13.00h Welcome

13.20h Good-better-best: LCA-EPD-labels. Where, how an when to use? Differences? Value? Peter Thoelen, natureplus board member and director VIBE, Antwerp (BE - Nederlands) A part of the industry would rather promote environmental product declarations (EPD’s) instead of Type I labels. What is the different value of both instruments? Why are they both useful and under which circumstances? What’s the value of natureplus?

14.20h Natureplus in building certification tools: example be.refLiesbet Temmerman, architect CERAA (Centre d’Etude, de Recherche et d’Action en Architecture), Brussels (BE - Français)How are building materials evaluated in the be-ref tool which will be used by the BSBC (Belgian Sustainable Building Council)? How are Type I labels integrated and what is the weight of natureplus?

13.40h Natureplus in subsidies and building regulations: Austrian exampleHildegund Mötzl, Director and Researcher IBO (Österreichisches Institut für Bauen und Ökologie), Vienna (AT - Deutsch) How is natureplus integrated in the Vorarlberg building regu- lations? Why did they choose for natureplus? How successful is it?

14.40h Natureplus in Britain: possibilities and difficultiesGary Newman & Graham Hilton, ASBP, London (UK - English)How does the British Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP) would like to use natureplus amongst other tools? How to deal with existing (well-known) tools like BREAAM, BRE Environmental profiles etc.?

14.00h Natureplus in sustainable public procurement (SPP): Belgian exampleJo Versteven, responsible for SPP at the Belgian Public Service for Sustainable Development (BE - Nederlands)How does the Belgian Public Service uses natureplus in their tool to promote sustainable public procurement? Why did they choose for natureplus? Who uses the tool and how successful is it?

Thursday 16th of May, 13.00h - 17.00h Labeled natural building materials in specifications, subsidies and other official tools

EPD’s, LCA’s, building evaluation tools, building product calculators… can you keep track? A label is an easy way to recognize a building product with high standards. The independent label ‘natureplus’ has developed ambitious standards on environmental performance and health issues. What does it test? How is it applied in existing public procurement systems and subsidies? How can you use it correctly in tendering documents, specifications, subsidies, etc.? How do architects make use of it in designing buildings? What is the EU policy on type I labels?

Main target groups

* The broad range of specification writers (architects, project developers, tenderers…)

Friday 17th of May, 9.30h - 17.00h LCA practice and issues

CAP’EM (cycle assesment procedure for eco-materials) developed an international LCA calculation tool. Within this Interreg IVB project, more than 100 ‘eco’ building materials where calculated. At this conference, the results, expressed in ILCD impact categories, will be shown for the first time. But we’ll also take the time to examine some difficult LCA-questions, explain different tools and results, and give practical examples with different tools.Main target groups * LCA-practitioners and –addicts, scientific institutions

* Architects, engineering offices, specifications writers

* Local and other authorities * Subsidizing authorities

* Federations and companies from the building sector, building contractors…

Main conference language: English

Be.global: adding LCA-data to the Passivehouse calculator PHPP: examples & future developmentsEmanuelle Rota, PMP (Plateforme Maison Passif), NamurThe PHPP software calculates and evaluates energy performances for

the construction of passive buildings. The Belgian PMP developed an

accompanying tool, adding energy related impacts of different building

materials to it. How does this work? Which LCA databases are used?

What could CAP’EM add to it?

Where did the carbon go? How LCA methods can hide a multi-tude of sins… Dr. Andrew Norton, Director Renuables, Llanllechid (UK)Carbon sequestration or carbon uptake is a tricky question amongst

LCA-scolars for many years now. In some methods, it is calculated, in

some it is not. In others, it has been taken into account once, but dis-

appeared in later versions. Why? Who is gaining or losing what? How

do the scientists think it should be calculated?

NIBE: environmental information on building products: methodology and examples.Rick Scholtes, advisor NIBE - Nederlands Instituut voor Bouw-biologie en Ecologie (Nl)NIBE’s ‘classification’ of building products is based on LCA-calculations

and is widely used in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is updated

regularly, showing interesting differences in results. How to interpret

these differences and how to make decisions, based on a changing

classification?

What about benefits and loads beyond a building product’s life cycle? Relevance and difficulties of incorporating Module D Wim Debacker (VITO) and Lisa Wastiels (WTCB) According to the European standard EN 15804 Module D allows

crediting a product or building for the recycling or reuse potential of

its materials or the exported energy. This module is rather controver-

sial amongst LCA practitioners and has been excluded from most LCA

studies so far.

What is the added value and what are the risks and difficulties of

incorporating module D in an LCA? Finally, the relevance of Module D is

studied on building level through a practical case.

Allocation methods and/or system expansion in LCA methods.Guillaume Georgeton, Researcher Technological University of Troyes (FR) Which methods to perform allocations in LCA-calculations: mass, eco-

nomic…? Which differences appear in results? With applied examples

for flax, hemp and miscanthus.
