I cant believe this is the final newsleer for this year. How quickly this year has flown! It has been a year in which we have seen our community flourish, with students joining our school throughout the year, and a building program that, in spite of the logiscal difficules we have had to manage, reflects the growth of the school and our vision to provide the best teaching and learning environment possible for our students. During the year our whole community, students and staff, have experienced so many opportunies to learn and to grow, embracing new challenges, bouncing back from disappointments and striving to be the best we can be. Our NAPLAN results have demonstrated the progress students are making, and there have been opportunies to enter compeons in Poetry Wring, Digital Literacy, Mathemacs and STEM to name a few. In addion to a focus on learning and the pursuit of excellence, we have seen students represent the school and excel in sporng fields, on the stage and in their musical accomplishments. Students have demonstrated their compassion, kindness and care for others through the Learning Assistance Program, raising money for charity and supporng local community events. It was wonderful to celebrate these, and so many other achievements, in our End of Year Liturgy last week. Our theme this year has been Peace be with you’, a call to wellbeing and wholeness. At this me of year, we might reflect again on what this means; being able to let go of hurts we have felt or caused, and being at peace with the present, accepng that experiences can be uncertain and challenging. I believe this greeng is also an invitaon to be hopeful for the future and to connue to live the Gospel values that we learn through our faith and the Catholic Tradion underpinning all that we do at St Josephs school. In this final newsleer, I take this opportunity to thank and farewell staff leaving our community for new adventures: Olivia Northeast, Georgia Hext, Andre Pearson, Sue Schilling, Kody Rosalia, Asha Edwards and Hannah Pycroſt. We also farewell Teresa Cragg-Sapsford as she takes leave for a year to pursue her passion for further study. To these, and all our hardworking and dedicated staff, I express my hearelt appreciaon. I also thank you, our parents and students, for the many ways in which you have supported us and been so acvely involved throughout the year. In closing Id also like to congratulate Emma Waters, whose work Ocean Chaoshas been selected for the Schools Acquision Prize. Emmas bright and thought-provoking work reflects her passion for the environment and its sustainability. Christmas is a me of hope and new beginnings, a me to remember the greatest giſt of all, that of Jesus to the world. May we connue over this holy season and summer holiday to think and act in the image of Jesus, share the wonder of the Christ Child as an infant, and live the values of the Gospel. I can’t believe this is the final newsletter for this year. How quickly this year has flown!

It has been a year in which we have seen our community flourish, with students joining our school throughout the year, and a building program that, in spite of the logistical difficulties we have had to manage, reflects the growth of the school and our vision to provide the best teaching and learning environment possible for our students.

During the year our whole community, students and staff, have experienced so many opportunities to learn and to grow, embracing new challenges, bouncing back from disappointments and striving to be the best we can be. Our NAPLAN results have demonstrated the progress students are making, and there have been opportunities to enter competitions in Poetry Writing, Digital Literacy, Mathematics and STEM to name a few. In addition to a focus on learning and the pursuit of excellence, we have seen students represent the school and excel in sporting fields, on the stage and in their musical accomplishments. Students have demonstrated their compassion, kindness and care for others through the Learning Assistance Program, raising money for charity and supporting local community events. It was wonderful to celebrate these, and so many other achievements, in our End of Year Liturgy last week.

Our theme this year has been ‘Peace be with you’, a call to wellbeing and wholeness. At this time of year, we might reflect again on what this means; being able to let go of hurts we have felt or caused, and being at peace with the present, accepting that experiences can be uncertain and challenging. I believe this greeting is also an invitation to be hopeful for the future and to continue to live the Gospel values that we learn through our faith and the Catholic Tradition underpinning all that we do at St Joseph’s school.

In this final newsletter, I take this opportunity to thank and farewell staff leaving our community for new adventures: Olivia Northeast, Georgia Hext, Andre Pearson, Sue Schilling, Kody Rosalia, Asha Edwards and Hannah Pycroft. We also farewell Teresa Cragg-Sapsford as she takes leave for a year to pursue her passion for further study. To these, and all our hardworking and dedicated staff, I express my heartfelt appreciation. I also thank you, our parents and students, for the many ways in which you have supported us and been so actively involved throughout the year.

In closing I’d also like to congratulate Emma Waters, whose work ‘Ocean Chaos’ has been selected for the School’s Acquisition Prize. Emma’s bright and thought-provoking work reflects her passion for the environment and its sustainability.

Christmas is a time of hope and new beginnings, a time to remember the greatest gift of all, that of Jesus to the world. May we continue over this holy season and summer holiday to think and act in the image of Jesus, share the wonder of the Christ Child as an infant, and live the values of the Gospel.

I wish you all a safe, happy and holy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all when school returns in January.

All Secondary students should now have received their 2020 subject list via email.

Canteen News As it is the last few days of the term we will not be running a hot special next week, or preparing any extra fresh items for sale. Only lunches ordered through the lunchbox system or online will be prepared. The following items will not be available: cold rolls, fruit salads, salad cups, baked potatoes and flavoured milks.

