The Garden and Cafe Open Day starts at 10.30am with a buffet provided at lunchtime. The new community cafe, supported by the north east charity DISC, provides children and families with a healthy home-cooked meal. It will also provide work placements for the centre’s GOALS project, giving adults with learning disabilities training oppor- tunities. The Ladder Centre was established in September 1997 when a group of residents from the Lakes Estate, Ferryhill decided to take action against the lack of facilities for parents and children and formed a Residents’ Association. “The estate was in a terrible situation with some families and children out of control, taking drugs and drinking on the streets, prostitution was a problem in certain areas and children as young as 11 and 12 were on the streets vandalising empty houses and flats,” said Kath Merrington, Ladder Centre Manager. The challenge to improve facilities was then taken up by the Residents Asso- ciation and later by other members of Ferryhill town, now the Ladder Centre. The centre provides a range of community services including a job club, counselling support for drug and alcohol misuse, financial advice offered by Durham County Credit Union, adult education and training as well as a range of children’s activities and groups. Ladder Centre opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, or until 8pm for youth groups, as well as 9am to 12 noon on Saturday mornings. Three years’ funding secured for E-Café Young people receiving certificates following an Outward Bound Course organised by the E-Cafe. Ferryhill Town Council has recently secured £36,000 from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities Fund. Funding will be used to help cover salary costs at the E-Café in Ferryhill, ensuring that the facility remains open for at least the next 3 years. The E-Café, which was originally developed in response to a community appraisal carried out in Ferryhill in 2001, and which identified a strong need for a youth facility in the town provides young people with somewhere to go on an evening and the opportunity to participate in activities which they would otherwise not be presented with, including undertaking accredited work. Always on the look out for new members, the E-Café is currently open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, however with the new funding in place this is subject to change. The Deputy Mayor of Ferryhill, Amy Patchett, was on hand to present bouquets of flowers to two local couples who both celebrated 60 years of marriage on the same day. Her first visit was to William and Elizabeth Allen from Skipton Close. The couple, commonly known as Bill and June, were married at St Luke's Church on 22nd March 1952. Bill was born in Carlton Street Ferryhill Station and attended Ferryhill Station school, while June was born in Cornforth Lane and went to The Broom school, as she moved to Lime Grove Ferryhill when she was 3 years-old. They met when they were still at school and went potato picking on Joe Vaux's farm.Bill, 82, started work in 1944 when he was 14 at Charles Cornforth, Joiners – Decorators – Undertak-ers. He bought the business from Charles in 1963 and changed the name to W.

Bill retired in 1992.June also started work at 14 working in hairdressing in Darlington for 10 years until the family came along. In 1976 she returned to work at Linpac Printers in Aycliffe Industrial Estate for 15 years before retiring in 1991.The sprightly couple have two sons and two daughters, as well as ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Bill said of his life-long partner, “June is a perfect mother and a perfect wife”. The second visit was to Eric and Betty Dodds from Stanhope Close, who were also married on 22nd March, 1952, at Whitworth Hall, Spennymoor.Eric, 79, was born in Barnsley but move to Page

Bank when he was a child. Betty was born in Cornforth Lane. The couple met at school when they were both just seven years-old.Eric left school in 1946 and started at Whitworth Park Colliery as a face-worker. He was there until it closed in 1973, moving onto Tursdale Workshops until 1985.Betty, 79, also started work aged 14 at Sieman's factory in Spennymoor. She then left to work in Leeds as a children's nanny. When she was 18 she returned home after numerous requests from Eric asking her to come back home to be near him.The lovely couple have two sons and one daughter, as well as ten grandchildren and ten g r e a t- g r a n d c h i l d r e n . Betty said, “We are still madly in love with each other and we are so happy to have a wonderful family whose sense of humour is second to none”.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

With reference to the outburst in the March 16th edition of The Chapter, regarding dogs and their owners, it is not surprising that he or she did not have the courage to put their name to it.

The overall content of the letter is not worthy of comment, except to say that it is obviously the product of a sick mind and, as a dog owner myself, I strongly object to being referred to as either a creature or a moron.

Doreen Nevison,Ferryhill

Dear Editor,

I would like to raise a question to any of our Town Council offi cials that read The Chapter. Could they explain how a town that can't provide a supermarket of any size, has no leisure facilities to speak of, has a part time library and no full-time police or fi re station, can charge the 5th highest council tax for a band C property in County Durham?

