NMU Volunteers Help Moosewood Nature Center with Spring Cleanup

PAGE 2 Summer 2009 MOOSEWOOD NATURE CENTER WWW.MOOSEWOOD.ORG

Stop by our Presque Isle center and welcome Andrew Bek as MooseWood’s new program naturalist and staff member. Since early spring, Andrew has been presenting science and nature programs to area schools as well as hosting at the Center. In July, he will be one of the talented instructors at Summer Day Camp 2009.

“MooseWood Nature Center is a current passion because I can share my love and knowledge of nature with young people,” says Bek.

Andrew Bek was born in South Korea and raised in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. After serving in the U.S. Marines he ventured to the Upper Peninsula, en-rolled in NMU and earned a

Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies and a Masters De-gree in Public Administration.

Andrew is a member of the adjunct faculty at Northern Michigan

University. He has also worked in the health care, public policy, technology, and personal growth industries as a certified life coach.

Andrew Bek is an active father to a 9 year-old son and two step children. He is also a dog whisperer to our four legged friends as well as his three “good” dogs. A life-long outdoorsman, Andrew enjoys hunting, fishing, gathering and celebrating nature in every way possible. He brings extensive personal experience, life-long community service, and a wealth of knowledge to MooseWood and we are very pleased to welcome him as part of our team.

MooseWood would also like to welcome two additional staff members. Christina (Tina) Filarski and Christina Hordos are students at Northern Michigan University planning to graduate in 2010. Filarski is a native of Ray, MI working toward a Bache-lor of Science degree with a Zoology major. Hordos, a native of Howell, MI is majoring in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management, with a minor in History.

Stop by and say hello as they host the nature center, present pro-grams at birthday parties, and care for our animals.

Moosewood Nature Center staff and board members took part in the “Spring into Service Day” on Saturday, April 4 with the help of Northern Michigan University student vol-unteers Leah Normand, Jonathan MacQueen, and Laura Smith.

The Saturday was spent sprucing up the Center. Volunteers moved equipment, scrubbed bathrooms and cleaned up the grounds in connection with the Center’s planned expansion under a new lease agreement with the City of Marquette.

The additional space will allow the Center to host more pro-

grams on-site and accommodate more display areas and spe-

cial projects. A BIG THANKS to our volunteers!

What’s New at the Nature Center?

We invite you to “see” and “touch” what’s new at the center:

• Mammal exhibit including furs, skulls, and scat. Guess what mammal belong to which fur pelt, skull, track, or scat!

• A recycled humming bird feeder and food donated to us by Wild Birds Unlimited of Marquette. It has been attracting a female ruby-throated humming bird.

• A little more extra space for more displays. We’ve recently found new happy homes for our guinea pigs.

Visitors decorate their crafts and visit with the animals during the Earth Day Open House held on two consecutive Saturdays in April.

An exciting birthday party awaits your child at MooseWood Nature Center!

Over 200 nature lovers came out in support of Earth Day in April. Teaming together throughout a 2-day celebration of nature, the Superior Watershed Partnership and Northern Options joined MooseWood Nature Center with a single cause in mind—the environment.

“Our goal is to educate...create a heighten awareness and motivate people to be a part of the solution,” says MooseWood Board Member Tiffany Rantanen. “Our hands-on interaction presentations were a big hit, particularly with the kids.”

For example, the youth at the event were especially interested in the “peddle power” exercise bike available that showed them how much energy they needed to create to power a single light bulb.

Additionally, T.J. Brown from Northern Options answered ques-tions and provided energy saving tips. Mary Martin and Carl Lindquist of the Superior Watershed Partnership provided pro-gram information, photos, and membership information.

MooseWood volunteer board members and staff contributed to the event. Program and membership information, a craft for fami-lies, and naturalist led tours of the Presque Isle Bog were offered.

A BIG thank you to our partnering organizations and to the Mar-quette Community for making this truly a very successful event.
