Thulare Monareng | Fashion Deli

The Fashion Deli is a world-renowned concept store that uses the delicatessen concept to redefine African design and retail, by unconventionally merchandising African-inspired apparel, footwear and accessories in a new and creative way.

Uniquely designed apparel, footwear and accessories are

merchandised in repurposed, vintage Pepsi refrigerators;

t-shirts are folded in ice cream tubs and displayed in ice

cream freezers, or rolled and displayed in Coca Cola crates.

Highly stylized formal shirts are hung in vintage dairy

fridges. Underwear is folded and delectably showcased in

large glass candy jars, footwear is displayed in vegetable

racks. Handbags are encased in fruit crates, bracelets

in vintage gumball machines while rings are presented

as invitingly as the baking cups on cake stands they are

displayed upon.

In keeping with the delicatessen concept, further attention

to detail is paid to the packaging of the merchandise, i.e.

t-shirts are packaged in pizza boxes, belts in bagel packs,

scarves in sandwich wedges, shirts in deli boxes, handbags

in cake boxes and the use of recycled brown carrier bags.

The creation and launch of The Fashion Deli brand strategy,

was conceived to leverage a niche retail opportunity for

cutting edge, ethically produced and sustainable African

designer brands. Thus giving the world a refreshed

viewpoint of African design and retail.

The concept for the Fashion Deli, was conceived by

South African fashion designer and entrepreneur

Thulare Monareng. This retail concept evolved to not

only provide an alternative retail experience for fashion

shoppers seeking something new and exciting, but to

also fill a gap in the market for a unique retail space that

platforms cutting-edge African designers, while providing

consumers with an exciting, experiential and sustainably

conscious retail alternative.

Africa has long been regarded as a mysterious, beautiful

and tragic continent. Acknowledged by world leaders as a

continent of abounding potential. However in recent years

that negative perception has shifted. Africa has evolved,

and is now En Vogue.

The Fashion Deli teaches the world that sustainability,

style and presentation fused with creative interaction is

the way forward. It showcases African design differently

than expected or typified, through fashion as art and

innovative retail.

Social and ethical responsibility is essential to the Fashion

Deli’s retail ethos. The Fashion Deli carefully selects

and works with the most talented, cutting edge African

designers who are committed to sustainable design. This

in turn means that over 90% of the retail stock is ethically

and sustainably produced on the African continent and

merchandised and package in repurposed or recycled

materials. Making it one of the most environmentally

sound retail stores in the world

Thulare Monareng and The Fashion Deli have been featured

in numerous international magazines, newspapers,

television shows, radio interviews, online magazines and

blogs. These include features in O, The Oprah Magazine

in which Thulare Monareng was amongst 21 international

visionaries listed in Oprah Magazine’s 2011 Power List,

The New York Times, Elle, Glamour, WGSN, House &

Leisure, Madame Figaro, Marie Claire, Air France’s inflight

magazine worldwide, CNBC news, and many more.

Based upon the international interest in The Fashion

Deli, the concept store is poised to expand its operation

internationally, by opening its first USA flagship store in

New York soon.
