Thoughts from the Outgoing
President
First and foremost I want to thank all
members of 2016-2017 Executive for their
hard work and commitment to maintaining a
vibrant, viable Club. Because of many
methods of advertising we were very
fortunate to have 14 people come to square
dancing with our basic class. The Basic
class this year was energetic and the new
dancers definitely had fun – all have
indicated that they will be returning next
September. Special shout-out and big
thanks to Judy Mercer and Bill Bryan who
were an integral reason for the season’s
success. They diligently followed up with
each new person that came to our open
houses and throughout the whole season
with those that chose to stay. This level
demands more work and commitment from
the coordinators than others and we are very
lucky to have Judy and Bill returning to fill
this key Club position.
This year we say good-bye to
Marilyn Armstrong as a member of the
Executive. Marilyn and her husband Keith
joined Limestone at the beginning of the
Club in 1997 and over the past 20 years she

has served as Plus coordinator, President, Co
President, Past President and lastly as Round
Dance coordinator. Besides the “title”
positions Marilyn has been – and will
continue to be - a valuable member of the
Club who could always be counted on to
help out any way needed. One of her major
accomplishments, along with her husband, is
the annual St Patrick’s Dance and our
resident Leprechaun. Marilyn gave her
heart into being a productive member of our
club for which we say a big THANK YOU.
Marilyn is starting a new chapter in her life
that will focus on relaxation and I wish her
only good things in her life for many years
to come. In the future, you will meet
Marilyn as your corner in a tip as she is not
giving up dancing.
Lastly, I thank the membership and
Executive for their support. The last 2 years
have brought changes, which sometimes are
difficult to accept, however with the support
of the membership they have been
successfully implemented.
Enjoy your summer and I will see you
in the fall in a tip!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
If anyone missed out on the St. Patrick's Day Dance on March the 18th they missed out on a great, FUN day. We almost did not attend because we thought there would be very little Round Dancing to be worth our time and money but after asking the executive for more consideration, they kindly accommodated. We had a Round Dance time at the beginning and then Round Dances between the tips of Square Dancing. Sometimes it was a little boring sitting for so long between Rounds but, we made the best of it and enjoyed it very much when we could get up and dance.
We did hear that some people were not too happy so we would like to remind the Club, as Round Dancers, that your club is called the "Limestone Square
AND ROUND Dance Club". When we don't square dance, it is a long time for us to sit out and if anyone who doesn't round dance, has to sit out too - but for a much shorter time. Please remember that we pay our membership and dues, the same as the rest of the club, and when we attend a dance, we have paid the same ticket price as the rest of the dancers also.
We'd like to thank the Club executive very much for including us in this event and we look forward to being able to attend more in the future, whenever a mixed dance can be planned.

Poem For New Square Dancers
You arrived here as strangers, knowing nothing at all Mixed your rights with your lefts and caused chaos for all. But you were taught with patience, laughter and grace You were turned ‘round and shown your place From circling left to Allemande Thars
Look at you now, you’re Shooting Stars You’re Making Waves and Bending Lines Slipping the Clutch and marching in time You’re Setting Squares and Passing Through Swinging and Starring and Diving Through too You swing yours and I’ll
swing mine
Listen to Dave, he’ll keep you in line. Now you can twirl - California style And Courtesy Turn with a very nice smile. So to Dave and the angels too A bow and a wave and a heartfelt THANK YOU Contributed By Shirley Brown

I’VE BEEN ASKED BY A FEW DANCERS TO INCLUDE SOME SQUARE DANCE GUIDELINES. FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN DANCING FOR A WHILE, THIS WILL BE REVIEW & FOR
OUR NEW DANCERS, I HOPE HELPFUL. I’M SURE I’VE MISSED SOME BUT THESE SHOULD
STAND ALL OF US IN GOOD STEAD WITH OUR FELLOW DANCERS.
SQUARE DANCE ETIQUETTE
I. Never leave a square early. Your ability, or that of your fellow dancers, is no excuse. We
all start at the same level and the only way to get better is to dance. If you become ill or
an emergency arises advise the other members of the square and if possible try to find a
replacement.
II. When trying to find a square to dance in, please do not cut through it but instead, be
mannerly & go around to the first available space nearest you. It is considered "bad
manners" to pass a square needing dancers in order to fill another. If you are looking for a
square, raise your hand as you move across the floor.
III. You will have much more fun if you dance at the level you’ve completed. No one wants
to embarrass themselves or break a square down. If you are explicitly invited to join a
square at your learning level to fill it, then that’s a different situation.
IV. Wearing your name badge will help the other dancers in your square to learn your name..
V. Square and Round dancing requires your best mental and physical alertness. Don't come
to a dance, workshop or class if you have been drinking or under the influence of drugs,
be they legal or not. Your coordination must be at its very best.
VI. Personal cleanliness is important in square and round dancing. If possible always shower
or bathe. Avoid eating garlic or other offenders before attending a dance.
VII. Once a tip is underway, refrain from talking. It is frequently difficult to hear and your
talking may very well prevent someone else from hearing a call.
VIII. Respect the person giving announcements by listening & giving them your full attention.
The speaker deserves the same consideration you would want if you were speaking..
IX. When the music starts, get on the floor. Don't make other dancers wait or the caller "beg"
you to fill the square. If you are a single dancer, get on the floor with your hand up so that
others know you need a partner. If your square is not full, raise your hand with as many
fingers extended, as couples are needed. If two or three couples are squared up and do not
have a hand up, it indicates that they are waiting for someone who has promised to dance
with them. Do not try to square up with them without asking.
X. Get to know other dancers by dancing with people you’re not so familiar with. You never
know who will become your best friend.
XI. Plan to spend the whole evening. If you come late or leave early, it may mean that 3
couples or 7 other people will have to sit out.
XII. Always introduce your partner to others in the square if you don’t know them. Thank
them for dancing with you after the tip.
XIII. It is really appreciated when, at the end of the evening, that all who are able assist in
putting away chairs & tables. As well as helping the co-ordinators, it enable you to
Pag
e19
socialize at an appropriate time. Also, help all of us make visitors feel welcome by
chatting with them during breaks, thanking them for coming & wishing them a safe trip
home.
XIV. And last but not least please remember to have soft hand holds when dancing. Some
people have medical problems that make their hand hurt when clutched too aggressively.
I know that when we get nervous or are used to a different style of square dancing it is
easy to hold on too tightly.
Did you know - "Yellow Rock” means hug your corner. "Red Rock" means hug your partner!
"Hugging is a miracle medicine that can relieve many physical and emotional problems". Some
women do not like strangers hugging them, so be a little careful until you get to know them.
Most men like the tradition. In any case, "Have you hugged somebody today?"
P.S. -- DON'T FORGET "A SMILE ON YOUR FACE HELPS YOUR FEET WORK
BETTER”.
IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO IMPROVE YOUR DANCING & GET MORE FLOOR TIME
