Daisy-chain up to 6 high-performance Thunderbolt devices. Since Thunderbolt 3 uses the USB Type-C connector, any USB device must be placed at the end of the daisy-chain. Since later generations of Thunderbolt devices can be adapted to connect to previous generations of Thunderbolt hosts and later generations of Thunderbolt hosts can connect to previous generations of Thunderbolt devices, it is advised to place devices in order of performance with the daisy-chain. Some computers with more than one Thunderbolt port share a Thunderbolt bus, and thus the bandwidth across the ports. Each port can still daisy-chain up to 6 high-performance Thunderbolt devices, but the (up to 12) Thunderbolt devices will share the same bandwidth. Some computers may have more than one Thunderbolt bus and typically have 2 Thunderbolt ports per Thunderbolt bus. Refer to your computer’s specifications for details. Some Thunderbolt devices may also include a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort. A display connected to this port does not count as one of the 6 devices in the daisy-chain. Since any later generation Thunderbolt device will only be able to run at the speed of the Thunderbolt host, care should be used to use the fewest number of Thunderbolt adapters possible. And the slowest device(s) should be at the end of the daisy-chain. Up to 2 Thunderbolt displays can be used within the 6, and should be the last devices on the chain. Some computers may require connecting the displays to Thunderbolt ports on different buses. Thunderbolt daisy-chaining allows you to connect multiple Thunderbolt devices to your computer! Since all devices on a Thunderbolt daisy-chain (and bus) share the same bandwidth, please use these guidelines when setting up your daisy-chain, but some experimentation may be required to find the best configuration that best meets your requirements.
