Like all thrusters in the Wärtsilä Steerable Thruster (WST) series, the Underwater Mountable thrusters have been developed utilising the company’s extensive know-how and experience in thruster design.

Wärtsilä Steerable ThrustersUnderwater Mountable (UWM) Series

The development work has focused particularly on the specific needs of offshore applications in order to provide superior dynamic positioning (DP) and main propulsion performance. The latest computational fluid dynamic (CFD) techniques have been utilised to optimise the design.

The Wärtsilä Underwater Mountable (UWM) Thruster series is designed for use with semi-submersible drilling rigs, drillships and other vessels, such as semi-submersible accommodation rigs, crane vessels and pipe layers, that require thrusters that can be mounted while the vessel is afloat. The UWM series has a high power output of up to 6500 kW, which makes it favourable for use on large offshore construction vessels (OCVs).

Page 32: Thrusters: future-proofing your vessel and investment

The spiral bevel gear-set, which is the heart of the thruster, has been thoroughly reviewed. Not only has the 8° gear angle been included in the gear geometry, the gear application and safety factors have been increased and a high quality gear material has been selected. The pinion is supported on both sides with a new bearing layout that has an increased capacity to accommodate load fluctuations. This has been achieved by applying new roller bearing types in a pre-tensioned bearing configuration.

Pinion Bearing Arrangement

– Extensive measures have been taken to avoid or significantly reduce the effect of load fluctuations. For example, the optimized nozzle and the design of its connections reduce power and thrust fluctuations originating from the rotating propeller.

– Optimal lubrication conditions for the gears and bearings are maintained by the high capacity lubrication system and a redundant propeller shaft seal.

– Optional continuous monitoring of the oil and seals.

Key BenefitsFirst class reliability: Reliability plays an important role in the UWM thruster series.

To achieve a high level of reliability, a series of design features have been incorporated: – The gearset, which is the centre

of the driveline, is designed for smooth running and the optimal transfer of propulsive power.

– The gears and shafts are supported by thoroughly engineered bearing solutions and are enclosed within a sturdy thruster housing designed for stiffness.

With the Wärtsilä PCMS (Propulsion Condition Monitoring Service), the reliability and availability of the thruster can be improved even further. As this service is recognized by the main marine class societies, the thruster overhaul intervals can be extended according to the condition of the equipment. The PCMS is based on a vibration, oil and operational analysis carried out by technical experts from Wärtsilä Services.

High efficiency: The UWM thruster series features the Wärtsilä thruster nozzle to provide excellent bollard pull performance. The propeller, nozzle,

Comparison of thrust availability for a semi-submersible rig equipped with 8 thrusters. The red area shows the thrust availability in case of non-tilted thrusters, the blue area shows the available thrust in case of Wärtsilä Steerable Thrusters with an 8 degree downward tilt. Depending on the angle in which the thrust is directed, up to 35% more thrust is available for the rig equipped with the 8 degree tilted thrusters.

gearbox housing and the nozzle connection, are designed to achieve high hydrodynamic efficiency. In transit free-sailing condition, the Wärtsilä thruster nozzle develops a greater thrust due to its improved power absorption. As a consequence, the need for overspeed is reduced. With three propeller diameter choices and different power levels, the UWM thruster series can offer a tailor-made solution to meet customer requirements regarding, for example, bollard pull or vessel propeller size limitations.

Effective DP operations: The three thrusters within the Wärtsilä UWM series all feature an 8 degree tilted propeller shaft, which has been achieved by applying a gear that includes the tilt instead of a bevel gear set. Extensive CFD calculations prove that the 8 degree tilting of the propeller shaft and the nozzle has several advantages, the chief of which is that the propeller jet is directed away from the hull and other thrusters in the vicinity. In addition to reducing hull interaction losses, this also greatly reduces interaction between the thrusters, thus making the so-called ‘forbidden zones’ considerably smaller. The overall gain in available bollard pull thrust for dynamic positioning operations is about 15% when compared to conventional units.

