Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, New York. 2/1999-9/2013RPCI is America's first cancer center founded in 1898 by Dr. Roswell Park. Director of IT Infrastructure/Project Mgr. 2007-2013Provided the Architectural vision, leadership, and direction for realizing the business goals as related to Information Systems Infrastructure and support. This role encompassed Telecommunications, Networking, Operations, Security, Data Centers, and Service Desk, and Customer Service. Led a diverse team of 31 employees and managed an annual budget of $2.5M million. Disaster Recovery and Business continuity process, and security.

Major Accomplishment Highlights Developed and hands on implemented redundant infrastructure architecture to

provide a highly available system to support an advanced Electronic Medical Record systems portfolio.

Implement security and participated in security policy and planning. Managed all infrastructure projects independently over 24 years on time and

on/under budget. Selected as a Finalist in for Computerworld's 2008 "Best Practices in Infrastructure

Management" Awards Program, finished second place. Created a close knit high impact team of nine to directly manage the infrastructure

components and capable of handling over 850 servers, Petabyte of storage, 4000 workstations, and a Service Desk in a 24x7x365 environment.

Championed the “Walk in My Shoes” customer service initiative. Back office technical people spending time in a customer setting observing how their actions impacts the people in the field. Following the experience they come back and report the experience and identify the systems involved connecting the dots. This fostered an understanding of business process and how they influence it. Resulted in better relations between teams in and out of IT with a common cause.

Performed a weekly ‘Walk About’ by the Service Desk supervisor and myself to a random targeted location to speak to the people using our systems. We did this on Friday afternoons when customers were at the end of the week and would report anything they experienced during the week needing our attention. This resulted in complementary process to the Walk In MY Shoes, but in this case we solicited incidents and problems not process experiences. Resulting in resolutions and a show of support for the customers by IT management improving the image of IT.

Spearheaded the introduction of Unified Communications culminating with Microsoft Lync being deployed campus wide for collaboration and meetings. Resulting in better collaboration both on and off campus.

Structured RPCI on a 4 year desk top refresh cycle with lease equipment to replace an aging desktop infrastructure to maintain productivity and save money. Resulting the flexibility to change as client device needs change, monetary savings, and maintained high productivity with fresh equipment on desktops.

Introduced a Private Cloud infrastructure and server consolidation project saving money on power and physical data center space. External assessment verified a resulting two Million Dollar savings over three years consolidating initial 200 physical machines into virtual.

Re-engineered the tier one storage model from purchase to a lease model using just the maintenance funds from old equipment to acquire modern next generation storage for line of business applications. Resulting at the end of 4 years there is a savings of 80 thousand dollars and the equipment performance keeps pace with need.

Initiated operations on the path to ITIL best practices revamping Incident Management and Change Management processes. Effective Change Management is a requirement of Title 21 CFR Part 11 of the Code of Federal Regulations and relates directly to research making its way to clinical uses.

Trained and mentored 7 special candidates into careers in networking, servers, enterprise applications and storage. Resulting in a High Impact Team that worked together dedication.

Support Services Administrator/Project Mgr. 1999-2007Provided leadership and expertise in establishing infrastructure for Y2K where existed an obsolete and inadequate infrastructure to implement the installation of new Clinical Care and Financial systems to be ready and operational at 00:01 January 1st 2000. Following that continued modernization of infrastructure from planning through implementation resulting in being be able to support an advanced Electronic Medical Record systems portfolio starting in 2006 that continues to the present. Established the site on the internet with a firewall at a time when people asked “why utilize a firewall?”

Implemented the predecessor to fiber channel SAN technology using Digital Custer Interconnect and storage controllers for superior IO ability and multiple system access replacing direct attached storage and islands of dedicated equipment.

First in area to move from 9 track tape to the “new” DLT libraries automating backups and eliminating the need for an operator to spent hours mounting 60-70 tapes one every 5 minutes.

A very efficient and stable infrastructure operated and serviced by 4 people over 24 hours x 365.
