I was not much different than most kids; I was born and raised in Barrackville Wv. I went to church as a kid, sometimes with my mom but Evabelle, a lady from

#7 mine area would load all of us kids that wanted to go to church and take us with her, so I had Christ in my life at a early age, but I had a learning disability and had a hard time not being as smart as other kids, that was the first of many thoughts of suicide. Alcohol was also available around the house at an early age, and I began drinking at 11 years of age. I lost my dad in the coal mine a week from my 14th birthday that was the same year that I smoked pot for the first time. Even though I had good friends and was ok at sports and riding motorcycles I played and rode trying to live up to someone that wasn’t there. I did accept Jesus as my savior at 15 years old, but I didn’t live my life for him. In 1987 I joined the Marine Corp and excelled as a Marine, I also was married that same year, but alcohol was a big part of my life, and during Desert Shield / Desert Storm was the longest time that I had gone without alcohol sense I started drinking. After getting out of the Marines cocaine became part of my life, and my marriage fell apart, not having my kids in my life all the time made thoughts of suicide even more pronounced. I could go on for a long time with my testimony but this article will not have the room, but I will tell you that I had a rope that laid on my kitchen table as me and the people that I called my friends, (that I Pray for salvation for) did lines of cocaine off that table and no one ever asked me what that rope was for, but God knew what I had it for and had put things in my path to keep me from taking that step, thank you Lord!! I eventually asked for help from my family first then gave it over to God, and through that he has taken away the addiction and any thoughts of suicide. JESUS is the answer, JOHN 6:35-40 Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will

never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All that the father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Fathers will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.Have hope, Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all the joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.Suicide Prevention

A man received the following text from his good friend and neighbor: I am so sorry Bob. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been tapping your wife, day and night, when you’re not around. In fact, much more than you do. I’m not getting any at home, but that’s no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won’t happen again. You have my word. The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife and killed her.A few moments later, a second text came in: “Damn auto-correct. I meant wifi, not wife. ___________________________________________It was Easter Sunday morning and the Preacher had already given sermon to the adults in the congregation. Now he was presenting a children’s sermon. He asked the children if they knew what the Resurrection was? In response to the question, “Little Johnny” raised his hand. The Priest called on him and the Little Johnny said; “I know that if you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hours you are supposed to call the doctor.”It took ten minutes for the congregation to settle down enough for the service to continue.___________________________________________Brinkley gets this text from his brother, Oxley, recently. It read. “Can I stay at your house for a few days, all the acceptable hotels are booked? “Lambkins” kicked me out after she caught me measuring my penis. For what it’s worth, it reaches all the way to the back of her sister’s throat!” Just sayin’.___________________________________________Gruber was talking to his fishing buddies about how we saw a fortune teller the other day. “She told me I would come into some money. Last night I screwed a

girl named Penny. Now, come on guys, is that spooky or what?” ___________________________________________Allan went to the doctor’s office the other day and found out that his Doctors’ new Intern was young, female, and drop-dead gorgeous. Allan was embarrassed, but the Intern tried to calm his nervousness by saying, “Don’t worry, I’m a professional, I’ve seen it all before. There’s nothing that we as physicians can’t get past and help our patients. Please just tell me what’s wrong and I’ll check it out. Allan shyly replied, “My wife thinks that my penis tastes odd and I’d like a second opinion”.

I said to the wife, “Get me a newspaper.”“Don’t be silly,” she said. “Here, use my iPad.”That damn spider never knew what hit it.___________________________________________I bought a new perfume for my wife called Chloroform. She says she doesn’t like it but will continue to use it as I really love it. She says that it makes her sleepy, gives her loss of memory and makes her ass really sore in the morning.

The Cowger family opened The Custard Stand in 1991 as a take-out dairy bar in Webster Springs, West Virginia, and incorporated our century-old family recipe for the hot dog chili. Customers kept asking where they could

buy Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili. They asked so many times that in 2003, we remodeled some space behind the Webster Springs restaurant into a state of the art, USDA-approved production facility and Custard Stand Food Products, LLC was born.