Lost Property The Front Office ladies are drowning in lost property. If your child has misplaced any items of clothing, drink bottles, toys and/or trinkets etc, please call into the office and check. Please remember to label all items of clothing and belongings in readiness for next year.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal Casual Day Tomorrow (Friday, 6th December), we will be holding our annual Vinnies Christmas Appeal Casual Clothes Day. Students are invited to wear casual clothes with a touch of ‘Christmas’ to school, and bring in donations, such as non-perishable foods, gifts, party supplies and gold coin donations to support the appeal.

We thank you for your continuous support and generous donations and look forward to seeing everyone in their ‘Christmassy’ casual clothes.

SJS Christmas Carols

Next Monday, 9th December the sound of carols will be heard here at St Joe’s at the Christmas Evening. It will be held on the School Oval at 5:30pm and students are invited to dress ‘Christmassy’.

Please see the attached poster for more information.

Principal’s Acquisition Prize It is with pleasure that we announce that Emma Waters is the recipient of the Principal's Acquisition Prize for 2019.

The Principal's Acquisition Prize is where Dr Sandra Hewson and Ms Nicole Russell (Senior Art Teacher) select one piece of work from the 2019 Visual Art and Creative Arts-Photography Exhibition to be purchased for the school. This work will then be proudly hung and displayed within the school. Emma is a Year 11 student who completed Stage 2 (Year 12) Visual Art this year.

We congratulate her on her amazing work and look forward to hanging her beautiful piece, ‘Ocean Chaos’, in the School.

Medication and Health Care Plans

Student Health Care Plans are required for all students who have a medical condition.

The administration of any medication is directed by information provided by a general practitioner and is detailed on the specific health care plan and/or medication authority form, including those for asthma and anaphylaxis management.

It is a legal requirement to have these updated annually, asking your doctor to provide details of best practice relating to first aid treatment of the specific medical condition(s). No medication, including over the counter medication (eg: antibiotics), will be administered by staff without a signed Health Care Plan or Medical Authority Form.

Any student without a current care plan or medication will not be able to attend camps or excursions.

The summer holidays are a good time to have any plans or medication updated. WE STRONGLY DISCOURAGE MEDICATION IN SCHOOL BAGS. NO PANADOL OR NUROFEN CAN BE ADMINISTERED BY SCHOOL STAFF.

Awards Ceremony As well as the prestigious Year 6, 7 and 12 Christian Leadership Awards being presented last Friday at our End of Year Liturgy, we had many other special Community Awards and School Awards presented at the Years 7 - 12 Award Ceremony.

We congratulate all of our Community Award Winners, Dux of each year level from Years 7 – 10, Years 8 – 12 Christian Leadership Awards, Years 7 – 12 Effort & Achievement Awards and our Year 12 Subject Award winners.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our very generous community members and businesses who sponsor our Year 11 and 12 Subject Awards. We couldn't do it without you.

We also thank our Special Guests who came to present our Community Awards to the very worthy recipients. We appreciate the award donation and thank you for giving up your time to join us for the awards or having a representative present.

St Joseph Sculpture Commission We are thrilled to share with you details of a commission we are undertaking with local stone sculptor Marijan Bekic.

A life size sculpture of St Joseph, taking a break from his carpentry to sit with the child Jesus for a moment of learning, will be incorporated into an embracing circle of seating. The design will allow students to interact in the space and combines images of work and learning so appropriate for our school in the spirit of St Joseph and Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

The whole sculpture will be made of local granite and will take most of next year to complete, but hopefully be installed some time in Term 4, 2020. Marijan has amazed us with his grasp of our spirit and community, and we are very excited to be working with him on this installation. The finished work will be an incredible tribute to our patron saint, and a wonderful encapsulation of wellbeing, work and learning.

The small model is pictured below, but the finished work will accommodate a class, and I’m sure will be a popular gathering space at recess and lunch.

Thank you Gavin! This semester the Year 1s and 2s have been looking at our connection to place with a focus on the Port Lincoln Fishing Industry. We have been comparing the past and present commercial fishing methods and technology.

On Friday 29th November, Gavin Myers from Myers Seafoods came in to talk to the children about mussels. We learned how and where mussels grow in Boston Bay, Port Lincoln. We also built our own human mussel farm, which was lots of fun. Gavin showed us how to prepare and cook mussels and we were also lucky enough to taste some of his delicious mussels. We are very grateful for Gavin's generosity - he not only donated his time but he also gave all the students their own pack of mussels and the necessary ingredients and recipe to cook mussels at home with their families.

We thank Gavin for coming in and helping us learn more about Port Lincoln’s Fishing Industry.

Year 12 Graduation The St Joseph’s School Community would like to congratulate our ‘Class of 2019’, who graduated last Saturday.

We would like to also give a big thank you to the Graduation Committee for their enthusiasm and hard work. The venues and decorations looked amazing.

If you would like to view more photos from our Year 12 Graduation, please head to our School Facebook Page.
