Racing Queensland, in a condensed

winter carnival, reduced the distance of the Group 1 two-year-old race for

this year in place of the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1350m) due to the

Covid-19 pandemic that limited interstate participation.

“We would have loved to have pushed on to the mile race, but he just

jarred up on that track again which he did the first time he went there

(Eagle Farm).” Symons said yesterday.

“We’ve got some races in the spring time that we’d like to aim at, so we

will stop now and see what we can do.”

Thunder Mania was considered a contender for the Magic Millions

2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) on the back of his debut win at Doomben in mid-

December but he came out of his sixth in the B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3,

1200m) a bit jaded and was afforded a break by Symons and Laxon.

He returned from a spell with back-to-back wins at the Sunshine

Coast before his four and a quarter length fifth in the J J Atkins Plate, won

by fellow Queenslander Rothfire (Rothesay).

Thunder Mania, an $85,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

purchase by Symons’ client Micheal Kirby from the Baramul Stud draft,

could follow the path set by Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) who was

narrowly defeated in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) last year before

returning for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) in January.

“If we can get (to the Caulfield Guineas) that would be good, but

there’s obviously other races down there like the Stutt Stakes and the

Carbine Club that would suit him as well,” the Group 1-winning trainer

said.

“There’s quite a few races he could run him in if we go south but, of

course, he’s a Magic Millions horse so we want to make sure we back up

into the three-year-old race up here as well.”

New Zealander Laxon is best-known as the trainer of champion

Melbourne Cup-winning mare Ethereal (Rhythm) while Symons has

enjoyed success at the top level with Bel Esprit (Royal Academy) who

won the 2002 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the 2003 Doomben

10,000 Stakes (Gr 1, 1350m).

Like Bel Esprit, who was a $9,000 Inglis Classic bargain buy as a

yearling, Symons was prepared to forgive some perceived conformation

faults with Thunder Mania.

“As soon as I saw him I wanted him. It was just the way he walked and

carried himself and the way he was balanced,” he said.

“He has a little bit of a turned front foot, which probably put a few

people off, but it didn’t worry me and I was happy to look past some of

those defects. It’s not that bad and he’s not as bad as Bel Esprit was.

“He was great buying as it’s turned out; it’s just unfortunate that both

times he’s been to Eagle Farm it’s been like concrete and he’s just jarred

up.

“He’s immature and that’s why he’ll get better as he gets older because

he’s not quite set up everywhere yet.”

Nature Strip to follow proven pathTrainer Chris Waller will set Nature Strip

(Nicconi) on a similar campaign towards

October’s The Everest (1200m) as he followed

last year. Nature Strip remains the only horse

locked in for the $15 million race, secured for

the TAB slot, and is likely to run in the Concorde

Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) and the Premiere Stakes

(Gr 2, 1200m) before tackling The Everest third-

up. "That's when he usually races at his best,"

Waller said. "There are a couple of Melbourne

options but I don't want the horse to do too

much travelling." Waller’s slot was filled last

year by three-year-old Yes Yes Yes (Rubick)

and he told AAP he is considering running a

three-year-old this year, with a number of his

rising three-year-olds “not far below” last year’s

Everest winner. His stakes-winning juveniles

have been Global Quest (More Than Ready),

Hungry Heart (Frankel) and September Run

(Exceed And Excel), while horses like Overlord

(Sebring), Achiever (Pride Of Dubai) and

Sauvestre (Hinchinbrook) look capable of

progressing at three.

Gailo Chop returns once moreRising 10-year-old Gailo Chop (Deportivo) will be

retired should he show trainer Matthew Williams

that he doesn’t want to race again, but the handler

has been pleasantly surprised by the chestnut’s

demeanour since returning to work. Gailo Chop

finished last in two runs in Sydney during the

autumn, but had performed well for second

in the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) in

December. "He's really sound and well at the

moment so we’ll press on and let the old boy tell

us," Williams said. "We'll look to have a crack at

the Makybe Diva Stakes, Underwood Stakes and

Caulfield Stakes, but after a couple of runs if he's

not shaping up well we may then have to look at

retirement. He might be saying, 'I'm sound, but

I'm over racing.'"