Due to the optimal alignment of the propeller shaft and the nozzle in the tilted configuration, a higher propulsion efficiency and more overall thrust is provided when compared to solutions with non-tilted nozzles. The combination of more effective DP operations and high overall efficiency results in reduced fuel consumption and lower operating costs.

Compact and with less weight: Detailed FEM analyses have been made to optimize the strength of the components so as to keep the overall weight as low as possible. Additionally, the efficient closed-loop electro-hydraulic steering has compact dimensions and less weight since only a small reservoir is needed for the hydraulic oil. The compact dimensions result in less space requirements in the thruster room and more payload capacity for the vessel.

Easy installation: All necessary interfaces are contained within the thruster well, which can be installed by welding without additional machining. The lubrication and steering hydraulics are delivered in frames with standard interfacing. Field-bus connections are used to connect the thruster and its auxiliary systems to the Wärtsilä Propulsion Control System. The underwater mounting system, the hydraulics, and the controls are all designed to minimize the installation time and efforts of the yard.

Technical Specifications

Page 35: Thrusters: future-proofing your vessel and investment

Wärtsilä Steerable Thrusters

The Wärtsilä Steerable Thruster (WST) has been developed in parallel with the latest operating demands for tugs, river-going vessels, and various offshore support vessels.

The aim, as with all Wärtsilä products and solutions, is to ensure optimal efficiency, high hydrodynamic performance, less maintenance and better accessibility for serviceability. With eight thruster types, ranging from 700 to 3200 kW, the WST enables these vessels to meet and exceed the performance levels required for today’s competitive operating environment. By maintaining outstanding efficiency at different power outputs, the WST reduces costs for owners and operators. The design also allows easier and faster installation, thereby saving time and costs for the yard.

Designed to Meet the Latest Customer NeedsSuperior performance: Large propellers with a tailored design, a smooth housing shape and slender nozzle connections ensure the superior performance of the Wärtsilä Steerable Thrusters. The hydrodynamic design has been thoroughly optimized, with the use of Wärtsilä’s extensive design experience combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capabilities. Since not all vessel performance requirements are the same, the WST comes with a choice of two nozzle types.

– Bollard pull nozzle: A nozzle optimised for bollard pull, providing outstanding performance at zero knots vessel speed.

– Free sailing nozzle: this shorter and lighter nozzle version is designed for free sailing efficiency at speeds of 10-14 knots, whilst keeping good bollard pull capabilities at low vessel speeds.

WST combines its excellent bollard pull capabilities with continuous steering over 360°, to provide maximum thrust in any direction.

Page 36: Thrusters: future-proofing your vessel and investment

Wärtsilä Thruster Nozzle (WTN) optimised for bollard pull

High-speed engine compatible: The Wärtsilä Steerable Thruster fits well with Wärtsilä’s own medium-speed engines and is also compatible with high-speed engines of other brands. With a selected range of gear ratios, all common engine speeds between 750 and 1800 rpm can be accommodated, as well as electric motors with speeds between 720 and 1200 rpm.

Efficiency: A high level of manoeuverability is essential, and the WST is designed to achieve this with an optimal hydrodynamic efficiency. All functionality provided by the individual components of the steerable thruster, the propeller, the engine, the clutch to control the thrust and the steering system is combined in an integrated design that attains overall high efficiency with the desired manoeuvrability. At the same time, the system is simple, straightforward and reliable.

Robust & reliable: Since operational reliability is important, Wärtsilä places high priority on the robustness of all components used in its products and solutions.

Environmental performance: At the same time, the thrusters come with an advanced sealing system that includes functionality for seal monitoring. The Wärtsilä Steerable Thrusters are suitable to be operated in US inland and coastal waters under the US EPA VGP2013 regulations. Compliance is achieved by using either environmentally acceptable lubricants (EAL) or barrier seal solutions, depending on thruster size and propeller type.

