Significant Weather Features

♦ The Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation at 3.1 km above mean sea level lies over East Iran & adjoining Afghanistan with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level runs roughly along Long. 62.0°E to the north of 25.0°N. Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rain/snow and thunderstorm/hailstorm very likely over Jammu & Kashmir on 21st & 22nd November and over Himachal Pradesh on 22nd November.

♦ Another Western Disturbance is seen as as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 52.0°E to the north of 28.0°N. This is likely to affect Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains from the night of 25th November.

♦ Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls very likely over Kerala and Lakshadweep on 21st and over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 22nd November. Thunderstorm with lightning at isolated places also likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep during next 48 hours.

♦ Moderate to dense fog at isolated pockets over northeast India during next 2 days and shallow to moderate fog for subsequent 48 hours. Shallow to moderate fog at isolated pockets likely Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh during next 24 hours and over Bihar, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during next 48 hours.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rain/Thundershowers observed (from 0830 hours IST of yesterday to 0830 hours IST of today): at most place over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala; at a few places over South Interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Rayalaseema, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Assam & Meghalaya.

♦ Rainfall recorded at 0830 hours IST of today (1 cm or more) are: Kottayam-5; Numgambakkam and Periakulum-4 each; Kodaikanal, Coonoor, M.O Karipur Airport, Kochin and Car Nicobar-2 each; Bangalore, Cannur, Kozhikode and Thiruvanathapuram-1 each.

♦ Thunderstorm observed (from 0830 hours to 1430 hours IST of today): at isolated places over Kerala & Mahe.

♦ Maximum Temperature Departures as on 20-11-2019: Maximum temperatures were appreciable above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at isolate places over Kerala & Mahe; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka; at a few places over Vidarbha, Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Chhattisgarh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. They were appreciable below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir and at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over Bihar and at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Assam & Meghalaya and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 37.6°C was recorded at Karwar (Coastal Karnataka).

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures as on 21-11-2019: Minimum temperatures are appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at many place over Andaman & Nicobar Islands; at a few places over Jammu & Kashmir and Madhya Maharashtra and at isolated places over West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Rayalaseema; at many places over Konkan & Goa, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka; at a few places over North Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Assam & Meghalaya and at isolated places over East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat Region, Lakshadweep, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim.They are appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at a few places over Saurashtra & Kutch and at isolated places over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal and near normal over rest parts of the country. Today, the lowest minimum temperature of 9.1°C recorded at Ludhiana (Punjab) over plains of the country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 1430 hours IST)

♦ The Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over East Iran & adjoining Afghanistan at 3.1 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 62.0°E to the north of 25.0°N persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Punjab & neighbourhood between 1.5 km & 2.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The Western Disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 52.0°E to the north of 28.0°N persists.

♦ The trough from Maldives area to south Karnataka coast extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over East Bangladesh & neighbourhood extending upto 3.6 km above mean sea level.

♦ Rise in minimum temperature by 2-3°C very likely over parts of northwest India during next 24 hours and no significant change for subsequent 48 hours. No significant change in minimum temperatures over rest of the country during next 3-4 days.

♦ Moderate to dense fog at isolated pockets over northeast India during next 2 days and shallow to moderate fog for subsequent 48 hours.