Schabau set for short spellGerman import Schabau (Pastorius) will not

run again during the winter with trainer Robert

Hickmott sending the galloper to the paddock

this week, alongside stablemate Django

Freeman (Campanologist). Hickmott will be

aiming to earn Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

ballot exemption in The Bart Cummings (Gr

3, 2500m) with Schabau, who is set to return

in late July or early August. "We want to keep

him (racing) at Flemington and there wasn't

a suitable race for him so we elected not to

run him again," Hickmott said. "He went to

Sandown on Wednesday for a gallop to finish

off his prep and he'll go to the paddock (this

week). They will do some water walking and be

under saddle three times a week, keeping their

muscle tone up. It's more a mental break.”

War Front stallion to stand at Glen EdenMultiple Group 1 placegetter Fleet Review (War

Front) will join the Glen Eden Stud roster this

season, it was announced yesterday. Fleet Review

was placed in the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f)

and the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f), both times behind

stablemate U S Navy Flag (War Front), before

travelling to Australia for the 2018 spring. His

sire’s sons include Declaration Of War, sire of this

year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Vow

And Declare, and The Factor. “He is an impressive

specimen in both type and conformation, and

with a beautiful temperament to match,” said

Glen Eden Stud principal Sonia O’Gorman. “We

believe he is great value for breeders to tap into

one of the best sire lines in the world.” He will

stand for $8,800 (inc GST) in 2020.

Kiwis toast Aussie win with son of Ghibellines

The colours of former top Kiwi galloper

Booming (Don Eduardo) were once again in the

winners’ circle last week when Smokin’ Romans

(Ghibellines) won at Ballarat on Thursday. Part-

owner Don Frampton raced Booming, winner of

the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Zabeel

Classic (Gr 1, 2000m), and believes that Smokin’

Romans will improve over further than the 1500

metres of last week’s victory. “He was a horse I

took a liking to when I first saw him at Karaka,”

Frampton said. “I was a little bit late getting down

to the sale and seeing him go through the ring

but I followed up afterwards with Darren Weir

who had bought him. I spoke with Darren and it

turned out he had bought him as a spec horse so

I said to him to give me twenty-four hours and I

would get a group together to race him. We ended

up getting sixty-five percent for a bunch of my

friends who are all Kiwi guys. When Darren got

into trouble, he was moved to Ciaron and David

(Maher and Eustace) and we retained our share

in him.”

Colless back in spotlight

Veteran jockey Glen Colless was his usual easy-

going self despite winning his biggest race in four

years on Love You Lucy (Love Conquers All) in

the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Eagle

Farm. The last time Colless tasted major carnival

success was on Malaguerra (Magnus) in the 2016

Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m). Originally

from the NSW northern rivers region, Colless

settled on the Gold Coast 20 years ago and is

firmly entrenched there. "I mainly ride at the Gold

Coast on Saturdays these days. The back isn't the

greatest so I can manage it by cutting down on

travel," he said. "But I still get a kick out of the

competitiveness of big racing." Colless is now

attached to the powerful Chris Waller satellite

stable on the Gold Coast where he is the main

trackwork rider. "I get to ride these nice horses (in

trackwork) and occasionally on race day," he said.

Cahill banned twiceQueensland jockey Michael Cahill has been

suspended over rides in the first and last of nine

races at Eagle Farm in a winter carnival finale for

Brisbane's metropolitan tracks. Cahill won the first

race on Sydney visitor Thy Kingdom Come (Lope

De Vega) but was suspended for 12 days. Cahill

was also found guilty of causing interference on

Fiesta (I Am Invincible) in the Dane Ripper Stakes.

He was suspended for ten days with the concurrent

penalties to start next Sunday and end on July 3.

Victorian TABs to reopenVictoria’s TABs will reopen from June 22,

providing the racing industry with an important

funding boost through betting turnover. As part

of a loosening of Victoria’s Covid-19 restrictions

confirmed yesterday, the state’s standalone

TABs and pub TABs will be allowed to trade

with up to 50 patrons from June 22. Gaming

venues, however, will remain closed until July

20 with strict social distancing regulations to

remain in place.

Crowds could soon return to Victorian meetingsVictoria Racing Minister Martin Pakula is also

pushing for crowds to be allowed to return to

the state’s race meetings. The call comes as

Premier Daniel Andrews announced that some

Covid-19 restrictions would be relaxed from

June 22. “Over the next week, we’ll work with

our racing codes, clubs & DHHS to get owners

back on to racetracks,” Pakula said. “It will be

permitted under directions from June 22, and

will commence once racing authorities & clubs

have settled protocols to ensure a COVIDSafe

environment for participants.”

