THE WEEK IN REVIEW: WILL PLAYERS TAKE A HIKE
OVER HIKE IN TAKEOUT?
by T.D. Thornton Imagine if management at a racetrack asked horse owners andtrainers to accept an up-front purse cut, in the form of a lowercontractual slice of wagering revenue, so that the bettingtakeout could remain low enough to retain quality horseplayers. The reasoning behind the move would be that the trackwanted to remain competitive as a top-tier wagering option in ashrinking marketplace, and the upside would be that if enoughhorseplayers embraced the low-takeout track, overall bettinghandle would rise, and so would purses. If everything workedout as planned, the larger theoretical pie would more than makeup for the smaller-percentage slice. It=s unlikely any trackmanagement would ever initiate such a conversation in today=spari-mutuel marketplace. It=s also difficult to think that ownersand trainers would embrace any proposition that involvedtrading up-front money for a non-guaranteed future benefit. Yet if you think of the economic model of North American racingas a simplified triangle (whose three sides are comprised ofowners/trainers, track managements, and bettors), and thenswitch around the above-referenced proposition so that thebettors and owners/trainers are on opposite sides of the equation, that pretty much sums up the argument that Keeneland Associationoffered to horseplayers last week when it came to light that thetrack would be increasing betting takeouts (story here). EQUESTRICON DAY ONE BRINGS PLENTY OF
SUBSTANCE by Joe Bianca
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - A good crowd, lots of smiling faces
and healthy debate over a host of hot-button issues comprised
the effective beginning of Equestricon, the first-ever national
horse racing convention, Monday in Saratoga Springs.
Though Equestricon hosted a number of events around town
and at the racetrack Sunday, Monday morning was the opening
bell of a jam-packed two days hosted at the Saratoga Springs
City Center. There were panels, seminars, giveaways and dozens
of booths ranging from industry stalwarts to upstarts. Topics
covered in panel discussions ran the gamut from Thoroughbred
aftercare to handicapping tournaments. This is a slice of my
experience at this decidedly new venture in horse racing
networking and promotion. (Click here to continue p6)

The Week in Review (cont. from p1)
Starting with the upcoming fall meet, Keeneland intends to
hike the take on straight wagers from 16 to 17.5%, and the take
on most exotic wagers will go up from 19 to 22%.
AI think at the end of the day when the handicappers see the
quality of racing we put on, [and] have a great experience when
they come to the track, and know how we=re spending those
monies back to promote the sport at the very highest level, I
believe that they=re going to continue to support our racing,@
Bob Elliston, Keeneland=s vice president of racing and sales, told
me in an Aug. 7 interview.
That=s quite a leap of faith--not just the part about believing
that the Keeneland product will be so irresistibly attractive that
bettors will ignore the increased costs of playing it, but the
implied belief that horseplayers will feel good about footing the
bill to ensure a (theoretically) upgraded product.
AI guess my first reaction is that I am extremely disappointed
that Keeneland would do this to horseplayers,@ Jeff Platt, the
president of the Horseplayers Association of North America, told
me. AMy second reaction and prediction is that this is actually
going to cause purse money to go down, that they=re actually
going to have purse cuts as a result of this, not purse increasesY.
Players are going to bet less as a result of this. There=s no
question in my mind.@
In an attempt to represent views from all three sides of the
triangle, I also left an Aug. 7 voicemail for Rick Hiles, the
president of the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and
Protective Association, asking what owners and trainers thought
about the long-term implications of boosting purses via takeout
hikes, but have not received a call back as of press time.
I wasn=t surprised there was immediate outcry from
horseplayers, including threats of organized betting boycotts
against Keeneland. But I was surprised at the volume and
intensity of those protests.

The level of immediate horseplayer pushback directed at
Keeneland, at least anecdotally, seems to exceed the ire aimed
at Churchill Downs, Inc., when that corporation used the same
Kentucky law to raise takeouts in 2014 at its Louisville flagship
track.
That=s notable in and of itself, because--as we all know--it=s
easy to rail and spew vitriol at
corporate entities when we don=t
like the decisions they make.
But venerable Keeneland has
always been different, enjoying a
uniquely trustworthy position in
the pari-mutuel marketplace. For
decades, that association has
largely been recognized as a
non-profit entity that does right by
the horses, the sport, its traditions,
and horseplayers.
As I was reporting on this story
last Tuesday, I kept several internet
browser windows open to monitor social media feeds and
racing-related message boards that had quickly spiraling threads
devoted to the takeout topic. As the anti-Keeneland backlash
mounted, I was struck by the repeated AHow could they?@ tone
of horseplayers expressing betrayal by a trusted source.
Culling through the myriad complaints yielded three cogent
points that are likely to remain relevant long after the initial
anger has subsided:
" The boycott, if one occurs, might take a bite out of Keeneland=s
autumn race meet handle. But in the grand scheme of things, a
boycott will just be huffing and puffing. The real threat to
Ablowing the house down@ (on a national level, not just at
Keeneland) already exists in the form of a slow but strong
breeze caused by mid-level horseplayers ebbing away from the
United States betting marketplace because they have trouble
justifying the disquieting costs of throwing money at short fields
amid widespread perceptions of not-on-the-level racing.
" While individual players might gripe about the takeout
situation, will they really walk away from betting Keeneland in
favor of C-level tracks whose takeouts are slightly lower?
Keeneland does have a point--quality, nationally prominent
horses and outfits are a big part of the equation. So, if handle
does end up increasing at Keeneland as a result of the takeout
hike, expect lower-tier tracks to assume
they too can follow suit with takeout
increases--even if they don=t have the
top-notch product to similarly ensure
that customers will stick around.

most ominous long-range problem on

Roxborough=s post left me with the

>Brown on green= double at Arlington Trainer Chad Brown scored an unprecedented Grade I double
on Saturday, becoming the first conditioner to sweep Arlington
Park=s two signature grass races on the same afternoon.
>TDN Rising Star= Beach Patrol (Lemon Drop Kid) scored in the
GI Arlington Million less than an hour after Dacita (Chi) (Scat
Daddy) took top honors in the GI Beverly D. S.
Each Brown trainee won by a hard-earned half-length, and
neither was favored in the betting.
The victories also represented a Grade I double for owner Sol
Kumin, who has an interest in the partnerships of both horses.

