In a few weeks our country will be celebrate its 237th year of Independence. Many have served to protect that independence and the swell of patriotism in recent years is heartwarming. Although the United States isn’t perfect the fact remains that most people of earth, who are kept hungry and oppressed, yearn for our type of freedom. We should not take freedom and independence lightly. The fighting to retain our society has been hard and bitter. We continue to this day to be tested. What prompted me to think about this was an oversight on my part. Last November 13th I received an email from Arlene Evanson with a photo of 14 members of R Square D who attended their Veteran’s Dance. Unfortunately that email and photo fell through the cracks and never got printed. While working on the May issue of FOOTNOTES I happened to come across it, still hiding away in my MSN Inbox. I immediately emailed Arlene with an apology for not printing the photo and asked her to share my apology with those veterans who I so inadvertently slighted. Then I got to thinking. These veterans are part of those who have served to keep me and you free. I can still honor them by printing that picture now, which is exactly what you see below.

Thank you for serving your country. Thank you for keeping me free and preserving the independence of the greatest nation on earth, The United States of America.

Mirror, mirror on the wallLook who’s the fairest of them all! June, 2013 I can hardly believe it until I look in the mirror and note… yes… time has flown by! I have not done the math, but I feel that my time has been equally spent as part of a couple and a solo adult. Life has been good to me; and it certainly has been enhanced by being a square dancer with all of the love and laughter that comes with that association. Many dancers have crossed paths with me through Footnotes and/or registration for a Weekend in Wine Country. It was very nice to be able to greet most every dancer by their first name at the recent May State Federation meeting. Reminded me of years gone by when I first worked in a XXX Barrel on Rainier Avenue in Seattle. Several years later I went to work for Stuart Anderson and his Black Angus chain of Restaurant followed by a brief period with Westin Hotels. I saw many of the same faces during those years and they all were important to me. I feel that the people watching skills I developed during my earlier working years served me well as your Footnotes Co-Editor. Now it is time to play for a while, recharge my batteries by spending some time with my family and non-dancing friends. I look forward to the many summer dances and hope to see you in my square soon. Yellow Rocks! Maggie

This is it! One more month and we will be heading out for the Education and Leadership Seminar at Circle 8 Ranch! As a final reminder I am going to recap what you will be missing if you don’t sign up for the fun! Friday morning you can head out for a morning… in the sunshine of golf with your friends. Just bring your clubs and give Del Chase (509-961-1409 [email protected]) or Mike Edgerly (509-674-5744) a little ringy-ding or drop a e-mail to get your name on the list. Friday evening the dancing starts… Pre-rounds at 7:30 with our Featured Round Dance Cuer Bill Holm along with his lovely wife Karen. At 8:00 pm we start square dancing while alternating with round dancing. This is your opportunity to dance to our wonderful state callers and cuers until 10:30 pm. Saturday morning its coffee and rolls at 8:00 am and at 8:45 we kick off the day. You can choose to learn about Square Dancing’s Big Tent with Don Carlson, Traveling with Square Dancing with Bob and Claudia Amsbury, Keeping Fun

in Your Club with Sheila Kastner and Cliff and myself, Tom Rhode will teach us about the rules associated

to being a club treasurer, Scott Coon along with Andrew Hawkinson will reduce the shake in your boots when it comes to turning on your computer and making it work, and finally Darcy Coon will teach us the “goods and shoulds” about Facebook.

If that morning isn’t enough, at high noon the State Festival 2014 crew will

be serving a “lip smacking” lunch (I hear Italian food is on the menu and donations welcome) followed by the Buzz Session by our State President, Margaret Kiser. Bill Holm and Dee Dee Dougherty-Lottie will be showing us the tricks

and tips with Round and Square Dancing etiquette. Then we wrap up

the day with a dinner break and an evening of dancing with Bill and Dee Dee providing the entertainment. Wakeup Sunday morning to a wonderful breakfast (donations welcome) served up by Circle 8 staff in the main dance hall followed by the Keynote Address with Dee Dee herself. We will take some time to share some ideas, ask a ton of questions and close out the weekend for another year. Remember… this weekend event is not just for Club Presidents, or Council Officers or leaders in your club. It is for everyone who is interested in learning more about keeping square dancing strong and alive in our communities. This educational weekend gives us all an opportunity to share ideas about what is working for your clubs, what you do in your community for fundraisers or community giving, how to advertize, meet new people with different ideas and learn and take action if there is something we can do better for our terrific activity. But most of all to meet new people, make new friendships, and have a great time! Please sign up, mark the date on your calendar for July 12th thru the 14th, 2013, and plan to join us for this fun filled weekend of learning, sharing, friendship and fun! You can use the form below, grab a copy from the state website, www.squaredance-wa.org or pick one up from your Area council. Make checks payable to 45th LEADERSHIP SEMINAR. Hope to see you on the dance floor!

I can hardly believe this is my last article. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed writing them and the feedback has been incredible. I would especially like to thank all the callers who allowed their brains to be picked and for the un-credited quotes they provided. Although this is the June issue, you don’t need to stop reading Footnotes through the summer. Go back and review some of the great information the magazine has. You may get some fresh ideas for the upcoming dance season. June is not the end of the dance season either, rather it’s the beginning. With state festivals, national convention, club campouts and many more events this is the ideal time to develop the friendships you’ve started with your new dancers. I strongly encourage you to invite new people to some of these fun-filled activities. One of the best weekends to bring new people to would be leadership. What a great environment to meet new people and learn new things. Many

newer dancers have no clue as to how our activity is organized and governed. This is a great opportunity for them to discover the ins and outs of their new favorite activity. State fest is another great venue for newer dancers. Large packed floors and clothing vendors are big draws to those who are accustomed to only two or three squares and recycle sales. If your new friends like to travel there are several more dance opportunities to choose from. One of my favorites is the Penticton Peach Fest (yes they still have that). Talk about variety you can dance to over a dozen callers and cuers every night for four nights in a row! The important thing is to get out there and support these events. We don’t want to see them go away! Invite someone new and encourage them along the way. Just maybe this summer you’ll see me … somewhere around the corner!

Can you believe it? it was another wonderful weekend full of dancing and friends for the youth of the Pacific Northwest! This year’s festival boasted an attendance of eight youth clubs from across the Canadian border, to Tacoma, to Moses lake. i was lucky enough to watch our areas top notch round dancers, cuers, callers and square dancers shine as they perform at their best. Though yet again a smaller occasion than we had all hoped, the PNTSdF is still a strong event that many people sacrifice time and energy to keep afloat. As a fundraiser for this year’s festival a "super senior" category was created for all those who wished to relive their days as a competitor. it was a great event and it was obvious that both dancers and the audience found it extremely entertaining! if you get a chance to watch a video of one of these squares i highly suggest it. Videos of all parts of the festival will soon be showing up on YouTube, so please search "PNTSdF 2013" and see our awesome youth in action! Wishing everyone a wonderful, safe, and dance-filled summer!

Membership & Insurance

Greetings!

There has been a huge critical change in the by-law requirements for individual and club renewals. As always we have asked that the renewals be returned to us by May 31st to give us time to validate them. Then there was essentially a grace period that ran beyond the August 31st insurance expiration date to the Winter State Meeting at which point a club would be dropped if they had not renewed. The by-laws have been changed to remove the grace period to comply with the insurance expiration date. In other words, A ClUB WHiCH HAS NOT COMPlETEd THEiR ENTiRE RENEWAl PROCESS BY SEPTEMBER 1ST Will BE dROPPEd FROM THE FEdERATiON AT THE FAll STATE MEETiNG. We have been asked to serve another year as your Membership and Insurance Chairmen. We feel like we spend too much of our time in these articles harping on rules and regulations, so we’d like to finish this year off and start the next year with a little tidbit of information about us. In 1991, Richard (from Kansas) and Barbara (from Washington) met at the Salt Lake City National Square Dance Convention. A year later we were married and Barbara moved to Kansas. In 1994 we moved to San

Angelo, Texas for Richard’s job. In 1998 Barbara’s father passed away in Spokane and Richard was able to transfer to Spokane with AT&T, continuing to square and round dance the entire time. In the last 12 years we have seen our kids raised, married, and grand-kids added to our family. In 2006 Barbara was diagnosed with breast cancer. After five years of cancer treatments she was declared cancer free and remains so to this day. Barbara works as a Clerk Substitute for Spokane Public Schools and enjoys MOST all of her assignments. Richard retired in 2001 from AT&T after 36 years (right before 9/11, NOT a good move), but everything has worked out. In February of this year he had a total knee replacement and has scheduled the other knee for next year. He hopes that he will be able to continue to hunt, fish, garden, walk the dogs, and ‘dance’. Richard, being a Kansas farm boy, says never underestimate the innovativeness of a farm boy. A group of farm boys let three goats loose inside their high school. Before turning them loose, however, they painted numbers on the side of the goats: 1, 2, and 4. School administrators spent all the next day looking for number ‘3’.

Take care, Richard and Barbara

Summer has finally arrived! Summer brings with it some good things and some not so good things. The first thing that comes to mind for the good things are the great dancing opportunities. In looking through my May issue of Footnotes I saw some great dance weekends advertised, our upcoming State Festival and the 45th Annual Leadership Seminar at Circle 8. Circle 8 will also have some great dancing every weekend during the summer. The not so good things would including the hot weather that always comes with summer plus the fact that some clubs don't dance during the summer. But the good out ways the bad! It's still not too late to register for the State Festival here in Kennewick. We will have some great square dancing in a large air conditioned convention center to Jerry Junck and some of the great callers here in Washington. And, if you round dance, we will have T. J. & Bruce Chadd who will offer some great workshops and dancing along with some of your favorite cuers from Washington. Come join the fun. The New Round of the Month for June

has just been selected. It will be "Sam Again" a Phase 2+1 Waltz by Vern Meinz with help from Randy Wulf. The music is a vocal by Olivia Newton-John. The other two dances sent out for consideration were "Honeymoon" a Phase 2+1 Waltz by Dorothy Sanders and "My Moon" a Phase 2 Waltz by Doris & Ted Palmen. The music for "My Moon" is an instrumental version of Allegheny Moon.