NEW ZEALAND

Strong turnout for Waikato weanling paradeWaikato Stud principal Mark Chittick is

anticipating plenty of interest in the farm’s

18 yearlings for the New Zealand Bloodstock

Weanling Sale, which is being held online

through the Gavelhouse Plus platform for the

first time. Waikato Stud paraded their weanlings

on Saturday and will also parade them again

on Tuesday and Thursday, where they will be

joined by the Little Avondale Stud draft as well.

“We had about twenty odd people for Saturday

which was really good as we put the day

together at reasonably short notice,” Chittick

said. “Everybody that was there were genuine

horse people looking to buy and we would

expect the same this week. We will have our

weanlings parading from 10am on the two days

this week as well as showing our five stallions

from 9:30am, which is something we didn’t

do on Saturday. These eighteen weanlings are

ones that we would usually take on through

to the Yearling Sale at Karaka ourselves but

circumstances have meant we won’t be able to

do so this year. We rely on a number of offshore

staff to help with our yearling draft and with

circumstances around our borders being what

they are, we are worried about the numbers we

will have so we have adjusted a few things to

suit the situation we are faced with.”

Te Rapa revitalises caller SimonA midweek trial session would normally be

far from exciting for racecaller George Simon,

but last week’s 33-heat program at Te Rapa

last Tuesday had him fired up for the return of

racing in New Zealand. “It was a re-baptism of

fire with 33 heats and I loved every minute of it,”

Simon said. “I think the lockdown gave me the

chance to revitalise as you tend to be busy and

on autopilot a lot of the time. It made me realise

just how much I love what I do and how much

enjoyment it gives me. You can take things

for granted at times and you don’t know how

much you miss it until you can’t do it anymore.”

Simon will be the voice of the first New Zealand

meeting in three months when racing gets

underway at Pukekohe on Saturday. “I said

to my wife last night that I will finally be back

working at a proper race meeting in a week and

I’m really excited about it,” he said. “You do tend

to go on autopilot a little but I’m definitely out

of that mode now and really looking forward to

catching up with people I haven’t seen in what

seems like a very long time.”

Jockey Morgenrood disqualified for lifeSouth African rider Brandon Morgenrood has

been given a second life ban from the saddle

after being found guilty of conspiracy to harm

a rival during a race at Riccarton in February.

Morgenrood, who was issued a life ban for

race fixing in South Africa in 2001 before the

suspension was reduced to five years, made the

move to New Zealand in 2016. He was charged

with attempting to cause Tina Comignaghi,

his former girlfriend, to fall from Vivace Lady

(Showcasing) in an 1800-metre maiden on

February 21. Morgenrood rode Vivace Lady

in trackwork, pulling unnecessarily on the

horse’s mouth in order to get the filly to react

mid-race, while he also approached fellow

jockey Brett Murray on February 18, asking for

his help in positioning Comignaghi so that he

could cause interference. Stewards, in handing

down the life ban, said such a calculated,

premeditated and intentional offence had no

place in racing.

she quickened away from the field to win by five

lengths. Magic Attitude (Galileo) got closest to

the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained winner, just

holding off Solsticia (Le Havre) by a head in

their battle for second. Tawkeel is the first foal

out of the Listed-winning mare Rafaadah (Oasis

Dream). Teofilo shuttled for three successive

seasons from 2009, and after missing 2012 he

returned for another year in 2013 and again

in 2016 and 2017. He is among an elite group

September to take out the Cocked Hat Stakes

(Listed, 1m3f) at Goodwood on his third start

Keane, she made headway in the final furlong and

snatched victory by a neck from Fresnel (Sea The

First for Goken

Haras de Colleville’s first season sire Goken

(Kendargent) has already made an excellent

start to his career firing in winners and he was

rewarded with a first stakes winner yesterday

when Livachope (2 f ex Laia Chope by Soave)

bolted up in the Prix la Fleche (Listed, 1000m)

at Chantilly. A course and distance winner here

on debut last month, Livachope overcame a

wide draw with early speed and quickly went

to the lead before making all to gain victory by

three-quarters of a length from Pom Malpic

(Pomellato) with Winvalchope (Kheleyf)

another five lengths back in third. Goken stood

for a fee of just €3,000 (AUS$5,000 aprrox)

this year and is already responsible for five

individual winners.