Oscar Performance | Four Footed Fotos
Kumin told the Chicago Sun-Times that the deep competition
in both races made him consider not attending the races in
person.
AI almost didn=t come. There=s so many good European horses,
and they=re hard to handicap,@ Kumin said. AI didn=t think we
were going to win two races today. No shot.@
The wins were Brown=s second and fourth victories,
respectively, in the Million and Beverly D. In fact, he=s now won
three consecutive runnings of the Beverly D.
AI=ve watched [Brown] climb. He went from being a really good
trainer to, in my opinion, being arguably in the conversation for
best in the world,@ Kumin told the Sun-Times. AHe=s 38 years old
and works as hard as anybody. And he is incredibly talented.@
The most visually impressive Grade I win on Saturday, though,
belonged to Oscar Performance (Kitten=s Joy) in the Secretariat
S.
Tracking the action as a stalking second for most of the
10-furlong journey, Oscar Performance loomed as a menacing
presence until he was fully unleashed in the Arlington stretch.
The 3-year-old ridgling relished being roused for the drive,
exhibiting a powerful kick to the wire as an all-out pack of
pursuers chased in vain 2 1/4 lengths in his wake.
Last year=s GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf winner has now won
three straight graded stakes this season after faltering as the
beaten favorite in his first two 2017 tries.
It=s post time (at multiple tracks) News out of The Jockey Club Round Table conference on
Sunday that conflicting simulcast post times are costing the
industry $400 million annually was an eye-popping revelation
(story here). Finally, someone has put a lost-dollar number to
the annoying, nonsensical practice of major tracks scheduling
races right on top of one another--and it=s a huge number.
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 11 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • AUGUST 15, 2017
The author at Equestricon
Granted, no industry entity has the resources to refute or
confirm the magnitude of the study undertaken by the
management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, so this is
only one party=s lost-handle prognostication. But even if
McKinsey was way off--say by a factor of 10--wouldn=t $40
million in lost handle still be worth chasing down and
recovering?
The coordination of post times seems like another project the
industry could have tackled on its own long ago for relatively
short money. I=d bet that for well under $1 million annually, the
top five racing associations in the nation could get together,
commission someone to write software that displays post times
like an airport shows departing planes, and hire a team of
competent every-day, industry-wise schedulers to oversee the
grid like air-traffic controllers.
The goal would be for the top five tracks to adhere to strict,
well-spaced post times, and the tracks would have to cede
control over optimizing those nationally coordinated post times
during the day to the independent scheduling grid controllers
they hire. So if there=s a delay at Belmont Park, the controllers
tell Gulfstream Park and Churchill Downs to adjust their post
times accordingly to maintain smooth scheduling--not the other
way around, with tracks telling the controllers when they=ll run.
The incentive for compliance will be fully optimized handle for
everyone.
As McKinsey exec Ben Vonwiller pointed out during his
presentation, lower-level tracks wouldn=t need to directly
participate in the optimized scheduling grid (in fact, they
couldn=t, because the maximum number of tracks that can run
races five minutes apart over the course of an hour is only six).
Yet those other tracks would still see some trickle-down benefits
from being able to look at the national post time grid and decide
on their own where to best position their races in the gaps that
remain.
In addition, just the fact that the industry would be taking a
proactive step to correct a problem simulcasting customers have
been complaining about for years would certainly have some
ancillary public-relations value.
Global management consulting companies like McKinsey make
money by identifying problems and then selling solutions to
those problems. The racing industry should have seen and
solved the decades-long post time conflict on its own long ago.
But now that the $400 million lost-revenue number has been
identified and publicly released in the context of a
well-respected industry forum, perhaps the sport=s powers that
be will be compelled to act.
Plenty of Substance at Equestricon (cont. from p1)
The first thing you notice when you walk in the door is how
well-staffed Equestricon is. There are employees everywhere
you turn with AAsk Me Anything@ shirts directing guests to the
meeting room or booth
of their desire.
Everything was
organized smartly and
the venue, which I had
never been to in over a
decade coming to
Saratoga, was big and
modern.
Optimism permeated
throughout the main
hall of the convention,
with cheery
representatives ready to
talk horse racing in
every capacity. While
there was a feeling-out
process as to the
direction of the event with so many disparate interests side-by-
side, everyone I spoke to saw Equestricon as a net positive, and
most importantly, an innovative idea that could beget other
innovation in a sport sorely in need of it.
The most engrossing part of my day was the Coast-to-Coast
Marketing Panel, sponsored by this very publication. A group of
five racetrack representatives broke down what they were
doing to grow racing as a business in their jurisdiction, followed
by a lively question-and-answer session that often challenged
those representatives. A myriad of viewpoints and strategies for
bringing new fans to the track were discussed, and Equestricon
did a good job to put officials from greatly varying size of
operations in the mix, as NYRA=s Director of Marketing Darran
Miner sat alongside Remington Park racing analyst and
handicapper Kathy O=Hara.

Tom Durkin and Ramon Dominguez
chat with fans
Miner talked up NYRA=s Adigital transformation@ in the last few
years, saying that the organization=s database of fans has gone
from 60 to 70,000 to over 220,000 names, which has let them
better sell tickets and communicate with
fans. He also noted that NYRA=s Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram followings have more
than doubled and that their choice to market
Abig event@ days like the six-Grade I Belmont
Stakes Day, has increased turnout in younger
demographics.
O=Hara, a former jockey whose career was
cut short by injuries, discussed the
challenges of running a racetrack in
Oklahoma City, where there are over 100
casinos within the state and more than
15,000 slot machines in the city. She also
touched on the challenges of keeping up
with an increasingly modern city when the
talk turned to upgrading racetrack facilities.
C.J. Johnsen, the director of broadcasting
and wagering at Kentucky Downs, also
brought a unique viewpoint--that of a track
running five days a year trying to stand out in an overcrowded
racing calendar. Johnsen spearheaded a marked takeout
decrease in 2015 and the results have been overwhelmingly
positive, with handle at the Franklin oval jumping in each of the
last two years. Kentucky Downs has also drastically improved its
presentation, with high-definition broadcasts
and additional angles added to displaying races
over the quirky, European-style turf course.
AOur main goal has been to be a catalyst for
innovation in the industry,@ Johnsen said. AIt=s
been hard having only five days, but we
lowered takeout, we partnered with Old
Friends, we were one of the first tracks to have
barn surveillance, we installed the Duralock rail
and this year we=re beginning the Jockey 7
wager, where you can bet on a jockey to have
the most wins in seven races and part of the
commission will go the PDJF.@
Innovation has always been a strong suit of
Keeneland, and Director of Marketing Christa
Marrillia talked about how their technological
advances and ABetologists@ at the track have
improved business, while Arlington=s Director
of Marketing Alyssa Ali impressed as well,
noting among other initiatives the track=s engagement with the
larger sports-crazy community of Chicago.

