WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN 2017

We are excited to be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program again this year! The program runs from 26 July until 19 September 2017. For every $10 spent at Woolworths the school earns one sticker. Stickers can be dropped into the collection box located at the school office or alternatively you can drop them into the Thomas Mitchell PS collection box at Safeway Endeavour Hills. Blank sticker sheets are available at the office if you would like to collect your own stickers. Completed sheets can then be dropped into the collection box at the office.

Completed sticker books are collected by the School and are used to purchase resources that support School programs. We are thankful in advance for any support you can provide in collecting and submitting these stickers.

Nude Food @ TMPS

Nude food winners for Week 2:

Junior School: 1AW with 37 nude lunches for the week Middle School: 3AS with 42 nude lunches for the week Upper School: 5JC with 33 nude lunches for the week

To see some simple recipes use this QR reader or visit the TMPS Nude Food blog at

http://tmpsnudefood.blogspot.com.au/. If you have a “nude” recipe to share please hand it

to Mrs A and it could be featured in a newsletter and on the TMPS Nude Food blog.

What is a “Nude” lunch box?

A “nude” lunch box is one that has no plastic wrappers or rubbish that goes to landfill. Use re-

useable containers to build a healthy and rubbish free lunch box. Remember, fruit scraps are

not included as rubbish!

Every day we count how many students in each class bring “nude” lunch boxes (including snack and lunch). The

winning class for the junior, middle and senior school will receive a certificate and the overall winner for the term

will receive a special treat.

For more information, contact Rose Arbuthnot.

During Term 2, we surveyed all the students on

how they get to and from school each day. Our

results showed that most of the students go to

and from school by car. It also showed us that

more students are walking to school since last

year and less are going by car. This is great to see.

Walking or riding to school:

*gives us quality time with our family and/or

friends

*helps us to save money on petrol and cars

* keeps us fit

* puts less pollution into the environment

Remember to always keep safe and obey the road

rules and where a helmet when riding.

Children’s Book Week August 19th – 26th

The Children’s Book Council of Australia runs Children’s Book Week, which is the longest running children’s festival in

Australia. A panel of judges looks at books submitted by publishers written or illustrated by Australian authors and

illustrators. They read all the books and then select those that are to be short-listed. The judges look mainly for

literary quality and then decide on the winners. Book Week celebrates and highlights the importance of reading. It is

a fantastic opportunity to encourage children to read. Thomas Mitchell will be involved in a range of activities during

Book Week.

The theme for this year is “Escape to Everywhere”. Children are able to look at and read the books during their

library lesson, during lunchtime or before and after school. All children will vote for their favourite book and the

winning book will be announced during the Book Week assembly on 25th August. Parents are very welcome to come

in and look at the book display.

COMPETITIONS Book Week Dress Up Day

On Friday 25th August, TMPS will hold their Book Week Dress Up Day. Students are invited to dress as their favourite

character from a book or as their favourite author. Prizes will be given to both the most creative and the best

dressed students in each year level.

Poster Competition

Students in all year levels are also invited to create a poster to share their interpretation of this year’s theme,

‘Escape to Everywhere’. The judges are looking for the most creative entries. Entries must be submitted by

Friday 18th August, to Room 7 (2DF). The winners will be announced at assembly.

If any parents have child-friendly magazines or catalogues they wish to donate for craft activities relating to book

week, could you please give them to your child’s classroom teacher, thank you!

The Book Week Committee

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all."

— Jacqueline Kennedy

The school runs a Playgroup for 0-5 year olds each Thursday morning from 9:15am – 10:30am during the school term in the Early Learning Centre. We ask for a gold coin donation to participate and for parents to please bring a nut free snack for their child/ren. It is a great opportunity to meet other parents of children attending our school or local families and for your younger children to meet other children who may be joining the school in the future. Please feel free to bring a friend along, or if you know someone with younger children who would like to join this group, please let them know. Fun activities include: playdough, painting, pasting, stories, music, singing and games. We look forward to seeing you.

Health Centre News

Always alert the school if your child requires medication at school as specific medication

authorisation forms are required. Promoting health and reducing health risks are important to

everyone at our school, particularly vulnerable classmates with chronic medical conditions.

We appreciate your support and cooperation. Please contact me if you have any questions.

School Nurse Felicity

If your child is unwell before school, please do not send them to school, as rest at home is often the

best remedy. Be aware that some conditions do have mandatory exclusion periods and medical advice

from your family doctor is best practice in supporting your child’s health care needs.