12 for AustraliaCoolmore’s Australia (Galileo) registered his

12th individual stakes winner when Mare

Australis (3 c ex Miramere by Rainbow Quest)

snatched a last-gasp victory in the Prix l’Avre

(Listed, 1m4f) for an in-form Pierre-Charles

Boudot, who needed every ounce of strength

to lift the favourite home and complete a four-

timer at Chantilly yesterday. The Andre Fabre-

trained three-year-old, who was racing for the

third time in his career, beat Frohsim (Dabirsim)

by a neck with Suffrage (Mastercratfsman) two

lengths further behind in third. Australia stands

at Coolmore in Ireland for a fee of €27,500

(AUS$41,150 approx).

18 for Canford Cliffs Cima Emergency (3 c ex Golden Song by

Singspiel) became the 18th individual stakes

winner for former Blue Gum Farm shuttler

Canford Cliffs (Tagula) when winning the

Premio Parioli (Gr 3, 1600m), the Italian 2,000

Guineas, at Capannelle yesterday. He took the

honours by a length and three quarters from

the German raider (Areion) while Sicomoro

(Sakhee’s Secret) was another three lengths

back in third. Cima Emergency broke his

maiden last month having finished second in

the Gran Criterium (Gr 2, 1500m) at San Siro

last October. He was making his fifth career start

for his second win. Canford Cliffs has stood at

Highlands Stud in South Africa since 2018.

13 for Sakhee’s SecretSakhee’s Secret (Sakhee) sired his 13th

individual stakes winner courtesy of a victory

for Granatina (3 f ex Argiva by Rakti) in the

Premio Regina Elena (Gr 3, 1600m), the Italian

1,000 Guineas, at Capannelle yesterday.

Trained by Andrea Renzi, the filly was making

it four wins in six starts when she beat Faccio

Lo (Bated Breath) with La La Land (Outstrip) in

third. Sakhee’s Secret, the sire of Rich Hill Mile

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Sakhee’s Soldier,

stands at Allevamento Si Fra in Italy.

Red Verdon back on the winning trail

Regular tourist Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid),

a runner in the last two Caulfield Cups (Gr 1,

2400m) ran out an impressive winner of the

Grand Cup Stakes (Listed, 1m6f) at Doncaster

yesterday to post his first victory since July

last year. Travelling strongly throughout, he

powered to the front and easily dismissed the

challenge of favourite King’s Advice (Frankel)

by a length and three quarters. There was a

gap of another three and a quarter lengths to

the third, Euchen Glen (Authorized). Winning

jockey David Allen said: “I just hung on and off

he went - he took control of me to be honest.

I was surprised at how much of a turn of foot

he had.” The Ed Dunlop-trained seven-year-old

missed taking part in the 2019 Melbourne Cup

thanks to a minor injury sustained in the lead

up to the race.

Sottsass made to work hard for Ganay victoryLast season’s Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m)

winner Sottsass (Siyouni) registered the fifth

win of his nine-start career when successful

in yesterday’s Prix Ganay (Gr 1, 2100m) on his

return to Chantilly. Sent off the even-money

favourite, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained four-

year-old was made to work hard for his victory

as he beat Way To Paris (Champs Elysees) by a

head. Shaman (Shamardal) finished best of the

rest, another three lengths behind in third.

El Astronaute flies to Achilles successEl Astronaute (Approve) made all the running

to bag the win in yesterday’s Achilles Stakes

(Listed, 5f) at Doncaster. Last seen when

finishing third in the Prix de l’Abbaye (Gr

1, 5f) at Longchamp in October, the John

Quinn-trained seven-year-old beat Tarboosh

(Bahamian Bounty) by half a length with Final

Venture (Equiano) another two and a quarter

lengths down in third. El Astronaute now has

three stakes wins among his haul of 13 wins

from 51 starts.

San Huberto wins messy Vicomtesse VigierSan Huberto (Speightstown) gained the most

notable victory of his career when coming

out on top in a messy running of the Prix

Vicomtesse Vigier (Gr 2, 3000m) at Chantilly

yesterday. The Fabrice Chappet-trained four-

year-old made the most of his good draw in a

race run at a pedestrian pace as he beat Call The

Wind (Frankel) by three-quarters of a length.