Many stitchers who make dance clothes try to use polyester-cotton blends. The combination of polyester and cotton results in a comfortable breathable fabric that needs almost no ironing. Very few poly-cotton prints are being made any more because everyone is quilting. There is an endless array of 100% cotton quilting fabrics, but they have to be ironed. The more expensive cottons are wrinkle resistant but still require ironing. For a change consider easy care synthetic fabrics. Many people say they don’t want a polyester outfit because it is too hot. They are basing their opinion on the old polyesters. Today's fabrics, made with new techniques, are very different from the stuff that was made into leisure suits. I have a light polyester crepe blouse and skirt set that is perfect for travel because it can not be wrinkled. My husband's matching shirt is poly-cotton broadcloth for the body and sleeves with crepe on the yoke and cuffs. The most important factors when selecting fabric are washability, comfort and wrinkle resistance. The first test, before purchasing the fabric, is to grab a corner and hold it crumpled up tight in your fist for 15 seconds. Let go and give it a

shake. Do the wrinkles fall out? Then read the label on the end of the bolt. Stay away from those dreaded words “dry clean only”. The second test is for crocking, the fabric business term for dye that rubs off. Take a small piece of white fabric and rub it hard against the fashion fabric. If color comes off on the white fabric there is excess dye in the fashion fabric. It will need to be washed carefully to make sure that all the excess dye is out before the garment is made. Wash all fabric before putting it in your fabric collection. Then it is ready for the scissors when you are ready to start the project. The fashion fabric may change color and/or texture in the washing and you may decide not to use it in the way you intended. You don't want the color, size or feel of the fabric changing after it has been sewn into a garment. Let the fabric talk to you. Hold it, fold it, smell it and rub it on the inside of your elbow. I had one purchased blouse that smelled funny. No matter how many times it was washed, it smelled funny. If tender skin inside your elbow tells you the fabric is scratchy, it will not make a garment to be worn next to the skin. Take the fabric to your pattern collection and

see which pattern looks like a good match. If the piece looks and feels like it would make a blouse, then make a blouse out of it. We often find pieces of fabric at garage sales or second hand stores at a great price, but no idea of fiber content. Even in fabric stores some bolts are labeled “unknown origin”. If the fabric has been in your fabric stash a while you may have forgotten what it is. Knowing the content of the fabric may help you decide how to use the fabric. Many of the new synthetic fabrics are very difficult to tell from real wool or silk, but they are much easier to care for. To test the fabric you will need a pair of tweezers, a flame and a glass dish. Cut a one inch square of fabric, while holding it over the glass dish with the tweezers and set it on fire. Watch it burn, smell the smoke and look at the ash. If the fabric is made from a combination of fibers the following results will be mixed.

Cotton, flax, ramie, rayon and linen - ignites and burns quickly, smells like paper or wood burning, leaves a light feathery gray ash like wood. Wool, mohair, cashmere and alpaca - harder to ignite, self extinguishing, smells like burning hair, the residue is black, irregular and crushes easily. Silk - fuses, melts and ignites quickly, smells like burning hair but not as strong as wool, leaves a black irregular bead that crushes easily. Nylon, acrylic, polyester - tend to melt and drip while burning, have a chemical smell, leave a hard dark or tan blob instead of ash. For your new outfit, pick an unusual fabric or color. One you wouldn't wear anywhere, except on the dance floor. Part of the fun of dancing is dressing up. Step out on a dance floor in a one-of-a-kind creation that shows your light hearted side.

BlUE MOUNTAIN COUNCIl

TRI-CITIES CIRCULATORS are only dancing on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The 1st Thursday is party night, the 3rd is workshop.

Thelma Swanson, 509-539-2660

Since the State Square Dance Festival will be held in the Tri-Cities, a lot of PRAIRIE SHUFFLERS have been busy with the preparations. We do hope you will come and enjoy the dancing, the camaraderie, the excellent callers, and the vendors who will all add to your weekend. But before the Festival, the Shufflers will be hosting Craig Abercrombie to call for their June 1st dance, and Bill Holm will do the cueing. This is a dance worth attending because both are real pros. Although we will be dark the next 2 dance nights (June 15th and July 6th) we do have two summer dances. The first is July 8th where we will host Jim Hattrick, and the second is July 20th where Adam Christman will call. Bill Holm will be cueing both dances. It looks like a good summer ahead. Both August dances are cancelled, but we will be back in September - see you then!

Ginger Vetrano, [email protected]

The MUddY FROGS were still hopping in to the Milton Freewater Community Center on Sundays to complete their mainstream lessons. Only one of our new dancers completed this session and is to be honored on June 3rd.

Backing up to the day of this writing; on Saturday night April 20th several of our members travelled to Elgin to attend the performance of “Grease” at the Historic Elgin Opera House. It was a most enjoyable evening, even though they had to travel through fresh snow on the return to Milton-Freewater. (The weather added an extra hour of driving time!) On Friday April 26th Frogs and Family a-Fair drove to Baker City for the Elkhorn Swingers 34th Annual Spring Fling. It was a fun weekend. The first weekend of May Frogs helped host the Washington State Square & Folk Dance Federation Spring Meeting. The 3rd Weekend of June we’ll be helping with the 61st Annual Washington State Square Dance Festival. A few of our dancers will then be heading to Oklahoma. This will be a very busy month. Please reserve the 3rd weekend in August for the Muddy Frogwater Festival and our square dance weekend. Don Cochrane and Willie Sewell will be calling that event. Yellow rocks!

M

COlUMBiA RiVER SQUARES have just one dance in June on the 8th with Steve Noseck and Bill Holm. Steve is close to the best caller we have under contract for the whole year. Last year when he was our caller we had a huge dance. The 61st Annual Washington State Square Dance Festival is this month, June 14th & 15th. It is at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick, adjacent to the Toyota Center. There will be a lot of callers and cuers, the featured ones are Jerry Junck and T. J. & Bruce Chadd. There will be lots of vendors and several dance halls with Square Dancing thru level A-1 and Round Dancing through phase V. There is something for everybody including beginners. Even if you are not registered you can still go. The last state festival here was in 1994, so if you don’t attend this one, it may be a long wait to have one in our area again. Enjoy your dancing. God Bless you all… Yellow rocks!

MElOdY MiXERS: Summer is now here. We will continue to dance every Tuesday that the high temperature for the day is less than 95 degrees. Our tentative schedule is regular workshops and dancing on Tuesday, June 4th, 18th and 25th. June 11th will be our Party Dance night when we dance all of your favorites. And, of course, don't forget our State Festival weekend on June 14th & 15th with a Trail End dance on Thursday night June 13th. We will again be going to Colorado, leaving on July 15th and not returning until about August 9th.

committee for the state festival in June. They know you will be delighted to see that Dave and Bonnie Harry are bringing their “store” Petticoat Junction to our corner of the state. Family a-Fair has a fantastic “Live Music” dance planned for their August Anniversary. Watch for the flyers. Happy dancing… see you soon.

BlUE MOUNTAiN COUNCil wishes to thanks all of the Washington and Oregon dancers and delegates that attended the Washington State Federation Meeting in Milton-Freewater. We had a different format for the dinner and breakfast meetings and it worked very well. Friday and Saturday night there were eight squares of dancers plus some non dancing guests. Caller Jim Swanson and Cuer Lorna Hayden donated their time and talent for two great evenings. Cuer Tina Allaway shared the stage on Friday night with Lorna. It was great fun having so many round dancers in the hall. Callers Jim Swanson, Willie Sewell, Oren Gaskill, Bob and Gabe Gianniny all had the opportunity to “strut their stuff ” both evenings. There was some impromptu 4 part harmony on Saturday night that sounded very professional. That’s as good as it can get! We all had a great time. If you were there, we thank you for coming. If you missed the dances, not to worry, Willie Sewell will be back in Milton-Freewater the 3rd weekend in August. Weekend in Wine Country the 61st Annual Washington State Square Dance Festival is right on schedule. The Committees had a final walkthrough on May 6th and was pleased with the results. Things are going smoothly in all areas and we look forward to seeing many of you June 14th and 15th at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick.

CENTRAl AREA COUNCil enjoyed dances at clubs in the Council, as well as special events like Gateswingers' Spring Sashay and Plus Weekend, and Apple Blossom. We'll be having our 5th Saturday dance on June 29 at the Yakima Valley Square Dance Center in Moxee with Daron Tandberg calling and Jim Dobbs cueing. Hope to see many of you on the floor with us. We will certainly see you at State Festival, Leadership, Circle 8, and any other dances we can get to. Meanwhile, have a wonderful summer, safe travels wherever you go, and we'll "see you in September."

Carel Edgerly, [email protected]

The BlUE AGATES are proud of our new dancers who recently graduated and are looking forward to dancing with them in the future. A special graduation ceremony was held at our last regular dance on May 10th with Daron Tandberg calling and Cyndi Silicki cueing. On May 11th we caravanned to the Pi-R Squares in Kent and danced to Steve Noseck. Another big round of thanks goes to all who attended our Anniversary Dance in April. We had 95 people in the hall and had to dance in shifts when we discovered the floor will accommodate only nine squares--and that only by shifting heads and sides down the middle. Our lovely Grange Hall was bursting at the seams. It was wonderful! And a special highlight of the evening was the presentation of a Spirit Award to Dennis and Sally Noble, recognizing their many years of work and support of the club. Our President-elect Gene and Linda Muren will host Spring Fling dance on their lawn on Sunday, June 2nd, with a barbeque and potluck. Our regular dance June 14th is canceled for State Festival, and we go dark over the summer, but plan to hold some workshops and attend State Festival, Leadership Seminar, and other dances around the area and at Circle 8 Ranch.

Sally Gililand, [email protected]

The GATESWiNGERS do not dance June through August except for special dances. But please visit us for our special summer dance, ‘Sunshine and Shades’, to be held July 27th with Dave Boggs of Moses Lake doing the calling and our own Cyndi doing the cueing. There will be a prize for best ‘Sunshine’ outfit… And also a prize for best ‘Shade’ outfit; but you will have to figure out how to dress for that one.

May was a good month for the SilHOUETTE dANCERS. Our class is progressing really well and it is almost time for graduation. What a joy to get new members in our club. Of course we had our Trail-In Dance on May 23. With Debbie Taylor cueing you know we had a great time. She always has interesting workshops - and sometimes frustrating - but that just gets our BRAIN working a little harder!!!! Seeing all our friends again is always something we look forward to. Our next big dance is Mid-Summer Nights that is held the third weekend in July. We dance phase 3 and higher. We invite you to come and join us. The ad is in the Footnotes and you can see it on the website. We are looking forward to seeing everyone. We will be dancing this summer and our schedule will change for the three months. Come dance with us if you are in the area soaking up the sunshine.

