WHOAREWE? Thor Technologies is a 100% Australian company that has developed protection specifically for the digital technology evolution since its inception in 2001. The company designs, engineers and manufactures a ‘Premium’ range of power and filtration products.

Whatisaspike?A spike is a rapid increase in voltage that lasts less than a millisecond. Spikes – degrade components and shorten the components life

Lessthan1millisecond

Whatisasurge?A surge is a rapid increase in voltage that lasts longer than a millisecond. Surges last longer and tend to cook or burn out equipment

External Interferences External power surges can be caused by: v  Faulty wiring, problems with the utility company's equipment v  Trees touching powerlines or branches breaking off during a

windy day v  Lightning Strike (Most Severe but least common form)

These are unavoidable occurrences

Internal Interferences These high powered pieces of equipment require a lot of energy to switch on and create a lot of energy when switching off, such as elevators, air-conditioners, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and hair dryers These high powered pieces of equipment require a lot of energy to switch on and turn off components like compressors and motors. This switching creates sudden, brief demands for high power.

Joules

u Joules determines the amount of energy a board can absorb, the higher the joule rating, the greater the protection.

u Think of Joules like a charged battery – they get used on a daily basis and eventually run out. When this happens there is no more protection left against the invading spikes and surges.

ResponseTime

u Response time is crucial to protecting equipment.

u Regardless of how good the joules and clamping voltage are, if the reaction speed is not quick enough the units are useless.

u Most surge protectors on the market wait for the spikes to hit them, then try clamp it down and absorb it. If it takes 8 nanoseconds to fry a motherboard and the surge protector reacts in 25 nanoseconds, then it will be too late to protect equipment.

ClampingVoltage

u Clamping voltage is where the board stops the voltage exceeding a particular point.

u Earlier we mentioned that when the voltage goes over 275V it starts to interfere with equipment

u Thor clamps at 275V thus protecting anything that is connected

u  Industry standard clamping is 710V (Damage starts to occur well before this.)

VoltageinAustralia&NewZealand... Is supposed to be 230V/240V but it can range from a high of 264V to low of 207V.

Some sensitive electronics will not handle these variances and will either have a greatly reduced life or become damaged.

Many power supplies in equipment are designed to operate in other countries that have, for instance, 220V supply. Therefore this type of equipment can handle low voltage incidents better than high voltage.