Get Shirty (Teofilo) filled third position another

length away. San Huberto has now won three

times in stakes company.

Wonderful Moon shines againWonderful Moon (Sea The Moon) took his

career tally to four wins in six starts and bagged

his third stakes race when landing the Sparkasse

Kolnbonn Union Rennen (Gr 2, 2200m) at

Cologne. The Henk Grewe-trained three-year-

old beat Grocer Jack (Oasis Dream) by three-

quarters of a length with the same margin back

to Palao (Champs Elysees) in third.

85 for GalileoCoolmore’s supersire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells)

became the most prolific source of Group

1 winners in thoroughbred history when

Peaceful’s (3 f ex Missvinski by Stravinsky)

victory in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the

Curragh on Saturday provided him with his

85th individual elite level winner. Trained by

Aidan O’Brien, the filly beat Fancy Blue (Deep

Impact) by two lengths with So Wonderful

(War Front) another head away in third. Bred

by Coolmore out of the Stravinsky (Nureyev)

mare Missvinski, Peaceful is one of four

runners by Galileo out of Missvinski who

have graced the track. Besides Peaceful they

include Listed winner Easter and dual scorer

El Greco, who now races in Australia under

the name Yulong Emperor. Missvinski has no

two-year-old produce but she is the dam of a

yearling sister to Peaceful and co. The mare is

out of Miss U Fran, a daughter of Brocco (Kris

S), and Miss U Fran is in turn out of Careless

Aly (Alydar), an unraced sister to Cacoethes,

winner of the Lingfield Derby Trial (Gr 2, 1m

4f ), King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f ) and

Belmont Turf Classic (Gr 1, 12f ). Galileo stands

for an undisclosed fee at Coolmore in Ireland.

Seven for Point Of EntryPoint Of Entry (Dynaformer) sired his seventh

individual stakes winner when Admission

Office (5 h ex Miss Chapin by Royal Academy)

struck in the Louisville Stakes (Gr 3, 12f) on

the Churchill Downs turf on Saturday. Trained

by Brian Lynch, the five-year-old beat Arklow

(Arch) by a head with He’s No Lemon (Lemon

Drop Kid) a further length and a quarter

away in third. Bred in Kentucky by his owners

Amerman Racing Stables, Admission Office is

out of the Royal Academy (Nijinsky) mare Miss

Chapin. He is the dam’s second stakes winner,

following Coffee Clique (Medaglia d'Oro), who

captured four graded stakes races. Point of

Entry stands at Adena Springs in Kentucky for

$15,000 (AUS$22,000 approx).

68 for MastercraftsmanFormer shuttler Mastercraftsman (Danehill

Dancer) sired his 68th individual stakes winner

when Masterwin (3 c ex Palace Of Winds

by Monsun)) landed the Premio Emanuele

Filberto (Listed, 2000m) at Milan on Saturday.

The three-year-old defeated Aurelius In Love

(Alhebayeb) by three quarters of a length with

Aldrodovar (Lord Chaparral) another head

away in third. Masterwin was bred by Rosemont

Stud in Ireland and was purchased for €19,000

at Tattersalls Ireland by his trainer Nicolo

Simondi. He is the first winner out of Palace Of

Winds (Monsun), a half-sister to the Beverly D

Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) winner Gorella (Grape Tree

Road), as well as two other winners of stakes

races. Mastercraftsman stands at Coolmore

in Ireland for a fee of €25,000 (AUS$41,000

approx).

Magic Wand returns a winnerGlobetrotting Magic Wand (Galileo) posted her

first win since taking out the Mackinnon Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) when proving to be too classy

for her rivals in the Lanwades Stud Stakes (Gr

2, 1m) at the Curragh on Saturday. The Aidan

O’Brien-trained five-year-old beat runner-up

Hamariyna (Sea The Moon) by four and a half

lengths with Silk Forest (Kodiac) another two

and a quarter lengths away in third. Saturday’s

win was Magic Wand’s fourth stakes success in

her 25 starts to date.

Gladness joy for Lancaster HouseLightly-raced four-year-old Lancaster House

(Galileo) notched his second stakes success in

his five-race career when landing the Gladness

Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at the Curragh on Saturday.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, he beat favourite

Speak In Colours (Excelebration) by two and a

quarter lengths with Smash Williams (Fracas)

another length and three quarters away in third.