Things got interesting when Christian Hellmers of the
Horseplayers reality television show asked a question about
what tracks have done to market, not just the handicapping
aspect of racing, but the gamblers themselves. He posited that
the sport had done a lousy job of celebrating the winners at the
racetrack and making apparent how much money can be made
playing a cerebral game like the horses, thus costing themselves
a chance at the sophisticated, analytical, player who may have
put those talents into something like Wall Street.
Miner responded that NYRA markets the winners of their
handicapping tournaments, but said that most big players, the
ones betting millions of dollars a year, don=t want the
recognition and Awould generally rather do their own thing.@
O=Hara added that Remington will be producing a cable
television show in 2018 that does follow some of the biggest
bettors and personalities in Oklahoma horse racing. Johnsen said
baby steps were generally the way to go with new players, and
Miner concurred, noting that even the terminology of betting
horses can be intimidating for newcomers.
Perspectives: Social Media in Horse Racing sponsored by the
Maryland Horse Breeders= Association and Jim McKay Maryland
Million Day was also a fascinating discussion, one of a rapidly-
changing landscape in horse racing=s growing online footprint.
This crowd was not as big as the one for the marketing panel,
but skewed much younger and had power players in racing
media like Pat Cummings and Nick Luck, who will be giving
Tuesday=s keynote speech, in attendance and asking questions.
The half-dozen speakers on this panel, all directors of social
media in one form or another, had interesting things to say and
a wealth of knowledge and experience despite all being
decidedly young. All of them agreed that horse racing was a
natural linkup with social media, especially on platforms like
Instagram, being such a visually arresting sport. They also all
found gratitude in their work of bringing the behind-the-scenes
experience of horse racing to thousands of people who don=t
necessarily have those connections.
Susie Raisher, who runs social media for Centennial Farm and
used to have the same position at NYRA, talked about how
important community-building through social media has always
been in racing, going back to the AOL message boards. As a
former ESPN racing message board goer, I nodded in
agreement.
Cummings asked a pointed question about racing=s obsession
with television ratings and how that is at odds with the trend
toward livestreaming. The panelists all said that broadcasting
contracts have gotten in the way of their ability to livestream
content, whether internationally or locally.

Strike the Tiger (stall) and Lady Aurelia
with long time Wesley Ward groom Michael Clark.
Woodbine=s Dawn Kay said, Asocial is supposed to be across
borders and our horse racing audience isn=t always local. It=s a
big industry shift in broadcasting.@
Raisher was asked to give her advice for racing entities to be
more effective in their social media reach and said, AStop using
channels that are giving you low ROI on your business because
you think you should be on it. Livestreaming is huge and social in
general has taken over the role of a website. Millenials go
straight to social instead of websites. It was built into us because
social came before mobile optimized sites.
If day one was an indication, day two of Equestricon is going to
bring more thought-provoking debates on the future of racing,
both big picture and small. These discussions need to be had in
public with a lot of perspectives having input. So far, so good.

RETIRED LONG AGO, STRIKE THE TIGER STILL
HELPING WARD WIN IN UK by Bill Finley
Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) likes having a friend around, and
who can blame her? Trainer Wesley Ward shipped his star filly
Thursday to York, England for the Aug. 25 G1 Nunthorpe S. and
didn=t want her to be by herself on the plane or for the van ride
from the airport in Scotland to the race course. So he has
enlisted an old pal to accompany her on the trip, former Royal
Ascot winner Strike the Tiger (Tiger Ridge).
It=s a glamorous assignment for the now 10-year-old, whose
post-racing life could have easily taken a wrong turn. He=s a
one-hit wonder, winning the Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot in
2009, giving Ward his first winner at the meet. But he was
unable to sustain that top level of competition, and while he did
finish second in the GIII Transylvania S. in 2010 at Keeneland,
what followed was an all-too-typical decline down the class
ladder.
By 2014, he was running in $12,500 and $16,000 claimers at
Tampa Bay Downs and struggling to so much as pick up an
occasional check.
With Strike the Tiger having obvious sentimental value to
Ward, he kept close tabs on the horse and told his connections
that whenever they were ready to retire him, he wanted him
back.
AHe was making his way down the ladder and I went to Kellyn
Gorder, who had him, and said that whenever you are ready to
retire the horse, I would give him a wonderful home for the rest
of his life,@ he said. AHe was very gracious, a wonderful guy. He
didn=t require any payment. He gave me the horse.@
Ward has done the same for many of his horses that start to
fall through the cracks and race in claiming races. He=ll reacquire
them and put them to use as stable ponies.
AWith a lot of these horses, they really don=t like getting
turned out,@ Ward said. ASome do, some don=t. I have a whole
farm full of them down in Florida that I have retired. In Ocala, I
collect all my old horses. I have 13 ex-racehorses that we rotate
throughout the year and use as ponies.@
Strike the Tiger, who was reacquired by Ward shortly after his
last race, a Mar. 5, 2014 claimer at Tampa, quickly adapted to
his new job and did so well that he was assigned to the stable=s
brightest star, Lady Aurelia.
AHe fell right into his role as a pony and he=s wonderful with all
the horses,@ Ward said. AHe ponies Lady Aurelia by himself. He=s
just a real gentle soul as a horse. I just can=t let him take her
behind the gate because when he goes near the gate he acts
differently because he remembers his old days as a war horse.@
Realizing that Lady Aurelia probably wouldn=t be happy
traveling all the way to England by herself and without her best
buddy, Ward got permission from the Stonestreet team to bring
Strike the Tiger along. According to Matt Haugh, the U.S.
representative for IRT, the company that will ship the Ward
horses to England, bringing Strike the Tiger only added about
20% to the price tag.
AI think it=s great, what Wesley is doing,@ Haug said. AAs soon as
I heard Strike the Tiger, that name rang a bell, sounded familiar.
Sure enough, he was in our database. In 2009, we shipped him
over there and have been doing it for Wesley from day one. It=s
kind of neat to see him return to the scene of the crime, so to
speak.@
Haugh said this is the first time he can ever recall a stable pony
accompanying an American horse on a trip overseas.
AUsually, I=m always going with a few horses over there, but
this time Lady Aurelia was the only one going over to race and

said. AShe came out of the last race really well. I do go back and

three, three-and-a-half week break where we don=t do much
with her. The two months between races is ideal and I think

