DEAR FRIENDSOF MUSIC,
We have developed concepts that will allow us to perform all of our planned concerts for this season – with all of our musicians and with the highest possible safety for all involved – of course, provided that there are no further restrictions placed upon us.
We want to sing, we want to play! Indeed, we must! For you! And for ourselves.More than ever, we all know how important music is – how it makes us happy, comforts us, and lifts us up. To us, music is more important than most material things. Without spiritual and emotional nourishment, there can be no shared life and no common future. We are entering our new season with confidence, despite the difficulties that lie before us. Magnificent works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and many others await you.
And we are awaiting you, our audiences, in certitude and safety, but also with joy and with the inimitable passion and experience of togetherness which has made the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble so unique for so many years. I look forward to seeing you.
Sincerely,
Thomas Hengelbrock
It is a particularly great pleasure to be able to present our season flyer to you this year! That we are able to do so at all is truly not matter of course; as freelance artists and unsubsidized ensembles, we are among those who have been the hardest hit economically by the global crisis of the last few months. We received no financial support – either from governmental bodies (since choirs apparently were not deemed worthy of assistance) or from most of the institutions where we would have performed during the clo-sures due to the pandemic.
However, help was at hand, and help came from the heart:• from our wonderful sponsors and patrons, who guided us
through these difficult months with great sympathy and love,• from our fantastic staff, who rose up to meet even the greatest
challenges with courage, imagination, and passionate com-mitment, and who made the seemingly impossible become possible,
• from our musicians themselves, who want to sing and play above all else, and who submitted uncomplainingly to all of the difficult conditions imposed upon them, in order to be able to perform together again.
We are beginning our new season with confidence because, as Thomas Hengelbrock has already described, our health and hygiene protocols allow us to make music together. Moreover, we have already been able to perform live on stage! We were the only orchestra invited to perform at this year’s Aix-en-Pro-vence Festival, and played a concert at the Théâtre de l'Archevêché in early July despite the entire festival having been cancelled. The perfor-mance, featuring works by Mozart and Beethoven, which was also pro-duced and live streamed by the ARTE television network, was our very first concert after the coronavirus lockdown, and an indescribably mo-ving experience. By performing numerous rounds of tests, which were negative for all participants, and by implementing a strict quarantine for all involved, we were able to play together without social distancing. The cheers for the last movement of Beethoven’s 5th symphony came from the bottom of our hearts. What a moment of liberation!
After this stirring concert, we are now more excited than ever for our new season, and for next summer at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. We will be in Aix for several weeks and will present not only opera productions, but also symphonic concerts, education projects, and chamber music.
DEAR FRIENDS,DEAR MUSIC LOVERS,
Perhaps our greatest pleasure in the past few weeks, however, was that our choir was also able to sing again! Freelance singers have been some of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Choirs are still almost completely prevented from performing. However, we were determined to defy the virus, and in August we recorded an a cappella CD with our entire choir. Here again, multiple rounds of testing, quarantine for parti-cipants, and strict health and hygiene protocols in our hotel allowed us to sing without social distancing, and provided optimal recording con-ditions combined with high health and safety standards.
Now nothing stands in our way: with our Balthasar-Neumann-Health-and-Hygiene-Protocols in place, we can carry out our program for the coming season for choir and orchestra, as originally planned, with all of our musicians.Courageous presenters and organizers are standing with us, and hel-ping us develop innovative solutions so that we can make music again as we used to, and so that we can create unique moments onstage.
We hope you will join us too. We are looking forward to welcoming you. Best wishes,
Christina Schonk
The Office for International Cultural Projects (BIK) implements innovative cultural projects with exclusive artists and institutions throughout the world. It is active as an artists’ agency, programming innovator, production and ar-tistic operations center, tour manager, educational institution, and research institute.
The BIK has been headquartered in Freiburg im Breisgau (in southern Ger-many) since its founding by Thomas Hengelbrock 1994. The Hamburg Branch Office is mainly in charge of operational logistics.
The BIK acts as manager for the Balthasar Neumann Ensembles, Thomas Hengelbrock, and Johanna Wokalek and plans and implements their pro-jects. As a platform for cooperation and networking, the BIK brings its artists together with other creatives, and produces multi-disciplinary projects, liter-ary and musical events, concerts, and tours.
A further sphere of activity of the BIK is the Balthasar Neumann Academy, also founded by Thomas Hengelbrock. The Academy works extensively with various international programs in the field of music education.
In addition, the BIK undertakes musicological research of diverse kinds, from developing programs, to historical investigation, to the publication of schol-arly editions in the Balthasar Neumann Edition (EBN) series.