She’s A Julie takes Ogden PhippsLongshot She’s A Julie (Elusive Quality) caused

an upset when coming out on top in a tight

finish to the Ogden Phipps Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at

Belmont Park on Saturday night. Without a win

since her victory in the La Troienne Stakes (Gr

1, 8.5f) at Churchill Downs over a year ago, the

Steve Asmussen-trained five-year-old edged

out favourite Point Of Honor (Curlin) by a nose

with Ollie’s Candle (Candy Ride) just a further

neck away in third. She’s A Julie now has five

stakes wins from her 18 starts.

Peaceful's success in Saturday's

Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) saw

supersire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells)

become the most prolific source of

Group 1 winners in thoroughbred history, with

85 of his sons and daughters now having won at

least one race at the top level.

The Coolmore stallion, who has been

crowned champion sire in Britain and Ireland

in 11 of the last 12 years, wrested the leading

sire of Group/Grade 1 winners title from his

former studmate Danehill (Danzig).

The pair had remained tied on 84 top-level

winners apiece since Galileo's globetrotting

daughter Magic Wand landed the Mackinnon

Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on

November 9 last year.

It was supremely fitting that the Irish 1,000

Guineas provided Galileo with his record-

breaking Group 1 victory, as his very first came

in the 2006 renewal, when first-crop daughter

Nightime - now better known as the dam of

Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) - landed the fillies' Classic

for Dermot Weld.

The son of Sadler's Wells, who has stood

for a private fee since 2008, has sired many

of the most recognisable names from recent

European turf history, including Frankel, New

Approach and Australia.

He shuttled to Australia early in his

stallion career and his influence down under

remains evident to this day with three of his

sons - Adelaide, Churchill and Highland Reel

- standing in Australia in 2020, while another,

Rip Van Winkle, flies the flag in New Zealand.

He is also the grandsire of 2018 Melbourne

Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Cross Counter

(Teofilo).

Peaceful (3 f ex Missvinski by Stravinsky)

is already his second Group 1 scorer of the

delayed British and Irish Flat season, after

daughter Love ran out a commanding winner

of the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket.

Four runners by Galileo out of Missvinski

(Stravinsky) have graced the track. Besides

Peaceful they include Listed winner Easter

and dual scorer El Greco, who now races in

Australia under the name Yulong Emperor.

Missvinski has no two-year-old produce

but she is the dam of a yearling sister to

Peaceful and co.

Peaceful is bred on the same Galileo-

Stravinsky cross as the sire's three-time Group

1 winner Rip Van Winkle, who stands at

Windsor Park Stud in NZ for a fee of NZ$12,500.

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING

Lakeshore Eagle (Master Of Design)

soared to a third win on the bounce

and initiated a mid-card four-timer

for Karis Teetan who continued a

flaming streak at Sha Tin yesterday.

While Zac Purton and Joao Moreira are

grinding out the odd win or two, ploughing

through treacle in their battle for the jockeys’

championship, Teetan is on a steaming roll.

In the past six meetings, the Mauritian has

collected 12 victories to Purton’s seven and

Moreira’s four.

“Things are going well and when you ride

winners you get confidence, that’s a big part of

it. Also, there’s the support I’m receiving, you

can't do what I’m doing without the support

and I’m very blessed in that way,” he said.

Teetan’s four came in uninterrupted

succession: Hang’s Decision (Postponed)

followed Lakeshore Eagle, then came Super

Alliances (Zacinto), who rolled into God Of

Dragon (Red Dazzler). The rider ended the day

with 81 wins, three short of his personal best, as

he rounds out a season that has also featured

his marriage in mid-May and a first success in

the International Jockeys’ Championship back

in December.

“It’s taken me a while to figure out how

things work in Hong Kong and I’m still learning

but I watch Joao and Zac, and just watching

what they do and how they ride has helped me

learn a lot. I’m really pleased with how things

are going, particularly looking ahead to next

season,” Teetan said.

Lakeshore Eagle’s impressive score in the

Class 2 Purves Quaich (1600m) also initiated

a race-to-race double for trainer Chris So. The

Australian-bred is another on the naturally

lengthening list of horses to have enjoyed the

tranquil environs of the Hong Kong Jockey

Club’s Conghua facility.