ARCI ANNOUNCES PENALTY REVIEW The Association of Racing Commissioners International will
conduct an overall review of its recommended penalty
guidelines for medication and doping violations, the
organization announced in a press release Monday.
ASome have argued that the recommended penalties may not
be tough enough for the most egregious violations or that
isolated minor offenses are treated too harshly,@ ARCI President
Ed Martin said in the release. AThis has not been examined in
depth for many years and the board believes this review is
overdue.@
RCI Chair Jeff Colliton, the chairman of the Washington Racing
Commission, assigned the review to the Drug Testing Standards
and Practices Committee. Committee chair Duncan Patterson,
the chair of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission,
will coordinate, in consultation with committee members and
industry representatives.
The ARCI has also updated its Model Rules of Racing to allow
stewards greater flexibility in deciding whether to deny the
purse and disqualify a horse for lessor violations of racing=s
medication rules. Version 8.1 of the model, which can be viewed
at www.arci.com, permits the consideration of mitigating factors
in deciding whether to deny a purse for some violations
involving substances requiring a AClass C@ penalty. Consideration
of mitigating circumstances has long been permitted for Class B
penalty violations and this change extends current policy to
lessor offenses.
WALDEN DISPERSING BLOODSTOCK(Press Release Follows)
After more than 30 years as a staple in the Thoroughbred
breeding and racing community, Ben Walden, Jr. has announced
the full dispersal of more than 50 horses owned by he and his
wife, Elaine, at the upcoming Keeneland September and
Keeneland November sales.
AThe last two years have brought forth several Christian
Ministry opportunities in which I have found myself investing
more and more time,@ said Walden. AElaine and I have become
the host of an inventory and distribution facility for FirstLove
Publications, a Simi Valley, California-based book ministry that
distributes titles on sound Biblical doctrine and evangelism all
over the world, free of charge. It is very difficult to be successful
today in the Thoroughbred industry without a singular focus and
relentless commitment. Our farm, Paul=s Mill, is on the market,
so this step is a natural part of our progression.

He wanted us to give it up. But we believe He does.@
The Waldens' full dispersal will include six yearlings at

A major component of Walden=s business approach through
the years has been to buy and develop horse farms. He founded
Vinery in 1985, and over the next 12 years built it into a
successful commercial farm with over 30 stallions and a huge
sales presence at the annual Keeneland September sales.
Among Vinery=s three leading freshman sires was Red Ransom,
who Walden purchased from Paul Mellon=s Rokeby Stable by
Asealed bid@ as a non-stakes-winning son of Roberto that had set
a track record at Saratoga in his first start as a 2-year-old.
In 2000, the Waldens purchased 200 acres on the corner of
Iron Works Pike and Newtown Pike from Castleton Farm. Named
Gracefield, they developed the farm over a seven-year period
before selling it to Lisa Lourie, who renamed it Spy Coast Farm.
On behalf of Brad Kelley, Walden purchased Hurricane Hall from
Dinwiddie Lampton in 2005, and he became partners in the
business with Kelly, Pat Madden and David Hanley. Several
restorations were made to Hurricane Hall under Walden=s
management, including the addition of a one-mile Polytrack
uphill gallop, and such top racehorses as Artie Schiller, Bellamy
Road and English Channel were brought in off the track and
given their respective starts at stud.
After the partnership at Hurricane Hall was dissolved in 2008,
Walden acquired Pauls Mill in Versailles. The 265-acre farm was
virtually rebuilt for horses after Walden acquired the property in
2008. Pauls Mill is currently for sale.
APart of my passion for this business was building farms from
the ground up, and finding broodmares from female families
with lasting value,@ Walden said.
Walden is responsible for breeding over 100 stakes winners to
date. Among the Grade I winners he bred are Breeders= Cup
champions Corinthian and Artax, the latter capturing an Eclipse
Award in 1999 as champion sprinter.

Literata showed grit to fend off all challengers and annex
Saratoga=s Monday feature. The chestnut gradually climbed
through the allowance ranks in recent years and earned a
second stakes placing when she came home a distant second
behind the undefeated Kathryn the Wise (Uncle Mo) in
Belmont=s one-mile Critical Eye S. May 29. She entered
Monday=s affair off a four-length win in a Finger Lakes allowance
July 22--a race that emerged as a key race when third-finishing
Five Star Rampage (Quality Road) returned to capture the Jack
Betta Be Rite S. over nearly identical conditions to the Saratoga
Dew just minutes earlier in the afternoon. Showing good early
speed, Literata pressed the pace from the two path through a
half-mile in :49.18 and moved to take control on the far turn.
Traveling comfortably, but coming under fire from a pair of
rivals on both sides, she dug in to find more and reported home
a narrow winner.
AWe are just happy to be here. It worked out well for us,@
winning conditioner Rudy Rodriguez commented. AAll the credit
has to go to Irad [Ortiz, Jr.]. He kept the filly very close and most
of these horses don't want to go that far, so I think the key was
to keep her close to the pace.@

HEAVENLY SCORE (f, 3, Even the Score--Celestial Crown, by
Holy Bull) showed class from the outset of her career, parlaying

sprinting over the inner track at Aqueduct in January. Fifth in the
Busher S. Feb. 25, the gray checked in second in the six-furlong
Cicada S. in Ozone Park Mar. 25. She was a good third in a six-
furlong turf sprint allowance at Belmont May 3 and was last
seen in an even fourth-place effort in the course-and-distance
Coronation Cup S. July 31. Sent postward as the 5-2 second
choice coming back on two weeks rest here, Heavenly Score
emerged from the gate in midpack and advanced to secure a
spot tracking the pace along the rail behind a quarter-mile in
:21.65. Angled out to avoid a tiring rival soon after that juncture,
she collared pacesetting Orecchiette (Harlan=s Holiday) in upper

winner Buy Sell Hold (Violence), the bay broke alertly from the

favorites dueled through a quarter-mile in :21.58. Shaken up
coming off the turn as well-regarded first-timer Gidu (Ire)

VIGOR (f, 3, War Front--Might, by Arch) delivered as the heavy
favorite to graduate from the maiden ranks Monday at the Spa.
Fifth in her February debut around two turns at Gulfstream after
flashing speed, the bay was a good third in a 6 1/2-panel main
track dash at Keeneland Apr. 15 and filled out that same
position traveling six furlongs on the turf at Belmont May 27.
Bet down to 3-5 favoritism here, the filly broke a bit inwardly,
but was quickly corrected to press the pace through a quarter-
mile in :21.44. Taking control with ease entering the stretch,
Vigor darted clear to a 3 1/4-length success over first-time
starter Boom Boom Boom (More Than Ready), who missed the

THE WEEKLY WRAP
by Tom Peacock
Two juvenile sons of Scat Daddy provided Aidan O=Brien and
Coolmore with another rewarding afternoon=s work at the
Curragh on Sunday - yet it would be difficult to find a pair that
were further apart at this stage of their careers. Sioux Nation
was up to the task of providing a remarkable 16th victory for
O=Brien in the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S, just an hour after
Mendelssohn had looked anything but the finished article in a
1m maiden.
The former, a January foal from John Halley=s Fethard
Bloodstock, seems a colt for the here and now. There is sprinting
form in the family of his dam Dream The Blues (Ire) (Oasis
Dream {GB}) and this was already a sixth start for the winner of
the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot. It did not seem at all surprising
to learn that O=Brien is looking at pointing him towards the
Middle Park and National S. and maybe even the Breeders= Cup.
For Mendelssohn, the path will have to be trodden with far
more care. The $3-million purchase from Keeneland=s
September Yearling Sale was not born until mid-May but
expectations would have to be high given he is a half-brother to
Beholder (Henny Hughes) and Into Mischief (Harlan=s Holiday),
who were both top-level winners at two. Green on his debut
behind classy stablemate The Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), he
wandered around on the track this time despite showing enough
quality to hold off the newcomer Andesh (Ire) (Medicean {GB}).