Our second restaurant, The Custard Stand-Flatwoods, opened in early 2009 in Flatwoods and we’ve been expanding ever since. Each restaurant is just a little bit different from the rest so be sure to stop by and check out all our locations!

I purchased my first Harley in 2008, a brand new 1200 Nightster. I had to wait almost a week before I could take it home. That was one of the longest weeks of my life. I felt like a kid waiting

for Christmas. When the day finally arrived for me to claim my new purchase, it rained. I paced back and forth between the weather channel and the window to see if there was going to be enough of a break in the weather for me to go. Sure enough, there was an expected two-hour gap in the weather. I called my buddy, and he raced over to drive me to the dealership. Once there, the mechanic went over all the things I needed to know about the bike and its brand new engine. Before he was finished, I could see it was starting to sprinkle again. At this point, nothing was going to keep me from getting my new toy home. I finally strapped on my helmet and followed my buddy back to my house. This wasn’t going to be too bad, I thought to myself. No sooner had I thought that when the skies opened up and it poured. I could barely see my friend’s tail lights now; every drop of rain that hit my face felt like I was being shot repeatedly by a bb gun. I was miserable, yet still excited about riding my first Harley. I finally made it home, parked in my garage, and began drying off my bike, all the while apologizing to my new bike for forcing it to ride in the rain on its first journey. Little did I know then, but this was something that would happen to us many more times.

Now I was a man who had everything, well, almost everything. There was still something missing. I needed somewhere to ride. I searched for information about places to visit in Maryland, and came across a brochure titled “Ride with Us”. This offered forty participating Harley dealerships in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. At each of the dealerships visited, you would get a card stamped. The goal was to collect as many stamps as you could, because, the more stamps you had, the higher value your gift certificate would be if your name was drawn. And, if you were able to visit 35 of the 40 dealerships, you had a chance of winning the grand prize, a brand new Harley Davidson.

This was just what I was looking for. I sat at my computer and mapped out a full day ride hitting as many dealerships as I could. Once satisfied with my route, I printed up directions from one stop to the next ending with my ride back home.

I couldn’t have picked a better morning to start my adventure. It was only 7:00am and already warm and sunny. I hopped on my

bike and headed to my first stop, York, Pennsylvania. While there, I decided I would get a T-shirt from every dealership I visited. Regretfully, I didn’t have the time to take a tour of the factory where the Harleys were made. I continued my journey through some of the most scenic places Pennsylvania had to offer. I stood on Reading Railroad until I realized I did not pass go and would not receive $200. I rode along the curvy roads winding up and down the Poconos

Mountains, without being on my honeymoon. I rode alongside an Amish gentleman riding his horse-drawn cart, and eventually made my way into New Jersey. In Jersey, I met some of the nicest folks you could meet anywhere.

It seemed like all of them were ready to take me in and feed me a home cooked meal. The dealerships where I stopped were nothing more than huge barns. My last stop in New Jersey was in the beach resort town of Wildwood. Here I was able to catch the last Cape May- Lewes Ferry into Delaware. The sun was now starting to set, so I decided to stay in Ocean City for the night and continue my journey the next day.I woke up early the next morning and headed to the Ocean City

Harley Dealership. From there, I just headed north through Delaware where I was able to hit three more dealerships. Mike’s Famous Harley in New Castle was one of the more memorable dealerships. This huge complex had more brand new Harleys than I have ever seen in one place. There was also a museum that you could walk through showing some of the first Harleys ever made. When I finally got home I had visited twenty dealerships and

purchased twenty T-shirts. I spent the next week working out another ride that would allow me to hit another fifteen dealerships. This ride would take me as far north as New York. However, the weather wasn’t as cooperative as last time. When I made it home from this ride I looked as if I had ridden through a hurricane, which was exactly how I felt, but I had done it. I had collected my thirty five stamps and purchased my thirty five T-shirts. I stuck my stamps in an envelope and mailed them in for the contest. It was several months before I heard anything back from them but

the day finally arrived when I received a package in the mail. I excitedly opened it only to discover that I had, in fact, won. I won myself a T-shirt.

