  • KENNY DORHAM PLAQUE UNVEILED IN FAIRFIELD TEXASMcKinley Howard (Kenny) Dorham (August 30, 1924 December 5, 1972) was an American jazz trumpeter, singer, and composer born in Fairfield, Texas. Dorhams talent is frequently lauded by critics and other musicians, but he never received the kind of attention from the jazz establishment that many of his peers did or public recognition. For this reason, his name has become (in the words of writer Gary Giddins) virtually synonymous with underrated. He also composed the jazz standard Blue Bossa, which first appeared on Joe Hendersons album Page One. Dorham was one of the most active bebop trumpeters. He played in the big bands of Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, and Mercer Ellington and the quintet of Charlie Parker. He was a charter member of the original cooperative Jazz Messengers. He also recorded as a sideman with Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins, and he replaced Clifford Brown in the Max Roach Quintet after Browns death in 1956.

For more than 25 years since his passing, Kenny Dorham remains a highly inspirational figure to young jazz musicians. Now the town of Fairfield, Texas has honored Kenny Dorham with a plaque pictured above and a festival named after him. The main event of the Kenny Dorham Jazz Festival took place April 27, 2013.

  • DETROIt JAZZ FESTival announces 2013 Line-up In his second year as the Detroit Jazz Festival Artistic Director, Chris Collins has cultivated another amazing lineup for this years Labor Day weekend performances. The vision for 2013 was to bring together artists who represent real jazz in all its forms. World-renowned musicians will come together to give Festival attendees performances theyve never experienced before. This years artistic vision focuses on the language of jazz and the generations of musicians who have dedicated their lives to propagating its many dialects. We will celebrate history and revel in the creative spirit of artists who expand boundaries to create truly unique, engaging and meaningful music. 2013 Detroit Jazz Festival Artist-In-Residence Grammy award winner Danilo Prez (pictured) is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. In just over a decade, his distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz (covering the music of the Americas, folkloric and world music) has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences. Hailing from Panama, Danilos abundant talents and joyous enthusiasm make his concerts both memorable and inspiring. Whether leading his own ensembles or touring with renowned jazz masters (Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy), Danilo is making a decidedly fresh imprint on contemporary music, guided, as always, by his love for jazz. • Marc Anthony has been on the Curaao North Sea Jazz wish-list for quite some time. Last year, he participated in the Sergio George All Star Friends band that was composed especially for that occasion, this year he will have his own swinging performance. He is the biggest-selling salsa artist in the world. Singer/producer/actor Marc Anthony started at a young age as background-singer, but his talents as a performer and composer stood out quickly. In 1991, his first album When The Night Is Over appeared. At the end of the 1990s he made the crossover to the worldwide mainstream-public, when his English-language albums Marc Anthony and Mended, and singles such as I Need To Know and You Sang To Me, became great successes.

Rosanna, Africa, Pamela, Stop Lovin You are all classics. In the 35 years Toto has existed, IT has sold over 35 million albums and been awarded with multiple Grammys. The musical world-map cannot be imagined without this band. Not only Totos own productions are enormously successful, but also its cooperation with giants such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Pink, Paul McCartney, Santana and Lionel Richie. A show not to be missed. Few artists can beat this: singer Paul Anka (1941) is already celebrating his sixth (!) decade as an artist.

    NEW RELEASE of the week

    NATIVE LANGUAGE MUSIC

Theo Bishop is no newcomer to the music scene. The veteran keyboardist and composer was born in Portland Oregon, the third of five boys that each pursued musical careers. His forays into classical, rock, jazz, country, new age and film music form a musical bridge between the styles of his two older brothers rock & country backgrounds and his younger siblings classical talents. Theo grew up in Portland Oregon and Boise Idaho playing in rock bands and studying classical piano at Boise State University. This multitalented keyboard artist has won multiple competitions and after testing his hand at a variety of musical crafts and styles, eventually gravitated toward a career as a Jazz performer and songwriter.

The past two decades have seen a metamorphosis in Jazz for Theo Bishop. He has written & produced some of Smooth Jazzs top songs and performed with some of its brightest stars. Most notably, he has recorded and or played live with Jeff Kashiwa, Steve Oliver, Dave Hooper of the Rippingtons, Tony Guerrero, Rob Mullins, Juan Carlos Quintero, Brian Hughes, Jimmie Haslip and Will Kennedy from the Yellow Jackets to name a few. With performances at the Maui Jazz Festival, Stockton Jazz Festival, Fresnos Coombs Ranch and Fig Garden Jazz Festivals, Newport JazzFestival, and many others, Theo is a crowd favorite. Theo performs regularly at many local So. Cal. Jazz Venues including The Winery, Spaghettinis, The Renaissance, Casanovas, and more when he is not touring or recording. Theos Newport Nights and One Mans Dream CDs have aired throughout the world and his music continues to receive playtime on various media around the world. In 2003 Theo co-wrote the #1 smooth jazz hit Hyde Park (The Ah Oooh Song) and has produced and written music for artists such as Solomon Burke, and the Russian rock band, Autograph.