The namesake of the ensembles is Johann Balthasar Neumann (1687–1753). The bellfounder, engineer, and architect understood art as a space where
all people could freely develop and express themselves. This freedom was also a hallmark of his thought process, and can be seen in the buildings he
created, which were far ahead of his time, and which left his contemporaries speechles. An essential component of his buildings is the interplay of ar-
chitecture, painting, sculpture, and garden design.
The Balthasar Neumann Choir is among the most distinguished choral ensembles in the world. Founded in 1991, it was named as one of the “Best Choirs in the World” by Gramophone Magazine. Whether per-forming works of the 17th century, or new music, passion and a deep understanding of the repertoire are always in the foreground of the ensemble’s work. The artistic excellence, the versatility, and the intensity of the Balthasar Neumann Choir set international standards, and have led to invitations to perform at the most renowned concerts halls and most important fes-tivals. The choir makes regular guest appearances at the Schleswig-Hol-stein Music Festival and at the Munich Opera Festival. The ensemble has toured in China, Mexico and the U.S.A., makes regular appearances in Spain, and has enjoyed great success on international opera stages from Baden-Baden to Madrid and New York. The choir has worked with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, the NHK Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo), and the Basel Symphony Orchestra, among others. Renowned guest conductors have included Pablo Heras-Casado, Ivor Bolton, and Howard Arman.
Founded by Thomas Hengelbrock in 1995, the Balthasar Neumann En-semble is one of the world’s leading period orchestras, and is commit-ted to opening up new perspectives of music from diverse eras – from the early Baroque to contemporary compositions. The ensemble performs regularly in Europe’s most renowned concert halls (including the Dortmund Konzerthaus, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, and the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona) and regularly participates in opera productions in Baden-Baden, Paris, Aix-en-Provence, and Madrid. The Balthasar Neumann Ensemble holds numerous artistic residencies throughout Europe, currently including in Hamburg, Freiburg, Bologna, at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Château Fontainebleau, and at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence.
Numerous CD-recordings have been hailed as definitive, including Mendelssohn’s “Elijah,” and the work of the ensemble has garnered nu-merous prestigious prizes including multiple ECHO-Klassik Awards and the Gramophone Award.

Thomas Hengelbrock is widely considered to be one of the most versatile and compelling artists of his generation. His work transcends eras and categories, and is always the result of an intensive examination of the music, as well as of the meaning and essence of the work. As an enthusiastic and inspiring discoverer of forgotten compositions, Thomas Hengelbrock has dedicated himself to repertoire from early to contemporary music, spanning all genres. He has brought forgotten works to light and has made possible new appraisals of what constitutes standard repertoire. His legendary concert performances transcending stylistic eras reveal intriguing musical connections and themes. Early in his career, Thomas Hengelbrock worked as an assistant to such prominent figures in the world of contemporary music as Witold Lutosławski, Mauricio Kagel, and Antal Doráti. To this day, the music of the present plays an important role in his work.
Like the namesake of his ensembles, the great baroque architect Baltha-sar Neumann, Thomas Hengelbrock strives to unite diverse art forms: musical-literary-theatrical projects form another important focus of his artistic output. As an opera conductor, Thomas Hengelbrock is active at opera houses such as the Paris Opéra, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the State Opera of Berlin, and festivals such as the Baden-Baden Festspiele, Aix-en-Pro-vence Festival, and the Salzburg Festspiele. He is a frequent collaborator with orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amster-dam, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Munich Philharmonic, among others. Thomas Hengelbrock is an enthusiastic music educator. In 2016 he was awarded the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Music Prize for his commit-ment to the next generations of musicians.