GOFFS ORBY CATALOGUE ON-LINE Goffs have released their much anticipated Orby Yearling Sale
catalogue which can now be viewed here. 464 yearlings have
been catalogued for the two-day sale which takes place Sept 26-
27 and past graduates have been busy advertising the merits of
the sale as recently as last weekend when Washington DC (Ire)
(Zoffany {Ire}), a i340,000 purchase in 2014, took his earnings
to over i500,000 when winning the G3 At The Races Phoenix
Sprint S. at The Curragh on Sunday. At an elite level the sale=s
poster boy Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {Ire}) has established himself
as one of the world=s leading milers following Group 1 wins this
year in the G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. and the G1 Queen Anne S.
The Richard Fahey trained 4-year-old was purchased by David
and Emma Armstrong=s Highfield Farm for i105,000 in 2014.
Commenting on the launch of the Orby Sale catalogue, Goffs
Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, AA Goffs Orby yearling
[Ribchester] is the best horse in the world to have been sold in
Europe. That is certainly a point worth dwelling on.@

Mendelssohn (hip 454) in the ring at Keeneland | Keeneland
The Weekly Wrap Cont. from p1
While Sioux Nation has his Group 1 and has earned 20 times
what Mendelssohn has on the track so far, it would be
fascinating to know what the standings between them will be by
this point next year. Ryan Moore=s view would be interesting,
but he would be allowed a little while to collect his thoughts.
The jockey seems to be able to defy the laws of time, making it
to County Kildare to ride Mendelssohn just over 14 hours after
partnering Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) into third in the GI
Arlington Million S.
So too does Frankie Dettori, who was out of luck with
Mekhtaal (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in Chicago before being at
his very best to force Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) home in
the G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville itself the following
afternoon. Al Wukair will have blown away any of the jet lag as
he took some riding, even attempting to take a chunk out of
narrow runner-up Inns Of Court (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in
the final stages. They will have to settle their differences back at
Andre Fabre=s stable but both are entitled to be set grand
autumn targets as third-placed Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet
{Aus}) is a proven campaigner at this level.
Carr On Track For Record Success... Another achievement worth marking is that of Ruth Carr, who
equalled her best ever tally of 43 when Racquet (GB) (Pastoral
Pursuits {GB}) aced a handicap at Ayr on Saturday. Carr has
followed in the example of her renowned late grandfather David
Chapman and places great importance in turning her horses out
in the paddock. After almost identical totals for the past few
seasons, the results have been outstanding with 27 winning
horses from the 47 to have run in 2017. Pick of the lot has been
the popular grey Sovereign Debt (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who
took the G2 Sandown Mile and the G3 Diomed S. at Epsom.
AWe started off pretty well so it wasn=t a massive surprise, but
still very nice,@ said Carr. AWe did put in a new gallop, which I
think has helped some of them get going earlier. We used to be
on natural sand, which could get difficult when it was wet, but
now we have a carpet fibre gallop in a different place. We=ve
just been doing what we=re doing and having the good horse has
helped. Otherwise, it=s about placing handicappers in the right
races.@

Menuisier Is Bouncing Back... It would not be out of the question for trainer David Menuisier
to improve upon last year=s best tally of 15, too, albeit from
what has developed out of a rescue mission. The usually
cheerful Frenchman, long-time assistant to John Dunlop but now
based at Amanda Perrett=s Pulborough complex, did not even
get a winner on the board for 2017 until mid-July, having
discovered his horses were suffering from a low-level virus.
Four more have been added since then and most excitingly with
Vintager (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who was a commanding
winner of a strong-looking newcomers= maiden at Newmarket.
AIt=s made me a lot happier,@ Menuisier chuckled. AIt was a big
call to shut the yard. From the Dante meeting until the
beginning of July, we didn=t have a runner and we were just
hacking them for four weeks. Luckily we had the full support of
all the owners and it looks as if we are getting the horses back to
their best.@
Vintager got loose going down to the start and left his groom
with bruises, so the 65,000gns purchase for Gail Brown=s
syndicate will have to be on better behaviour if allowed to
follow a possible route of either the G3 Acomb S. at York or the
Solario S. at Sandown.
AHe showed different sides we=ve not seen before. He=s like a
pony at home so his behaviour was puzzling and very out of
character. Hopefully he will settle down,@ Menuisier said.
ARichard Frisby bought him but I saw him at the sales and I=ve
always liked Mastercraftsman as a stallion. You get some weak
ones but this was always quite a good-looking horse. Although
his dam is by Orpen, we=ve always thought of him as a
3-year-old not a 2-year-old.

AI don=t tend to work my 2-year-olds with older horses and I
had only run my first one of the season the day before and he
finished second. I suppose looking at the pedigrees in the race,
he had no right to win, but I try not to think about the
opposition, if you do that you get cold feet. I=m not saying he
was winning his gallops by 20 lengths at home but he was
working well.@
Flag-bearer Contrapposto (Ire) (Cacique {Ire}) is slowly on the
comeback trail after pulling a muscle in the Dante and there
could be quite a few more useful juveniles on early evidence.
AWe=ll have to see what happens when they run, maybe I=ll end
up with five group horses, I don=t know,@ he said. ABut I do think
they=re nice - I=ve got 16 or 17 2-year-olds and I think nine were
from Tattersalls Book 1 so they=re well bred.@
Anniversary Marked At Brighton... It was 40 years ago that Sheikh Mohammed owned his first
winner at Brighton, so there was an enjoyable symmetry that his
son Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum=s colours
should be carried to victory in the feature race of last week=s
August Festival. The majestic trophy for the Marathonbet
Sportsbook Brighton Challenge Cup is kept at the course and
traces back more than a century, having been won twice in the
late 60s by Park Top, who went on to land a Coronation Cup and
King George.
Curlew River (GB) is no Park Top and the race is now a Class 4
handicap, but she is proving a good advertisement for the first
3-year-old crop of her sire Casamento (Ire) as she has gone from
strength to strength for trainer Mark Johnston. She took this
with ease and some black type ought to be within her range.