CENTRAl PUGET SOUNd COUNCil wishes everyone a happy and safe summer and a wonderful 4th of July. Congratulations to the incoming State Officers. We wish you all a very successful year. Our CPS Council's Officers will be President, Dick Beham; Vice President, Pat Hoot; Treasurer, Tom Rohde; Recording Secretary, Thal Critchfield; Corresponding Secretary, Earlene Beham; Director #1, Aileen Kappenman; Director #2, Jan Emerson; Area Delegate, Ron Hoot; and State Area Nominating, Lewis Cato. Our Spring Council Dance on March 30th was a BLAST. We applaud Madalyn and Lewis Cato for planning a wonderful dance! This is the dance where our Council presents the Jack Willison Memorial Award to a deserving couple in our Council. We send our congratulations to Teresa and Larry Snider on being this year’s recipients. They are a very hard-working couple in our Council. Hope to see everyone at the State Festival in Tri Cities, WA.

Pat Hoot, CPSC Vice President, [email protected]

BOOTS & lACES have been busy with our annual meeting where we were able to come up with officers for the coming year. Many “thank yous” to the outgoing officers: President, Diana Aldrich; VP, Ron & Pat Hoot; Secretary, Paula Chapler and Treasurer, Marlynne & Jerry Olson. We are a small club and will be looking forward to trying some new ideas after the 2013-14 officers have a chance to meet together and do some brainstorming. New officers are President, Ron & Pat Hoot; Vice President, Carl & Chyrll Coscorrosa; Treasurer, Marlynne & Jerry Olson; and Secretary, Janet Emerson. We enjoyed our caravan to Pi-R-Square’s Silent Auction Dance on April 27th. They had many interesting items to bid on as well as some experienced dance clothes and some plants for sale. We are looking forward to our caravans to the Swing Nuts in May and to Wagon Wheels in June. Some of our members are planning to attend the State Festival in Kennewick and Leadership Seminar. Let’s all have fun dancing this summer.

Pretty soon the BUCKSKiN KidS will be on Summer Break. Parents are constantly looking for things to do with their kids over the summer. Much like

adult square dancers our wee ones like to dance too. YOUNG BUNCH dances all summer on the 2nd Friday of every month at Collins Grange so you can find us there a lot. Since we are a preteen square dance club, we will be looking for mainstream dances, level dances and workshops for our kids. We will be looking for clubs that we know are more apt to be able to handle our age group of club members. We will be doing our best to promote preteen square dancing during the summer as well. It might behoove the preteen/teen clubs to think about having several “FREE” tastes of square dancing throughout the summer. I know Ashley has at least one friend who would be willing to come with us to dance and give it a try. I have been talking to other preteen parents and their kids also have friends who would like to give it a try. The FREE part is for the new dancers. See they get in FREE for giving square dancing a try. We hope everyone has a super summer. Remember to get out and dance . . . because if you don’t use it you lose it. Keep those dancing skills up for next season! See ya’ll on the flip side of summer. Yellow Rocks!

Leslie Young, [email protected]

Well, as a teen club, our dance season is officially over. MAVERiCKS have spent months working on our squares, rounds, calling and cueing, going out to clubs to sell badges, fundraisers to help support our club and promote square dancing as a whole and now we relax for three months, then start it all over again. Our club, along with many other clubs from Washington, Oregon and Canada, competed in the PNTSDF (Pacific North West Teen Square Dance Festival) this last month and all did (an) amazing (job). From Preteens (basic) all the way up to Senior (Plus) and even the fundraiser of Super Senior (our parents who competed in mainstream and advanced) did amazing jobs and everyone should be proud of how it turned out. Coaches, Parents and Dancers should be proud of what was done at Competition. And for those who aged out this year, we will miss you! For those coming back next year, good luck and have fun. If someone asked me or any teen why they wanted to be part of competition or why they think more people should be involved, what do you think they would say? Because we get to beat other squares and get trophies? Maybe, but the reason I do it is because it is one big family reunion. Friends you don’t get to see all the time get to spend an entire day with you and you get to have some good-hearted friendly competition. See, if you don’t win, you may be sad for a little bit, but then you realize that you are really happy because your friend won and you get to see them walk up on stage and get a trophy and be happy. There are so many awards to get. No one walks away without a trophy and without feeling proud of themselves. That is why I love competition and why I believe that all teens need to be involved. If you have never been to the Teen Competition, I urge you to attend. The

next two years are up in Canada, but after that we are back down in the States again. We thank everyone who has ever bought a badge from a teen; coached a square; round dance couple; caller or cuer; our parents and grandparents who drove us to and from practice between two and three nights a week; competition judges; and our Coordinator this year, Michelle Thompson, for doing everything she did while going through a hard time in her personal life with a family member being diagnosed with cancer; club advisers and anyone else who has supported a teen dancer or club over the past 63 years!!! Competition would not be possible without you and it really means a lot to us teens. And even though we may not say it much, we are really glad you do what you do; say what you say and who you are. You make a huge impact in our lives whether you see it or not! And even though our dance season is officially over, you can bet you will still see us around. Many of us teens go to Lac-A-Do in Lacy during the summer to dance and if we are not seen there we can be seen in large numbers at Circle 8 Ranch in Cle Elum. We enjoy dancing and going camping and spending time with our friends and families. Either way, you will see us smiling and having a good time, doing what we love with the people we love.

Tiffany Garboden

The Pi-R-SQUARES had a great time in April. Our dances were great and our caravan to the Wagon Wheels on April 20th was a very fun dance. Wayne Easton always calls a fun-filled dance. Sue Weber was the guest cuer – Sue is a great cuer. Lonnie Sewell signed in on the guest side of the sign-in sheet and our sheriff, Terri Kelley, fined him! This started a big fuss with lots of fines. Even Wayne got into the act! Our second dance of the month was on April 27th which was our annual Auction Dance. We had smoked salmon, pies, brownies, plants, slightly worn clothing, gift certificates for many restaurants and merchants, brunch for 4, rides in a limousine, Lakeside Dinner and Cruise, aprons, and pillows for all 12 months, etc. It was a fun evening. We only have one dance on the 2nd Saturday in June for Pi-R’s and invited guests to install our officers and have a fun dinner with a little square dancing. The Pi-R Campout will be at the KOA RV Park in Castle Rock from July 26th thru July 28th. Lots of activities are planned. Come dance with us any 2nd and/or 4th Saturday at the Meridian Grange in Kent from September through May.

Terry and Marilyn Quinett,[email protected]

The SOlO SQUARES will be graduating four students in June. Three of them are “Retreads” that are returning to Square Dancing. The fourth is a first time dancer. All of our students were invited to attend our Mainstream dances. Last Sunday our new-dancer stayed for the Mainstream dance and was able to dance several tips. She needed a bit of help, but the “Angels” on the floor helped

her through the steps she hadn’t learned yet. She had a great time and really enjoyed dancing. This is just another example of the camaraderie that is present with Square Dancers. We had a General Membership Meeting on April 21st and elected some new Officers. They will be taking Office by the end of the month. Our long-time President has stepped down but will continue as Club delegate at the CPS Council meetings. I was elected to step up into her shoes. We also added a new Vice President and Secretary. We will still be holding dances on the 1st and 3rd Sundays all summer long. Square dance attire is acceptable, but not required. Couples and singles from all clubs are welcome to join us. Coffee, tea, water and finger food will also be available. Our dances are held at the Cedar Grange in Maple Valley from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. We will be holding Club dances on May 5th and May 19th. Our May 5th dance will be a Student Level Dance with Cliff calling steps 1 – 40 or to floor level. We will have our Summer’s Coming Dance on June 2nd and our Silly Tie Dance on June 16th. All the summer dances will be posted here and on the CPSC newsletter during the coming months. We helped serve lunch to the judges and other volunteers at the Teen Festival on May 4th 2013. The Rainier Council handled the dinner meal. For those of you who are fairly new to Square Dancing, our Club name implies singles only. Initially that’s how the Club was created. Now we are a singles and couples club due to the shortage of available dancers. We’ve kept the name, but the game has changed.

WAGON WHEElS enjoyed our May 4th Cinco de Mayo Dance as well as celebrating our “45th” Anniversary Dance on May 18th with a Caravan from Phils & Philies to help us in our festivities. We also welcome the Boots & Laces who will be caravanning to our Ice Cream Social Dance on June 1st. (At the time of this writing) We are also looking forward to our Mystery Caravan on May 11th and “wonder where in the world” we will be going – maybe we will be visiting your dance that evening! I will write about our Mystery Caravan in the September issue of Footnotes as this is my last writing for the 3 months of summer! Wagon Wheels has a busy summer planned. Some of the dancers will be attending our State Festival in Kennewick on June 14th and 15th, as well as attending our National Square Dance Convention in Oklahoma City, OK from June 26th thru 29th. For those dancers who will not be in Oklahoma, some of them will be working at our annual Fireworks Stand located on the Benson near Golden Steer Restaurant in Kent from June 27th thru July 4th. We also have a Club Campout planned in Montana as well as our Club Picnic in August. If you are in the Kent area on June 1st, please come and join us on our last dance of the season – our Ice Cream Social Dance with Wayne Easton calling and Randy Wulf cueing at the Meridian Grange.

The past several months have been bitter sweet for all our friends in the EVERGREEN COUNCil. Among the “sweet” was the highly successful Tri–Council dance hosted by the Evergreen Council. We had 36 squares in attendance! It was truly an energetic and fun filled evening. To acknowledge the up-coming loss of one of our council clubs, the Jeans and Calico, dance attendees were given black ribbons to wear. Later in the evening Evergreen Council President Scott and Kathy Donmoyer, presented the Jeans and Calico’s long time club presidents, Mike and Linda McBride, with a planter and a corsage.