JOHANNA WOKALEKTHEATERJohanna Wokalek was born in Freiburg im Breisgau and studied actingat the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna with Klaus Maria Brandauer, among other teachers. She made both her stage and film debuts while still a student. She was a permanent member of the ensemble of the Burgtheater in Vienna from 2000 until 2016, where she worked with direc-tors including Luc Bondy, Andrea Breth, Peter Zadek, Thomas Vinterberg, and Dieter Giesing. In 2016 she appeared in Alvis Hermanis’ “Platonov” and Luc Bondy’s “Tartuffe.” Among her acclaimed performances at the Burgtheater were the title roles in Kleist’s “Katherine of Heilbronn” and Lessing’s “Emilia Galotti.”
FILMFor her starring role in Hans Steinbichler’s film “Hierankl” (2003), Johanna Wokalek received the Bavarian Film Prize, German Film Fellowship Prize (category: acting), and the Adolf Grimme Prize (Gold Medal). Her break-through as a film actress was in Til Schweiger’s successful 2006 film,“Barfuss.” Further roles followed in Phillipp Stölzel’s mountaineering drama “North Face” (2008), Uli Edel’s “The Baader Meinhof Complex” (2008), and Sönke Wortmann’s historical drama “Pope Joan” (2009), in which she played the title role. In addition, she appeared in Lars Kraume’s “The Coming Days” (2010), as well as Sherry Hormann’s co-medy “The Pursuit of Unhappiness” (2012). In 2017, she appeared in the two-part German television production “Landgericht – Geschichte einer Familie” directed by Matthias Glasner, which won the Grimme Prize in 2018, and in Jan Speckenbach’s film “Freedom,” which competed at the Locarno Festival.
MUSICAL THEATER Following her opera debut in the premiere of Marc-André Dalbavie’s “Charlotte Salomon” in 2014, Johanna Wokalek performed the role of the Sorceress in Thomas Hengelbrock’s 2015 Salzburg Festspiele pro-duction of Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas,” which was expanded to include a prologue and epilogue which she also wrote. In the summer of 2017 she performed the title role of Joan of Arc in Arthur Honegger’s oratorium, staged by Àlex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus) at the Frankfurt Ope-ra. In 2019, she performed in the premiere of Pina Bausch’s critically ac-claimed adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” entitled “He takes her by the hand and leads her into the castle, the others follow…” at the Wuppertal Opera House. She continued her collaboration with the en-semble of the Wuppertal Theater with a dance production of Kurt Weill’s “The Seven Deadly Sins” in the spring of 2020.
CREATIVE WORKSFor several years, Johann Wokalek has been active in the creation of per-formances in which the interaction between music, theater, literature, and the visual arts provide new forms of artistic expression. She recorded the CD “Nightwatch” with the Balthasar Neumann Choir in 2011, opened the Hamburg Theater Festival in 2015 with her musical and staged reading of “Laissez-moi” by Marcelle Sauvageot, and since 2016, has presented a fascinating view of the Parisian “Belle Époque” with her musical and lite-rary staging of “Nana.” Together with the Cuban ensemble “Caribe Nos-trum” she developed the musical and literary program “Cuba – a Quest.”