Unfortunately some ordinary weather plagued the second
stage of what used to be known as the >Sussex Fortnight=
following Goodwood, probably reducing what can be an
impressive attendance to merely a decent one. It is an event at a
unique racecourse in one of Britain=s most vibrant towns, and
one that owners Arena Racing Company must continue to
nurture and cherish. If not beloved of all trainers, it is certainly a
personal favourite. The great man himself ought to mark the
anniversary with a visit sometime soon, too.
Catalogue Released for Goffs Orby Cont. from p1
AOver the last few years the Orby catalogue has featured an
ever-increasing share of the best-bred yearlings available and
that quality can be seen through the performances of our
graduates on the track,@ he said. AWith so many leading
breeders choosing Orby as their first choice for more of their
best yearlings, this can only increase the chances of buyers
finding their own Ribchester of the future. It is our confident
prediction that the 2017 catalogue is better than ever, making

AL WUKAIR That old phrase about horses for courses was in
evidence again as Al Wukair thrust his nose ahead
at exactly the right moment in the G1 Prix Jacques
le Marois two days ago. Deauville was the scene
of the first Group 1 success by this progressive
colt, just as it had been for his sire Dream Ahead, winner of the
2010 Prix Morny. The sequence continues with Dream Ahead=s
sire Diktat, who set off down the road to becoming Europe=s
champion older sprinter of 1999 with his first G1 victory in the
Prix Maurice de Gheest.
The Jacques le Marois has itself been won in the past by three
consecutive generations of another male line, thanks to Dubai
Millennium in 1999, Dubawi in 2005 and Makfi in 2010.
Part of the explanation for these sequences is that Deauville,
despite its being a glamorous seaside resort, is not immune to
rain during the month of August. According to Timeform, the
1999 wins by Diktat and Dubai Millennium were respectively
gained on soft and heavy going. The ground was dead for
Dubawi=s win, good for Dream Ahead=s and soft for Makfi. It was
soft again for Al Wukair. In other words, these sequences owed
something to an inherited ability to handle give in the ground--
not that Dream Ahead was a one-dimensional mud-lark. True,
he strolled home nine lengths clear in the G1 Middle Park S. on
soft going but the ground was on the firm side when he added
three further Group 1 successes as a 3-year-old. Nor does Al
Wukair need soft ground, though he clearly handles it very well.
The ground was on the firm side when he ran on strongly to take
third place behind Churchill and Barney Roy in the G1 2000
Guineas. Cont. p6

Dream Ahead | Ballylinch Stud
Pedigree Insights: Al Wukair Cont.
Al Wukair spearheads the 86-strong second crop by Dream
Ahead which also includes the listed winners Visionary and
Tisbutadream, as well as Boos and Dream of Dreams, who were
Group 2-placed at two years. His larger first crop has produced
seven horses which have either won or placed at group level,
including the Group 2-winning sprinter Donjuan Triumphant and
Group 3 winner Final Frontier.
He is clearly doing quite well, but it was always likely that
Dream Ahead=s stallion career would not be plain sailing.
Although he was talented enough to share the title of champion
2-year-old with Frankel before becoming the champion
3-year-old sprinter, the excellence of his racing career had to be
weighed against a couple of less attractive aspects.
He had to shrug off the stigma of having been cast off by
Darley for as little as $11,000 as a weanling, and there was also
the generally disappointing stallion career of his sire Diktat. On
the plus side, his grandsires Warning and Cadeaux Genereux
both ranked among the stalwarts of the British industry and his
first three dams--Land of Dreams, Sahara Star and Vaigly Star--
were all very talented sprinters with plenty of juvenile ability.
Like many a young sire, Dream Ahead saw the size of his book
fall over his first three years at Ballylinch Stud. It fell to 89 mares
in his third season in 2014 before some impressive prices at the
2014 yearling sales contributed to a resurgence in 2015,
with136 mares. However, there was a change of plans in
December last year. Having been advertised as standing at
Ballylinch once again in 2017, it was announced that Dream
Ahead had been leased to France to stand at Haras de
Grandcamp.
This made good sense, as Dream Ahead and his sire Diktat had
jointly gained three of their Group 1 successes in France. France
was also the setting for some of the best efforts by his leading
son Donjuan Triumphant, winner of the G2 Criterium de
Maisons-Laffitte and runner-up in the G1 Prix Maurice de
Gheest. The Grandcamp team had probably also been
impressed by the fledgling Al Wukair. After a winning debut in
September, he had accounted for the useful fillies Gold Luck and
Hebah to take the Prix Isonomy, a listed race over a mile. The
initial deal was reportedly for Dream Ahead to stand for a year
at Grandcamp, but Al Wukair=s Group 1 success in France surely
makes an extension likely.
As I mentioned earlier, Dream Ahead excelled over six and
seven furlongs, as might be expected of a colt of his pedigree.
However, Al Wukair is a different type. Andre Fabre had at one
stage intended to aim him at the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club and
Frankie Dettori believes a mile and a quarter is within the colt=s
compass.
A glance at the colt=s pedigree explains why. His second dam is
Caerlina, a daughter of Nijinsky=s Prix du Jockey-Club winner
Caerleon. Mention of Caerlina=s name revives memories of a
wonderful sequence for the Nijinsky clan in Europe=s 1991
middle-distance classics.
Over an eight-day period in June, the Prix du Jockey-Club, the
Derby, Oaks and Prix de Diane all fell to horses either sired by
sons of Nijinsky or produced by one of his daughters. Green
Dancer started the sequence when his son Suave Dancer handed
out a four-length defeat to the future Arc winner Subotica in the
Jockey-Club. Next came the five-length Derby success of
Caerleon=s son Generous. The Oaks produced an even more
impressive performance, when Jet Ski Lady--out of Nijinsky=s
daughter Bemissed--romped home 10 lengths clear.