Our council was pleased and honored to have Washington Federation President couple, Margaret and Kris Kiser, as guests for the dance. We are also pleased to welcome a new member to the council board, Dale Smith. He will assume the responsibility of Vice President in September when we install our officers for the next dance year. The remaining officers represent a number of highly experienced and dedicated people. Assuming officer positions in the fall are the following individuals: Colleen Sawyer, President; Janet Bellcoff, Secretary-Treasurer; Betty Toops, State

Nominating; Teresa Hill, Area Delegate. Attending the Jeans and Calico’s final dance on April 13th was especially “bitter sweet.” In keeping with the generous spirit of the club members and their caller and cuer, Bill and Neva Reid, the evening was a benefit dance for Scott and Kathy Donmoyer. Scott has been battling cancer all year. He and Kathy will be returning to Hawaii for another visit. (Scott claims it is one place where he is warm!) They are really looking forward to the trip. All of the proceeds from the evening,

including the caller and cuer fees and a silent auction, were donated to the Donmoyers so that they can have some extra “spending money” to do some very special activities. The dance itself was a walk down memory lane with decorations from previous dance events, scrapbooks, special songs, and wonderful people. It will be hard to imagine not attending the outstanding dances they put together twice a year—and did I mention the fabulous food the ladies always brought to the dances? How sad to lose such a wonderful club! How we hope their members will continue dancing with other groups! Although the council has lost one of its clubs, we continue to provide activities for our council members. We are looking forward to two dances this summer. The first is June 29th at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing. The second dance is August 31st at the Square Dance Center. Bill Reid will be the caller, and Neva will do the cueing. Now is a good time to get these dates on your calendar so that you will be sure to attend two great dances!

Greetings to all from the BUZZiN’ BEES. I am writing this just after we celebrated our club’s 55th anniversary. We really enjoyed the party. Thank you Bill Lundin for calling and Debbie Combs for cueing the all Gospel song dance. We also had a visit earlier in the month from two old friends – Gary Davis (Ginger’s husband) and Ann Crowley-Hash. Gary is back to working tugboats on the Columbian, so we hope to see him at a dance every now and then. Ann was here visiting from Virginia. It was great to see them healthy and happy. We will only be having one dance in June before we go dark for the summer. We will have our Tailgate Party on June first with a BBQ potluck prior to the dance. All are welcome. Let’s eat at 6:30, and pre-rounds will start at 7:30. Come dressed in tribute to your favorite sports team. We plan to be visiting clubs that are still dancing during the summer in July and August. Also, in August the Bee’s annual picnic will again be at Ann Heikkinen’s family cabin on the Washougal River on August eleventh. The last few years we have been rained on during the picnic. I am praying for hot and sunny. The Bees’ wish you a great summer. Hope to see you in a square.

Debbie Broers

The HAPPY HOPPERS have experienced a terrific dance year. A number of events including a great New Year’s Eve party, a fun filled anniversary dance, visitations to all the clubs in our Evergreen Council, and several heart warming charitable activities are all recorded in our memories and photo albums. Among those memories will be our visit to the Jeans and Calico’s final dance. Over the years we have enjoyed their tremendous hospitality and fabulous dances. It is very sad to think of the loss of such a great club and the opportunities to

dance together with such fine people. Now our club will be going “dark” for the months of July and August. Our members, however, will still be out dancing and making new friends at such upcoming activities as the National Square Dance Convention in Oklahoma City, the Oregon Summer Festival, the Central Oregon Roundup and the Mid Summer Stomp at the Clark County Square Dance Center. We are especially proud of some of our club members as well as our caller, Jim Hattrick, who are part of the River City Riders. Some of them will be performing at the National Convention in June. We are so lucky! On May 4th the “horses” will perform at our Hopper dance. We can only imagine the countless hours they spend perfecting their routines. Kudos go to Jolene and Ed Cummings from the River City Dancers who coordinate events and transport many of the horses from place to place. What dedicated dancers! Two of our club members are not only dedicated dancers, but also versatile. In addition to round and square dancing, Tom and Liza Halpenny teach and are quite involved in Scottish dancing. Their group performed at our April 20th dance. They demonstrated two forms of Scottish dance: a slower form called

the strathspy and a more vigorous form called a reel. It was a delightful demonstration! Although our dancers will be scattered around the area attending other events this summer, there is one place where we always enjoy

coming back together—our annual club picnic in August. For the past several years we have enjoyed Don and Joanne Oja’s hospitality. They have the perfect space for relaxing, eating, and visiting. Before we know it, the summer will be over and we will be back to dancing on September 7th. Our lessons will resume on September 9th. We have been so pleased with the four by eight format that we will continue to use it as our lesson schedule. A number of our students have already told us that they are looking forward to seeing us again in September, and we are looking forward to dancing with them again, too.

It was the End of an Era: Saturday night, April 13, 2013, was the last dance for our local Goldendale square dance club, JEANS ANd CAliCO. We had over eight squares there! There were dancers from: Swap & Swing in The Dalles, Oregon; Gorge Plus in Hood River, Oregon; Red Rock Squares in Redmond, Oregon; Valley Squares in Aloha, Oregon; Checkerboard Squares in Portland,

Happy Hopper members gather for the Jeans and Calico’s “Last Dance.”

Oregon; Happy Hoppers in Vancouver, Washington; Buzzing Bees in Hazel Dell, Washington; and of course, Jeans & Calico. It was a great turnout and a very gala event! We would like to thank all who were there to help us bid farewell to our club. We also want to thank all the clubs who supported us in the past. We had many wonderful and fun filled dances with their support! We will miss the social aspect of gathering with all the dancers who came to Goldendale to dance! We will continue to dance; it will just not be here in town. Some additional history on how we got to where we are today. After the Golden 49’s closed down in the late 50’s, people who lived in the Goldendale area danced in The Dalles, Oregon, with the Swap & Swing Club. In 1974, a square dance club was formed again in Goldendale; it was named Jeans & Calico. The first caller was Arnold (Dorinda) Harding followed by Lee (Mary) Mauroni calling and cueing in 1983 through 1993. Bill and Neva Reid served as our caller and cuer from 1993 to 2013. The club joined the Washington State Federation and the Evergreen Council in 1978. We will be seeing all of you in a square somewhere, so be looking for us! All the dancers from Jeans & Calico are signing out.

Mike and Linda McBride, the Prez of the Jeans and Calico

The SilVER STARS are now dancing on the second and fourth Saturdays at the Hazel Dell Grange. Chuck Garner is our caller, and Dorothy Lowder is our club cuer. We have had our elections now and next year’s officers are: President—Dale and Nancy Smith, Vice President—Colleen Sawyer, Secretary—Tonya Sinclair, Treasurer—Teresa and Mark Hutchins, Delegate at Large—Bob Fisher, Council Delegate—Scott and Teresa Hill. Our best wishes to them as they embark upon a year of leading our club.

MOUNT BAKER COUNCil extends congratulations to all the newly graduated dancers joining this fun activity. We hope you all have a great summer dancing and getting to know the members in the clubs you have joined. Be sure to check out the club reports below for special dances being held over the summer months. Come September, we’ll provide more information about our next council dance being planned for Sunday, September 29 from 2-5 pm at the Skagit Valley Grange on Cook Road. Mark your calendars and ask the clubs in your area about advance tickets.

An authentic Hawaiian Luau dinner and dance was RAiNBOW SQUARES last club activity of the 2012-2013 regular dance season, and was a really fun time with several clubs caravanning in! Thanks to Jean & Pete Hauck and Joan & Alan Yoder for the great Hawaiian menu and to everyone who helped cook and serve and clean up after! All of us at Rainbow Squares would like to extend a big "Thank You!" to all the visitors from other clubs that helped make this last dance year a success. We really appreciate, and feel blessed, having Brent & Therese Mawdsley as our club caller for 25 years now! Thanks to all of our angels who come out to help with new students during lessons, and to Oren Gaskill for teaching the lessons each year! Also, a big thank you to the new dancers for joining our fun club after graduation! We look forward to next dance season with our lessons starting on Tuesday, September 24th from 7-9 PM, at the Ten Mile Grange, Lynden. Have a fun summer and keep dancing, we look forward to seeing you in a square over the summer!

Each mystery caravan has been fun, and each year we seem to wander a bit further from home. This year SAMENA SQUARES ended up in Pendleton, OR, at the Boots in the Blue Mountains dance festival. Callers for the event were Deborah Carroll-Jones and Jon Jones. Despite driving through snow and rain, all made it there safely and back. People had such a great time that some are considering returning next year just for the fun of it! Our Garden Party dance was magical. The decorators for the evening created a whimsical garden environment with trellises, flowers, birdfeeders, and wind chime mobiles. Handcrafted door prizes of bird feeders were provided and a flower garden quilt was raffled off. It was obvious that Mike Muhm, the

winner, was pleased to have won the beautiful blanket. Caller Susan Morris sang patter to records named "Butterflies" and "Buckets of Worms". Cuer Karen Neverdowski included the round dance "Garden Party." We even did an old fashioned party game that brought smiles and laughter. That same weekend we had a potluck on Sunday afternoon so we could watch the video of Ben McCracken's memorial service. Ben had passed away in January and many of us missed the service because we were in Hawaii. What a feeling of community as we joined together for a meal with his wife, Annie, and to view the service. We are also quite proud of our author, Helen Szablya. Helen has written a book called "My Only Choice: Hungary 1942-1956" and of course many of us have purchased autographed copies and are busily reading them. Upcoming dances include our June 14th Let's Hear It Red/White/Blue dance with Roger and Jill Spiese. We will also be having a Beach Party on Friday, June 28th with Jim Hattrick. To keep up-to-date and view our photographs, please visit our website at www.samenasquares.org. Jim Hunt does an excellent job of keeping our site current.

The healing power of music was recognized in ancient Greece. While prepping yourselves to dress for a dance, do you ever say, I am too tired to do this? But when you arrive at the dance hall and the music draws you in and then the dancers, with smiles on their faces, brings us alive again. Our friends may have aching joints, sore feet, arthritic hands to some degree and yet, the atmosphere in a square dance says aren’t you glad you came? Forgot you hurt? HAPPY HOPPERS had a wonderful time dancing with you all this year for you bring the fun with you and share it. For our last dance this season, we share strawberry shortcake at our evening mainstream dance on June 1st with Scott and Erin Byars. They will treat us to a plus dance in the afternoon from 3-5 pm. Life measures each day carefully so come out and make the most of it on the dance floor with friends. Here’s to another exciting year for come this fall the Hoppers begin their new season with the multi-talented Randy Preskitt who not only calls but cues and brings along an attractive partner to help us realize how good we could look someday on the dance floor. We are proud to share the many talents of our own Jeremy Deal who not only is a scholarly guy, but he sings with the Seattle Children’s Choir who recently performed at Carnegie Hall. There are many sides of square dancers and it is fun to get to know them. Let’s enjoy our summer for there are so many grand events to try out for square and round dancers. Just remember, “Keep your words soft and sweet in case you have to eat them.”