The fi gures printed in The Northern Echo show the residents of Ferryhill paying higher amounts than Spennymoor, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle - major towns with major employers and facilities within their boundaries. Even Shildon (4th highest) which has the Timothy Hackworth and The Locomotion rail museum, along with a leisure centre and major supermarket, is only £3 a year more.

I presume we all pay the same County Council charge along with police and fi re, so the only differential is the Town Council element, or am I missing something? Perhaps someone could enlighten me on this.

Yours Sincerely,Ian Walton, Ferryhill

Dear Editor,

On Friday 16th March, 2012, a disabled pensioner was seriously hurt in an incident on Market Day, Ferryhill.

Janet Jones (87) was stationary in her mobility scooter at the stall selling food and drink.

At approximately 12pm, a lady carrying a large item, probably a picture frame, bumped into Mrs Jones causing injury to her left leg.

An off duty nurse gave emergency fi rst aid and a stall holder called the ambulance.

Mrs Jones was rushed to Darlington Memorial Hospital where she stayed for two nights before being transferred to James Cook Hospital at Middleborough for an operation which included skin grafts.

The family of Mrs Jones would like to sincerely thank the nurse and the stallholders for all their assistance and their quick response; however, we are bitterly disappointed by the lack of medical assistance/concern from the Doctors’ Surgery at Ferryhill.

We would like a response from the lady involved in the incident with her take on events.

New displays Teen died in ecstasy ‘misadventure’A verdict of misadventure was given last week at an inquest into the death of a Ferryhill teenager. The inquest heard how 18 year-old Gareth Perkins took a lethal dose of the drug before he died on 23rd October, 2011.A toxicology report showed that Perkins, from Lightfoot Terrace, had taken the class A drug

‘of levels associated with fatality’, as well as alcohol and cannabis. Crispin Oliver, deputy coroner for Durham, commented, “This is obviously quite a troubling case because it involves a sad and untimely death of someone who is very young in circum-stances that can only be described as tragic and involving drugs.”

ViVo! sing for EasterLocal choir ViVo! will be holding their Easter Concert in Ferryhill Methodist Church on Tuesday 3rd April at 7.15pm. Tickets are priced at £3 for adults and £2 for children, with all money raised being donated to The Kyran Richmond Fund, for

There are three new adult fiction displays this week at Chilton Library. The first is a collection by author Wilbur Smith, including the novel Elephant Song, which follows one man’s stand against poaching during the rise of the ivory trade in Zimbabwe and his desire for vengeance of the death of his comrade. The second author display this week is by Vince Flynn, which includes the novel Pursuit of Honour. The book begins when a series

of explosions has rocked Washington D.C., killing 185 people; an act of extreme violence that calls for an extreme response from elite counter-terrorism operative, Mitch Rapp and his trusted team member, Mike Nash. For readers who enjoy some historical drama there is also a new display containing stories of women who have changed the course of history. Married at sixteen. A queen at twenty-five. Declared

insane and locked up by the men she adored. Juana "la Loca" - the last true queen of Spain. Juana - daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella and sister to Catherine of Aragon - is a woman ruled by her passions. Told in Juana's voice, The Last Queen by C W Gortner is the enthralling and moving tale of a woman ahead of her time, who fought fiercely for her birthright in the face of an unimaginable betrayal.

Chilton lad to carry Olympic torch

A proud Ritchie who is looking forward to the Olympic honour in June.

Ritchie Howe from Arthut Street in Chilton, who attends Woodham Community Technology College in Newton Aycliffe, has recently been informed that he will be one of the lucky people to carry the Olympic Flame when it passes through the region on 17th June. Ritchie was also informed that he is

the recipient of the under 15 award for being best Sedgefield water polo player in the ASA cup, which was recently held at ManchesterBoth of these successes show that he is a credit to himself and his family and both his parents and brother are extremely proud of his achievements.

Do you remember in days gone byDid you have a go at pin-a-try?

At “Itchy Dabber” could you be beat?Marking the squares out in the street.

No graffiti, chalk was the marker all the wayWashed away on a rainy day

A piece of china (boody) would be foundIf you looked down to the ground

China with flowers were pieces rareBut earthenware used if nothing else there

In the street did you gather when it was fine?Circles you formed, or maybe lines

Chanting and singing the rhymes of the time

Or was it a skipping rope the length of the street?Mother’s clothes line came in a treat

Did you master hand stands against the wall?If you did, you could stand tall

I must admit, a hand stand or the crab I could not masterAt both these skills I was a disasterTop and whip were quite a treat

You moved that top up and down the street

Some were wooden, hand painted, quite niceBut often a bottle top had to suffice!

This is how we spent holidaysIf weather was fine we stayed out all day