“Conghua has been good for him, the

environment has helped him and a couple

of other horses, like Soccer Master, who has

improved a lot for going there,” So said.

So and Teetan are looking forward to what

next season might hold for the five-year-old.

“I think Lakeshore Eagle has enough in him

to go to Class 1,” Teetan said. “He’s getting better,

he just keeps stepping up and I think there’s a

bit more to come. He’s doing everything right

and the best thing about him is that he’s got that

turn-of-foot when you ask him.”

Teetan was full of confidence at the point

of Lakeshore Eagle’s decisive acceleration, his

bearing and the horse’s easy stride being clear

indicators, and it wasn’t misplaced.

“I was pretty confident the whole way

through because I knew they were going to put

the speed on,” he said.

“I could feel from the 1000 metres that

he was starting to unwind and just before

the straight I squeezed him a little bit and he

responded pretty quickly. It was his first start in

Class 2 and he had no weight; last time it was a

big win with a big weight in Class 3.”

So’s charge took his career tally to six wins

from 12 starts but handler and rider believe he

could be better over farther.

“Next year we’ll maybe step him up to 1800

metres,” So said, while Teetan added, “That

little bit further will just give him more time to

get into the race.”

Teetan and So followed up with Hang’s

Decision who ended an 18-month run of

outs when winning the Class 4 Swaine Cup

(1400m).

“They took the hood off today and it

worked – he’s an old fella and maybe that just

sparked him up, he was in good condition and

we got a nice track through,” Teetan said.

The ‘Mauritian Magician’ then stepped

up to unlock the John Size-trained Super

Alliances in the Class 4 Wong Cup (1200m),

with the three-year-old making a winning dirt

track debut to open his account at start 12.

Teetan’s fourth came in the Class 3 Li Cup

(1800m), an ultimately cosy success atop the

Tony Cruz-trained God Of Dragon.

Cruz followed up in the finale, the Class 3 Ip

Jug (1200m) when Neil Callan urged California

Gungho (Shakespearean) to a short-head win.

That moved the handler’s tally to 54 wins, five

behind trainers’ premiership leader Ricky Yiu,

with eight meetings left.

Red Desert HKJC

Sparkling returnSparkling Knight (Holy Roman Emperor)

took a large stride forward in his development

with a breakthrough win in the Class 4

Macwhinnie Cup (1000m), zipping home in

55.20, just eight-hundredths off the class record.

The four-year-old was no match for the

likes of Aethero (Sebring) and Winning Method

(Holy Roman Emperor) when he stepped out

late last season and then finished out with the

washing early this term before being sidelined

for a long spell.

“He was out for eight months with a knee

problem. He needed that time to recover and

thankfully the owner was patient,” Tsui said.

“The break helped him a lot, the time he

spent here at Sha Tin and at Conghua (between

January and late May), he’s been able to relax

and mature – he’s matured physically and in his

head.”

Sparkling Knight showed speed to control

the lead and when the top-weighted favourite

Fabulous Eight (Dream Ahead) pressed him

at the 400 metre mark, jockey Dylan Mo asked

for more and the gelding stretched five lengths

clear.

“That was much better than I expected but

he had a light weight and the second and third

horses had a lot of weight, so that helped him.

Two weeks ago he trialled well and that told me

he was healthy,” Tsui said of the 22/1 shot.

Arculli RedThe Ronald Arculli-owned Red Desert

(Oasis Dream) was a fitting winner of the day’s

second Class 2 contest, the Arculli Trophy

(1200m), to complete a double for the Size

stable. Chad Schofield drove the four-year-old

to a gusty success from front-runner Highly

Proactive (Coats Choice).

“It’s nice to win that race for Mr. Arculli –

my dad won a QEII Cup (2004, River Dancer)

for him back in the day,” Schofield said. “It’s not

my first winner for him but I’m very happy that

I could win his own race.

“We had a lovely run in the box seat, he got

the gap at the right time and although he had a

perfect run he pinned his ears back and fought

hard to the line so it was a well-deserved win.”

It’s unlikely that Moreira will have an

easier triumph before the season ends than

Chancheng Prince (Carpe Diem) in the

afternoon’s opener after the Francis Lui-

trained grey swept aside his rivals by three and

a quarter lengths.

