Meningitismystery

By Jennifer LangIt may never be determined which

strain of bacterial meningitis claimed the life of Clayton Heights Secondary student Brandon Kurtz last week.

As of Tuesday, no new cases of the in-fection had been reported, Fraser Health Authority spokesman Roy Th orpe-Dor-ward said.

Offi cials hadn’t confi rmed the diagno-sis, but hadn’t given up on identifying the precise strain.

It’s possible antibiotics used to treat the ailing 15-year-old may have killed off enough of the bacteria to preclude an identifi cation.

“Nobody’s doubting that it’s a bacte-rial meningococcal infection,” Th orpe-Dorward said. “But it might be impos-sible to get an identifi cation of the kind or strain.”

Students, parents and guardians, and staff at the Cloverdale-area high school received a letter last week explaining one of their classmates had passed away and that meningitis was the suspected cause.

Fraser Health does not believe there is a risk to the general student population at Clayton Heights, or the public at large.

“People shouldn’t be alarmed,” Th orpe-

Dorward said. “All the steps are being fol-lowed.”

Public health nurses have now com-pleted the task of administering preventa-tive antibiotics to those who were known to have been in close contact with the student.

Th e bacteria is spread by direct contact with the saliva of an infected person, such as sharing a water bottle or a musical in-strument.

Anyone in close contact with the boy between Sept. 8 and 19 and who has not yet gotten in touch with health offi cials is asked to contact the Cloverdale Public Health Unit at 604-575-5100 or Health-LinkBC at 811.

Meningitis is an infection of the fl uid that surrounds the spinal cord and brain, and can aff ect the lining of the brain or cause a blood infection.

It can lead to brain damage or death. Th e symptoms are fl u-like and may in-clude fever, a severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, confusion, vomiting, sensitivity to bright lights or a bruise-like rash.

About 10 per cent of people who de-velop the disease die, according to Health Canada.

Th e brave and the baldBy Jennifer LangTo the shouts and cheers of students, Zion Lu-

theran School principal John Mayan got what might be his closest shave in years.

“I have two words,” he said, addressing the crowd gathered in the school’s gym Sept. 22. “Bald is beau-tiful.”

Mayan was one of two dozen people – many of them Grade 7 students who’d raised at least $100 each in donations – agreeing to lose their locks as part of Shave for the Brave.

Well, how did it feel to be bald?“Colder,” said student Nicholas Houghton, mo-

ments aft er parting ways with his blond curls, thanks to mom Claire on razor duty.

He “just felt like doing it,” he added. “It would have felt wrong to just stay in the crowd.”

Aaron Nuessler, a Grade 3 student who was di-agnosed with cancer in August, was able to watch from BC Childrens’ Hospital via Skype.

Aaron’s Opa Hans Baarschers also went under the razor, thrusting his hands in the air in triumph aft er it was done, eliciting cheers from the crowd.

Two days before the event, Zion Lutheran Church secretary Linda Peters decided she would take the hair plunge, provided she raised $200 in donations.

“She raised $2,000,” her daughter Shannon said.“It’s once in a lifetime,” Linda explained, adding

the fi rst two weeks aft er the shave were probably go-ing to be the hardest in terms of adjustment.

Shave for the Brave was a school fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley campaign, which visited Zion Lutheran School the next morning. Law en-forcement offi cials and emergency services person-nel ride to fi ght pediatric cancers.

classroom at Martha Currie Elementary school should be ready for students to move in by the end of the month.

Martha Currie, lo-cated at 5811 184 Street, is also the focus of reno-vations in a wing of the school to provide addi-tional classroom space.

Th e Surrey School District is completing or in the midst of complet-ing a number of capital projects to accommo-date the move to full-day kindergarten.

Th ose capital proj-ects include 26 modular classrooms at 18 diff er-ent schools, and 32 new classrooms in six addi-tions at A.J. McLellan in Cloverdale, Hazelgrove Elementary in Clay-ton, and at Cambridge, Chimney Hill, Hillcrest and T.E. Scott elemen-tary schools.

Th e young man wandered into the Clo-verdale Reporter offi ce late one recent aft er-noon, looking a little lost. He’d tentatively ap-proached our front door, then turned around, only to return a few moments later.

“Can we help you?” We asked. In halt-ing English (was his accent French? Possibly Spanish?), he said he was looking for Th e Sign. Th e Smallville Sign.

