Dear School Community,

Ms Nielsen, Mr McCoombe and I attended the Positive Schools Conference last week. This

annual conference focuses on how schools can build safe and respectful relationships, create

and nurture wellbeing and develop a healthier school culture for every community member.

The speakers and workshops are internationally acclaimed. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, Eddie

Woo, Dr Rick Stevenson and Richard Gerver are a small sample of presenters. It was the

keynote presentation from Susan McLean that I wish to share with our families. Susan has

spent the last 22 years sharing her stories, knowledge and expertise to keep kids cyber safe.

Below is my learning from Susan’s session that may assist families when working with their

children:

By the age of 11, the majority of boys have had multiple exposures to Pornographic images

and clips

YouTube is one of the most popular platforms for primary age children and 90% of 9 year

old children have had exposure to ‘inappropriate’ material on YouTube

The internet minute – it is staggering to see the snapshot of what happens on the internet

in a minute

Primary aged children don’t know life without technology or a ‘device’ free world

Devices and technology are here to stay so adults need to learn to embrace ‘it’ with a

balance

Families are advised to develop their technology (device) agreements underpinned by the

3 R’s – Respect, Responsibility and Reputation

Children should never be allowed to take their device into their bedroom or bathroom

Families are often are not aware of the impact technology and devices have on their

children’s quality of sleep – quality sleep is the only time our body and mind ‘repairs’

52% of requests for nude photos comes from someone they don’t know

If kids perceive you don’t like technology, they will never come to you when they have a

problem online

Kids will make mistakes on technology – don’t ignore these mistakes, but education and

forgiveness is the best response

“Parents need to parent” – it is OK to insist our children have a balance with socialisation

by providing opportunities to “play at the original Playstation”

Student Learning – Swimming: Our Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 students will commence

their annual swimming program at the Geelong Aquatic Centre from Monday. The program

is an essential part of our Physical Education program that nurtures key swimming and safety

skills. Thank you in advance to our families for ensuring their child has all the correct

swimming attire ready each day.

Child Safe Standards: All Victorian government schools are child safe environments. Our

school actively promotes the safety and wellbeing of all students, and all of our staff are

committed to protecting students from abuse or harm in the school environment, in

accordance with their legal obligations including child safe standards. Like all school,

Bellbrae PS, has a Child Safety Code of Conduct consistent with the Department’s

expectations. These are available on the school’s website. The Child Safe Standards are

Victoria’s approach to ensuring a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse. For schools, the

Child Safe Standards will ensure that proactive systems and processes are in place to prevent

and respond to child abuse. They are:

Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety, including through effective

leadership arrangements

A child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety

A code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with

children

Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk

of child abuse by new and existing personnel

Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse

Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse

Strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children

Bus Safety: I recently heard from a concerned community member on the unsafe behaviours

of some of our bus travellers. This includes bus travellers playing ball games whilst waiting

for their bus each morning. This has led to balls on the road and the associated risks. I

encourage parents to reinforce that balls should be stored in their school bag whilst waiting

for the bus. We will remind students again at our assembly on Friday.

3 Bellbrae Primary School Annual Principal Conference: I, along with Mr McCoombe and all principals across the

state, are presently attending the Principal Conference focussed on Leading Excellence in

Teaching and Learning. Our keynote speakers have been Professor Tony Townsend, Charles

Leadbeater, Dr John Hattie and Dr Barbara Blackburn. These international delegates have

shared with us their perspectives on how we as school leaders can lead our community to

better engage our students and maximise outcomes for all students. We engaged in workshops

focussed on ‘Student Voice, Agency and Leadership’, ‘Engaging students with mathematics’,

as well as ‘Parent engagement and leadership’. We also participated in smaller workshops

looking at the local context. Mr McCoombe and I will share our learning and ideas with staff

over the coming weeks.

Thank you for supporting our school and have a great long weekend.

SPORT NEWS

BELLARINE DIVISION CROSS COUNTRY

Last Tuesday Bellbrae had 18 students compete at the Bellarine Division Cross Country. This

is an amazing achievement considering our sports district, City to Surf comprising of 6

schools, sent 48. Team Bellbrae consisted of Remy Filer, Jed Coupar, Archer Ryan, Harry

Price, Thomas Pfeffer, Emilia Bennett, Alia Brotchie, Scarlotte Benney, Xavier Collins,

Charles Edmonds-Wilson, Van Rahilly, Olivia Bradshaw, Nelly Garnett, Isla Huppatz, Eady

Sims, Jarrah Garnett, Zach Meynink, Conor Fitzgerald.

It was so pleasing to see all of these students give 110%, display sportsmanship and true

comradery, one students willingly stopping to help a Bellbrae mate along the way, despite the

fact this meant he dropped back in the field of runner.

Out of these 18 students, Bellbrae had twelve finish in the top 12 places of their event and

will now progress to the Western Metropolitan Region Cross Country at Brimbank Park.

Well done Emilia Bennett 4th, Alia Brotchie 9th, Remy Filer 4th Thomas Pfeffer 9th, Olivia

Bradshaw 8th, Nelly Garnett 9th, Xavier Collins 3rd, Charles Edmonds-Wilson 10th, Eady Sims

7th, Isla Huppatz 12th, Conor Fitzgerald 5th and Jarrah Garnett 6th. We wish you all the best

at Regionals.

CITY TO SURF WINTER LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIP

After terrible conditions saw the Winter LP being called off on Monday, the event has been

rescheduled and will take place tomorrow, 7th June. As advised in the original note, can

sensible, warm clothing with a change of clothes and have adequate food and drinks for the

day. Football and soccer players are advised to wear football boots, mouth guards and shin

guard (soccer only).

Parents are welcome to come and watch the events throughout the day.

Netball – Geelong Netball Basketball Centre, South Geelong, Soccer - Estuary Reserve

Leopold, and Football, South Barwon Reserve, Barwon Heads Rd, Belmont.

Thank you to those parents that are available to help coach on the day, Courtney Rayner,

Kerry Borg, Simone Marshall and Jen Jury - your assistance is greatly appreciated.

WRITING HOT!

We have another fantastic piece of writing for you this week. It has been brilliant to see the

excellent standard of writing developing in all year levels at Bellbrae Primary School. A big

congratulations to all of our teachers and students for continuing to work towards their

learning goals. Harlem Pec from Foundation B is our writing hot author this week. He

writes;

I went to the ferry to go to the other side of the world. We went to go there because it was

my Nan’s birthday. We went with my cousin Benj. We went to go on the ferry and we hopped

in the water. The second time we saw a massive jellyfish. Wow! It was a massive one!

Mrs Rudland and her class have been learning so many new

things in their writing sessions this year. She is proud of the

way that her students are writing independently and listening

for sounds in the words that they write. She also is impressed

by their creativity and descriptive language.

Are the sentences in this piece clear and easy to understand?

Does this idea tell you about a weekend adventure?

We think it does. That is why this piece is going onto our

Bellbrae Writers’ Wall of Fame.

You can check out Harlem’s piece there.

Well done, guys!