That Chairman’s Day Plate (1000m) success

took the Brazilian to 127 wins and closed the

gap on premiership leader Purton to two. But

the Australian hit back aboard the Frankie Lor-

trained Chevalier Prince (Rock ‘n’ Pop) in the

Class 4 Chan Trophy (1400m), making it a case

of ‘as you were’.

Antoine Hamelin nailed his 15th Hong

Kong win with a peach of a last-to-first ride on

Impeccable Fellow (Acclamation) in the Class

5 Ryrie Handicap (1400m). The Frenchman

steered the Richard Gibson-trained gelding

through a sweet rail run, switched out in the

home straight and drove on to maintain his fine

form.

The Michael Chang-trained Mega Heart

(Foreplay) took the Class 3 Stevenson Cup

(1200m), his third success on the dirt track.

Apprentice Jerry Chau judged the seven-year-

old’s run to cut down the Moreira-ridden front-

runner Utopia Life (Wicked Style) and hold off

the Teetan-ridden California Concord (Fastnet

Rock).Sparkling Knight HKJC

For Michael Hurry, his journey in racing

began - and continues to this day - on

the hallowed turf that is Flemington

Racecourse.

As a five-year-old, he was perched out the

front of ‘Headquarters’, interacting with the many

punters who would flood into the track.

“My first memory is of selling newspapers out

the front of the main entrance as a kid and then

sneaking in to watch a race after all the papers

had sold. Those were great days,” Hurry recalled

to ANZ Bloodstock News. “Flemington is a place

that is very special to me.”

Hurry is nominated for the highly-prized

Dedication to Racing Award, one of seven

categories that will be recognised at Wednesday’s

2020 Stud and Stable Staff Awards, supported by

Godolphin. The Dedication to Racing Award is

sponsored by the Australian Turf Club.

For Hurry, his life reflects his commitment

to racing. He has held many varying roles, from

stablehand to trackwork rider to barrier attendant

to clerk of scales to his current role as training

track supervisor at Flemington.

“I started as a barrier attendant at about age

16, graduated then to an assistant starter and then

to a starter at tracks all around Victoria,” he said.

“I’m currently track supervisor at Flemington. It is

a great place to work. The early morning time is

unique, before the city starts to wake up; it is very

quiet and still. I once brought a friend to the track

first thing and they said it was similar to being

backstage at the theatre.”

It was there at Flemington that he experienced his greatest moment in

racing: Makybe Diva’s [pictured right] third Melbourne Cup victory.

“She’s my favourite horse,” he said. “She was with me at Flemington

trackwork for all of her Cup wins and I was there for all of them. However,

number three was my best memory. I’ll never forget that day. I was in front

of the clock tower in the straight, when Glen Boss brought her down in

front of the crowd and they were going crazy. It was a great moment in

time, something special; what a great horse.”

Throughout his time in the racing industry, there have been plenty of

hurdles in his way as well: numerous racing-related mishaps, the collapse

of Ansett - where he worked as an aircraft engineer - in 2001, and a battle

with cancer. However, he maintains a positive attitude and remains

grateful.

“I worked for Ansett for 25 years and was there until they folded in

about 2001,” he said. “They were very busy days. It was hard trying to fit it

all in, working for Ansett and with racing, but somehow it worked.

“In racing, I’ve had a broken arm from the barriers, bad hip, broken

fingers and toes, all through working with the horses. And yes, I have

battled cancer - I was diagnosed in 2015 - but I am now very happy to say

that I am cancer free.”

Hurry was nominated by his sister Susan, who says that he deserves all

the accolades that come his way.

“Michael’s loyalty to the racing

industry means a work schedule that

doesn’t fit a nine-to-five week,”

she says. “His devotion to all

things racing has meant a lot

of disruption to his life. He

has a get in, can do attitude

to everything he does.”

The Dedication to

Racing Award winner

receives, from the Australian

Turf Club, a trophy and $10,000,

with $3,000 to their employer to

share amongst staff.

“It is a great honour and privilege to

be nominated for the award and quite humbling to m a k e

it through to the finalist stage,” Hurry said. “I would like to think I am

representing the Flemington track supervisors and also those everywhere

working in this job. It is one which is not without its dangers and ups and

downs, but everyone just gets in there and gets it done.”

The Stud and Stable Staff Awards will be presented during a virtual

ceremony on Wednesday night.
