MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Page 2: THIS WEEK’S EVENTS · After the ascension Jesus is present in the Church and continues his ministry in and through the Church. So after Jesus’ ... June 30, 2020, Solemn Vespers

May 24th, 2020 Ascension of the Lord, 7th Sunday of Easter

Today in our celebration of the Lord’s Day we celebrate THE ASCENSION OF

THE LORD. It is never easy to say, “Goodbye.” The time also came for Jesus risen from the

dead to return to heaven from earth. As we heard in the Gospel. Jesus took his seat at the right hand of the Father. Jesus completed his mission on earth and returned to his Father again. But this was not in fact the end of Jesus’ mission because before he ascended he entrusted his mission to the Church. At the end of Mark’s Gospel which we have just heard, Jesus commanded the Apostles: “Go into the whole world and

proclaim the gospel to all creation.” After the ascension Jesus is present in the Church and continues his ministry in and through the Church. So after Jesus’

ascension if you we are looking for Jesus the place to look for him is in his Church. During his life on earth Jesus was present in one way, and after his ascension Jesus is present with us in another way, in the Church, and he guides his Church to continue his work by giving different gifts to different members of the Church.

What is the gift Jesus gave to you to use for the Church? He surely has given you a gift to be used for the benefit of all of us here. As soon as everyone receives the Sacrament of Confirmation they should take on some role helping in the Church, using their gift for the service of the Church. We should try to let the whole world see that the Church, that our parish, is the place where Jesus continues to be present after his ascension.

When we truly live the message of Jesus we help the faith of others. When we do not truly live the message of Jesus, we scandalize others and the whole Church suffers. Let us pray that the Church will more and more become what Jesus calls it to be that all may come to find Jesus.

The Ascension of Jesus reminds us that during our lives we are “only passing through” on this earth, as we say. We are pilgrims on a journey. Just as Jesus’ earthly life was temporary, and he ascended to sit at the right hand of the Father, so also our lives here are temporary, will come to an end, and we will meet God in the next life. The Ascension of Jesus reminds us in all of our busyness not to forget what life is all about, and preparing to meet God in heaven.

God wants the best for us and through Christ offers us the best and therefore put all enemies under the feet of Christ when Jesus rose from the dead so that we can be free to enjoy the life God offers us.

During this week before Pentecost I ask you to please pray like Mary, the women, the apostles and disciples for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church and on all of us that we may respond to God better. Please believe that your prayer will be answered. Pray that our celebration of Pentecost will lead to the Church being renewed and strengthened by God’s Spirit.

Today we are going to consecrate our families to HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH (Sunday, Live Streaming Mass at 11:00am) It is the perfect time to turn to the HOLY FAMILY and ask for help and protection during this pandemic time. Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles – and partly as a result of conquering them --- families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. Through this consecration, each participant is consciously choosing to be a beacon of God’s love through His Church.

CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY FAMILY

PRAYER: O LORD JESUS, you lived in the home of Mary and Joseph in Nazareth. There you grew in age, wisdom and grace as you prepared to fulfill your mission as our Redeemer. We entrust our family to you. O BLESSED MARY, you are the Mother of our Savior. At Nazareth you cared for Jesus and nurtured him in the peace and joy of your home. We entrust our family to you. O SAINT JOSEPH, you provided a secure and loving home for Jesus and Mary, and gave us a model of fatherhood while showing us the dignity of work. We entrust our family to you. HOLY FAMILY, we consecrate ourselves and our family to you. May we be completely united in a love that is lasting, faithful and open to the gift of new life. Help us to grow in virtue, to forgive one another from our hearts, and to live in peace all our days. Keep us strong in faith, persevering in prayer, diligent in our work, and generous toward those in need. May our home, O Holy Family, truly become a domestic church where we reflect your example in our daily life. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

NEWS AND UPDATES --- Announcement of Ordination and Installation of the Eighth Bishop of Paterson The Most Reverend Kevin J. Sweeney, D.D.: On April 15, 2020, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, made a provision for the pastoral care of the Diocese of Paterson, through his appointment of Rev. Kevin J. Sweeney, Priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn as Bishop of Paterson. At seven o'clock in the evening, on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, Solemn Vespers will be celebrated in preparation for the ordination of the Bishop-Elect the following day. At two o'clock in the afternoon, on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, the Memorial of Saint Junipero Serra, Priest, His Eminence Joseph W. Cardinal Tobin, C.Ss.R., Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark will ordain The Most Reverend Kevin J. Sweeney, to the Order of Bishops and Install Bishop Sweeney as the Eighth Bishop of Paterson with The Most Reverend Nicholas A. DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, and Bishop Serratelli serving as Co-Consecrating Bishops. Both celebrations will be take place in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Paterson and will be in accord with social distancing norms and will strictly require limited admission by ticket only. Both events will be live streamed on the website of the Diocese of Paterson. When social distancing norms can be relaxed and a greater number of the faithful are able to gather, a Mass of Thanksgiving and Welcome will be celebrated by Bishop Sweeney in the late autumn, so that the local church of Paterson can pray together with the shepherd who will guide us in the name of the Lord. During these days of preparation for the Ordination and Installation of the Bishop-Elect, we join in prayer for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our new shepherd and upon all of the clergy, religious, and laity of the Diocese of Paterson. We ask for God's healing power to dispel all fear and illness from among us and to give us the grace of the Light of Christ which never fails. PRAYER FOR BISHOP-ELECT: Good and gracious God, we stand on the threshold of a new time for our diocese. As we cross that threshold in thankfulness, we ask you to pour out an abundance of grace on our Bishop-elect Kevin Sweeney that he may faithfully assume his ministry among us and that, together with him, we may work for the building up of our local church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season. This year our celebration of Memorial Day because of present pandemic will not be the same but we still pray for our soldiers who have served our country in all our wars, those that are living and those who have died.

CORPUS CHRISTI FOOD COLLECTION FOR THE POOR

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted those living in poverty the most and Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson's 3 Food Pantries (Father English Center, Paterson; Hope House, Dover; and Partnership for Social Services, Franklin) are giving out more food than ever before. Most months, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson gives out food to 5,000 - 7,000 people at their 3 food pantries. In April of 2020, this number practically doubled, as they helped over 11,000 individuals who are feeling the direct economic impact of COVID-19. Bishop Serratelli has authorized a Catholic Charities Diocesan-wide food collection in all parishes. This year, the drive has gone virtual, and you can shop online and have items directly shipped to Catholic Charities Food Pantries. Visit www.ccpaterson.org/corpus for more information and visit www.yougivegoods.com/ccpaterson-fooddrive2020 to find our parish, and shop for our pantries in need. You may also email: [email protected] or call (973) 737-2077 ext.403 with any questions or to donate food directly to Catholic Charities Food Pantries.

It is only through your contributions that we are able to survive and deliver services and carry out the important spiritual work within the church and beyond especially now during this pandemic time. “For it is in giving that we receive.” ―St. Francis of Assisi. No one has ever become poor by giving. We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give. These are strange times, but we trust that God is with us. We walk together in hope that we will find new ways to stay connected, to comfort one another, and to reach out together for Christ's healing of our world and our people. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ABUNDANTLY FOR YOUR LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO OUR PARISH.

.PRAY DAILY. .PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR PROTECTION

AND HELP. O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