FidAlGO FOGCUTTERS Mystery Caravan on April 13th had 48 on the bus. We enjoyed dinner at the Spaghetti Factory and then traveled to the Olympia Do-Si-Dos for a fun evening of dancing with Jim Hattrick and Joyce Sebree. Our newly elected Board for next year are: President, Gailyn and Ron Ploeg; Vice President, Don and Snookie Carlson; Secretary, Barb and Doug McDugle; Treasurer, Roger Kessler; Council Delegates are Snookie Carlson and Ron Ploeg. As the Fogcutters dance season comes to a close we are looking forward to getting together for the Skagit Valley Hoedown on the weekend of July 26-27th, at the Skagit Valley Grange. We have John Corrigan and Steve Noseck calling and Randy and Marie Preskitt cueing. R.V. dry camping is available. The WOOdiNVillE SQUARE CROWS welcomed national caller Joe Saltel on April 30th and we had a great dance. We thoroughly enjoyed Joe and know that those attending the Apple Blossom Festival did as well! We celebrated our 39th anniversary with Jim Hattrick last month and Craig Abercrombie did his usual superb job of calling and cueing to put the exclamation point on the whole celebration at our second dance. In June we have only one club dance, again with Jim Hattrick calling and cueing, on the 7th. Our casual dress summer dances start with this one – let’s hope it feels like summer by then! We’ll see all of you at the State Festival in the Tri-Cities - we don’t have a dance scheduled on June 21st because we’ll still be recovering!

WHidBEY WHiRlERS had their last dance in May and are now in the process of closing down our club. Our membership has been declining for several years for various reasons, meaning that a very few members have been responsible for holding offices and being in charge of the many duties required to keep the club active. While they have done a great job, we all realize it’s time to let go! We extend our deepest gratitude to Bob and Linda Berka. Most of you know

their busy schedule, but they have been the glue that has kept our club together, taking on extra duties when necessary. We would like to thank all of you for your support over the years, making the long drive to attend our dances. There have been so many lasting friendships formed on the dance floor, and those will continue, as our group is not giving up dancing! We’ll look forward to seeing you at your activities scheduled throughout the year.

SKY VAllEY WHiRlWiNdS went on a mystery caravan on April 13th stopping at Old Country Buffet in Bellevue and no one went hungry, there was plenty to eat for everyone, and some a little too much, then onto the Bonnie Lads and Lassies in Tacoma. They were surprised when the bus with 36 square dancers showed up to their Hobo dance called by Steve Haslett. Steve welcomed us when we arrived. One of our other members was able to join us after he got off work, the club members being surprised to see him. How did you get here it was a mystery caravan? Sky Valley Whirlwinds celebrated their 34th Anniversary with a 50's dance called by Scott Coon and cueing by John Neverdowski on May 11th. Fun was had by all who attended. We are looking forward to dancing at the State and other Festivals June through August. We are looking forward to our club picnic and club campout this summer with good food and fellowship with club members. Then we start our season with our lessons starting on September 19th, 2013 at 7:30 at the Triway Grange where we dance with Spyder Webb calling. FREEWHEElERS had a great time dancing in May. On the 5th was the “Cinco de Mayo Dance” with Mike Olsen calling and Shirley Cook cueing. May 19th was our “May Flowers” dance with Roger Spiese and Debbie Taylor. The Workshops will continue through the summer at the Lake City Community Center. We visited the Fern Bluff Squares on May 11th. Caravanning to other clubs in the area is a great way to increase attendance at your home dances. Our last caravan out for this season will be on June 1st to the Stanwood Sashayers. Remember the Freewheelers dance throughout the summer months when many clubs aren’t active. Please dress comfortably for the summer dances (casual, short sleeves for the men). As CHECKERBOARdS complete another year, we will be graduating our small class on June 2nd with a special ceremony that welcomes them into our club. Ray Gallagher has done a wonderful job of bringing our new dancers through all of the moves this spring, with a winning way that made it fun for everyone. On June 8th we will have our “Pie and Ice Cream Social,” where our new dancers will be invited to join us in their first mainstream dance. This dance with Greg Weber calling and Debbie Taylor Cueing will bring our regular season to a close until next September 14th, when we begin our new season with an assortment of guest callers. We will be having 2 summer dances this year, one on July 27th with Greg Weber calling his last dance as our regular caller. We are sorry to lose him, he is so talented. On August 10th we will have our second summer dance with Ray Gallagher calling for us. Both dances will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

FERN BlUFF SQUARES has had a busy few months and we’re looking forward to a great summer of dancing. In April we had our Topsy Turvy dance. This was a new theme for us and we were unsure how everyone would interpret it and we were pleasantly surprised. We had dancers with their clothes on backwards and we had guys dress up in gals square dance clothes (including our caller Ray Gallagher) it was a fantastic evening! We also had our first mystery caravan and we’re thankful to club member Lisa Hagen-Lyle for organizing a really fun day. We started out with a coffee stop where Lisa gave us each a homemade shortbread cookie. Then off to an early dinner at an Irish pub where we all had a fabulous meal. We then played mini-golf…we were all supposed to get a theme building up to the club that we were visiting – it was the Bonnie Lads and Lassies in Tacoma, WA. They were gracious hosts and we got to dance to Steve Haslett before he retires from calling this year. Thanks to the Jetsteppers for choosing us as their final destination this year for their murder mystery themed caravan. They brought a large group and it was a great time dancing with them. Make sure that you’re making plans to dance this summer and we look forward to seeing you in a square at any one of the many fantastic weekends planned from State Festival to Circle 8 Ranch!

BUdS & BlOSSOMS members witnessed the marriage of their club president, Don Jackson, to Nora Cooper on Sunday afternoon, April 21st, at East Wenatchee Grange Hall. The wedding ceremony was followed by a square dance with caller Mike Sikorsky. The hall was packed to capacity for both events, in addition to friends and family of the bride and groom; invited guests included members of all the clubs in the area. This was truly a memorable event and here’s wishing Don and Nora much happiness together. The summer schedule for Buds & Blossoms is to be announced, so watch for it. Meanwhile, our members help with Wednesday afternoon square dancing at the Wenatchee Senior Center, each week from 2 to 4 PM.

The APPlElANd PROMENAdERS and the PLUS BUNCH members are ready to shed the fleece and boots and get out the sunscreen and flip-flops. Summer is a great time for traveling and dancing in different locales and with different callers, clubs, and cuers. Circle 8 is a wonderful destination for dancing and other summer pursuits as well. Whether you travel far or stay closer to home, have a nice summer, play safely, and we hope to see you in a square sometime soon. We've had a fun and busy spring attending a black light dance, some club anniversaries, and even a wedding, complete with square dance! The Apple Blossom dance in early May finished our regular dance season. A big thank you to the many that traveled to Cashmere and helped make it a good time. Mark your calendars for next year's dance featuring international caller Hunter Keller out of Montana, especially if you are looking for some fun and energy in a Plus dance. We'd love to have you join us.

CASCAdE TWiRlERS hosted the NORTH CENTRAL COUNCIL dance with John Corrigan. He did a great job of calling, as always, we had a fun time with all clubs in council being represented. We also had Jess Thomas calling for us; even though it was a small crowd we had lots of fun. We are having him back in the fall, so if you missed him this time come out and enjoy his calling then. We attended the Wheatland Whirlers anniversary dance. It is always nice to be able to help a club celebrate getting older as it proves square dancing is still alive. We are looking forward to attending the State Festival, going to Circle 8 and looking for dances to attend around the state. Have a great summer dancing.

WHEATlANd WHiRlERS had a great anniversary dance. John & Wendy Syrstad called and cued a wonderful dance and everybody had a good time. June 8th we have Adam Chrisman calling and Noelle Miller cueing. At this time that is our last dance of the season, but if things change will send out email to keep dancers informed.

Three of our men, Bob Yearout, Don Countryman and Jim Compton, built a stage for the callers and cuers. They did a very nice job and it was first used at our anniversary dance. Several of us will be attending State Festival and will be going to Circle 8 Ranch. We are looking forward to seeing you in a square this summer.

PAWS & TAWS want to congratulate Fred and Flossie Wise. They were given the Little Richie's award at the Peninsula Council’s Spring Festival on April 20th. Dan and Reva Dubiak the 2012 winners presented them as the winners for 2013-2014. April 19th was our “Pajama dance" and also a student level dance, which was attended by new dancers. We had over 5 squares. They got into the spirit when lots dressed in PJ's. The students are doing very well and will graduate in June. We have several more student level dances. May 3rd was our 57th Birthday Dance and as always was a lot of fun along with cake and ice cream and lots of prizes. The Round Dance class is going well. Jill cued lesson level dances at the April 19th dance and the students did great. One of my favorites will be May 17th - the Roaring 20's dance. Costumes are always great attractions that night.

Leota Lewis, [email protected]

ROUNd SQUARES had another successful silent auction at our 59th birthday dance on March 23rd. Many thanks go to Peggy Fix and all that donated items and to those who bid on them. Our caravan chairman is busy working on some upcoming visitations now that the weather is getting to look like spring. We'll see you somewhere on the dance floor soon. Saturday night mainstream lessons before the dances 6:00 - 7:30 pm are moving right along. The new students should be graduating in June so they can be dancing this summer. The KSDC grounds are getting groomed and mowed for the upcoming campouts. Many thanks to Russ Richardson and crew who use the riding mower to keep the grass all trimmed. Hope everyone has a great summer dancing at the festival, fair, wherever you may go. Adios until September!