Th e long-running TV show about the early days of Clark Kent, before he became Super-man, was once synonymous with Cloverdale, which stood in for the budding superhero’s home town when the series fi lmed on loca-tion.

Th e folksy phrase Home of Smallville was proudly emblazoned on “Destination Clover-dale” towers welcoming visitors to the historic town centre at 176 Street and Highway 10 and at 58A Avenue.

But they were taken down about two and a half years ago, when 176 Street was revitalized with heritage lamp posts and other beautifi -cation projects. Th e series – which wrapped up its fi nal season earlier this year – hadn’t fi lmed here since 2006. Th ey used a Burnaby backlot instead.

Th e young man’s leather backpack was cov-ered in fl ags and emblems from all over the world – travel souvenirs, presumably. He also clutched a stack of printouts from various fan websites, complete with photos of Th e Sign.

“It’s gone,” we told him. “Th ey took it down.”

His hopeful eyes clouded with disappoint-ment. So we directed him towards another Smallville landmark that’s still around – the Clova Cinema, which stood in for the TV show’s Talon theatre.

Th e Clova? Oh, he’d already seen it, he smiled, nodding. He thanked us and we sent him on his way.

Last month, we had another young Small-ville fan drop by the offi ce wondering – hop-ing – to take a photo of the sign.

She and her dad had come all the way from Ontario and were mighty disappointed to learn it’s no longer on view.

It’s clear Smallville, once Cloverdale’s top tourist draw, continues to win over new fans – folks who are willing to travel across the country, or the world, on a pilgrimage to the real town that played such an important role in their beloved show.

A while back there was talk of commemo-

rating the show with a plaque or sidewalk marker in Cloverdale.

Looking into the eyes of Smallville fans, it still seems like a good idea.

A barn of a different colourTh e new owners of the Red Barn in Clover-

dale have given the heritage buildings a new coat of paint, in a diff erent colour – brown.

Readers weighed in on our Facebook page.“It looks modern, but I think the red made

it stand out and was more memorable,” said Reporter reader Kristy Hill.

“I also liked the red barn,” added Marilyn Guthrie.

Others were more receptive. “Hm, we could get used to that!” piped in Jonas Lee Pho-tography. “It looks really nice,” added Chris Vanderstoep, who admitted the trademark red will be missed.

When told that a store that sells modern furniture has moved into the familiar High-way 10 and 176 Street corner location – for-mer home of Cloverdale’s now defunct Red Barn Antiques for more than 40 years – Kath-leen Kuryliw said she promised to check it out. “Will miss the red yet,” she added.

Jo-Anne Maynes was glad to see a new business coming to town, but also admitted to feeling a little sad to see the red go. “Looks fresh, however, guess we can’t call it the Red Barn anymore.”

– Jennifer Lang, editor

Taking care of business

With activities ranging from chair massages and retirement planning to free blood pressure testing, it wasn’t exactly an average day at the offi ce.

About 150 local HandiDart employees turned out for a health and wellness fair at the Cloverdale depot, the largest of three fairs presented by MVT Canadian Bus Inc.

As many as 12 local vendors participated in the Sept. 13 event here, dispensing advice on smoking cessation, credit counselling, and even legal issues, along with off ering fi tness assessments, and infor-mation on heart health, diabetes and cancer.

“Employees are our greatest asset,” executive co-ordinator Patricia Robertson said.

Employees also received a free healthy snack pack with an apple, granola bar, water bottle and pedom-eter. Th ey could also enter to win fi tness-related prizes.

Th e aim was to help put employees in contact with resources in the community that can help improve their overall physical, mental and fi nancial health.

“It was just to put them in touch with resources they didn’t even know were there,” she said, add-ing for many, it was the fi rst time they’d had their blood pressure checked. “Th ey got some really good information.”

Vendors included WorkSafe BC, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, a physiothera-pist, and others.

MVT is contracted by TransLink to off er Handy-Dart service in the Metro Vancouver area. It has more than 580 employees.

In 1993 writers slouched over a pedestaltable in Cloverdale Starbucks hashing over the pros and cons of producing a writers’ conference.

Could we aff ord it? No.

Would anyone come? Well, we would!

Who would present the workshops and lone keynote? What would we charge?

Was Surrey ready for this? We laughed. You bet!