  • In recent years Theo has been scoring films including: The Board Game a film by Jon Larson, The Waters Edge also by Larson and most recently Todds Locks an independent short film by Filmic Story works Inc. • new release sneakpeekGlobal noizesly reimagined

When Sly and The Family Stone hit the scene back in the late 60s, the world socially, culturally and politically was in a state of upheaval. And their music perfectly evangelized the moment. Today, we stand dangerously at the edge of a similar precipice and that message of celebratory potential and jubilant clarity is sorely needed. With that concept squarely implanted in his minds eye, visionary conceptualist, producer, arranger, composer and keyboard wizard Jason Miles has created the extraordinary Sly Reimagined on the Zoho Roots label.

Sly Reimagined is the ideal description as the music on this CD doesnt simply pay homage, but also defines the timelessness of the music by translating it to the forefront of musical thinking here in 2013.

Global Noize with its triumvirate of Jason Miles, turntable master DJ Logic and vocalist Falu (left to right pictured) is accompanied on this recording by an astonishing array of nearly two dozen musical powerhouses, including Nona Hendryx, Roberta Flack, Jay Rodriguez, Amanda Ruzza and the original Family Stone drummer Greg Errico.

The presence of Jason Miles is at the core of every element of this truly remarkable album. Not only does the concept flow stem from the heart and soul of his remarkable musical vision; but also the keyboards, synthesizer and programming that comprise his instruments of aural expression permeate every moment of this music, holding it together and binding all of the parts into a most singular sensibility.

    Jazz Jam Sessions

ChicagoA jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public.

Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

    2013

  • We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Andersons band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival 34 years after he first played this event encompasses the festivals entire history.

  • Born in Baltimore, Bill Frisell played clarinet throughout his childhood in Denver, Colorado. His interest in guitar began with his exposure to pop music on the radio. Soon, the Chicago Blues became a passion through the work of Otis Rush, B.B. King, Paul Butterfield and Buddy Guy. In high school, he played in bands covering pop and soul classics, James Brown and other dance material. Later, Bill studied music at the University of Northern Colorado before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied with John Damian, Herb Pomeroy and Michael Gibbs. In 1978, Frisell moved for a year to Belgium where he concentrated on writing music. In this period, he toured with Michael Gibbs and first recorded with German bassist Eberhard Weber. Bill moved to the New York City area in 1979 and stayed until 1989. He now lives in Seattle.

Over the years, Bill Frisell has contributed to the work of such collaborators as Paul Motian, John Zorn, Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Suzanne Vega, Loudon Wainwright III, Van Dyke Parks, Vic Chesnutt, Rickie, Lee Jones, Ron Sexsmith, Vinicius Cantuaria, Marc Johnson (in Bass Desires), Ronald Shannon Jackson and Melvin Gibbs (in Power Tools), Marianne Faithful, John Scofield, Jan Garbarek, Lyle Mays, Vernon Reid, Julius Hemphill, Paul Bley, Wayne Horvitz, Hal Willner, Robin Holcomb, Rinde Eckert, The Frankfurt Ballet, film director Gus Van Sant, David Sanborn, David Sylvian, Petra Haden and numerous others, including Bono, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell and Daniel Lanois on the soundtrack for Wim Wenders film Million Dollar Hotel.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

  • Everything Im singing now is a reflection of my truest self, says Jane Monheit. After all this time in the industry, after touring for 13 years, its time to just be me, with complete and utter freedom.

Monheits sense of liberation is apparent throughout The Heart Of The Matter, the acclaimed, Grammy-nominated vocalists ninth studio album. It can be felt in her wide- ranging choice of material, in the unique arrangements, and in her own fearless performances and interpretations. The diverse and very personal set of songs includes both familiar standards and compositions by Lennon/McCartney, Randy Newman, two songs by Ivan Lins, recorded in the original Portuguese, and, for the first time, a Monheit original.

Acoustic Alchemyhas pushed the limits of the acoustic guitars potential by embracing a spectrum of musical styles ranging from straight-ahead jazz to folk to rock to world music and beyond. In the two and a half decades since their earliest recordings despite a tragic setback in the late 1990s and the inherent challenges of the 21st century music industry the group has assembled and sustained a vast and loyal following that stretches well beyond their U.K. origins.

Through it all, the overriding mission of Acoustic Alchemy has been to reach the broadest possible audience by pushing the potential of instrumental music to embrace a broad spectrum of styles without being limited to any specific genre.

  • The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Bensons career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. Its a very simple equation, the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. In the end, its about the songs and the stories. Thats what keeps the music fresh for me. Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade. Even so, James says, I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.

    Hw C M FLINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
