Thoreau's Walden: A Journey in Photographs by Scot Miller

description

In 1999 photographer Scot Miller embarked on a journey to retrace Thoreau’s footsteps during his time spent at Walden in the 1840s. He spent many hours in every season trekking through Walden Woods with his camera, fighting off mosquitoes in the summer and feeling the ice of the pond crack beneath his feet in the winter. Miller’s personal photographic journey is reminiscent of that taken by Thoreau some one hundred and fifty years ago and carries a consistent message of personal appreciation of nature that in turn encourages stewardship and conservation. The result is the inspiration for this exhibition: "Walden: 150th Anniversary Illustrated Edition of the American Classic", a reprint of Thoreau’s classic, published in 2004 by Houghton Mifflin. The book has enjoyed popular success and critical acclaim.

“I visit Walden everyday, not only to monitor if the coloring pencils are sharpened, but also, to imagine what Thoreau heard, smelled, touched, and thought as he explored this beautiful piece of heaven on earth.”

“The younger visitors gather

with their adults to

explore the discovery table. The discussion begins with,

‘What is that?’ Followed by,

‘I’ve seen that before’ or ‘Can we go look for

that?’ The snakeskin

repeatedly gets a ‘That’s cool’.”

“As I observe older visitors in the exhibit, they pause at each picture to share their feelings with their partner, old or young. They discuss the colors, or give a sigh of awe when they realize they’re looking at an acorn cap and not an intricately hand carved or woven basket.”

most?”

opportunity to share a thought

and drawing of their personal

Walden for us to post

in the exhibit.”