Ride safe and enjoy,Mike “Smiles” Johnson

I got a phone call from my son one day. He was all excited and said go to you tube quick! You have got to

hear this song You Remind Me Of West Virginia by Wyatt Turner. Your gonna Love it! I hate when my kids are right. I was hooked the first time I heard it. I guess I wasn’t the only one either. He had a bunch of hits on you tube. We went to Mountainfest 2013 this past summer and I was pleasantly surprised to find out Wyatt was there and going to sing this song. After he performed I had the chance to sit down and talk with him for awhile. Wyatt is one of those young men you root for in life. He was such a nice guy and kept calling me sir. I kept looking over my shoulder to see who he was talking to. He has been in Nashville recording his new cd and it is due out in October 2013. I hope things work out for him. I really like his music. One thing is for sure there are a whole bunch of us mountain folk that already are fans.HB- Do you or have you ride a bike?WT- The first bike I rode was a little Yamaha 80. I rode it til it died and then my Uncle gave me a Honda 750 Black Shadow in mint condition. Right before I was going to get my motorcycle license I did something stupid like all kids do. I went out riding with my cousin. He was riding a 4 wheeler and we went down a straight one lane road and he pulled out around me. We were going around 65-70 M.P.H. and he decided to be funny and slam on his brakes and slide the 4 wheeler sideways. Well I couldn’t stop my bike on a dime and I hit him and went flying about forty feet in the air away from the bike. I was nearly killed in the accident. I broke my ribs, shoulder, some toes and had some gashes in my head. I lost a lot of blood. Luckily I made it through this. I think I was most upset about my bike. I still got it and I wanna repair it and get another one as well. I love motorcycles.HB- Let’s talk about your song You Remind Me Of West Virginia. How did you come up with the idea for this?WT - I wanted to write a love song for a long time that compares the beauty of my home state of W.Va. Because, it’s got such a natural beauty. The inspiration

came when I was driving home from Nashville and driving thru the mountains and I wanted to incorporate that with the love I have with my Fiancé. I was able to take the whole natural beauty aspect and compare those to her and it just kind of came together in my head and then on paper in the best way. It was phenomenal how it came about. I knew it was a good song but when I put the song up on line I never expected the response that it received. When I first put it up I was hoping maybe 100 people would see it .I had no idea that 130,000 people would see and like it with 50,000 on the first day. It’s just a song that speaks to me and two of the things that I cherish in my life.HB - Where do you see things going in the future for you?WT - I see a lot of great things I hope. I already had a pretty good fan base and this song has pushed everything over the top. I really appreciate the fans in W.Va. I love them. When they get behind something they really support you.HB - I know your recording now. Will you be releasing any more music soon? WT - Yes I’m not sure of the dates but you can follow me on face book at Wyatt Turner Music and the web page is going up and it’s going to be Wyatt turnerofficial.com. Check it out for all the latest news.I have interviewed lots of people since we started this magazine and Wyatt’s one of the nicest . Please go check out one his shows. You won’t be disappointed.Folks remember when sippin always lose the lid and share with your friends. If you need a good cigar I get mine from DAVIDUS Cigars.Til Next Time God Bless,Hillbilly

Wyatt Turner was born in

1989 in the small West Virginia town of Stony Bottom. Located on the Greenbrier River, in Pocahontas County, this small logging town, shaped the young man that Wyatt is, and as evidenced by Wyatt’s latest single, “You Remind Me of WV”, inspired the music that he writes. From his earliest middle school performances to participating in contests such as the Colgate Country Challenge, trying out for Nashville Star, making it to the second round of tryouts for American Idol, and most lately, being chosen for Season 3 of the Voice, Wyatt’s talent as a singer, songwriter and entertainer are apparent.

Wyatt Turner possesses one of those instant-classic country voices. His natural charm, infectious sense of humor and effortless stage presence make him strikingly charismatic, especially for someone so young and relatively inexperienced in show business.

