- A c t I I - DAY 6: August 12 - South to Pesaro via San Marino This morning our journey continues to the tiny independent state of San Marino where we’ll have lunch and a walking tour of this historic city-state. Founded in the 4th century AD, San Marino prides itself on being one of the world’s smallest, oldest independent states. The country is tiny, with a total population of around 30,000 people (the city of Rome has more than 2,600,000) and is home to the UNESCO world heritage site Mount Titano, San Marino’s highest point. Our day concludes in Pesaro, birthplace of Rossini. Upon arrival relax and soak up the town's ambience with a traditional passeggiata, or evening stroll in town. Sleep in Pesaro on the shores of the Adriatic at the Nautilus Hotel **** (B, D) ABOUT THE ROSSINI OPERA FESTIVAL

The Rossini Opera Festival is an international music festival held in August of each year in Pesaro, Italy, the birthplace of the opera composer Gioachino Rossini. Its aim, in addition to studying the musical heritage of the composer, is to revive and perform his works in a unique setting that allows collaboration of scholars, artists, and audience. It is often simply referred to as the Pesaro Festival. Performances are given in the 850-seat theater

built in 1818, the Teatro Rossini and, since 1988, the modified "Palasport" sports arena which holds 1,500. Since 2000 another venue, the Teatro Sperimentale (Experimental Theatre), has offered the opportunity to present smaller-scale or minor works by contemporaries of Rossini such as Mosca, Generali, and Coccia. DAY 7: August 13 - In Rossini’s Footsteps This morning we follow in Rossini's footsteps as we explore his charming hometown of Pesaro on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. The highlight of our walking tour is his birthplace, Casa Rossini, an elegant building that is now a museum dedicated to the life of the great composer. We'll spend some time here before having lunch in one of Pesaro's lovely piazzas. After a leisurely lunch we'll take a behind-the-scenes tour of the spectacular venue, the Teatro Rossini Opera House. Originally built in 1818 and renovated over the years, this classical theater hosts the annual opera festival and a regular seasonal theater. We'll return this evening for a performance of the Barber of Seville. Sleep in Pesaro at the Nautilus Hotel (B, L)