The STRAiT WHEElERS had a fantastic time at our annual Canadian visitation. Seventeen of our members made the trip to Victoria, B.C. for a great weekend of dancing, touring and visiting with friends. This event has been enjoyed for over fifty years and hopefully continues for many more. May and June, except for the State Festival, are fairly quiet for us but, July will be busy. We are very busy with the preparations of our 13th annual Lavender Dance Weekend. Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing and you know he always makes a dance so special so please plan to join us. July is a beautiful time of the year to visit our fabulous peninsula with all of the gorgeous scenery and lavender fields in bloom. For more information go to http://gardinerwa.org/noc or e-mail Diane at [email protected] We will also have a booth at the Lavender Festival on the third weekend of July. The club will be advertising square dancing, selling raffle tickets for the Lavender Dance, handing out pamphlets listing lesson opportunities on the Peninsula and performing a demonstration with Janolyn Keller calling. Please come and say hi if you plan to attend the great Sequim Lavender Festival. We send our prayers and thoughts to the people of Boston. May God be with you in your time of great stress.

Hello RAiNiER COUNCil! It has been a busy and productive dance season. We have made some real organizational progress this year. I say progress because there is still much for your newly elected slate of officers to do. Those officers are as follows;

President: Mike BowenVice President: Lynn RedRecording Secretary: Lu SimmonsTreasurer: Steve MacKayNominating to State: Tom Tomlinson

We are officers, but we cannot do it all alone. I want to take this opportunity to thank our fantastic delegates, web master, committee persons, and committee chairs. We are fortunate to have so many eager people working for this organization. I also want to give a shout out to Frank Fohn “God of the Coffee”! Ok, that was weird, but I like coffee and Frank always makes sure it is brewed and that everyone that wants some gets some. Lastly, I want to recognize the best part of our council, all of you. Council is of the club members, by the club members, and for the club members. No matter how small or insignificant you think your contributions are, those contributions are helpful and vital. Remember, YOU are IMPORTANT. You ARE Rainier Council.

Mike Bowen, [email protected]

Well, hello again from the BONNEY lAdS 'N' lASSiES. You hear me use the term "Square Dance Family" from time to time. To me, the definition of "Square Dance Family" is all of you: our guests, our members, and all of those that promote Square Dancing as a great family activity. We want to thank you all for your support to our club, and all you do for Square Dancing. We would like to invite everyone to our upcoming dances, starting with our Graduation/Installation of Officers Dance on June 8th. We will not have any pre-rounds on that night; instead, we will have our graduation ceremonies starting at 7:30. June 22nd is our Beach Party Dance. On July 13th we will be having our Salad Dance and on August 10th we have our Ice Cream Dance. Remember, all of our summer dances are come as you are. Well, from The Bonney Lads 'N' Lassies, we hope all of you have a great summer; and so until next time, to all of our friends, keep dancing, but most of all keep smiling.

Over 30 dancers came out to EVERGREEN ROUNdS on April 17th to honor Don and Pat Wiggins who recently retired from cueing. It was fun to see

Beginning (Phase 1-2) round dance classes are held 6:30-7:45 PM, and the dances are 7:45-10:00 PM, every Wednesday at Edgewood Grange. SOU’WESTER COUNCil wants to wish everyone a relaxing and restful summer with lots of opportunities to dance. Some clubs are changing their schedules for the summer months and dancing during the week. Read the articles carefully for day and/or time changes. With the longer daylight hours longer travels can be planned, maybe even turning a dance into a camping trip or mini vacation. Whatever you do, enjoy and get rested up for the fall when we begin lessons again and try to encourage new people to enjoy our recreation.

HARBOR HAYlOFTERS know that April showers bring May flowers; lets hope that June brings us warm summer days. All of our snowbirds are back and hopefully brought the sun back with them. In April our club caravanned to the Prairie Steppers and some of our members went up to the Sikorsky, Preedy Dance. At the end of April many of our dancers went to the Salty Sashayers for their Anniversary Dance, where they enjoyed the wonderful clam chowder and pies. Others in our club traveled over the mountains and danced at the Spring Sashay in Moxee. In May we held our 50's dance with lots of poodle skirts and leather jackets. Our caller, Randy Carlson, and wife Chris, did a great job calling. At the end of May, many of our club attended the Memorial Day dance and campout in Gorst. We also had our Appreciation Banquet and Student Graduation. We honored our caller and welcomed all of our students into our club. June 1st is our big Strawberry Dance and our last dance of the season. With all the strawberries a person can eat and great music and dancing, we always have a big crowd and look forward to it every year. We are dark in July and August. We will dance again on Saturday, September 21st at our Blackberry Dance. We dance at the Aberdeen Eagles, 204 W. Market Street. This is wishing everyone a wonderful summer and hope to see some of you in a square.

Hello all you happy dancers, by the time you read this, spring will have sprung and the State Festival will be just around the corner. SOUTH SOUNd SiNGlES is back to having guest callers for three months. We've had Jeff Graeff, Stephen Cole, Jess Thomas, Andy Garboden and we will have Tom Tomlinson. Our second dance in June is cancelled so all can go to the State Festival. After that Kenny Freeman will be back. On April 20th we celebrated being "Tax Free" for a little while. A friend of one of our members made cute little "tax" shelters for our table decorations. In May we honored our Armed Forces. In July we are looking forward to our annual 4th of July barbeque. Hope you all had a good spring and as usual, if you are in the Tacoma area, we would love to have you come dance with us.

April sneaked past and the SPiNNER’S Cinco de Mayo Mexican Potluck Dance was May 3rd. Our dancers stay busy searching for the Kings, Queens and Jacks that didn’t show for our Poker Run dance; our hall filled that night and the dancing was ‘wild’ anyway. Numerous teddy bears came along. Thanks for inviting them! Thanks to the Bonnie Lads ‘n’ Lassies for a terrific caravan.

dancing. Nothing like a 51st anniversary to create some excitement! Now is the time to start your summer dancing! We start on Saturday June 1st and we would love to have you dancing with us. We’ll start our June dance with early-rounds by Ron Woolcock at 7:30 pm and mainstream from 8 to 10:30 pm by Don Wood. Rumor has it that the dance theme might have something to do with baseball! Baseball gear or casual attire is in order. And yes, the 61st Annual Washington State Square Dance Festival will be held on June 14th and 15th in Kennewick, WA, should be lots of good dancing there. NO dance for the Lacey Daisys in July because of the holiday but we wish you all a safe and happy 4th! We will have our regular dance on Saturday August 3rd so put us on your dance schedule for August. Don Wood will be calling and Ron Woolcock will be cueing. The early-rounds begin at 7:30 pm followed by mainstream from 8 pm to 10:30 pm. Come dance with us at Lac-A-Do hall for an enjoyable evening of dancing. Have a happy and fun summer.

ROUNd A-BOUTS are ready for another great summer of dancing. They hope to see you at their 1st Tuesday and 3rd Friday dances this summer. Except, Tuesday July 2nd, which has been cancelled because their cuers are already committed, also Olympia Area Square Dance, Inc. will be doing work on the hall in July. Please, don’t forget to attend their “famous” annual Burgers and Brats dance on the 4th Tuesday, August 27th. This is their Special Thank-you dance, for everyone’s support throughout the year. It was started and is hosted by Ron and Georgine Woolcock. The new club officers are, Darrel Mollenhour, President, Allan McCune, Vice President, Gary & Linda Gerdes, Treasurer, and Ollie & Al Dunlap, Secretary. Thanks to the past officers and a special thanks to these officers for stepping up to the task this year. The Club’s Round Dances are from 7:30 to 9:30 PM and they are dancing at a Phase II and Phase III level. Randy Wulf and Ron Woolcock will be sharing the Cueing duties at their summer dances. Gary Gerdes, Wagon Master at Circle 8 this summer, hopes he will see many of you at leadership in July and also at any of their special summer dance programs. Round A-Bouts continue to be active and are having a great time dancing circles “around” everyone here at Lac-A-Do. Thank you again, for all your support.

As this issue of Footnotes goes to press, the SAlTY SASHAYERS are making preparations for our annual “Old Salts Anniversary Dance.” We are

expecting a good turnout and a real fun dance with Gunter Monroe calling and Ron Woolcock cueing. As you read this article, the dance will have already happened. So we’ll have to let you know all about how the dance went in the September issue. In the meantime, we wish you all a good summer and happy dancing.

R SQUARE d is 60 years old! We celebrated this at our dance on April 12th and had up to 8 squares dancing throughout the evening. There were a number of past Presidents in attendance and a group picture was taken at the end of the dance. Our club visited Happy Hoppers and Hoedowners in April and a number of our members also attended Ruff & Ruffles’ dance on April 13th. The Two-Step lessons that were taught by Lonnie and Linda Sycks and sponsored by our club concluded with a dance party on April 14th. This was a fun evening of music and dancing! During the summer months, our dance schedule will change to the second and fourth Wednesdays. June 12th is our Flag Day Dance and June 26th is Summer Daze with Guest Caller K.C. Curtis. All of our summer dances are casual and will start with plus at 7:00 and Mainstream with Rounds from 7:30 – 9:30. Many of our members are looking forward to attending the Sou’Wester Council Dance on June 29th at the Catlin Grange in Kelso. Our Back to School Dance is on August 28th and our members will bring school supplies that will be donated to a local school. We will resume our normal dance schedule (second Friday and fourth Saturday) in September. We have no lessons during the summer and will start up again on Wednesday, October 16th. Please visit our web site www.r-square-d.info for our full schedule and other club information.