Spearheaded by inde-fatigable author Ed Grif-

fi n, we plotted a one-day Surrey Writers’ Confer-ence backed by Surrey Continuing Education principal, Elisa Carlson.

A few Johnson Heights Secondary classroom-style workshops, chow in the school cafeteria, Vancouver Sun veteran journalist Denny Boyd as guest speaker in the gym. We thought that should fl y.

It was worth a shot.Th is month – 19 years

later – over 500 writ-ers, poets, playwrights, agents and publishers will fl ock to the Sheraton

Vancouver Guildford Hotel for four action-packed, inspiring days.

Reputed to be among the top three writers’ conferences in North America, Surrey’s own

writers’ conference has aged gracefully.

Over the years Maeve Binchy, Wayson Choy and Jean Auel have de-livered keynotes.

Best-selling authorsDiana Gabaldon (Out-lander series), Jack Whyte (Camulod Chronicles), Anne Perry (Victorian detective se-ries) and New York liter-ary agent Donald Maass are regular workshop presenters.

Local authors and agents are also regularly profi led. A Blue Pencil Café encourages writ-

ers to seek objective cri-tiques from their peers.

Editor and agent ap-pointments off er chances to discuss work person-ally with those in writing markets.

Th is year the confer-ence became a registered not-for profi t society. Th e dedicated nine-per-son volunteer board is currently chaired by Carrie Higgins, while Kathy Chung continues in her second term as conference coordinator.

A comprehensive con-ference seeking to off er something for dreamers

exploring writing op-tions, to established scribes determined to expand their markets, Surrey’s reputation con-tinues to grow.

Vancouver crime writer and lawyer, Mi-chael Slade (aka Jay Clarke), once skeptically questioned why writers would come to Surrey. Now he knows. Th ey come for the pleasure of working with dynamic, dedicated presenters – one of whom is now Slade.

Th is year Oct 16-23

will be designated SurreyInternational Writers’Conference Week in theCity of Surrey.

Th e 2011 conferencebattle cry is “Th is day wewrite!”, Robert Dugoni’sclosing 2010 keynotechallenge that broughtthe cheering packedhouse to its feet.

Generous supportfrom major sponsorssuch as the Arts Coun-cil of Surrey, the Cityof Surrey, Surrey Boardof Trade, the Surrey-North Delta Leader, theCloverdale Reporterand hundreds of enthu-siastic volunteers havegiven the internationalliterary community theright to say: “See you inSurrey!”

For conference infor-mation, or to volunteer, please call 778-322-6445. Registration formsare at www.SiWC.ca.

Roaring like the TwentiesBy Jennifer LangCloverdale’s very own

variety show act – Susie and the Versatiles – will help recreate the Roar-ing Twenties Saturday night in Langley.

Puttin’ On the Ritz also features a barber-shop quartet, and a live speakeasy band.

“We have quite the night arranged for our guests,” said Denni Bonetti, one of the or-ganizers. “Th e Roaring Twenties were a time of wealth and prosper-ity, of clandestine excess and partying.”

Although the raucous decade has a reputation

for bootleg liquor and good times, Puttin’ on the Ritz “will be a classy dinner aff air,” Bonetti added.

Th ere will also be prizes for best costumes at the fundraising event, which also includes a reception and dinner.

To promote the eve-ning, Susie and the Versatiles members Pe-ter Maarsman and Ken Marjoram dressed up like Keystone Cops and “arrested” Langley City mayor Peter Fassbender during a council meet-ing last week.

Puttin’ on the Ritz is presented Oct. 1 at the

Coast Hotel and Con-vention Centre in Lan-gley.

Th e evening is a fund-raiser in support of Lan-gley Lodge.

Guests are encour-aged to dress up in pin stripe suits or fl apper attire. Costume rental store Hallowville Manor has off ered to donate

rental proceeds back to Langley Lodge.

Tickets are available by calling 604-880-6752 or by emailing [email protected].

Why aren’t all Dentists trained in NMD?Dr. Andrew Willoughby Dr. Steven Hill

Ask the Dentists

Q: I’ve battled headaches and a sore jaw for years....last year, I had all my teeth crowned and my new bite created by a Neuromuscular Dentist....and guess what, no more pain!...my question is why aren’t ALL Dentists trained in Neuromuscular Dentistry?A: Great question and as Neuromuscular Dentists ourselves we often wonder this same thing... but, the truth is that there are many different philosophies in the fi eld of Dentistry for the treatment of TMJ Arthralgia and Dysfunction.... NMD is only one of these philosophies.... and different Dentists have been trained and have adopted different philosophies and treatment regimens – this is why not all Dentists are trained in Neuromuscular Dentistry.