Installation flexibility: The WST can be installed and mounted in various ways. These include bolt-in (standard) and weld-in possibilities with easy to install hull fairing. This flexibility, together with the option to incline the thruster to align it with the hull, enables optimal positioning of the thruster with regard to thrust performance and system layout. Mounting from above (can-mounted), below or split mounting allows the yard to optimise the building scheme.

Similarly, the high level of integration eases the installation at the yard.

Compact & integrated: By integrating all the auxiliary equipment needed to operate the thruster, such as the hydraulics for the clutch and the lubrication and steering systems, onto the top plate around the upper gearbox of the mechanical Z-drive system, a truly compact solution is achieved. This means that less thruster room space is needed. The modular design also allows the same compact and integrated layout for thruster variants with controllable pitch propellers that have additional pitch hydraulics. In case of a diesel-electric propulsion system, a thruster configuration with electrical steering and an electric lubrication pump set is available.

Page 37: Thrusters: future-proofing your vessel and investment

Wärtsilä ProTouch Steerable thruster lever and side display

Wärtsilä Steerable Thruster with PTO for diesel-mechanical drive

User friendly controls: The thrust, steering, and auxiliary system functions are all controlled by the Wärtsilä Propulsion Control System. The ProTouch panel design is space saving and designed to allow easier and more intuitive operation of the thruster functions. Installation of the control cabinets, panels and cabling is straightforward since all components of the propulsion control system are interconnected by means of CAN-open buses.

Ice Class: The increasing demand for thrusters with ice class is included in the design of the Wärtsilä Steerable Thruster. Ice Class can be specified for winter sea conditions or to provide extra robustness to withstand impacts, such as from driftwood. The thrusters are compatible with Finnish-Swedish Baltic Ice Class, Russian Ice class (RMRS), and Russian river ice class (RRR). The Finnish-Swedish Ice Class (FSIC) rules are implemented in the rules of many major classification societies.

Wärtsilä ServicesEasier maintenance: The WST has been developed to be maintenance friendly, for example, the seals of both the propeller shaft and the steering mechanism can be replaced without de-assembling the thruster.

The Wärtsilä WST is supplied with a detailed maintenance information document which clearly defines the maintenance task in easy steps for operators.

Wärtsilä can provide spare parts packages which are pre-defined according to the desired redundancy levels by the owner/operator along with the required technical support and field services.

thruster control cabinet (TCU), le-vers, and tailored control panels to interface with the thruster. A pitch to zero system or interfaces to ex-ternal systems can also be config-ured within the LIPSTRONIC®.

z Environmentally friendly: The WTT is compliant with the US Environmental Protection Agen-cy’s (EPA) Vessel General Permit (VGP) 2013 regulation pertaining to discharges to the sea. This is achieved through the use of Envi-ronmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs).

z Integrated hydraulics: Wärtsilä Transverse Thrusters have an inte-grated hydraulics system for lubrica-tion and pitch setting. This integrat-ed system provides greater reliability and simpler maintainability. It can be configured to match requirements for pump redundancy, duplex filters, and resilient mounting.

SHIPYARD BENEFITS z Simplified installation & com-missioning: Each WTT is supplied with an extensive installation and planning instruction document (IPI), which aids the shipyard in the in-stallation of the thruster with data, diagrams, and clear instructions with graphical views. The WTT requires a minimal number of welds to the hull structure, and has fewer pipes to be flushed and installed. No HPU foundation needs to be designed, and only in the case of a DP application for thruster sizes WTT-28 and up, there is a cooler to be connected. The connection to the propulsion control system and panels is via CAN-bus (PCS/ProTouch). The overall compact-

ness and lighter weight compared to conventional thrusters mean that less space is needed. The instal-lation is, therefore, faster and less costly.

z Easier Integration: The integrated hydraulics arrangement saves not only space, but also installation and commissioning time. The hy-draulics are integrated onto the E-motor foundation, with the thruster gearbox functioning as the oil tank, thereby eliminating the conven-tional stand-alone hydraulic power unit (HPU). Being pre-installed, the yard’s involvement in engineering and installation is minimised, as is the testing and adjusting during commissioning.