RUFF & RUFFlES once again had to move our dance to another hall, this time to the Kelso Senior Center for the April 20th dance. It was suppose to be a surprise “Appreciation Dance” honoring our club round dance cuer Susan Healea but word sort of slipped out. She was given a dance card to be filled out during the evening. Almost seven squares attended the dance including “Mom”. Club caller Jim Raupp did double duty and was also the guest cuer for the evening. Cuers Sharon Parker from California and Ron Woolcock of Olympia were in attendance and helped cue several rounds. Guests included R Square D, Cougar Squares, Stardust Dancers and Lacey Daisys. Fred & Peggy Rolf were on refreshment duty serving cookies, ice cream and cheese/crackers/veggies assortment. We visited R Square D on the 12th to help them celebrate their 60th Anniversary. We also welcomed President Neil and Eileen Rosevear back from their two-month trip south. The club meeting on the 16th was hosted by sisters Lavon Hirsch/ Moni Payder in their home. Trying to get officers for next year was the main topic of business (We have all been there, done that). Also we discussed the problem of having to move our dance every October and April to another location as the Grange is used for their activities at that time. Members are looking forward to our annual club campout in May at Ocean Park. We will not be dancing in June or July due to Festivals in Washington and Oregon that fall on our dance night. Hope to see you at both of these events. We will be dancing the 3rd Saturday in August from 8 to 10:30 at the Catlin Grange in Kelso. Casual attire. We invite you to come join us. Otherwise, have a great relaxing summer…

THE PRAiRiE STEPPERS 32nd Annual Chicken Dance held at Lac-A-Do was a great success. The weather was great and so was the dancing. Thanks to Don Wood and Craig Abercrombie for harmonious calling and Lonnie Sycks for tuneful cueing. We had many compliments on our chicken dinner. Our own Prairie Stepper Chicken entertained us with his antics. He was surprised to meet a lovely Flamingo on the dance floor. She had a basket full of chicks and implied that the Prairie Chicken was to blame. Eight new Mainstream Dancers graduated at our April dance and all of them joined the club. Congratulations and welcome to Mark Burton, Larry Ford, Bill and Carole Kaiser, Jeremiah Palumbo, Jody Pogue, and Carl and Shauna Smith. We plan to keep them dancing with us over the summer. For starters, we invited them to travel with us to the Salty Sashayers’ Old Salt’s Dance on April 27th for clam chowder, pie, and dancing. Prairie Steppers plan to enjoy the OASDI 50th Annual Memorial Day Weekend at Lac-A-Do, the Sou’Wester Council dance on June 29th at the Catlin Grange in Kelso, and travels to other Sou’Wester clubs over the summer. We hope to join you in a square this late spring and summer.

COUGAR SQUARES had two “special dances in a row. In May we graduated 24 square dance students and 23 round dance students. In June we celebrated out 52nd anniversary. Jim Raupp, our caller/cuer/teacher and Susan Healea, our “special cuer/teacher worked together on both of these dances. They are both big celebrations and we hope well attended. Looking toward summer, we dance on the third Thursday of July, the 18th. This is our “Ice Cream Feed”. We begin dancing at 7:00 pm and have an ice cream treat following the dance at about 9:00 to 9:30. Then we dance again on the first Thursday in August, the 1st. This is our Hamburger Feed. Jim and Paula Raupp supply the burgers and buns. Cougars bring the rest of the picnic meal. We eat at 6:3 pm and dance after the meal. Both of these dances are casual dress and are held at St. Francis Parish Hall just off the Jackson Highway at the blinking yellow light. Put one or both of these on your schedule. Jim Raupp will be calling and cueing both dances. Cougars will be busy during the summer with parades and demonstrations. It all begins with our Anniversary Dance June 1st followed by the June 13th Trail End Dance in Kennewick and the State Festival on June 14th &15th. In July we are dancing in the Toledo Cheese Day parade and have our Ice Cream Feed. In August we have our Hamburger Feed and dance in the Blueberry Festival Parade and at the Southwest Washington Fair. It will be a summer filled with dancing opportunities! Cougars hope to see many of you at one of the events mentioned above, but if not, we wish you a wonderful summer with lots of warm sunny weather and lots of dancing.

The COEURlY Q’S “Night at the Movies” Dance at the Harding Family Center was filled with eleven plus squares. Thanks to Adam Christman and Justine Brown and all who made it possible, including John Wayne, Elvis and all the other movie stars. It was fun recalling past memories of oldies but goodies. Two very special people were in attendance: Emil Johnson, a 100-year-old-Coeurly Q member, who waltzed across the floor with some ladies from our club and Adam’s mom, who cued a couple rounds for us; we thank her for inspiring her son to become such a good caller. Please keep Ed and Eleanor Schiffner in your prayers for Ed's speedy recovery from surgery. Thank you, Adam, for taking Ed’s place and finishing our lessons. Also thanks to area callers who have and/or are helping out with our demo dances. Our “April Showers Bring May Flowers” Dance May 4th featured Marvin Speck and Theresa Nichols. Everyone have a safe and happy summer!

July to Del Erickson 22nd, and George Harrison 28th and in August to Eunice Erickson 1st. Happy June Anniversary to Burt & Margaret Erickson 10th; in July to Eldon & Sue Wagner 4th, Ed & Sharon Perrigo 18th, and Jim & Carol Shopbell 22nd; and in August to Jack & Sheila O’Brien 8th, Mark & Karla Talbot 31st, and Arlie & Joy Ulmer 31st. We visited the Diamond Squares and celebrated their 52nd Anniversary with them. We had a great time dancing to Bob & Claudia Amsbury. Amber Gimlen, who is attending the prospective Caller Seminar presented by Doug Davis, called a tip for us and did a great job. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of this young lady. June 2nd is our annual picnic & meeting. We do not host a dance in June as we will first support the Washington State Festival then we will be going on our annual week-long RV travel. July 19th is “Rounds with Carol” with Phase II thru VI Rounds. August 1st to 5th is our club campout, golf, breakfast, meeting & potluck. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL IN KENNEWICK! Have a GREAT summer of dancing,

diAMONd SQUARES celebrated their 38th Annual Spring Fling Spaghetti Feed and Dance with a "Toga Party." Our callers Bob Amsbury and Don Cochrane were dressed as gladiators. Other dancers came as pirates, mermaids and scarecrows; we had a tin man and a variety of "togas." Thanks to all who helped with the preparation, food service and the costume ideas. The next evening we celebrated our 52nd Anniversary Dance and enjoyed homemade cakes courtesy of the Sticklers. On April 20th some club members traveled with Dave and Karen in their motorhome to the Hoodoo Valley Hoedowners and danced in the Jewel Lake Barn. The trip there and back was as much fun as the dance! Other club activities include a huge thank you to our outgoing and incoming club officers and our picnic and pool party at Tom and Evie McCarthy's backyard, July 27th at 1:00 pm. Square dance demos are planned for July 4th at the Riverfront Park in the Lilac Bowl; July 20th at Garland Days; July 27th at the Spokane Valley Mall; 2-4 pm, August 17th at the Northtown Mall; 2-4 pm and during the Spokane County Fair in September. You can check out the Spokane Area Council web site www.squaredancespokane.org for more information. Diamond Square members will be serving drinks at the WDC Salmon BBQ on Sunday, August 25th. Hope we see you sometime this summer.

The JACKS & JENNYS Anniversary Dance in April was visited by a Mystery Caravan from the Dudes & Dolls of Lynnwood. It seems they take a Mystery Caravan every couple years, put all the club names in a hat and draw so we were

the luck of the draw. Their caller is Scott (and Darcy) Coon. Scott does a good imitation of Elvis which made it a really fun dance. Most of the door prizes went back to Lynnwood with the Dudes & Dolls as did half of the 50/50 pots. A good time was had by all. We will not dance in June since it is festival time and July is our club campout; but we will resume dancing on August 17th with a summer theme.

The KRAZY 8's are saddened by the loss of our friend and fellow dancer Bill Leisi. Please keep Nina and the family in your thoughts and prayers. The Krazy 8's have enjoyed traveling to other dances this year. Our last travel dance to the Valley Crosstrailers' 55th anniversary dance was well attended and we recaptured our banner. We will be dancing the first Friday dance in June and August at the Western Dance Center. Our dance starts at 7:00 PM with Plus and rounds and Mainstream and rounds from 8:00 to 10:00. Our August dance will be a knobby knees dance so dress casually and plan to have fun. Remember to bring lots of club members and you could win a certificate for a free dance for your club.

The MOdEl “T” SQUARE dANCE ClUB members are looking forward to summer and all of the activities that come with it. Some of us will be at State Festival stomping on the grapes in the Tri-Cities and seeing old friends we only see once a year or so. Then there is Leadership Seminar where we get a lot of new ideas for our club and how we can attract new dancers to our favorite activity. August will find us at our campout where the card players have marathon events and eating is actually a sport. Have a sunshiny summer!

Along with enjoying the warmer weather, the STAR SHOOTERS are busy with summer plans. Adam Christman will be calling Mainstream squares for us on first and third Wednesdays and Dan Preedy will be calling Plus on the second Wednesday and Mainstream on the fourth Wednesday. We're also hosting a dance July 3rd with callers Jim Hattrick and Adam Christman. July 20th will find club members dancing at the Garland Days Street Fair. We had such a great time sharing our love of square dancing with others last summer and we are looking forward to doing it again. Another demo dance is planned for July 30th at the Spokane Valley Mall. We have a bowling trip planned as well as our picnic, and our 4th Saturday dances too. There are many things to do and we look forward to seeing everyone. Have a safe summer.

The last scheduled dance of the season for the TWiN CiTY TWiRlERS is a BBQ picnic and dance on June 1st from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The next dance season won’t begin again until September, so we’ll have plenty of time to make it to the many square dance festivals taking place around the State of Washington and Idaho in the summer months. You all have a safe and fun time; hopefully, we’ll meet you in a square.

WAG AROUNdS are looking forward to the Butterfly Ball, our annual dance weekend June 14th-16th at the Western Dance Center. Randy and Marie Preskitt are our featured clinicians and cuer and there are still a few openings for the weekend. If you're interested and would like more information, email Deb at <[email protected]>. Our last easy level round dance for this season is June 2nd at the Western Dance Center with Nina Leisi cueing a dancer-chosen program from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and then it's the Butterfly Ball. Walk-ins are welcome. We are extending a heartfelt thank you to our club cuers, Jack DeChenne and Nina Leisi for continuing to be on stage cueing up round dances for us to enjoy even though they each had to deal with the loss of their life-long partners this past season. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you always. Enjoy your favorite summer activities and dancing too! See you next season.

Wild ROSE RAMBlERS had a blast with the Twin City Twirlers the first Saturday of April. Pam Craig put together fun activities to make the drive seem short to Clarkston and back from Lewiston. Several Diamond Squares members joined us; so nearly four squares joined TCT. Thanks to all who helped the Ramblers celebrate their 43rd Anniversary in May. By the time Footnotes is delivered, our club’s annual yard sale will have come and gone – that’s always a fun event. June is our tee-shirt and shorts/jeans dance entitled “Hot Dogs and Hot Rods.” Come out to our casual dance; it’s always nice to not have to prepare dinner prior to the dance. Summer events include our annual campout and picnic the weekend of July 27. The clubs who dance at North Spokane Dance center will be baking lots of cookies to serve at the Sprague Rest Area this summer. Stop by and visit if you’re through the area on your way back from State Festival in Kennewick or July 4th,

August 31st and Labor Day weekend. Hope you can join the fun at Seminar the weekend of July 13 and Salmon BBQ the weekend of August 24.

