Chicago based Saxophonist Dave Rempis has launched Aerophonic Records and is pleased to announce its two debut releases, Phalanx, by The Rempis Percussion Quartet, and Boss of the Plains, by Wheelhouse, set for a joint release on June 11th, 2013. Founded in the winter of 2013 by noted Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis (The Engines, Ballister, Rempis Percussion Quartet, Vandermark Five), Aerophonic will be the main avenue by which Rempis intends to release his recordings in the future. Although a number of well-run labels for jazz and improvised music still exist, Rempis intends to further capitalize on the overall trend of artist control and responsibility that has characterized jazz in the 21st century, whether it be in organizing tours, concert series, producing recordings, managing websites and social media presence, etc. When asked about his intentions for the label, and overall direction as an artist, Rempis says, Over the last decade, its become clear that in the world of jazz, artists now have the means to control every angle of their own presentation, whether it be through live performance or recordings. Simultaneously, the infrastructure that once existed in jazz through a network of booking agents, venues, and record labels is simply disappearing. This trend is unlikely to change. But I view Aerophonic as an opportunity to further take the reins on my own career, rather than as a dissolution of things past. This is simply the way forward for an improvising musician in 2013. For more information about the label visit www.aerophonicrecords.com.

  • BLUE NOTE RECORDS PARTNERS WITH ARTISTSHAREThe legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, historic home to such greats as Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey and Herbie Hancock, and current home to artists such as Wayne Shorter, Terence Blanchard, Joe Lovano, Jason Moran, Jos James and Norah Jones, has joined forces with the pioneer of crowdfunding, ArtistShare, to create a groundbreaking new partnership: Blue Note/ArtistShare.

In recent years Blue Note has launched the careers of young jazz stars such as Robert Glasper, Lionel Loueke, and Ambrose Akinmusire, and continues to release cutting-edge music from new talent such as bassist Derrick Hodge, whose debut album as a leader will come out this summer. The new joint label Blue Note/ArtistShare provides an additional channel for Blue Note to help nurture and promote up-and-coming young jazz artists, while creating a platform that offers a unique opportunity for fans to become directly involved with the creation of new music by tomorrows jazz stars. The Blue Note /ArtistShare collaboration was forged by Camelio, Lundvall, and Don Was, President of Blue Note Records. Under the arrangement, Blue Note will be involved in the selection of artists, and will lend its iconic logo and promotional support to the finished album, along with the potential to upstream the artist to the official Blue Note Records roster for future releases.

The world-renowned Australian Fingerstyle phenomenon Tommy Emmanuel and Britains jazz icon Martin Taylor release their highly anticipated duets CD, titled The Colonel & The Governor, on Mesa/Bluemoon Recordings.

This CD re-creates jazz classics from masters such as Django Reinhardt, Karl Krass, and Eddie Lang, and features Standards like Jersey Bounce, The Nearness of You, and Lullaby of Birdland. Both Emmanuel and Taylor also contributed original compositions to the project. Taylor and Emmanuel had an instant chemistry. Martin and I go back to the early 90s when I first saw him on TV in Australia.

  • I was so amazed by his playing, I rang the TV station and they gave me his hotel details, recalls Tommy. I immediately rang him and invited him to play with me at a beautiful theatre in Sydney.

I have learned so much from Martin, as he comes from a jazz background and I come from a country and rock background. We both have a strong love of melody and arrangements that allow our playing to interweave effortlessly. Sometimes it feels like time stands still when we are playing together. Martin once introduced me on stage as the abominable showman I have always called him The Governor.

  • BOB JAMES & DAVID SANBORNQUARTETTE HUMAINE

    Available Everywhere May 21, 2013

    new release sneakpeek

OKeh releases keyboardist-composer-arranger Bob James and alto saxophonist David Sanborns new album, Quartette Humaine, on May 21, 2013. The project is the first collaboration between the two musicians since their 1986 Platinum-selling, GRAMMY Award-winning album, Double Vision. An all-acoustic quartet offering, Quartette Humaine pays tribute to the late iconic pianist-composer Dave Brubeck, putting a prime spotlight on his work that featured alto saxophonist Paul Desmond.

