concern for those who have is very evident and a real part of his motivation. In an era when veterans are more ignored and vilified than re- spected and revered, it is a rotten shame that our federal government leaves the advocacy for these heroes up to individuals and organiza- tions such as this group. With all the attention that is given to sup- plying every want and need of every lowlife and leech attached to the social welfare systems, you would think that veterans would be more in the spotlight and their welfare would be more of a priority than those who have never made any kind of contribution to society. My hope for the Jeremy Staat Foundation is that their every dream will come true, that their efforts will achieve the desired result, and that their journey will be safe. After my visit, I believe that success is pretty much a given. It is highly unusual to find this sort of commitment and dedication to any cause when there is no potential for personal gain and where greed plays no part. It was an inspirational occasion. My hat is off to them. A few days ago, I heard Louis Armstrong on the radio offering his trademark rendition of “It’s a Wonderful World”. I couldn’t help but agree and ponder how much more wonderful it could be with our assistance. Just something to think about. Horse tests positive for rabies in Lamb County This case is the 5th case for HSR1 this year and the first case for Lamb County. The last case confirmed prior to this one in Lamb County was a dog reported on September 21, 2011. In addition to that case, a skunk was also confirmed rabid in July 2011 in Lamb County. This is the first rabid horse reported in HSR 1 this year. Last year, 5 horses were reported which was well above average for the area. It is recommend that veterinar- ians and Agri-Life agents remind horse owners to keep their horses current on their rabies and en- cephalitis vaccinations. If you have horses that are used frequently, especially by children, be sure to keep them current on rabies vaccinations for the protection of the animal (this horse was quite valuable) and the people. As is typical with a case of rabies in a horse, multiple people have been exposed to this animal. As always, it is recommend that show animals also be vac- cinated due to the amount of hu- man contact they have. The following are the results for the HSR1 cases reported: Lamb County 1 horse Parmer County 2 skunks Potter County 1 cat Randall County 1 skunk Total: 3 skunks, 1 cat and 1 horse in 4 counties.