“You Remind Me of WV” Wyatt’s current single has gone viral. With more than 100,000 views in less than 48 hours, the single has claimed the attention of fans, media, and politicians. Alan Jackson, Blake Shelton, and of course WV Native, Brad Paisley have all influenced Wyatt musically. While Wyatt still calls WV home, he has been busy in Nashville writing, co-writing and seeking out songs that showcase his style and talent. The You Tube release of the single, You Remind of WV, has brought Wyatt quickly to the national forefront of the country music industry and plans are underway for a national radio release of the single.

I’m ready to hit the road,” he says. “I love being on stage. I can’t wait to tour. It’s not about the money. I just love doing my music. Singing is just that passion for me. It’s that natural high that I get from doing it.“But I don’t ever want to forget where I come from. I am proud of being from West Virginia. It is so beautiful and so are its people. They are the most hospitable people anywhere, and I just want everyone to know how proud I am of my home-town folks. West By-God Virginia.”

& Wyatt Turner

Joe Johnson Truck, Car and Bike ShowSaturday, April 5, 2014 10:00 AMThis is a charity event helps Joe Johnson Bible Knowledge Awards given out at graduation each year. It has simple categories and free admission to all. Joe Johnson, who is chaplain for the Home and School Association, voiced his idea for getting more community involvement with the Eastern Shore Junior Academy in 2010. He felt that the school should host a truck, motorcycle and car show in early April to start off the season. In 2011, the first show occurred and Joe was there, working the registration table and opening the show. He had a great time and began making plans for the next year. Almost tragically, Joe fell the next day striking his head and triggering a stroke that nearly took his life. Six months of therapy and recovery found Joe a little weaker but still determined to get the show rolling again. For more info. : [email protected]

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTESCompiled & Edited by Bill Bish,National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

U.S. SENATE ACTS TO STOP MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS

Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Senate to prohibit the use of federal funds in establishing motorcycle-only checkpoints. S.2078, the “Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act,” sponsored by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Wednesday, March 5th, and is similar to H.R. 1861, introduced last year in the U.S. House by Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI).The bill would prohibit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from issuing grants to states to set up checkpoints where motorcycle riders are targeted by police to check that their vehicles meet state standards for noise, tire condition and other requirements, and are also checked for safety gear during the roadside checkpoints.Over the past few years, such roadblocks have been conducted in New York, Georgia, Virginia and Utah during large motorcycle rallies. The senators argue that these types of checkpoints are discriminatory and unnecessary since motorcycle riders are already subject to state registration, inspection, licensing and helmet laws and must stop at sobriety check points like all other drivers. One co-sponsor, Sen. Manchin, former governor of West Virginia, says the checkpoints are a waste of taxpayer funding that can have an adverse effect on states’ economies. “Requiring bikers to drive through motorcycle-only checkpoints is not only an ineffective use of taxpayer dollars, but it also raises legitimate questions about discrimination against motorcyclists. In West Virginia, bikers travel near and far to drive on our winding roads and enjoy the beautiful scenery, which attracts tourism and helps boost both our local and state economies,” Manchin said. “As a Harley owner myself, I am pleased to work with my colleagues on this bipartisan legislation that simply would prohibit yet another senseless and unreasonable federal regulation which could harm states’ economies.”The states of California, Illinois, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Virginia have all passed legislation to bar such checkpoints.

CDC TASK FORCE RECOMMENDS HELMET LAWS

The Community Preventative Services Task Force, a panel operating under the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), has reported its findings for improving motorcycle rider safety, recommending that states and the federal government focus on passing helmet laws.