On their second go-round, the old masters eschew the pop and R&B production values that mark large chunks of their respective discographies, and offer instead an all-acoustic quartet recital consisting of four new compositions by James, three pieces by Sanborn, and two James-arranged covers (My Old Flame, Geste Humain). Propelled by legendary drummer Steve Gadd and 21st century bass giant James Genus, the proceedings are reflective, swinging, chock-a-block with unfailingly melodic improvising and beautiful tonalities. We felt its far more exciting and adventurous to move forward, James says. Times have changed. The music business has changed. We have changed. Its a poignant coincidence that the recording sessions occurred in December 2012, a week after the death of Dave Brubeck, who the protagonists were thinking of as they gestated Quartette Humaine. We talked about the interplay of Brubecks quartet with Paul Desmond, Sanborn says. Coming from that, I assumed wed make a quartet date. I like being able to really hear all the individual instruments. We had this beautiful 9-foot grand piano, and you can hear its sound ring out. You get more sonic purity without all those other elements.

Indeed, both the tunes and treatments channel Brubecks gift for creating communicative music from highbrow raw materials. Dave has a similar capability to Paul Desmondthough in a different wayin that the lyric quality of the way they play takes it into an emotional-romantic concept rather than an intellectual one, James says of Sanborn. I feltand I still do when I listen to the Brubeck quartetthat they were taking us on an adventure, and some of the adventure was challenging. Just when you thought you knew where you were going, theyd go somewhere different. Its this adventurous, in-the-moment spirit that fuels Sanborn and James on Quartette Humaine. Its so much fun to do it this way, Sanborn reflects. I used to separate live playing from being in the studio, and got into a mindset of having to labor over a record and make it right. I want the studio to reflect that live experiencethe fun of discovery, not knowing whats going to happen until it happens.

    Jazz Jam Sessions

ChicagoA jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public.

Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

  • We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

    Annual Chicago Jazz Festival

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Andersons band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival 34 years after he first played this event encompasses the festivals entire history.

Morse Avenue, Chicago, IL 60626 (773) 381.4554 www.maynestage.com AMINA FIGAROVA TRIOAminas pieces strike a perfect tone, employing genuinely beautiful harmonizations, to capture fleeting thoughts that accompany those precious moments when the puzzling jostle of daily existence comes into unexpected but deeply satisfying sync.

  • Composer and pianist Amina Figarovas 12th album, titled Twelve - her debut release on the renowned independent German label In + Out - celebrates jazz is an international music and New York City as a locale where jazz gypsies may feel most at home. A suite of songs for sextet Figarova wrote swiftly in 2011 after moving with her husband and musical partner, flutist Bart Platteau, to Forest Hills, Queens from their longtime European base, Twelve is suffused with the heightened expectations, sense of adventure and fresh perceptions that voluntary emigrs enjoy, as well as the confidence, creative energies and nuanced fulfillment that artists gain from being in the right place at the right time.

Amina was born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan, Bart is from Belgium, and together they are citizens of the world. Theyve toured extensively, developing a tight-knit ensemble that, despite inevitable personnel changes, has attained a distinctive and inimitable voice by concentrating on all-original repertoire for almost 18 years. During that period, Figarova and Platteau have lived in Rotterdam, which they found to be a comfortable if not overly challenging launching pad for their careers. Having collaborated with musicians residing in both the U.S. and Europe and having built up a circuit of welcoming venues by taking it one gig at a time, the Amina Figarova Sextet has triumphed at the main stage of the Newport Jazz Festival, been invited repeatedly to New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, won critical and audience acclaim in Chicago, Detroit, Paris, Amsterdam and of course New York. In 2010 they decided to make the daring, big move to the States, and having arrived, they couldnt be happier.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

  • Everything Im singing now is a reflection of my truest self, says Jane Monheit. After all this time in the industry, after touring for 13 years, its time to just be me, with complete and utter freedom.

Monheits sense of liberation is apparent throughout The Heart Of The Matter, the acclaimed, Grammy-nominated vocalists ninth studio album. It can be felt in her wide- ranging choice of material, in the unique arrangements, and in her own fearless performances and interpretations. The diverse and very personal set of songs includes both familiar standards and compositions by Lennon/McCartney, Randy Newman, two songs by Ivan Lins, recorded in the original Portuguese, and, for the first time, a Monheit original.

  • The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Bensons career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. Its a very simple equation, the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. In the end, its about the songs and the stories. Thats what keeps the music fresh for me. Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade. Even so, James says, I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.

    Hw C M FLINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