CUBA – A QUEST A MUSICAL-LITERARY CREATION
BY AND WITH JOHANNA WOKALEK
In June of 2020, despite the complete shutdown of cultural activities, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg breathed to life again – and broadcast to the entire world. A Hamburg festival instigated by the Gute Leude Fabrik Agency and its director Lars Meier produced a colorful show of solidarity in aid of nursing and medical workers with the motto: “One comes, all join in.” Numerous renowned artists stepped onto the stage (alone) in order to play five to ten minutes of music or perform other works. Johanna Wokalek recited two ballads. Even though no spectators sat in the auditorium, there was an enthusi-astic audience. The livestream was available all over the world, and the performances generated donations for 2500 medical workers in trai-ning. The trainees were given “cultural vouchers” with which they can attend theater productions, concerts, film showings, or purchase books for a year.

The goal of our work with the Balthasar Neumann Academy is a direct ap-proach to arts education: Thomas Hengelbrock and his ensembles transmit their passion for music to the next generation. In addition to this, the Acade-my is committed to the preservation of cultural heritage and its establishment in the consciousness of the general public. The Balthasar Neumann Academy stands for assistance and encouragement, dialogue, and cultural exchange. The Balthasar Neumann Academy structures its work into three areas: 1. Scholarship program: the two-year-long scholarship program of the Bal-thasar Neumann Academy accompanies exceptional music students on their path into professional life. In addition to financial support and instrumental instruction, the recipients receive training in historically informed perfor-mance practice, chamber music and orchestral playing, as well as interdisci-plinary subjects such as marketing, music history, and sponsoring, and more. 2. Cuban-European Youth Academy (CuE): the Cuban-European Youth Aca-demy is an innovative exchange and advanced training initiative for young Cuban and European musicians which puts transatlantic cultural exchange into practice. Young musicians from both sides of the Atlantic come together and work with each other in workshops and orchestra projects. In addition to their training in their own countries, the participants learn about different music and work cultures. 3. Music education: numerous working phases of Balthasar Neumann En-sembles’ projects are accompanied by programs for school children. Child-ren of all ages, and who attend all types of schools can experience rehearsals up close, can work closely with the professional musicians who make up the ensembles and with Thomas Hengelbrock himself, and can experience the music of past eras in an intuitive and exciting way.
BALTHASAR NEUMANN ACADEMY The Academy designs individual workshops for the scholar-
ship program on topics such as moderating concerts, press relations, or dramaturgy. Additionally, the scholarship reci-pients are involved with various music education projects, including cooperative projects with the Hamburg Hospital for Child Psychiatry, KinderPaCT, or El Sistema Greece. Cur-rently, work is being done to prepare for our next group of recipients. After auditions in the fall we will choose four new, highly-motivated young musicians who will accompany us beginning in January 2021. We are looking forward to an exciting new season, and we wish the alumni who are leaving us at the end of this year all the best for the future!

MUSIC EDUCATION
Music Education is close to the Balthasar Neumann Ensembles’ hearts. Inspiring the audiences of tomorrow about the world of classical music is always rewarding for all participants: to be able to prepare a musical work with a group, understand it, and to see one’s self as an important element of that work during a per-formance is often the spark that leads to a lifetime of fascination with music.

PROJECT PARTNERS OF THE CUBAN-EUROPEAN YOUTH ACADEMYThe Cuban-European Youth Academy receives no support from any in-stitution. All projects are financed by project partners and private foun-dations. The German Foreign Office has been an important partner of the CuE since 2014. In the difficult times of the coronavirus pandemic we are doing everything we can to help our Cuban partners and friends with musical projects. For this reason, we are especially thankful for the wonderful support of the colla-parte-Foundation, the Foundation of the Rheingau Music Festival, and the Goethe Institute. If you love music and are interested in helping young musicians with their training, we invite you to contact us.
Our loyal patrons, sponsors, and many other supporters have made substantial contributions to the fund which we started at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to these funds we were and are able to pay cancellation fees to our freelance instrumentalists and singers for cancelled concerts, and to organize new projects. In this way we are trying to help our musicians as much as we can through an exceptionally financially difficult time. Your financial contribution is a very great help, an appreciation of our work, and an act of solidarity with art and artists. We thank you, on behalf of our musicians, from the bottom of our hearts.