Gidu (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), knocked down to Justin Casse for
Zayat Stables at last year=s Arqana August Yearling Sale for i410 000,
ran second on debut at Saratoga on Monday. Click here for the race
replay. AHe=s the one horse everyone asks us about,@ Justin Zayat
told the TDN on Monday. AWe always thought he had plenty of ability
in the mornings, but it was good to see it on the racetrack.
It was a very encouraging effort. We will see how he comes out
of the race, chat with Todd [Pletcher], and pick another
spot for him. I=m looking forward to going back to
the yearling sales in Europe this year.@ | Arqana
Pedigree Insights: Al Wukair Cont.
Finally, it was the Prix de Diane, which saw Caerlina prove too
strong for Magic Night, a filly who went on to win the G1 Prix
Vermeille and to finish second in the Arc and the Japan Cup.
It=s a reminder of how quickly things can change in the
bloodstock world that the Nijinsky male line has virtually died
out in Europe and North America. This fairly rapid drift towards
extinction is all the more surprising in view of the fact that the
brilliant Nijinsky sired more than 20 Group 1-winning sons.
Among them were three winners of the Derby, plus winners of
the English, Irish and French 2000 Guineas. He also sired two
winners of the King George and an Arc winner, and his sons
sired two winners each of the King George and the Arc. His sons
also featured winners of the Kentucky Derby, the Prix du
Jockey-Club and even the Breeders= Cup Sprint.
The Prix de Diane represented the pinnacle of Caerlina=s
career, though she had earlier finished second in the G1 Prix
Marcel Boussac and third in the Poule d=Essai des Pouliches.
Caerlina=s dam, the Top Ville mare Dinalina, represented a
quality female line tracing back to Dorina, a top-class racemare
whose victories included 1926 Prix de Diane. Dorina also landed
the Grand Criterium and Prix Vermeille, as well as finishing
second in the Arc.
Dorina became the ancestress of several top-notch winners,
including the classic winners Honeylight and Crepello for Sir
Victor Sassoon, as well as the Gold Cup winner Twilight Alley.
Another branch did well for the Aga Khan, with Al Wukair=s
fourth dam Shahinaaz becoming the dam of the high-class stayer
Karadar (Doncaster Cup) and second dam of the champion older
mare Kartajana, whose wins featured the G1 Prix Ganay.
As Karadar and Twilight Alley showed, this family is not short
of stamina. When Wendylina, a half-sister to Caerlina, was
mated to the champion sprinter Oasis Dream the outcome was
Sri Putra, who showed very smart form at up to a mile and a
half.
It is going to be interesting to see how Al Wukair=s career
develops, but he has surely already booked himself a place at his
owner=s Haras de Bouquetot. His prospects won=t be harmed by
the fact that his dam, the 2-year-old mile winner Macheera, is a
daughter of Machiavellian. Machiavellian mares are responsible
for such popular stallions as Shamardal, Dark Angel and Zoffany.
There could be more to come, as the young, unproven stallions
with a dam by Machiavellian include the 2015 Prix Jean Prat
winner Territories and last year=s July S. and Richmond S. winner
Mehmas. The latter having carried the same Al Shaqab colours
as Al Wukair.
NEW MINIMUM RATING REQUIREMENTS The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and Flat Pattern
Committee (FPC) plan to introduce minimum rating criteria for
all Group 1 races other than those restricted to 2-year-olds.
From 2018 onwards no horse will be permitted to run in a
non-2-year-old Group 1 race unless it has achieved an official
rating of at least 80 by the day before the confirmation stage of
the race, or in the absence of an official rating that their
racecourse performance(s) have been assessed by the
handicapper as being 80 or more.
Commenting on the news Ruth Quinn, director of international
racing & racing development for the BHA, said, AThe question of
whether the races that form the pinnacle of our sport should
require a minimum standard of competitiveness from equine
participants is one that has been discussed in the past, but
without an agreement being reached.@
Cont. p8

New Minimum Rating Requirements Cont.
AThanks to the Professional Jockeys Association putting it back
on the agenda, a further proposal was already being considered
by the FPC before the issues surrounding this year=s Derby put
into clear focus the need for action to be taken,@ Quinn
continued. AIntroducing a minimum rating for these races has
three clear benefits. Firstly, it will help protect the welfare of the
human and equine participants in our major races by reducing
the risk that comes with inferior horses competing against far
superior opponents. Secondly, it will ensure that the risk of
unsatisfactory results in these races is reduced by taking out the
unknown factor and complications that can be caused
in-running by an inferior horse. Finally, it will help preserve the
reputation and public perception of our top races as
crown-jewel events, ensuring the focus can remain on these
races identifying and celebrating our sport=s champions.@
The issue of low rated horses taking part in elite races came to
prominence before this year=s G1 Epsom Derby when Diore Lia
(Ire) (Yeats {Ire}) became the subject of intense media scrutiny
due to her owner=s insistence that the filly run in the Derby
despite her seemingly hopeless chance of being in the frame.
After many column inches being devoted to whether the filly
should or shouldn=t be permitted to take her chance she was
withdrawn on the morning of the race due to a training injury.
CHURCHILL ON TARGET FOR YORK Aidan O=Brien has more or less given the green light for
Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to tackle the G1 Juddmonte
International at York next week Aug 23. The 3-year-old colt was
withdrawn from the G1 Qatar Sussex S. after heavy rain turned
the ground soft at Goodwood and next week will see the dual
Classic winner step up to 10 furlongs for the first time. In
addition to the increase in distance Churchill will also face a
deep field which should include Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration
{Ire}) who won the G1 St James=s Palace S. when Churchill was
only fourth.
"Churchill looks like he is going to go there. We are happy with
him and we are looking forward to it,@ O=Brien said.
"If he is going to go a mile and a quarter we need to try it now.
We always thought it would be well within his compass."
The Ballydoyle trainer is sure to be well represented
throughout the four day meeting and he could also run G1 Dubai
Duty Free Irish Derby winner Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}),
somewhat of a forgotten horse among the 3-year-old crop. The
colt is one of a number of O=Brien entries in the G2 Great
Voltigeur, a race often used as a stepping stone to the G1 St
Leger. "Capri is in it and Venice Beach is in it,@ he continued.
AThat type of horse they are all there. The horse that won at
Leopardstown the other night [Spanish Steps] is also in it. So we
have three or four possibles for that."
ROUGET STAR ALMANZOR BACK IN ACTION Tuesday=s action at Deauville takes on an extra dimension with
the return to the fray of last year=s champion Almanzor (Fr)
(Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron Hong Kong
Jockey Club. It was at this meeting last year that Antonio Caro
and Gerard Augustin-Normand=s bay began to be taken seriously
on an international level as he dealt with a clutch of smart colts
in the G2 Prix Guillaume d=Ornano en route to G1 English and
Irish Champion S. glory. He was already a winner of the G1 Prix
du Jockey Club at that stage, but as his win in that Classic had
come at 20-1 he needed to demonstrate that it was no fluke and
he did so in style before beating the very best at Leopardstown
and Ascot.
AIt=s a very big day,@ Augustin-Normand=s racing manager
Sylvain Vidal said. AWe=ll see what happens, but it=s exciting. He
worked very well last week. Jean-Claude is very happy with the
horse.@
Despite his lengthy absence, defeat will be a huge upset,
especially as he is getting three pounds from the June 17 G3 La
Coupe second and third Garlingari (Fr) (Linngari {Ire}) and First
Sitting (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

