LEADERSNEWS Once again our Strawberry Fair was an amazing success, and comments have mentioned the calm, relaxed feel of the day. We have taken over $60,000 and profit should be close to $26,000. The message this year was to enjoy and celebrate the community links rather than aiming for record profit, and I really do believe we achieved that. Special thanks to Rachel, Chris and Simone, Jen and Judy, and the team of committed members. Council met this week and have requested money raised be spent on school improvements of benefit to the community, which includes a drinking fountain (bubbler) and planting in the Nature Play space as well as improved Sporting facilities. We discussed the need for a new corner sign, and school funds will enable a fresh, new look electronic sign to be sourced. Cancer SA have confirmed they are attending Assembly this week acknowledging our Sun Smart commitment. Kate Freebairn from Channel 10 News will present the weather report from our school next Monday, and our OSHC students will promote our sun safety procedures. EPS has been accepted as a Bike Ed. School next year, and our 2019 Year 4 and 5 students will have free bike care and safety lessons in Term 1. If you have a student in these year levels you may like to include a new bike helmet on the Christmas wish list. More details will follow. Our BYO Laptop meeting is being held TONIGHT (Thursday, 15 th November) for families of Year 5-7 students in 2019. We will be asking all families to provide head phones for each student from next year, and the school will have some available for sale from the uniform shop. This week has also been the start of our transition program for next year’s Reception students. We have 65 new Receptions starting and they have visited over two days. It is an exciting time for these new children as they begin their primary school experience. There are still several spaces available in Reception if you know of any families still wanting to enrol into our school. Edwardstown Primary School recognised as SunSmart program founding member To celebrate National Skin Cancer Action Week (18-24 November), Cancer Council SA has recognised Edwardstown Primary School as one of the 70 founding members of the SunSmart Schools and Early Childhood Program, who are still current members today. The program, which was introduced into South Australian schools in 1998, now operates in over 800 schools, early childhood centres and OSHC services across the state and protects more than 114,000 South Australian children and their educators from overexposure to UV radiation. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, yet it’s also a highly preventable disease. Melanoma is the most common cancer in Australians aged 12-24 years, and sun exposure during childhood and adolescence a critical determinant of future skin cancer risk. As a committed member of the SunSmart program, EPS is proud of the role we play in teaching and supporting life-long protection habits that will have a positive impact on our community, and we thank you for your support in making this possible. To learn more about what’s involved as part of our commitment to the program, you can visit Cancer Council SA’s webpage www.sunsmart.org.au.