Letters to the Editor are welcomed and encouraged. They may be sent by email or snail mail. Feel free to comment on what you see or read in FOOTNOTES or our square dance activity at large. Names witheld upon request although unsigned letters will be sumarily assigned to file 13.

In June of 2002, Dave and I came to Goldendale, starting our new life together. (We had been true friends since 1989.) We went to Columbia River Bank (because we liked the sound of the name) to open a checking account. And there was Shirley! “Do you square dance?”, she asked. We smiled and said “no”. She said, “Lessons start in September”. We said, “That’s nice”. What a friendly lady in a new town where we didn’t know a single person! Over the summer, Shirley gently reminded us that “lessons start in September”. We smiled and said, “That’s nice”. Then Ordell called (a total stranger to us) and said, “I will come and pick you up for square dance lessons tomorrow”. What? Certainly we liked your wife at the bank, but we never actually promised to come to lessons! What can you say to a man who calls and says he’ll pick you up and drive you to The Dalles ?? Dave and I looked at each other and said

Ed note: Snail mail still works! Thanks Betty & Gale. We’re printing your note for all of our editors to see how much you appreciate them.

Ed note: The letter that appears to the right was not specifically sent to FOOTNOTES as a “Letter to the Editor”. However Jean Raymond thought it was of a stature that everyone in the Federation should have an opportunity to see. Your editors agree and therefore we share it with you.

OK, we’ll go one time to be polite. Ordell picked us up the next evening - and everything changed! Square dancing was nothing like we expected! We had never before experienced the exhilaration of physical exercise done to music (neither one of us had ever danced), or the challenge of learning to respond to a “call” without thinking. We also learned that to be a square dancer, you have to be able to laugh at yourself! We found friends! Oh my! Square dancing is so many wonderful things. On November 7th, Dave and I got married, and you gave us a “wedding reception” that we will NEVER forget!!! (and wouldn’t have had without you!) What a blessing you have been to us!! The “disbanding” of Jeans and Calico feels profoundly sad for us. While our minds understand the necessity, our hearts cry “No”!! We are so looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday. You have added immeasurably to our lives and we will always be grateful.

We made plans for the Hazel Dell Parade of Bands in May as well as the Portland Rose Festival Starlight Parade in June. These should be fun events for us. During the summer, we will be dancing at the Clark County Fair, as well as enjoying quality time with our club members at our annual club picnic in August at Lewisville Park in Battle Ground. Happy dancing and we hope to see you at one of the many festivals this summer.

Daffodil Parade dancers actually “had fun anyway” on the Rainier Council Float, though the weather turned cold, rainy and wet. Spinners graduate five students this year—already great dancers—thanks to patient teaching by our Caller, Greg Weber. Those workshops helped tremendously! Our June 7th dance will be a casual affair as we gear down the dancing to make room for summer. Come in comfortable clothes. Sue will cue beginning at 7:30. Square up at 8:00 o’clock in Buckley Hall, Greg calling. See you all there! Picnic and Campout July 19th-21st. For details contact Jerry Wilcox, 425-350-1204. The 2013 National Square Dance Convention will be held this year in Oklahoma City on June 26th-29th. The Cox Convention Center will be the site for this annual event. The National Convention is the world's largest party where people can square dance all day long and nearly all night long. This will be an opportunity to square dancers from around the world who love the hobby of square dancing, to dance to their heart's content!

The National Convention is an once-in-a-lifetime experience for many dancers. The upcoming conventions provides a venue for square dancers from Oklahoma and surrounding states to come together to dance and to make new friends with others who enjoy this wonderful hobby.

The economic impact of thousands of dancers traveling to Oklahoma City and attending the 4-day convention is significant. Hotels and restaurants in downtown Oklahoma City will be busy during the convention. We Oklahomans are fortunate to be centrally located in the US at the intersection of two major interstate highways. Our warm hospitality, for which we are well known, will be on display to the many square dancers who will soon arrive in our great state.

There are still rooms available on South Meridian Ave. You will need to purchase a bus pass for each rider. If you prefer to drive we are offering parking passes for three parking garages in downtown Oklahoma City. The 4 day pass is $16.00 and is good Wednesday June 26th through Saturday June 29th.

The pass may be used in the Convention Center Parking Garage, Sheraton Hotel Parking Garage and the Santa Fe Parking Garage. Entry and exit is accomplished by inserting the pass into the slot at the gate of these garages (just like a hotel key).

The purchased Parking Pass will be placed in your 62nd NSDC registration packet, to be picked up at the convention registration counters.

All passes must be purchased in advance and the deadline for Purchases will be June 10, 2013.

NO REFUNdS on cancellations received after June 10, 2013Make all checks out to 62nd NSdC and send to:Gene & Barbara Morton2320 16th StreetVernon, TX 76384

Healthy Notesby Janolyn Keller

Ed note: Janolyn Keller is the caller and cuer for the Strait Wheelers in Port Angeles. She submitted this article to FOOTNOTES with the following message: “I hope that it helps a lot of people. Here is one that was my favorite for last month’s newsletters.”

Pain. What is your body telling you? How many of us have chronic pain? Frequent unexplained headaches, arthritis, joint and muscle pain not caused by injuries, back pain, and stiffness that doesn’t allow freedom of movement. This all causes us not to enjoy life as much as we would like and limits our activities. What if a couple of simple changes could reverse that? What if you could change one, two, or three things and get your freedom back? Would it be worth trying? Well here are 3 things that I have found are the easiest to do and have the biggest impact on chronic pain.

1. Water. Simple as that sounds, dehydration is the biggest contributor to chronic pain. Americans drink everything except water and that causes more problems than just pain. Those could be a subject for another time. But for now, start drinking water. Any is better than none, but you are also drinking toxic chemicals by drinking tap water. So I recommend filtered, reverse osmosis, and distilled, in that order. Add a pinch of good quality sea salt to help you absorb it. Start slowly and build up so your kidneys have a chance to adjust. Then watch miracles happen.

2. The next biggest cause of pain is unknown immune response to certain foods. Wheat is the most common culprit. I will be standing up calling a class and turn to bend and adjust something and find that I cannot move. Everything hurts! Then I remember that bagel that I ate for breakfast because I did not take time to make something better……. (insert favorite cuss word here!) Once I got wheat out of my system on a regular basis, I recognize why my body says ouch! According to my research the most common immune response activators are; gluten…especially in wheat, soy in all forms, eggs, dairy, corn (and now we have the GMO to be aware of ), peanuts, and of course….sugar. Eliminating these from your diet and then adding them back one at a time will help you sort out which ones are causing you pain.

3. I can be sitting at my desk and go to get up and realize that I hurt all over. I glance at the clock and see that I have been sitting in the same position for 3 hours. No wonder I hurt. And we all do that in our own ways. We hurt so we slow down and don’t move so much which causes our muscles to stiffen so we slow down even more. What I have found is that if I make a habit of moving every hour, especially if I am sitting at my desk, I don’t hurt. So find a way to stretch and move as much as possible. Go for a walk and keep active. The more we move the better our body responds and the less pain we have for the long run. And that is what we are really looking for…..the long run. And the dance!

The time is almost here for the 2013 Washington State Square and Round Dance Festival. Just a couple of weeks and you will be having a wonderful time dancing to great callers and cuers.

We have a fun filled weekend planned for your dancing enjoyment. Be sure to read your program book and check out the flyers in your registration packet as it will be full of useful information to make your weekend a great one.

There is no need to leave the Three Rivers Convention Center for lunch as there is the Cyber Café right on the premises. Hours and menu are limited, but there will be coffee in the morning and ice cream in the afternoon and evening. The complete hours and menu will be in your registration packet. There are also a multitude of restaurants around the area at the TRCC as well.

The badge dances are planned and ready to go. One will be inside the TRCC and one will be offsite. There will be a map to the offsite badge dance included in your registration packet.

There are activities planned for our solo dancers and youth dancers. Be sure to check you registration packets for last minute information and maps to offsite venues for these activities.

Registration will be open at the Trail End Dance on Thursday night. Speaking of dances, this dance will be called by Jim Hattrick and cued by Bill Holm, so if you are in the area on Thursday night, you will not want to miss this dance. It will be at the TRCC. It is not included in your Festival package price, but for $10.00 per person it is a dance that you will not want to miss.

On Friday morning the dancing will start at 9:00, so registration will be open at 8:00.

The pageant is set for 9:30 on Saturday morning with dancing to start at 12:00. There will also be some silent auction items and raffles during the weekend. We are ready for you and we will see you in a couple of weeks for a weekend filled with great dancing and fun!

Merri Anne HuberCo-ChairmanWeekend in Wine Country

Well it is June 2013 and festival is just around the corner. The Blue Mountain Council is busy tying up loose ends and getting those so called ducks in a row to put on the best dance party of the year. Besides having a fantastic featured caller and cuer heading up the show we have got the best callers and cuers of the Pacific Northwest attending to help make this a funtastic weekend for all.

The week starts off Wednesday June 12th, 7:30 at the Shuffler Shanty in Kennewick with a plus Trail In Dance, Steve Noseck and Kevin Thomaier calling and yours truly cueing. Those with RVs may park their RV round the perimeter of the Shanty parking lot, dry camping there. Thursday June 13th at the convention center another Trail In Dance; Jim Hattrick calling a Mainstream Dance and our own Footnotes Round Dance Editor Bill Holm cueing. For Friday and Saturday we will have you dancing all through the day into the night whether it be square dancing, round dancing or clogging.

Badge dances are in place ready for your participation and enjoyment. The Saturday morning pageant is promised, as always, to be entertaining as well. After the dancing is done for the night there will be after parties that you will need to attend. Friday night will be presented by the 2015 State Festival and On Saturday night the 2014 Festival will have the honor of hosting the after party.

The Three Rivers Convention Center is located right in the middle of everything from hotels and restaurants to shopping; many are within walking distance. There are a variety of RV parks that are at the most just twenty minutes from the Convention Center with hooks ups and electrical. Even though the restaurants are so close you may want to just stay and enjoy what the Cyber Cafe at the convention center has to offer.

We are looking forward to all of the dancers from all over the northwest coming and enjoying the country on the east side of the mountains. The Columbia River is beautiful and the wineries from Yakima to Walla Walla have become world renowned and the pride of the State of Washington. I invite you to visit one or more on your journey. You will truly enjoy the experience.