FAMILIAR TERRITORY Just as Almanzor did 12 months ago, Brametot (Ire) (Rajsaman
{Fr}) returns from a mid-summer break in Tuesday=s G2 Prix
Guillaume d=Ornano Haras du Logis Saint-Germain at Deauville.
At this stage, Al Shaqab Racing and Gerard Augustin-Normand=s
bay has one up on his illustrious stablemate as he is the winner
of the May 14 G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains as well as the G1
Prix du Jockey Club, where the re-opposing G2 Prix Greffulhe
winner Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper) was back in third.
AHe is a very good horse and Jean-Claude is very happy with
him,@ Augustin-Normand=s racing manager Sylvain Vidal said.
AWe=ll make plans after tomorrow, but I know Jean-Claude is
thinking of sending him straight for the Arc. We=ll have to see
how he runs and Al Shaqab own 55 per cent of the horse, so
they will also be a big part of making the decision.@
Andre Fabre saddles four, including Godolphin=s Apr. 16 G3
Prix Noailles scorer Soleil Marin (Ire) (Kendargent {Fr}) who was
disappointing when 11th in the Jockey Club when last seen June
4 and the unexposed and improving Last Kingdom (Frankel
{GB}). Prince Faisal=s bay has yet to prove his stamina for this 10-
furlong trip, but the way the Frankels are going at present
suggests he is imparting plenty of staying power. Coming off a
career-best success in Maisons-Laffitte=s G3 Prix Daphnis over
nine furlongs Jun 28, he is a fascinating rival to Brametot
alongside the Apr. 20 G3 Craven S. scorer Eminent (Ire) (Frankel
{GB}) who has been there or thereabouts in the G1 2000
Guineas and G1 Epsom Derby and who has had a short rest since
his latest fifth in the G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown July 8.
AHe=s had a bit of a break since the Eclipse and we=re pleased
with him,@ trainer Martyn Meade said. AThe thinking behind
bringing him for this race is that it will just take a bit of pressure
off him a little bit. We were thinking of going for the Juddmonte
International, but that would be putting the pressure back on
him again and hopefully running in a group two with a small
field, he=ll have a slightly easier time. Hopefully we get some
good ground and it will act as a confidence booster for him.@
FRESH START FOR LADY FRANKEL Given time to strengthen by Andre Fabre since early summer,
>TDN Rising Star> Lady Frankel (GB) (Frankel {GB}) returns to
attempt to live up to her early promise in Tuesday=s G3 Prix de
Lieurey at Deauville. Having beaten the subsequent G3 Prix de
Psyche winner Vue Fantastique (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) with style
at Saint-Cloud Mar. 19, Gestut Ammerland=s homebred
performed with credit when third in the G3 Prix de la Grotte at
Chantilly Apr. 16 and sixth in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary over 10
furlongs here May 14 before disappointing when third as the
favourite for Maisons-Laffitte=s Listed Prix des Lilas that June 10.
Fabre also saddles the Wertheimers=s July 23 Listed Prix de
Bagatelle scorer Esquisse (GB) (Dansili {GB}), while another >TDN
Rising Star> Monroe Bay (Ire) (Makfi {GB}) drops back to a mile
after finishing runner-up in the nine-furlong G3 Prix Chloe at
Chantilly July 9.

halfway, the 1-4 lock was scrubbed along soon after and kept on
relentlessly under forceful rousting inside the final quarter mile
to score by an ultimately comfortable three lengths from Show

SOLOW TO TRY HAND AT NEW DISCIPLINE Au-DelB des Pistes, in partnership with France Galop, will hold
a second raceday in honour of retrained and retired horses at
Deauville on Saturday Aug. 26, as part of the Lucien-BarriPre
sponsored meeting. One of the highlights of the 2016 Retrained
Racehorse Day was the Champions' Parade and this year's
renewal of the event promises to be even more popular with
the return to the parade ring of the mighty five-time Group 1
winner Solow (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). The former Freddy Head
trained grey will be joined by Au-DelB des Pistes ambassador,
Cirrus Des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top {Ire}), whose exploits need no
introduction. Also taking part in the parade is former multiple
Grade 1 winning steeplechaser Remember Rose (Ire) (Insatiable
{Ire}), as well as three former Godolphin stars, the G1 Dubai
World Cup winning pair of African Story (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and
Prince Bishop (Ire) and 2005 G1 Ascot Gold Cup winner
Papineau (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}).

turn, the 2-5 chalk was short of room inside the final quarter
mile and asserted under urging once finding a gap at the eighth
pole to score by a length from Uther Pendragon (Ire) (Dragon

WINX FACES 10, SO FAR Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) makes her eagerly awaited return
to competitive action in the G2 Warwick S. at Randwick on
Saturday and she will face a field of 10 rivals, although Racing
Australia has extended the window for nominating for the
A$250,000 race until 11 a.m. Tuesday, in the hope of attracting

AUSTRALIAN-BRED WINNERS
Winx Faces 10, So Far Cont.
Currently there appears to be very little in the way of Winx
posting her 18th consecutive win, she has upwards of 20lbs in
hand and her prohibitive odds back that up. She will be joined in
the race by three stablemates and other trainers with
nominations are under no illusions to the task at hand; one
example being John Thompson, trainer of Zanbagh (Aus)
(Bernardini), who labeled the race the >Winx Stakes=. Regardless
of who takes on the Chris Waller trained star on Saturday,
Australian racing fans will no doubt be thrilled to see her back in
the fray in her buildup to land an historic third G1 Cox Plate.
>BART=, HARTNELL FACE OFF IN LAWRENCE Another race in Australia on Saturday that should produce its
share of excitement is the G2 P.B. Lawrence S. at Caulfield. The
1400m event features a clash between the two heavyweight
geldings Black Heart Bart (Aus) (Blackfriars {Aus}) and Hartnell
(GB) (Authorized {Ire}). Darren Weir=s Black Heart Bart has
certainly shown a liking for the course and distance having
logged five wins there to date including three Group 1 victories,
the last one coming in the G1 Futurity S. in February when he
edged out stable-mate Tosen Stardom (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})
by a nose. In contrast Hartnell is having both his first start at
Caulfield and his first start for Godolphin trainer James
Cummings and he hasn=t run since being relegated to second by
Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at
Randwick in April. The pair aren=t the only high profile names
among the 18 nominations for the Lawrence as Darren Weir also
has Tosen Stardom engaged while former Horse Of The Year
Lankan Rupee (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}) is also a
possibility. Other Group 1 winners that could also take their
chance are He=s Our Rokkii (NZ) (Roc De Cambes {NZ}) and
Abbey Marie (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}).
