WELCOME to the 2019 Rocklyn ram saleDespite another dry season, the hogget sale rams are still well grown. Classing continues to concentrate on plainer bodied, dual purpose sheep with fine to medium wool that have high fertility and good early growth rates. The wool is long stapled, bright, soft handling and well nourished with good crimp definition. This year, we are proud to be able to include the results from the DNA and genomic testing we conducted on the 2018 Rocklyn Stud drop. Full pedigrees have been determined for the 2018 Drop and information such as birth type (sinlge/twin/triplet) as well as parentage (sire and dam) has been included in our sale catalogue along with more accurate Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) and selection indexes, which will give buyers more information and confidence in the figures to help guide their selections.I would like to welcome returning clients and new buyers to the 2019 Rocklyn Merino Stud ram

The silo has been transformed into a brilliant work of art by Melbourne based artist Heesco Khosnaran. The two Merino rams depicted in the artwork are based on photographs of Rocklyn’s 2012 drop hogget rams, taken by local photographer Denise Yates.

Health statusRocklyn is a brucellosis accredited free flock, has been Gudair vaccinated since 2002 and has owner declared footrot free status.

The 2019 Rocklyn sale ramsSixty hogget rams will be offered at the 2019 sale including both horned and poll Merino rams. Lots 1-13 have been housed since July 2019 while lots 14-60 have been paddock-run.This year, the poll rams have been sired by Poll Boonoke, Anderson, Roemahkita, Glenlea Park, Centre Plus, Leahcim and Rocklyn sires. The horned rams have been sired by Rocklyn and Woodyarrup rams.

Measured performance data

Australian sheep breeding values (ASBVs)

Sire Sire of the ram - see sire summary on page 5 for further information.

Sire of Dam Sire of the dam of the ram - information on these sires can be provided on request.

BT Birth type. Single (1), twin (2) or triplet (3).

FD Fibre diameter - the mean fibre diameter in microns of all fibres measured (15 August 2019).

SD Standard deviation of the fibre diameter (15 August 2019).

CV Coefficient of variation of the fibre diameter (15 August 2019).

CF Comfort factor - percentage of fibres under 30 micron (15 August 2019).

BWT Body weight in kilograms (15 August 2019).

YCFW Yearling clean fleece weight (kg) - rams with higher YCFW ASBVs produce progeny that will cut more wool.

YFD Yearling fibre diameter (μm) - rams with more negative YFD ASBVs produce progeny which are finer.

YFDCV Yearling fibre diameter coefficient of variation (%) - rams with lower YFDCV ASBVs will produce progeny with lower variation in fibre diameter.

YSL Yearling staple length (mm) - rams with more positive YSL ASBVs will produce progeny with longer staple length.

YWT Yearling weight (kg) - rams with more positive YWT ASBVs produce progeny that grow quicker and are heavier at a certain age.

YFAT Yearling fat depth (mm) - rams with more positive YFAT ASBVs will produce progeny that have more subcutaneous fat, which improves reproduction rate and meat quality.

YEMD Yearling eye muscle depth (mm) - rams with more positive YEMD ASBVs will produce progeny that have more muscle, independent of weight, and a higher lean meat yield.

YWEC Yearling faecal worm egg count (%) - rams with more negative YWEC ASBVs will produce progeny with higher resistance to worms.

EBWR Early breech wrinkle - rams with more negative EBWR ASBVs will produce progeny with less breech wrinkle and, in general, less body wrinkle as well.

NLW Number of lambs weaned (%) - the higher the NLW ASBV of the ram, the better reproduction you can expect from its daughters.

Selection indexes A selection index combines ASBVs for several traits to give a single value. This reflects the performance of the sheep relative to the breeding objective of the particular index.

The ASBVs and Selection Indexes provided in this sale catalogue are correct as at 7th August 2019 and have been obtained through Sheep Genetics MERINOSELECT. ASBVs change over time as more data is submitted to Sheep Genetics. Updated figures can be provided on request.

DP+

Dual Purpose Plus Index - ranks animals on their ability to produce merinos for dual purpose operations. The index is aimed at producers whose majority of sheep income comes from sheep sales. It is for self-replacing merino flocks that do not keep their wethers and also join a portion of their ewes to terminal sires for lamb production.

MP+

Merino Production Plus Index - ranks animals on their ability to produce progeny for a fine wool operation that has significant surplus sheep sales. The index is aimed at producers whose sheep income is a balance of both wool and surplus sheep sales. It is for self-replacing merino flocks who do not keep their wethers to produce wool.
