Often people ask me what we do in our spare time. I think people have this image that we train all the time. That we never stop being acrobats. This idea always makes me laugh.

Obviously we don’t do acrobatics all the time but acrobatics and art becomes a huge part of

your life.

Having said that, it seems ironic that the next series I will be bringing you is a glimpse into a

day off at Suttons beach with the Circa acrobats.

The Project

Beach acrobatics - recreating an icon.

In 2013 I asked some of the Circa acrobats if they

wanted to help me recreate some of recently discovered, iconic photos of acrobatics on Bondi Beach in the 30’s and 40’s. These photographs

were taken by George Caddy (you can find a link to his story at the back of the magazine). I came

across his work in an article and was instantly drawn to it. It was such a treasure to find a

collection of images documenting acrobatics in Australia. Having recently begun a life of both

circus and photography myself, I thought it would be fun to try to recreate some of these

images.

What was just going to be a bit of fun became much more - a genuine desire to create

something special of our own. The group drove to Suttons Beach, Redcliffe. Together we were a

team of 11 (almost all of the Circa acrobats in town at the time), myself and marketing staff member Elyssa Crooks. Elyssa is even featured on the next page on the far right doing her first

acrobatic move, the bird.

“On the day everyone wore their most vintage-looking bathing suits. We brought printed images of the George Caddy photographs which we studied and recreated all day. For most of the pyramids it was the first time we had ever tried that trick but somehow almost all of them worked.”

“This trick could never quite stay up on the deep, sliding sand. As a result, virtually every photograph features Casey, dashing as fast as he can out of shot after stabilising the trio.”

“Our last shot of the day. The sun was setting, the tide was rising and the acrobats were tired, however we had time for one more shot. This is not a George Caddy reshoot but a Circa original.”