Neuromuscular dentistry (NMD) is a dental treatment philosophy in which temporomandibular joints, teeth, muscles, bone and nerves are all considered as parts of the Stomatognathic system. NMD is a treatment modality of Dentistry that focuses on correcting “misalignment” of the jaw centered around the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). NMD acknowledges there are multiple signs and symptoms related to postural problems involving the lower jaw and cervical neck region. NMD recognizes that misalignment problems can be corrected by understanding the relationships between the tissues of the Stomatognathic system. NMD uses objective data to

aid in the understanding of how the bite is affecting these misalignment problems.

Neuromuscular dentistry uses computerized instrumentation to measure jaw function, muscle activity and temporomandibular joint sounds to help identify joint derangements. TENS machines are used to de-program pathological muscle function and aid in determining a physiological (healthy) jaw position. Once a physiologic jaw position is found, an orthotic is used to hold this new position which is worn for 3–6 months (24 hours per day). There is a high degree of success with this type of Neuromuscular orthotic and once symptoms have resolved the patient can choose to wean off of the orthotic or move forward with a Phase Two treatment that will support stable, long term health. Phase two treatments options include; an overlay partial denture, orthodontic treatment, dental restorations/crowns, or an orthodontic/restorative combination.

Dr’s Hill and Willoughby have trained extensively in Neuromuscular Dentistry at the world reknowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies and are available for further consultation if you or a family member suffer from any of the above signs or symptoms.

Dr. Andrew Willoughby holds 4 US Dental Implant Patents and successfully licensed his technology to a international dental implant manufacturer in 2002. Dr. Steven Hill holds his Fellowhip in Neuromuscular Dentistry and has taken extensive training in Neuromuscular Orthodontics.

The Cloverdale

www.cloverdalereporter.com

We are half way through our fourth year running our GUTS Fitness Classes here in Cloverdale. Over the years, we have helped many people reach their fi tness goals and for some, helped them make signifi -cant lifestyle changes.

Besides exercise, we try and teach the importance of achieving a proper level of fi tness. Think about your heart rate. What is your resting heart rate today? What should it be at? The same goes for your blood pres-sure. Many individuals do not have answers to these questions. With a wise exercise program combined with

healthy eating, you can make sure your health measures up to where it is supposed to be and stay there.

Do you tire easily walking up stairs? Does your back hurt, knee’s etc? Slowly one thing after the other will start to breakdown affect-ing your entire body. This in turn will affect your lifestyle. If you do not buckle down, get exer-cising and eat right today, you will surely suffer the consequenc-es tomorrow.

There are many people that only work on one piece

of the puzzle. They will walk,

run or exercise with weights daily but will not take the time to prepare good meals. Then they wonder why they have very little or no success in

reaching their chosen fi tness goal. Are you one of these people?

Here at GUTS we have been involved with the fi tness industry for over 30 years. What makes us different is that we recognize the

importance of good balanced nutrition paired with a tailored training program. If you are working hard and not seeing results; working harder and lon-ger is not the answer to this problem.

Poor results are usually due to over training and under eating. We take pride in the combination of exercise and food planning that we give to our clients. You will get the results once we point you in the right direction. Our group classes are more like personal training as everyone gets the proper atten-tion. We keep the pressure on you when needed and the group environment generally adds to the experience of getting more out

of yourself.Every 3 to 4 months we hold an

afternoon or evening of nutrition to help our clients to understand the importance of food planning and organizing your week with the right

tools to succeed in attain-ing your goals. You will learn how to make smarter choices, better meal combi-nations, cook for the week and even cook if you don’t know how to!

This is just one of many examples of how we try to give our clients better tools to work with.

This Sunday October 2, 2011 from 10:30am – 12:30pm we will be hosting our fi rst Cooking Workshop with a real Chef! His name

is Falk Engelhardt. For more informa-tion on Falk his website is www.gurucooking.ca

Everyone that attends will be par-ticipating and will learn how to prepare some great healthy meals in 20 – 30 minutes. Class space for this workshop is limited. The cost is only $ 30.00. For more information you can call us at 604.574.4811.