In its first-ever findings statement on motorcycle safety, the group of mostly medical professionals emphasize that motorcyclist fatalities have nearly doubled since 2000, but ignore the fact that motorcycle registrations have likewise multiplied over the same time period.Members of Congress have written the CDC requesting that they back off from helmet propaganda, but the federal health agency feels justified in pursuing all preventable injuries.FURTHER EPA ACTIONS RESTRICT E15 FUEL

Following passage of the Farm Bill, which hampers the availability of E15 (gasoline containing 15% ethanol) by restricting blender pumps necessary to dispense the fuel, as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recent move to reduce for the first time the amount of ethanol required to be blended into U.S. gasoline supplies, two new EPA regulations are expected to further limit E15 availability. In action taken March 3rd, the EPA decided against adopting E15 as its standard test fuel, and in other regulatory action refused to waive E15 vapor pressure limits, which will effectively reduce its distribution to gas stations during summer months.Previously, the EPA approved E15 for use in cars and trucks built since 2001, but has not approved the fuel for use in any motorcycles or ATVs, and manufacturers have warned that E15 can damage engines and even inadvertent fueling can void warranties.

PENNSYLVANIA LIMITS MOTORCYCLE LEARNERS PERMITS

State Representative Seth Grove introduced HB 892 in this session of the Pennsylvania State Legislature in an effort to curb the practice of “serial permitting” by novice riders in the state, and the bill was just signed by the Governor and becomes effective immediately. The new law restricts the number of times someone can reapply for a motorcycle learners permit to three times in a 5 year period. Prior to this law, there was no restriction on the number of times an individual could reapply for a learners permit and thereby skirting the need to take the full motorcycle license written and riding test.“We have been dealing with individuals who continually violate the restrictions of motorcycle permits because they treat permits like actual licenses,” Grove said.ABATE of Pennsylvania also supported the bill and provides free student motorcycle safety training, with an opportunity to obtain a class “M” license upon completion of the course.

FLORIDA LAWMAKERS MAY MAKE DRIVERS WATCH OUT FOR MOTORCYCLISTS

Safety rule number one for motorcycle riders is to watch out for car drivers, but a proposal in Florida could make it state law for drivers to watch out for motorcycles. The bill covers what Senator Greg Evers (R-District 2) calls “vulnerable road users.” That includes motorcyclists, pedestrians, road workers, scooter and bicycle riders, farm equipment operators, carriage drivers and those in wheelchairs. If a driver commits a moving violation that results in bodily injury, it would become a second-degree misdemeanor. If it causes death, it would become first-degree, with the potential for license suspension.

ABATE SEEKS TO ALLOW OFF-ROAD VEHICLES ON COUNTY ROADWAYS

Indiana state law bans driving off-road vehicles on public streets, but ABATE of Indiana, a motorcycle advocacy group, is asking Tippecanoe County commissioners to exercise a clause that allows county officials to allow all-terrain vehicles, gators and various other off-road machines, including snowmobiles, to use county roads in unincorporated areas. “We’re just requesting that they at least evaluate this; look at what other communities have done with this -- what other counties have done with this” said Jay Jackson, executive director of ABATE of Indiana. “We’re not aware of any significant ramifications as a result, so we don’t see a downside to it.”Jackson told commissioners that 45 Indiana counties currently allow off-road vehicles on public roads. The vehicles still must comply with state laws governing off-road vehicles. State law requires the rider or driver be 16 years old and licensed, and also requires that the vehicle be registered, much like a boat.

WEIRD NEWS: BIKER BURIED WITH BIKE

An Ohio biker was granted his last wish to be buried astride his beloved Harley-Davidson, but it took one custom Plexiglas casket, three extra burial plots, five embalmers and six years of planning and preparations for 82-year old Bill Standley of Mechanicsburg, Ohio to share a grave with the ’67 Harley he bought new and rode around the country through 49 states. It all started 18 years ago when Standley joked with his kids about who would inherit his motorcycle; “I’ve got two sons, only got one bike,” and one of his daughters off-handedly quipped, “Oh dad, just be buried with it.”

Six years ago, Standley went before the Champaign County Board of Health to get permission for the bizarre burial, and was informed that he would need a special vault and he’d have to drain all of the fluids out of the bike.He and his two sons then custom built a see-through casket from a modified septic tank, reinforced with wood and steel, and on January 31st family and friends took him on his last ride to the cemetery, where a crane lowered him and his bike to their final resting place in full riding gear, forever in the wind.
